From the Associated Press: Questionable explosion destroys airplane landing in Sudan, after originating in Syria and stopping in Jordan:

However, Youssef Ibrahim, director of the Khartoum airport, denied that bad weather caused the crash, saying a technical reason was to blame.

He said the plane had "landed safely" in Khartoum and that the pilot talked to control tower and got directions for his landing runway.

"At this moment, one of the (plane's) engines exploded and the plane caught fire," Ibrahim told Sudanese TV. He said there were survivors, but gave no figures.

Apparently many people were killed.

One can only hope for an afternoon open thread on a day when the weather can only change for the cooler in the NYC metro area. Will Obama claim that the heat caused by Bush's global warming resulted in his latest gaffes on dealing with his VP selection committee choices?

tolerance in indonesia

The religion needs to be defended "from people who want to destroy Islam's teachings," said demonstrator Zairin, who like many Indonesian goes by a single name. The use of violence would be justified to force reluctant Ahmadiyah members to renounce their faith and "keep Islam pure," he said.

The face of the anti-war movement fires back
(subtitle: Liberals eating their own)

BACK WHEN she made national news railing against the war and protesting outside the president's Texas ranch, I slammed Cindy Sheehan.

I called her misguided and said she was no Rosa Parks. I wrote about "the disingenuous way" the grieving mom had politicized the death of her son, Casey, a soldier killed in Iraq four years ago.

"Saint Sheehan," I quipped in 2005.

On Saturday, Sheehan fired back, face-to-face.

"Who misguided me?" she said with a penetrating gaze as we sat at a dining room table of her host in North Seattle. "Who said I was 'a Rosa Parks'? I never made any comparison of myself to anybody."

The temperature in the room started to rise.

"To say I'm a grieving mother is absolutely true," she said. "I will be a grieving mother until I die. But to think that a grieving mother is not intelligent, is not articulate, cannot form her own opinions is ... misguided."

She added: "That somebody like you would think that somebody has to be pulling my strings or guiding me or telling me what to say is insulting. Whatever I say, whatever I do is coming from the best possible place inside me."

Ron Paul plans his own convention

Maverick GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul has booked an arena in Minneapolis for a "mini-convention" that could steal some of John McCain's thunder just days before he accepts the Republican nomination.

A Paul campaign aide said the Texas congressman hopes to pack about 11,000 supporters into the Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota on Sept. 2, which coincides with the second day of the Republican National Convention at the Xcel Energy Center in neighboring St. Paul.

Paul, 72, will announce details for the rally Thursday at the start of the Texas Republican Convention in Houston.

The campaign hopes the daylong event will "send a message to the Republican Party," Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton tells the Tribune-Review.

Even with armed bodyguards, correspondents are constantly concerned about security. After Engel told his editors in an e-mail that he had nearly been kidnapped by gun-wielding carjackers, a network executive scolded him, saying that security issues should be brought up only with a small group of the top brass. Engel was furious.

...

During the conversation, Engel wasn't shy about offering solutions to the conflict, such as dividing Iraq into three states with a weak central government. At one point -- based on notes he took afterward -- Engel said, referring to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice: "Mr. President, you need to get involved. It's your vision. You're the president. Condi doesn't have the juice."

Engel has described himself as a "pacifist" but says that it hasn't affected his reporting and that he has credited Bush's surge with greatly reducing violence in the country.

In case anyone is interested in an update:

I just threw the Swedes under the bus.

The beginning of the story is: The state television network in Sweden, SVT1 (the Swedish equivalent of the BBC) contacted me, asking if they could use some of my videos in a TV series they were making about protests and protesters. I asked how much they were offering to pay. They said, "Pay? This is public TV! We tend to get stuff for free. Send your videos here....etc.." I then asked, Well, will you be making fun of the protesters? They replied, "Making fun of them? Of course not! This is a show indoctrinating young kids to become left-wing radicals!"

Hence, I just sent them an email a few minutes ago: Oh, if you're not going to make fun of the protesters, then I want nothing to do with you. Go jump in the lake.

I think they had no clue that zombietime was, shall we say, "on the other side." They looked at my photos and videos and thought, "Wow, what heroic protesters!"

I mean really, the nerve some of these networks have.

Early reports indicate bad weather at time of landing.

The plane was arriving from Amman, Jordan, airport security officials said, and was landing in bad weather when it overshot the runway, crashed and caught fire. "Many people" are believed dead, an official said.

However, it was not clear whether the plane actually crashed.

The chief of the Khartoum airport told Al-Jazeera Arabic TV network the plane landed safely, but an explosion occurred in one of its engines before it came to a stop, about 10 minutes after the plane had landed.

Abbas al-Fadini, a member of the Sudanese parliament who was on the plane, told Al-Jazeera that "the fire was inside the plane."

"It started from the right engine and then spread to the inside of the plane," he said.

Bob's family was horrified at the idea that his relationship with Dorothy might have become sexual. At his age, they wouldn't have thought it possible. But when Bob's son walked in and saw his dad's 82-year-old girlfriend performing oral sex on his 95-year-old father last December, incredulity turned into full-blown panic. "I didn't know where this was going to end," said the manager of the assisted-living facility where Bob and Dorothy lived. "It was pretty volatile."

School Apologizes to Muslim Student Over Graduation Held in Church

A Muslim student who sued because his public high school graduation ceremony was held in a Baptist church has received an apology from Newark's school district and assurances that it will not hold future events in houses of worship.

Bilal Shareef said he had to skip his 2006 graduation from West Side High School because his religious beliefs prohibit him from entering buildings containing icons of God.

The lawsuit was filed on his behalf by the American Civil Liberties Union. Newark public schools apologized to Shareef and his father and agreed to change its policies under terms of the settlement announced Monday.

When I got my driver's license a year and a half ago, I waited for two hours before they even called me up to the counter. There were sixteen counters they could have been using, but only six were open. It wasn't like it was a slow day, either -- the building was freaking packed. When they finally did call my number, they looked over some papers and had me sit back down for another half hour before they took my picture. As if that wasn't fun enough, I didn't get my actual driver's license for another five weeks.

What is really funny is the senate is now going to 'privatize' their restaurants. They want to run our health care, yet they can't even run a lunchroom.

Most of them couldn't run a lemonade stand without government subsidies.

Northwest's new ad campaign - "Fly Northwest - We're Slightly Better Than Sudan Airways!"

Flew Kuwait Air once in the '70s. It was during the Haj to Mecca. We got on and my dad had to throw a fuss because they flight crew wanted my parents to hold all 3 of us kids on there laps so they could put more people on the plane.

Dad won that fight, but blew a gasket after all the seats where filled, folks started getting on carrying folding chairs and setting them in the aisle.

Now dad was a licensed pilot, and did a quick estimation of the the density altitude in his head. 110° at sea level is close to the air density at 5000ft.

We were getting off or the other people where. The pilot was relived because he knew this was a problem but apparently the airline was pressuing him.

Everyone extra got off.

The National Poetry Contest had come down to two semifinalists-a Yale
graduate and a redneck. They were given a word, then allowed two minutes to
come up with a poem that contained the word. The word they were given was
"Timbuktu."

First to recite his poem was the Yale graduate. He stepped to the microphone
and said:

Slowly across the desert sand
Trekked a lonely caravan
Men on camels, two by two
Destination-Timbuktu.

The crowd went crazy! No way could the redneck top that, they thought. The
redneck calmly made his way to the microphone and recited:

Me and Tim a huntin went
Met three whores in a pop-up tent
They was three, and we was two
So I bucked one, and Timbuktu.

The redneck won hands down

Opposition councillor's son burnt alive by Mugabe militia

For a wad of worthless Zimbabwean banknotes, President Robert Mugabe's militias burnt six-year-old Nyasha Mashoko to death. The target of the ZANU-PF thugs had been the boy's father, Brian Mamhova. They came for him on Friday night - three truckloads of them, plus a Mercedes-Benz from which alighted three armed men in suits, Mr Mamhova said. (Snip) ''They locked the door where my wife was. They smashed the windows and threw petrol inside. Then they lit it,' .....

re: #42 zombie

It was Sweden; you should have told them to jump in a fjord.

Cardinal Tauran replied: "Yes, people are obsessed by Islam. For example I'm going to India next month and I want to give this message that all religions are equal. Sometimes there are priorities because of particular situations, but we mustn't get the impression there are first-class religions and second-class religions".

Who is this clown?

Cardinal Tauran said that Christians "have many things in common with other believers - for example that we all believe in one God, that we profess the same sacredness of life, the necessity of fraternity, the experience of prayer".

Yes, and they believe in Allah only, the sacredness of Muslim life only, the necessity of the ummah only, and the "experience of prayer," preferably on a buzzing rug.

Thanks, Ben.

I've emailed other lefty bloggers from time to time when the attacks get out of hand, and they have all, every single one of them, refused to do anything about it.

It's pretty clear that people like Ben Smith invite those kinds of comments, then stand back and preach about "free speech" when someone objects.

Prayers for him and his.

Not hardly.

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

There have been several plane major crashes in Sudan over the last two decades.

The Sudanese Air Force has been reputed to be using Russian mercenary pilots and support staff for its MiG-29's.

Whenever a major plane crash is reported from Sudan, (or Iran or several other "enemy" nations), I wonder who was aboard.

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

===

Given the relative lack of maintenance and care in the Third World for all aircraft, regardless of national manufacture, and the state of most Third World airports, combined with the well deserved poor reputation of various Russian and Chinese built aircraft, I'm surprised they aren't falling out of the sky on a daily basis.

Although Sudan "de-nationalized" Sudan Airways in '07, the government retains some 30% control of the company. This crash involved one of two Airbus 310's owned and operated by Sudan Airways.

The Airbus 310 has a reasonably good record. Out of 255 built, only 14 have suffered major crashes.

The Airbus 310 is a long range aircraft. Why was Sudan Airways using it for short in-county hops? Why did the pilots attempt a landing in a sandstorm, as is now being reported?

This is horrible.

The bodies of two girls were found shot to death in their rural community, along a dirt road the best friends used dozens of times to play and walk to sleepovers. By Tuesday investigators had found no suspects and were unsure of the motive for Sunday's killings of 13-year-old Taylor Paschal-Placker and 11-year-old Skyla Whitaker.

Taylor's grandfather found their bodies after his wife got no answer when she called Taylor's cellular phone. The girls were sleeping over at Taylor's house and had decided to take a walk down the desolate road Sunday afternoon.

Peter Placker sobbed uncontrollably Monday as he tried to remember finding the girls' bodies about a quarter of a mile from his house near Weleetka, about 70 miles south of Tulsa.

"I can't describe coming up on it," he said. "I done it once and I can't do it again."

Kevin Rowland, chief investigator with the state medical examiner's office, said the girls each suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

Anyway we became friends with some of the nurses and they told us that patients with memory problems are found in other patients beds.

I used that one in college once.

Iraqi-Born Teen Wins 2008 Miss Headscarf in Denmark

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A Danish TV station said Tuesday it has chosen an Iraqi-born woman as winner of the Miss Headscarf 2008 competition, as the Nordic country debates Islamic traditions in the aftermath of a deadly attack on its embassy.

356 godfrey  Tue, Jun 10, 2008 3:10:42pm

Now that the thread has died: a friend of mine brought me some Chaource cheese from France. Being polite, I'm eating it now, for the first time, and thankfully in private. Judging from its smell and taste, eating this cheese must closely resemble the experience of tasting the ass of a goat. I just thought you'd all like to know. "A French goat," you retort. Fine. A French goat.

So, are you still eating it and if so why? If you're going to dispose of it I suggest you put it in a ziplock bag as stink food tends to intensify in the trash.

re: #365 bosforus

I was in the Atlanta airport last month at the bar in the middle of the place. Beautiful girl's sitting there, reading Elizabeth Gilbert's new book, Eat, Love, Pray (something like that). In that book, there is a first-rate, spot-on, absolutely accurate transcription of a typical Italian fan's commentary on a match as it elapses. She does it in facing translation. I almost cried, I was laughing so hard.

Ever see those t-shirts printed with "abs of steel" or tuxedo stuff? Why doesn't some enterprising Persian make a burqa with a nude female body printed on it? Technically, it's not of any particular person, and it isn't real, so what objection could there be?

Well, the women wearing them, who would be subsequently attacked and raped, might mind. The men who are not even used to seeing wrists and ankles and have no self control would go crazy.

OR, she was a vision. Tight black suit, spotless blouse, fit as a fiddle, and with that frowny look of concentration that makes you think she might have something interesting to say. And she did. All the usual scenarios pop into mind after you have a conversation and hit it off, viz., "where's your ticket to? Let's change both of ours and spend the weekend in Geneva."

If yes... what is my HTML deficient mind missing.
