Obama Campaign Belatedly Looking for a Security Expert - After the Problems Are Exposed

Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:58:22 am PDT

As we’ve pointed out recently, the official Barack Obama campaign web site is full of utterly amateurish security problems, such as open directory listings.

LGF reader EC Marm points out that the campaign is now advertising for a “security expert:” Barack Obama | Change We Can Believe In | Secure a Website and an Obama Victory.

Obama for America is looking for a network security expert who wants to play a key role in a historic political campaign and help elect Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

Analyzing the network architecture for the My.BarackObama website

Leading an overhaul of existing security systems and architecture, including policy, firewall, VPN, and networking equipment

Developing a strategy for responding to hack attempts, DDoS attacks, and other potential threats

Establishing and managing the security posture of the online campaign My.BarackObama

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but shouldn’t they have enlisted a security expert before putting this site online? This isn’t somebody’s meaningless blog, it’s the web site of a presidential candidate, and they’re so lax about security that they’re only now getting around to doing something about it—after the problems came to light.

People who donate money to Barack Obama through his web site ought to be very concerned about giving this group of amateurs their personal information; the campaign apparently puts almost no value on internet security.

Pffft, as if the problem was lack of security.

Maybe the open directories, but not the open hate groups. That's an ideology problem.

The dam is just one facet of the Iranian government's larger pact with Nicaragua 's former Marxist revolutionary president. Under the pact, Iran is to fund or help fund the construction of a farm equipment assembly plant, 4,000 tractors, four hydroelectric plants, five milk-processing plants, a health clinic, 10,000 houses, two piers in the western port of Corinto and a deep-water port on the Caribbean in collaboration with Venezuela .

In exchange Nicaragua is to export coffee and other agricultural products to Iran .

Who was a robot, fer pete's sake. How badly did they have to screw up his design spec to get an asthmatic robot?

I think he was actually a cyborg, like Hillary.

With a shout-out to Occasional Reader, how do you screw up a design spec to get cankles on a robot?

Tehran ships a nuke to NY City and detonates it in the harbor.

Obama will then take a look at National Security.

Hey John McCain. At the foreign policy debate, point to Obama and say this and Chief Justice John Roberts will be swearing you in on January 20th.

Or was Barry's bicycle helmet on too tight when they set up the web site?

They are looking for a network administrator and web designer in 1. Those are 2 different fields at all. These guys are nuts.

I hear they're also advertising for a fry cook / brain surgeon / double naught spy.

People who donate money to Barack Obama through his web site ought to be very concerned about giving this group of amateurs their personal information; the campaign apparently puts almost no value on internet security.

Most of the credit cards used for contributions are stolen anyway. Who needs protection?

133 J.S.  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 12:20:40pm

Sometimes, of course, you might not even be aware that "ya gotta problem" with computer security -- say, for example, a hacker just accesses a database and copies it...so you might not even be aware you've been hacked (no trail)...until, of course, some time later when the info is "used."

LMAO good thing he's not going to be in charge of anything major, like, let's say, our country or the economy....oh wait -- he's running for POTUS. Good gravy, Luther!

How did anyone this stupid graduate from Harvard? How did anyone this innept get elected to Senate?

The funny thing will be to watch all his NUTROOTS swooners who, once they realize he "plays the game" and tosses THEM under the bus along with granny, will begin to realize that he is, indeed, the Jabberwock.

Beware the Jabberwock, my son, the jaws that bite the claws that snatch, beware the JubJub bird (HusseinMohammed Obama) and shun the frubious bandersnatch (Michelle Obama.)

Oh who knew he had a network security problem - that explains how all these anti-semitic, socialist, communist, rabid anti-american groups were able to create groups - damn them hax0rs. Couldn't be that these are his constituencies (sorry, I know don't judge a person by his associations).

Also, watch for any "discoveries" that his new infosec ninjas find.

142 ashan  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 1:52:27pm

Someone with the skills should be able to carry out database exploits on any of BHO's sites before they find a professional to close them up. There are some open directories that Charles pointed out in an earlier thread and elsewhere. These can be used to drill down into the databases. If the directories are open, the databases will be exposed too. This should pull up some very interesting information.

143 the_flying_pig  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 1:55:59pm

Obama, as President, will create a massive federal bureaucracy called the Ministry of Internet Security to consolidate NSA, CIA, DHS, FBI, NRO, DOD, NID, and every ABC agency there is together. When asked, Obama will say:

"We all needed to be ONE than just having too many ABC agencies working separately. The Internet is a very big place to deal with."

Let's see - a salaried position with possible housing assistance if new hire is moving to Boston with commitment through November...

I doubt that they understand the market enough to know what this is going to cost them...

And they deserve what they get for what they probably want to pay...

145 Blitherakt  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 2:28:32pm

Just an aside, Slashdot had an article about this on the first of June.

The /. blurb mentions that this went up shortly after somebody redirected his site to Clinton's.

As always (sadly), security isn't important until you have to do it...

Wow. So they've known about problems at the site since June 1st, and still left all those directories open?

It's even worse than I thought. This is sheer incompetence.

Unfortunately, "our" side can be every bit as short-sighted. David Frum has a nice example in his book on his years in the Bush White House.

A deputy NSA was needed. A candidate was found who was both qualified and politically saw eye-to-eye with the White House. Andy Card (then CoS of the White House, and apparently very fond of what Frum terms "cheese-paring") offered a salary of... US$55K. For a deputy NSA. An professor of Mongolian gay literature at East Bumbledonk State University earns twice as much.

The guy (whose job paid like 5 times as much) said: "I'm willing to make financial sacrifices for my country, but not SUCH big ones." Rather than up the offer, he gave the job to a State Department type whom he could get for "free" (as he was already on the civil service payroll).

Needless to say, the new deputy NSA represented the interests and policy preferences of Foggy Bottom rather than 1600 Penn. Ave.

I am going to say it again and slowly so that moonbats can understand it: If Obama can't handle website security he cannot handle National security.

Peace Out
