This Isn't the Bicycle I Knew

Sun, Jun 8, 2008 at 2:26:13 pm PDT

Barack Obama goes for a bike ride in Chicago.

With a flat tire.

I HOPE he doesn’t ruin the rim. He really ought to CHANGE that tire.

Just a matter of time before he throws the bike under a bus.

2 mikeinmd  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 2:27:26pm

Maybe him and Michelle can fist pump it up.

Just a matter of time before he throws the bike under a bus.

I guess that means he still can't be on it when that happens?

Clueless in Chicago

Maybe he can put one of his speeches in the tube to fix it.

And it's a "hybrid" bike - weak. Why am I not surprised?

Gotta admit, though, that his balance is pretty good posing for that picture.

Is the back tire separated from the rim?

22 rc  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 2:32:37pm

You know, I'm conflicted now...I was originally thinking he might be a bad person...but there is a growing body of evidence he may just be the biggest air-headed doofus to run for President in the history of our republic...

26 Charles  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 2:32:58pm

That's a hitch for a kids' trailer. He should have taken it off, but probably didn't know how.

27 My 2 Cents  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 2:33:13pm

Woah a minute. In the zoomed view, it doesn't necessarily look like a flat tire to me. Are you sure it is flat? I think information may be being lost in the graininess.

Is that bar connected beneath his seat attached to a bicycle-for-two thing, or maybe a vehicle, the way they do in the movies? Wouldn't want him to fall... Like when they film a car chase, and the actors are really being towed by the camera truck...

Nah, the media wouldn't stage something like that.

Ok, I just looked at the other photos as best I could. To me, it looks like the rear tire is a bit lower on air, but hardly flat. By "flat" do you mean completely flat, or just lower on air than it should be? If completely flat, then the picture is a hypocritical (although still not very important) photo-op. But if it is merely low on air, then this is hardly worthy of featuring. Just saying how it looks from here...

102 EC Marm  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 2:42:59pm

Anyone that rides a bike for anything other than a 'photo op' knows that step one is check tire pressure. I usually take short hops of seven miles or so. If I have about 30 psi in my tires, I make it. Anything less, too much rolling resistance and I wear myself out. That rear tire has maybe 3 pounds of pressure in it. Or Oh'Bama weighs 300 pounds.

His younger daughter is just short of 7, so she may not be confident about riding on her own yet. I don't imagine she's had much opportunity to practice w/ her parents this past year.

I used to go bike riding in jeans and combat boots. But I rode a brake-less 20 inch BMX through overgrown swamps and down steep tree lined mountains at a high rate of speed.

===

Those trailers are designed for little kids. Two grown adult men could compress that back tire to the point where it looks flat, if it was at it's normal inflation pressure.

The way they cropped those pictures, all of them, says they're hiding something they don't want us to see.

Ok. I used to ride bicycles a lot in my youth. I realize you ride them a lot right now. And I also realize that you are better at reading photos than me. re: #83 My 2 Cents

Well it should all be placed in perspective the tire obviously is NOT FLAT. It is in fact mostly round, except of course, the part where the tire meets the road, which is straight. 175 vbspurs  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 2:55:44pm

Speaking seriously for a minute, and not because Georgetown Press aka Maureen Dowd shamed to:

Images convey specific intent. What was the intent of showing a Presidential candidate, alone, on a Sunday riding around a low-income housing neighbourhood on a bicycle, in 2008?

- That he's athletic
- That he's health-conscious
- That he's concerned about the environment
- That he's sensitive to people from underprivileged backgrounds

Those are his primary messages. But the secondary intent are the following:

- That he's one of the people, and doesn't ride around in posh neighbourhoods (he's not an elitist)

- That his staff want to photos to focus on the man, not the family (iconography angle)

- That he's more concerned with speaking to his base, than speaking to Americans at large (who drive big fat mudsplattered F-150s and that's fine)

So you know, point taken, Mr. Obama. Thanks.

I used to ride bicycles in Thailand on the flight line when training/certifying and observing load crews. A low tire or bad (read cheap) bearings could give you a whole lot of extra exercise.

Off base on the dirt roads you could justify a lot of Singha/Amarit stops. 67-75.

220 tedzilla99  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 3:11:23pm

The reasons that you can say 100% that this is a staged photo-op are:

1. Flat tire - from lack of use
2. Kid trailer hitch - still there, from lack of use
3. Brand new White Sox hat

This bike probably hasn't been used in at least 3 years, the tires are probably dry rotted - which explains why the back is flat and not the front. Someone said "Hey Obaminable, why not show people that you can relate to Whitey by going on bike ride - do ya have a bike?" And he dusted off this one.

I'm sorry, but these comments are just pathetic and spiteful. There is no good reason to criticise Obama for riding a bike. Maybe it is a publicity stunt, maybe he just wanted to go for a bike ride. If it is the latter, lay off the guy, it is just a bike ride, so what if he looks stupid. If it is the former, then don't 'dignify' the stunt by responding to it: it is just a banal bike ride.

He's fair game especially since this seems staged. This sends all kinds of messages: he's just regular folk, cares about the environment, cares about conservation, and even though it's not newsworthy, it's a way to keep him constantly in the media.

It's also classic progressive propaganda for the Leader to appear physically fit and active.

So no- this isn't a "banal" bike ride.

If he regular rode that bike, he'd know it is much harder to ride on a flat or almost flat tire. He'd know that he's risking damage to the tire and rim. Even if he doesn't care about the money, he still has to deal with the problem. If he regularly rides a bike, he'd have a way to fix tires and get air into them.

re: #162 Charles

Sorry, I completely disagree. That is a flat tire.

It is definitely low enough on air that it will be flat soon when he pinches the sidewalls.....the bike is definitely a loaner, the frame is way too small for him and the seat is not properly adjusted for his leg length (may not be a long enough seat post). The way he is sitting that saddle, I'll guarantee, his ding ding would be asleep in a few blocks. The person that the bike belongs to is both shorter and lighter than BO.

The silly talk here does NOT help Barry and Michelle find fresh fruit for their children. And I fear that exposing his greatness in public like that is dangerous. You never know when a typical whitey might take the opportunity to run him over and call it a mere accident.

Actual journalists do recognize the newsworthy aspects of Obama, such as Chrissie (I squat to pee) Matthews thrill up his leg when listening to our next Potus and others in media recognize the quantity of man meat hidden in his tight jeans. I suspect many here, including the host, are envious of the new messiah's substantial endowment.

I like the Lurch (sKerry) one looking like a big blue condom coming out of that NASA training chamber, only it should have been in pink.

You know there is no big deal about him riding a bike with tire low on air. Afterall the other day Obama claimed that since he locked up the nomination, the oceans have begun receding and the planet finally starting to heal itself. I feel this man-god will unite us as a people. WE are all citizens of the world and truly our brothers' keepers.

I won't be voting for Obama because of his position on the war, because of his connections to shady characters like Reverend Wright, for his liberal economic policies, for his stance on illegal immigration. The decision will not be made because he got caught riding a bike with low pressure in the back tire. It doesn't necessarily make him a phony. I've been out riding and noticed low pressure in my back tire. Once I locked my keys in my car. I put salt instead of sugar in my coffee once. If we hold our leaders up to ridiculous standards then we will only get a certain type of leader. James Stockdale comes to mind.

That's a long lens. 200-300mm I'd guess. And it looks to me that he is riding in the concrete gutter, rather than the sidewalk.

You can tell a lot about a man by the type of bike he rides...

Mine's an Ellsworth Moment with a Maverick DUC 32 fork. 6 plush inches of gnarly terrrian-eating travel. Less than 32 pounds. All-American steel.

Obama seems to be riding one of those unisex metro bikes, no doubt made in China.

'nuff said.

353 Meremortal  Sun, Jun 8, 2008 5:42:13pm

Things that cannot be denied:

It's illegal to ride a bike on a sidewalk. THAT was dumb staging.

That back tire would wear anyone out in much less than a mile.

Any sharp turn at more than walking speed would bring the back rim in contact with the pavement, with bad results.

The front tire looks a bit low.

The seat is nowhere close to the proper height for Obama's legs.

Showing the connecting arm of the bike trailer without showing the trailer is very poor photography.

None of this is important.

None of this has any bearing on Obama as presidential material.

Making fun of Obama is fun.

I'm glad he is good for something.

Made where? Not overseas and robbing an American citizen of employment opportunities? One of my bikes is a 22 year old American-made Cannondale. Wonder if the price of gas(I paid $4.04 .9/10 today in Delray Beach, Fl.) will increase bike riding? I see more Vespas and talk is that Tri-Rail commuter trains are enjoying much increased ridership. Seems silly though that people will dump SUVs for new Prius. You can buy loads of gas for what they are losing in trades.

One of the observations that came to mind is that Bush has his seat adjusted right for proper leg to pedal length. Obama has his bike adjusted like a typical non-rider ... no way can he get proper push on the pedals! One more thing Obama really needs to learn how to do - ride a bike.

re: #9 uncle_monkey

It's just you. He's only barely moving, because he's in a low gear. He's not going uphill or anything, so there'd be no reason to be in such a gear. But any motion at all will keep a bike upright.

As fit as he is, that kind of pace would be about as much of an aerobic challenge as sitting by the pool. This isn't a ride for the joy of riding. (That's effectively impossible now that he's such a public figure. There's no way that security can cover a 15 mile loop. And it's summer. Nobody wears jeans for a summer ride. And the seat hasn't been adjusted for his height. His left leg can't quite extend enough.) It's just a photo opp.

Sram, a Chicago bicycle parts brand is going to do a fundraiser for Obama (check out bicycleretailer.com) and boy am I glad most of the after market parts we sell are Shimano! A lot of bikes come spec'd with Sram parts, but I'll be making my buying decisions a bit more carefully now. They did a survey on bicycleretailer, and most riders would want to take a ride with BHO (WTF?) Personally, I'd ride with Bush (low on survey) who knows how to ride and supports Trek Bicycles.

401 Gmac  Mon, Jun 9, 2008 10:28:25am

Obviously no one there had a tire pump or they would have used it. Its a lot harder riding on under inflated/flat tires than on properly inflated tires.

Then again it signifies a lot of what his campaign represents ... underwhelming expectations of voter support for a Marxist. He's running on an empty tire.

402 srmoss  Mon, Jun 9, 2008 10:07:53pm

Aero bars might help, then again maybe just a little slime in the tires: "Oh Michelle ..."
