Wednesday Afternoon Open

Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 2:45:22 pm PDT

Here’s an open thread for a very warm Wednesday afternoon, as I try to wean myself from my addiction to the LGF Spy.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

Thank God, an open thread. Now can someone help me with a technical problem that is bugging me:

You know the current Hitler (Downfall) meme on YouTube where people subtitle a scene from the film Downfall with whatever topic amuses them (Hillary dressing down her campaign managers, themes about soccer or ice hockey etc) well my problem is I'm technically illiterate so how do you do that? How do you get that clip from Downfall and put your own subtitles on it? I want to do it as a practical joke on a workmate. I have a mac with iMovie and iDVD. What do I do next? Please help.

Man, those communists are smart:

HAVANA - The egalitarian wage system Fidel Castro spent decades building in Cuba is no longer viable, plagued by low pay, corruption and waste that can be eased by paying workers more for better work, a top labor official said in an interview published Wednesday.

Paying people more... if they produce better work... wow, the mind boggles!

I was stuck in traffic today so I ended up listening to the Loofah Man's radio show. On it he warned fellow talking heads and republicans not to make Michelle Obama an issue in the election, claiming it would turn off independents.

This perplexes me, insofar as she would be First Lady she would be representing this country. Her opinions and views don't matter?

As for Loofah Man's position I recall he has been trying endlessly to get Obama on his program " for the folks". Guess that explains that.

That Lightworker bit is a few days old - might be the Chronicle is just now republishing that opinion piece from a few days back.

I'm not positive re what is going on, but I am positive about this: Barack Hussein Obama has never in his entire life done, said or written the first thing that makes him in any way the moral or intellectual superior of anyone, puts him in any position to teach anyone or, most importantly, qualifies him in any way at all to be the President of the United States of America. That he would even think that he is so qualified is pure hubris. And maybe a good old fashioned case of schizophrenia.

I work with the locals on the Arctic shores and they say their parents tell stories of previous warm/cold cycles, of times when the bears were like rabbits (big, man-eating rabbits, but you get the picture) and of times when they were scarce. Hell, the old-school Inuk hunted the same animals as the bears and needed the ice to access the seals too - they were pretty good observers of "climate change" and long before it became fashionable.

But what do they know - hell, they even wear FUR.

A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on

Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by

'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer

Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.

'Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.'

The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show

'Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on
arrival in France!'

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he

My ex-husband was in the Air Force and my daughter was born in West Germany at Hahn AFB. Her birth certificate states that she is "an American Citizen born abroad".

If she were so inclined, I beleive she would qualify to run as POTUS, right?

I think that someone in power (hello Mr. McCain) needs to insist that Obambi produce proof that he is eligible to be president.

I think it would be fun just because i might be so irritating to BHO. Anything to piss him off. Might even be good for his kids to know where daddy really came from

From the media bias file, the Senate Republican's attempt to open the outer shelf to oil exploration was shot down today by Democrats in committee. Neither CNN nor MSNBC bothered to report this on either their web home pages or business pages (FOX did).

But MSNBC did have this pearl of unbiased "journalism" via the AP:

WASHINGTON - Saved by Senate Republicans, big oil companies dodged an attempt Tuesday to slap them with a windfall profits tax and take away billions of dollars in tax breaks in response to the record gasoline prices that have the nation fuming.

GOP senators shoved aside the Democratic proposal, arguing that punishing Big Oil won’t do a thing to lower the $4-a-gallon-price of gasoline that is sending economic waves across the country. High prices at the pump are threatening everything from summer vacations to Meals on Wheels deliveries to the elderly.

The Democratic energy package would have imposed a 25 percent tax on any “unreasonable” profits of the five largest U.S. oil companies, which together made $36 billion during the first three months of the year. It also would have given the government more power to address oil market speculation, opened the way for antitrust actions against countries belonging to the OPEC oil cartel, and made energy price gouging a federal crime.

The Obama campaign had been pushing this for some while now. More recently they have given Michelle O her very own campaign staff just like hubby's. I suspect to try to keep her mouth shut. First Lady material the gal is not.

Question #1 - Citizenship
By Mark from Ames, IA - Aug 24th, 2007 at 4:11 pm EDT

Why should anybody have a moral right to citizenship in any country? I was born here, but why does that give me more of a right to citizenship than somebody born elsewhere? Why should I have a right to citizenship because I was born here, but (as some suggest) people born here to non-citizens should have no such right? Why should some freeloader who has never done a lick of constructive work here, but was born here, have more of a right to citizenship than somebody who came here illegally but has worked his tail off for 10 years and been a contributing member of society? Shouldn't citizenship be earned by everyone?

Huh?

re: #164 offendi

People reference the 20 years Obama spent in Wright's pews hearing Wright's "ideas" and doubt they did not influence him or that he may have shared them. It seems to me that being married to a person is even more intimate and shows shared values in addition to the commitment. So I would think Michelle's comments and views are totally relevant to who Obama himself is. He does have a sparse public record so far.

The thing that bothers me the very most about his public record is not the length of it, but the fact that if you go and look at his voting record there are entire categories of issues - abortion and health care are two of them - where he has never in the entire time that he has been in the Senate cast either a yea or a nay, voting "present" or not voting at all every single time. That reads to me like a deliberate and willful effort to hide and obfuscate what he believes on issues that much of the voting public considers among the most important facing our nation.

One thing you cannot help but notice about Obama and his lies is that he is used to lying, so much that he almost believes that whatever he says today is "truth." If you can't tolerate another post about Ben Stein's Expelled, skip this post.

I'm reading a fascinating book called The Immortalists and quite unexpectedly came across something relevant to the the controversial movie.

Nobel prize in medicine winner Alexis Carrel and aviator Charles Lindbergh teamed up to develop a sort of artificial heart. They believed that through science they could lengthen human life and eventually achieve immortality.

Both were attracted to eugenics as the application of evolution. Lindbergh was enthralled by the industrial and scientific achievements of Germany.

When Germany attacked France, Carrel (a Frenchman) had a change of heart. Lindbergh became a leader of the "America First" movement.

After the war, Lindbergh saw first hand evidence of the Nazi's use of slave labor in their V2 rocket program.

Several years later, he repented for what he had done. In the book he wrote, he said that when men worship science it leads to evil. The Nazis believed they were simply obeying nature's laws. (In fact, this was an idea that Carrel championed earlier.)

The Immortalists by David M. Friedman was published last year.

Obviously, there is much more to the story. It wasn't until the death camps were discovered that eugenics was finally discredited.

At the pace that Obama is going with throwing so many under the bus.....doesn't it bother anyone on the left that sooner or later he will toss them under the bus as well?

it is remarkable how many people and organizations he has flung up under there. he is a weak person. he won't fight for anyone or anything for too long. and he is a bad judge of character to affiliate w/ so much "rubbish" that must be disposed of.
i was thinking how he himself was thrown under the bus by his own mother. he was the first casualty of the desertion tactic he now so easily uses.
it's kind of pathetic.
and that statement abt, " being punished w/ a child" regarding his daughter, goes right along w/ his inability to make real bonds w/ people.
look for more casualties. i bet those around him are worrying.

Jewish Dem donor joins McCain team

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is attracting elite Jewish Democratic donors who backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and are concerned about Sen. Barack Obamas (D-Ill.) stance toward Israel, say McCain backers who are organizing the effort to court Democrats.

McCain has already had several fundraising events with Jewish Democrats in Washington and Florida, say his supporters.

He also has the backing of Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.), who made history as the first Jewish vice presidential candidate and has recently raised questions about Obamas foreign policy vision for the Middle East.

(I know a bit about this because my Lizard in Training was born in England.)

First we prove he wasn't born in Hawaii....then Hillary will take care of he rest!

Yes, it's very easily dismissed. This is a deceptive, reductionist, anti-science argument advanced by far-right groups to attack evolution and promote pseudo-scientific nonsense, and it's very much like Holocaust denial.

I'm not impressed with arguments that are based on assumptions about your opponent's motivations.

And I don't think it's fair to characterize a philosophical position you don't agree with as "very much like Holocaust denial." Unless you can show that the two ideas are linked, or at least that leading ID proponents are Holocaust deniers, then it's nothing more than a smear.

Like it or not, evolution is very tightly linked to eugenics.

After Islam flap, schools may limit religious assemblies

Excerpts:

Most of the Friendswood [Texas; near Houston] residents at a meeting demand junior high re-hires principal, some blast local officials, and others suspect group who gave presentation is linked to terrorists

About 200 Friendswood residents, divided over a junior high principal's decision to let an Islamic group make a presentation to students last month, packed Tuesday night's school board meeting as the governing body considered whether to ban any future religious presentations by outsiders.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Houston sought permission to address the mostly Anglo student body at Friendswood Junior High after a Muslim student was stuffed head-first into a trash can by a classmate. Principal Robin Lowe agreed to the 40-minute PowerPoint presentation on the basic beliefs of Islam, which drew howls of protest from some parents, talk radio hosts and Christian clergy.

....Other speakers, however, accused CAIR of having links to terrorism.

....However, M.A. Khalili, a CAIR board member, vehemently denied the organization has any ties to terrorism.

....Hanks described the trash can incident as a "random, impulsive act" that had nothing to do with religious preference or ethnicity. The offending student was disciplined, she said.
....Hanks told the crowd the Islamic group had viewed the incident involving the Muslim student as a "hate crime" and had even reported it to the FBI.

Hanks also said she allowed Lowe and an assistant superintendent to meet with the Islamic group.

But she had not given approval for the group to make a presentation, which including the statement that "Allah is God for all human beings," to the student body.

She called the Islamic group's presentation "a misunderstanding and miscommunication" which deviated from established policy.

I bought a new Ford F-150 and returned to the dealer the next day because I couldn't get the radio to work.

The salesman explained that the radio was voice activated.'Nelson,' the salesman said to the radio. The radio replied, 'Ricky or Willie?' 'Willie!' he continued and 'On the Road Again' came from the speakers.

Then he said, 'Ray Charles!', and in an instant ' Georgia On My Mind' replaced Willie Nelson.

I drove away happy, and for the next few days, every time I'd say, 'Beethoven,' I'd get beautiful classical music, and if I said, 'Beatles', I'd get one of their classic songs.

Yesterday, a couple ran a red light and nearly creamed my new truck, but I swerved in time to avoid them. I yelled, 'Ass Holes!'

Immediately the Iranian National Anthem began to play, sung by Jane Fonda and Barbara Streisand, backed up by Michael Moore and The Dixie Chicks, with John Kerry on guitar, Al Gore on drums, Dan Rather on harmonica, Nancy Pelosi on tambourine, Harry Reid on spoons, Bill Clinton on sax and Ted Kennedy on Scotch.

This actually hasn't been tested yet. There hasn't been an American that wasn't born on American soil that has tried to run. Maybe its been mentioned but there was an issue with McCain as he was born in the Panama Canal (on a military base). I would guess that if it WAS tested, so long as the child was born to American Citizen parents and not a foreigner on a military base, it would be considered a birth on American soil.

Their daughter was born here, but she was specifically not given US citizenship. Something else that changed about that time is that dual citizens no longer had to choose between the two nations as they did when my child and Obama were born. Now they can hold two passports - which is why we had to go rescue a whole bunch of "Americans" living in Lebanon a couple of years ago.

Charles,

I don't think you even know my position.

I am strongly opposed to dogma in science. I don't have any attachment to ID other than I notice the science establishment goes apoplectic when it is mentioned.

I see ID as just a hypothesis. I'll not hesitate one nanosecond to dismiss it if and when evolutionists perform either of the following experiments:

1. A verifiable and repeatable experiment that shows one species transformed into another; or

2. A verifiable and repeatable experiment that shows life formed from raw chemicals.

Until then, I think anyone who is interested in scientific truth should be a bit more humble... ID may be wrong, but evolution has serious weaknesses, too. The ID hypothesis could, if nothing else, inspire research that will settle the issue.

I suppose I could say that at present evolution is like global warming. Most scientists believe in global warming. In fact, Al Gore said that those who don't are "flat earthers."

Are there really people out there who care about Frank Luntz and his focus groups?

I've little by little quit watching even Fox... I used to watch O'Reilly until he did a very big waffle on Iraq. And then I quit that. And then I saw Pat Buchanan being deified and I pretty much quit altogether. I see Pat B. in the same light as the Belgium types that we tussled with here on LGF.

It isn't unconstitutional as far as I know.

If I seem unwilling to let comments promoting the intelligent design hoax stand unchallenged ... it's because I am.

It's a hoax. It's promoted by deceptive groups and religious fanatics.

My first and only "examination" of it was ages ago, when the idea first came out. It was a very quick pass indeed, but the fundamental idea sounded somewhat reasonable. I'm afraid to read up on it today. Wouldn't be surprised to find out I hate what it's likely to have become.

/spout-off mode on

Personally, I believe there's a Creator who may well have caused a Big Bang, or whatever. In doing so, he knew what would come as a result of it. I do not believe he's a hands-on genetic engineer. I also believe that Darwin's evolution is perfectly sound (though, like any scientific theory, it probably needs tweaking.) In other words, yes, I believe in a certain form of "intelligent design", but don't lump me in with the others.

By the way, about "assumptions:" we've argued this over and over, and many facts have been offered to support my conclusions. They're conclusions, not assumptions. You've just ignored everything you don't want to hear.

Is that radio available aftermarket? I gotta get me one; all I can get on mine is the CBC (Communist Broadcasting Corporation, up here in Canada) and they won't do requests - I keep tellin' them to shut the h#ll up but they won't.

I think Macro evolution is absurd and silly.

I'm asked to believe that just given enough time and some chance, an amobeoa or some such tiny thing or a pool of slime can develop into or put forth a dog, or an elephant can morph into a kangaroo or whatever.

~And people who swallow all of macro evolution whole think that sounds perfectly reasonable and scientific.

re: #443 Armywife

This actually hasn't been tested yet. There hasn't been an American that wasn't born on American soil that has tried to run. Maybe its been mentioned but there was an issue with McCain as he was born in the Panama Canal (on a military base). I would guess that if it WAS tested, so long as the child was born to American Citizen parents and not a foreigner on a military base, it would be considered a birth on American soil.

McCain is a non issue. The Panama Canal Zone at the time that he was born was US territory. (As it still was when Obama was born I believe.) He is as 100% natural born, native born American as he would be if he were born in Kansas, Boston or the Lincoln Bedroom.
