OT:
Seems that Obama's keeping Johnson on his VP search committee using that most Clintonian of excuses - Johnson isn't exactly "working" for Obama since he's volunteering his time and effort.

Is there anyone in the media who will call him on this BS? McCain has said that this is preposterous, which is one way to describe it. Flabbergasting is another. BS is still a third (and perhaps more accurate).

As far as I'm concerned he and that idiot Bill Maher are cut from the same cloth. I can't stand either one of them. It just goes to show that you can be a no talent jerk and still get your own show. In Shakespeare's time actors and entertainers were considered little better than prostitutes. Old Billy was right!

55 kynna  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 9:40:42am

I used to think Jon Stewart was the best interviewer on television. He has taken self-importance to a Goracle levels now (thanks to some slobbering MSM pieces on him) and he actually thinks he's a thinker.

It's sad. I like the Hollywood stars who admit they don't know much about much but those folks are getting pretty few and far between.

Comedy, stand-up mostly, gets a pass when it comes to non-PC, religious or ethnic jokes. If this was funny it'd be less offensive. The problem is, it wasn't funny, therefore quite offensive.

I don't see anything terribly wrong with this. The bit was pretty light hearted and didn't have a malicious tone to it. Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, et al used slurs too. It's comedy. Borat uses a lot of Jewish material and I think he's ok too. This isn't the funniest John Stewart bit ever but I don't think there's anything that terrible here.

135 strandedsf  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 10:03:21am

Jon Stewart did indeed try to make it as an actor before taking the Daily Show gig. He didn't want to do another talk show after his failed MTV attempt. I remember watching a movie in which he starred opposite Gillian Armstrong of X-Files. Angelina Jolie was also in it. As I watched it, I kept wondering if they dug a trench for her to stand in, like they used to do for ingenues starring opposite Alan Ladd in the 1950s. It was really distracting. He and Maher really are that short. You just can't stop thinking about it when you see them.

However, in Stewart's defense, he has the reputation of being quite considerate to his staff. The opposite is true of Maher. He is known in LA as a bitter, hateful, misogynistic, vulgar bastard. He goes through assistants like Obama goes through preachers.

136 Junior  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 10:03:44am

Maher's and Stewart's audience, for the most part, are the lowest denominator of our society. It's the same segment of society that will never pay back their students loans. It's the same segment of society that bought a house they should never have purchased and now expect a hand out from the government to help them out. It's the same segment of society that are the biggest followers of the crowd. They don't think for themselves and they take their direction in life from popular culture and media.

It's a pathetic segment of our society; and that is their audience. My favorite moment ever on Maher's show is when Christopher Hitchens told Maher and his audience how dumb they were - and he was serious. Oh it hit them deep... it hit them deep... cause it is so damn true.

These people are just dumb, mindless robotic idiots.

But of course...crickets chirping.

re: #140 snowcrash

I agree. If you've been to a comedy club (ANY comedy club) in New York you will hear plenty of funny jokes based on ethnic stereotypes. But when a comedian starts switching to ethnic or sex jokes in the middle of their act it is usually a sign that they are dying up there. These jokes are easy to squeeze for a few laughs. Every black comedian has a least a couple of black people jokes but only a small few are nearly as funny as Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle. Same thing applies for Jews...and no one in comedy goes to Jon Stewart for his Jewish jokes.

I don't watch Jon Stewart anymore because he is pompous and totally smarmy, believing his own very small smidgen of talent makes him truly informed, enlightened, and Gandhi-like.

Went to school with guys like Stewart, who in my opinion, think Judaism is an impediment to being the really cool, totally hip dude. To guys like that, the sum and substance of Jewish identity is eating a Pastrami sandwich and people speaking in funny Yiddish accents.

No appreciation for the culture, history, or religion, so how is his show or "cool " persona inconsistent with that?

Basically, I thought the overall tone of it was anti-Obama, and that's a good thing.

It's a comedy show, after all. They're not known for their tact. At least American Jews aren't tossing firebombs at his house, a fine point which is largely lost on Americans who have sympathy for those who rioted over the Mo cartoons.

That's why our country is different. Hate speech is free speech. I'd rather put up with ten Jon Stewarts on the air than have one Mark Steyn prosecuted in the courts.

169 Bill Dalasio  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 10:58:34am

Both Jon Stewart and Bill Maher have based their careers doing a second rate immitation of Dennis Miller. Essentially, Miller created the modern version of the hip, sophisticated smart-alec laughing at the ridiculousness of the news on all sides. Miller pulled it off. Brilliantly. Neither Stewart nor Maher come anywhere near close for a couple of reasons:

1. Miller actually is that hip and sophisticated. Any time watching him you know there's a better than average chance that he'll slip in a reference that only someone who spends a lot of time both reading and studying and experiencing life could know offhand. For all their snideness, neither Stewart nor Maher come off much better informed than the average college freshman in a dormroom bull session.
2. Miller's act was generally much kinder than either Stewart or Maher. Miller was saying "I'm awsome!", while Stewart's and Maher's seem more interested in saying "I'm more awsome than you!" Moreover, in targeting people, Miller seemed interested in the traditional satirist's role of getting the target to see the ridiculousness of their behaviors or arguments. Both Stewart and Maher genuinely seem more interested in belittling their targets,

I think people should be proud of their ethnic origins, not contemptuous of them. I think the reggae singer Matisayahu should be an example for "Shecky" Stewart. When you see George Lopez joke about Mexicans or Mancia about Hispanics in general there is always an element of pride or respect included. "Too cool for school" Stewart might try that.

Comedy central links like this don't work outside the US. The LGF link hangs in Canada and the link in the movie itself changes address to the Canadian Comedy Central page losing the specific clip in the process.

178 MJBrutus  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 11:23:09am

OK, I don't get the comments dissing Stewart over this. I thought he was pretty funny. My relevant details are that I am an atheist and am Jewish (proud of both and not the least bit lacking in self-esteem). Lighten up folks, he's a comedian and telling jokes is what he does!

I will concede this much, however. It's OK to crack Jew jokes, so long as they're not too mean-spirited. I can only imagine the outrage we'd hear from the left if the butt of his jokes were blacks or (dare I say it) Muslims, however gentle (or gentile) the humor!

179 offendi  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 11:40:04am

re: #178 MJBrutus

Think the comments here are eminently understandable and really speak for themselves.

If Jon had any real balls as a " comedian " he would do his " humor" in black face. How do you say quick cancellation? Muslim jokes? Doubt Stewart is that brave. Fatwas and all.

The way he is going I expect him to start doing his show dressed as "Shylock". That's fine, because I don't watch ghetto Jewish "humor" anyway.

re: #178 MJBrutus

I think that one of the things we can take away from this is only in America would Jewish comedians be comfortable making jokes like these. You never see Jewish comedians making jokes like these in France, England, or Germany (where they would probably be prosecuted for hate crimes). Even Sacha Baron Cohen had to hide his Jewish jokes in the guise of someone clearly anti-Semitic (Borat) so that the English (non-Jewish) viewers would understand that the views being mentioned were considered bigoted.

I even remember the Daily Show writers making a joke one of the years they received an Emmy about how almost everyone on the writing staff of the show is Jewish.

Look the Daily show has been dropping off for years. They been writing hack-jokes almost non-stop since Colbert and Carrell left. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the of the backroom writers left around the same time. The C&C plus Stewart years will be remembered as the peak of the show.

I would recommend checking out Eugene Mirman. I've been following him for years (even shared a drink with him in a bar once, before his show).
He's pretty funny and getting funnier. Just type his name into youtube. He started out pretty mediocre but at this point he would leave Stewart in the dust. I would be surprised if he became an A-list comedian at one point.

He is also a Russian Jew who (to my knowledge) hasn't told a single Jew joke i.e. he's got a real routine (and talent) going.

I will not even watch this clip. I stopped watching the increasingly crappy Daily Show almost 4 years ago. John Stewart is a classic example of a 'Self-Hating' Jew. I mean every Channukah all he does is complain about how bad Channukah is compared to Xmas. After I saw that after 2 years of Stewart I found something better to use my time for.

I too long for the good old daily shows of Craig Kilborn era.

193 Ilan Toren  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 12:22:51pm

I think his comments were meant to be so beyond acceptable as to be funny. Sort of like Archie Bunker was over the top too. Frankly I'm a bit less embarrassed about a Jew mocking other Jews than I would be if he were talking about the Pope. Let's face it there is a whole genre of humor based on people acting as if the unacceptable is the norm. The Three Stooges using pliers to pull someone's nose would be one example. Stewart is being cartoonish and not a little immature. Guess many people find that amusing. I find some of it amusing, not all of it, but then I have some taste (not completely unsophisticated).

194 muman  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 12:23:44pm

Far too many people take seriously the stereotypes and canards displayed in the clip. Satire is one thing, but this is antisemitism. It's not funny, it's offensive. And it matters not one bit whether Stewart is a Jew himself.

197 blueroom127  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 12:34:11pm

Goebbells would have been proud of Jon Stewart's stereotyping.

I wonder of they'll do a cakewalk skit for Obama.

Both are equally offensive and disgusting.

198 TS  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 12:38:27pm

I thought it was a funny skit.

#194 Muman

Is a Jew who doesnt believe in Hashem really Jewish? I know that as long as they live they can always return, but I have learned that a true Jew believes without a doubt in the Creator of heaven and earth.

Screw your own hateful descision of what makes a jew.

I'm a pierced, tattooed, non religious, deeply proud Jew who supports and has supported Israel my whole life. I'm as mocked and disgusted by Jon Stewart, Daily Kos and the rest of those hateful scum just because I was born Jewish and you'll mock those that don't "think" as Jewish as you'd like?

We're all in this together wether you're able to accept it or not. Leave it up to the anti-semites to decide "true jews"

re: #196 snowtravel

Snowtravel,
You are absolutely correct.
I usually don't mind self-deprecating humor. All the Jewish comedians always did that. But this goes way beyond that. Stewart is recycling all the moonbat anti-Semitic stereotypes. And that is not funny.
Eric.

re: #194 muman

Muman,
Back in the old Soviet Union there was a special line in the internal passport that specified your ethnic origin. So, for a Russian it would say"Russian", for a Ukrainian it would say "Ukrainian" and for a Jew it would say "Jew". Some Jews who were partially non-Jewish would get this line changed to something else. But often they would still look Jewish. Yes, you can look Jewish. You would know exactly what I am talking about if you would have seen me. So, we always joked about people like that: "You get punched in the face, not in your passport".
My point is that a Jew is always a Jew, religious or not. Don't insult me by saying that somehow I am less of a Jew if I don't keep kosher.
There was a Catholic Church operating inside the Warsaw Ghetto for converts. One of the Catholic Saints, a nun, was murdered in Auschwitz because she was Jewish ethnically.
So, to reiterate, saying that I am somehow less of a Jew because I am not sufficiently religious is insulting.
Eric.

re: #199 blueroom127

Bravo, blueroom.

Along the same lines, I once had a discussion here with buzzsawmonkey in which he narrowly defined Jews via "ethnicity." If you read the thread (start at comment #193), you'll see what he really meant was religion, thus excluding Karaites, reforms and (presumably) secular Jews, all of whom have suffered on account of their heritage.

(Buzzsawmonkey actually mocked my reference to an official decision by the Rabbinical Committee on Jewish Law and Standards that contradicted his position on the acceptance of Karaite Jews, and reveled in his own ignorance: "I just love it when non-Jews try to explain Jewish ethnicity to Jews. They always make fools of themselves.")

If you ask me, nothing is more Jewish than holding your head high in the face of persecution or ridicule: none the less when the source is a another Jew (as seems to be the case with Jon Stewart in the OP). I'd like to think that kind of dignity is a deeply American trait too. So wear your special heritage—and your tattoos—proudly my friend.

203 muman  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 1:16:08pm

I have never said anything about your particular beliefs. It is obvious that Jews do go 'off the dereck' meaning they go off the path, but you are still a Jew. There is a difference between 'being born Jewish' and being 'a Jew'. You are a 'Jew' in the anti-semites eyes, and a Jew who has gone off the path in my eyes. I pray every day for you and your kind, there is always time for you to return to Hashem {he is a kind and caring father who is waiting for you to make a move}.

It is a shame that so many Jews have a need to prove to the rest of the world that they are just as 'messed-up' as the rest of the nations. We were a nation of priests and a light unto nations. I was like you, a rebel, for almost 20 years of my life. I do not regret the Dead shows and the drugs I did. But I now realize it was all just rebellion against the creator. And now I live a life of blessing.

The nation of Israel needs every Jewish soul to come back, to help bring about the next level. Do not shun your religion, be proud of it. You who feel this is hateful need to reflect on what makes you so rebellious.

Thanks Eric. See my #202: your last post (#201) deserves the same kudos.

206 muman  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 1:24:24pm

Yes, you can make up any definition of what a Jew is. A person who does things his own way, someone who has funny hair, someone who doesnt eat pork, etc.

What made us a Jewish nation was the receiving of the Torah at the foot of Mount Sinai {which we just celebrated last Sun/Mon}. Before this we were not a nation, once we accepted Torah we became a nation. Without Torah we are nothing.

Every Jew, who was born of a Jewish mother, has a place in the Children of Israel. Whether you are observant or not, it is irrelevant. But when a Jew is close to Hashem and brings others closer, it begins the change required to bring about peace on earth. I try every day to bring Jews back to their G-d and in doing so make this world a better place.

207 muman  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 1:26:34pm

Also, antisemites love hypocrites. People who claim to be of the chosen people yet break all the commands. I get respect from people, even wearing kippah and tzittzits every day. I have never heard an antisemitic word. Faith in Hashsem gives us strength.

I think people need to relax a little. He did skewer Obama the most for his pandering to Jews when it is clear he has the least bona fides.

While most of it was pretty mild, and the meter at the end was funny, along with the quip that McCain didn't need to bring his own jew with him, there was one really nasty comment. When he showed the candidates not criticizing Israel and then stating no one who criticizes Israel can get elected, he started wading into Walt and Mearshimer and away from Bubbie thinking its too drafty. But overall it was a mildly amusing piece which I think was completely fair game for this type of program.

The greater point many are making about whether certain late night personalities are funny, I agree that many have slipped over the years. Leno is no longer funny because he has become safe for the over 70 crowd. Letterman is just bitter and leftist. Stewart thinks he can hide his left wing agenda through laughing at his own jokes about George Bush being a marble mouthed chimp. Just like Martin Sheen beieves that he was president because of the left's adoration of him, so too does Stewart think he is Walter Kronkite and Johnny Carson.

Conan and Kimmell are still funny.

Stewart is a lucky beneficiary of geography. If his family had been living in Europe in the late '30s early '40s, well he wouldn't be peddling his "shlock" as one poster put it, he wouldn't exist because his family would have been massacred in the camps. Israeli children when learning about the horror of the Holocaust by and large say somewhat incredulously " but where was our army ?" In Israel the Jewish people can defend itself, rather than rely on the kindness of others.

So, why is this relevant to "Shecky" Stewart? Well, maybe he should temper his comments about Israel with a deep appreciation of the function it serves and the history surrounding it, rather than be the Jewish version of a minstrel show for a mass and un-familiar audience that helps them frame negative beliefs.

Re Comedy Central Daily Show: “Indecision 5768”

Dear Mr. Dauman:

I write to express my profound dismay and disgust at the above-referenced segment aired June 5, 2008 on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart. The segment can be viewed by searching “jon stewart indecision 5768” (without the quotation marks) or using the following URL: [Link: www.thedailyshow.com...]

In the segment, Stewart displays many of the stereotypes and canards that anti-Semites use to dishonor ridicule and persecute Jews. I realize of course that Stewart’s intent may have been satire. Yet far too many people believe this hateful nonsense—and consequently continue to persecute and attack Jews in Israel and elsewhere—to find anything but revulsion here.

I trust that, as a responsible corporate executive, you will forward a copy of this to Mr. Stewart and to the writers and producers of the segment, and that you will add your own authoritative voice to mine on the need for discretion where racial, ethnic or religious hate is concerned.

Thank you very much for your kind attention to this matter.

Very truly yours,

snowtravel

From Rush's site re:LGF
***
Over the weekend, the guy that runs the Little Green Footballs blog, Charles Johnson, found a bunch of things on Obama's website. One of them was the truth of the Jewish lobby and it was one of the most anti-Semitic posts that you've ever seen, and it was still up there, and finally the Obama website took it down. There was also praise from some Muslim militant that was on the website. There are a lot of things -- and I told you this during the primaries and the superdelegates know this -- they are worried silly here.
***
Simply giving credit where credit is due. In past transcripts he has given credit to Charles for being the first to spot the Reuters Photoshop cloning...

***
Little Green Footballs was the first to call attention to this. Charles Johnson, who runs that blog, has had his life threatened now by a Reuters -- we think it's a Reuters employee. Somebody has used a Reuters e-mail address to send him a death threat essentially saying, he can't wait, the writer said he can't wait to see Charles Johnson's throat slit. It all started with a bunch of fake photos about bombing attacks in Beirut.

Yeah, funny. Like Der Stuermer.

No, you’re right: I exaggerate. In fact, I take it all back: Stewart’s bit can’t compare; unfair even to try. I mean, Der Stuermer had the Blood Libel and the murder of the Christ—you know, the really hilarious stuff—comedy that, not long ago, had all of Europe in stitches!

Stewart’s not that funny yet.

Now, what was the “punch line” to those old jokes?

234 mhag  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 12:44:18am

Colbert is way funnier.

235 duckydan  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 9:24:55am

I thought it was really funny. That didn't seem hateful to me. I thought he was making fun of the pandering and even looking at some things through the eyes of perhaps a syndical jewish person. But I could be clueless too, a very big possibility.

236 Pantera  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 11:12:12am

Wait, I'm confused. When did the memo go around that all lizardoids had to hate humor that didn't support our politics? I may have missed that.
Honestly, he was pretty funny. He made fun of Obama for pandering with his US flag/Israeli flag lapelpin and made some pretty funny Jewish jokes. I don't see whats so hateful about this. His really funny stuff is when he makes fun of the media and it's various stupidities when covering the election.

237 shmuli  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 11:39:32am

Come on, lizards, it WAS funny.

You don't think so? Fine, that is OK, but this Jew laughed and I did
not know if Stewart was Jewish or not. Making fun of AIPAC, the
candidates puffing up for them and making the point that Obama
did badly is not such a terrible thing.

Lighten UP! It may not have side-splitting funny, but it was worth
a smile and I will share it with my other Jewish friends.

238 huggy77  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 4:12:59pm

i thought parts where funny, but i did not like the silence part only because he would never joke about muslims... Someone mentioned Rickles, he is brutal... but brutal to every race, creed, color, gender and sexual preference, which is more fare.... Rickles is sooo much funnier though, and still funny in his old age... I wet my pants when he starts talking to those in the audience...

239 snowtravel  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 5:07:23pm

I couldn't disagree more strongly, and the admonition to "lighten up" couldn't be more misplaced. No other minority group takes the pounding that Jews do (figuratively and literally); the public wouldn't and doesn't stand for it. It's simply impossible to imagine such "jokes" targeting Blacks or Mexicans or Catholics or Muslims.

History shows that when crazies persecute, injure and murder Jews en masse, this sort of "comedy" invariably precedes it. We're inuring ourselves to the worst kind of Jew-baiting, as the surprising support it's getting here only proves. If it continues, it's going to end badly.

Shame!

240 littleben  Wed, Jun 11, 2008 9:40:07pm

It was funny, up to a point.
Then it became ridiculous; and finally, hitting every stereotype, it really did amount to Jew hatred.) I don't like the term "self hating Jew", since the hate is not against the self, but the "other" who is the Jew with perceived Jewish identity.

Like they said in ancient Hellenist occupied Israel, he is the type of Jew who wants to paste it back on, and they did, literally.

241 ZaphodBeeblebrox  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 1:37:03am

Jon Leibowitz is a no talent hack. This guy's been coasting doing an old Chevy Chase "Weekend Update" bit for years. *yawn*

The worst part about "The Daily Show" is that many people actually watch it to hear the news. At this rate Mike Judge's film "Idiocracy" will be classified as a documentary that was ahead of its time.
