I just got back from the "Forest" - Dave Johnson's site - and I feel like I need to wash.
Arguing with some of those folks is like wrestling with a pig: you get dirty and sweaty and the pig enjoys it.

Thank God, an open thread. Now can someone help me with a technical problem that is bugging me:
You know the current Hitler (Downfall) meme on YouTube where people subtitle a scene from the film Downfall with whatever topic amuses them (Hillary dressing down her campaign managers, themes about soccer or ice hockey etc) well my problem is I'm technically illiterate so how do you do that? How do you get that clip from Downfall and put your own subtitles on it? I want to do it as a practical joke on a workmate. I have a mac with iMovie and iDVD. What do I do next? Please help.

Man, those communists are smart:
HAVANA - The egalitarian wage system Fidel Castro spent decades building in Cuba is no longer viable, plagued by low pay, corruption and waste that can be eased by paying workers more for better work, a top labor official said in an interview published Wednesday.
Paying people more... if they produce better work... wow, the mind boggles!

I was stuck in traffic today so I ended up listening to the Loofah Man's radio show. On it he warned fellow talking heads and republicans not to make Michelle Obama an issue in the election, claiming it would turn off independents.
This perplexes me, insofar as she would be First Lady she would be representing this country. Her opinions and views don't matter?
As for Loofah Man's position I recall he has been trying endlessly to get Obama on his program " for the folks". Guess that explains that.

That Lightworker bit is a few days old - might be the Chronicle is just now republishing that opinion piece from a few days back.
I'm not positive re what is going on, but I am positive about this: Barack Hussein Obama has never in his entire life done, said or written the first thing that makes him in any way the moral or intellectual superior of anyone, puts him in any position to teach anyone or, most importantly, qualifies him in any way at all to be the President of the United States of America. That he would even think that he is so qualified is pure hubris. And maybe a good old fashioned case of schizophrenia.

I work with the locals on the Arctic shores and they say their parents tell stories of previous warm/cold cycles, of times when the bears were like rabbits (big, man-eating rabbits, but you get the picture) and of times when they were scarce. Hell, the old-school Inuk hunted the same animals as the bears and needed the ice to access the seals too - they were pretty good observers of "climate change" and long before it became fashionable.
But what do they know - hell, they even wear FUR.

A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on
a tour.
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by
plane.. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his
passport in his carry on.
'You have been to France before, monsieur?' the customs officer
asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
'Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.'
The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show
it.'
'Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on
arrival in France!'
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he
quietly explained. 'Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on
D-D ay in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any
Frenchmen
to show it to.'

My ex-husband was in the Air Force and my daughter was born in West Germany at Hahn AFB. Her birth certificate states that she is "an American Citizen born abroad".
If she were so inclined, I beleive she would qualify to run as POTUS, right?
I think that someone in power (hello Mr. McCain) needs to insist that Obambi produce proof that he is eligible to be president.
I think it would be fun just because i might be so irritating to BHO. Anything to piss him off. Might even be good for his kids to know where daddy really came from

From the media bias file, the Senate Republican's attempt to open the outer shelf to oil exploration was shot down today by Democrats in committee. Neither CNN nor MSNBC bothered to report this on either their web home pages or business pages (FOX did).
But MSNBC did have this pearl of unbiased "journalism" via the AP:
WASHINGTON - Saved by Senate Republicans, big oil companies dodged an attempt Tuesday to slap them with a windfall profits tax and take away billions of dollars in tax breaks in response to the record gasoline prices that have the nation fuming.
GOP senators shoved aside the Democratic proposal, arguing that punishing Big Oil won’t do a thing to lower the $4-a-gallon-price of gasoline that is sending economic waves across the country. High prices at the pump are threatening everything from summer vacations to Meals on Wheels deliveries to the elderly.
The Democratic energy package would have imposed a 25 percent tax on any “unreasonable” profits of the five largest U.S. oil companies, which together made $36 billion during the first three months of the year. It also would have given the government more power to address oil market speculation, opened the way for antitrust actions against countries belonging to the OPEC oil cartel, and made energy price gouging a federal crime.

The Obama campaign had been pushing this for some while now. More recently they have given Michelle O her very own campaign staff just like hubby's. I suspect to try to keep her mouth shut. First Lady material the gal is not.

At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large

Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, 'Maybe it's

People reference the 20 years Obama spent in Wright's pews hearing Wright's "ideas" and doubt they did not influence him or that he may have shared them. It seems to me that being married to a person is even more intimate and shows shared values in addition to the commitment. So I would think Michelle's comments and views are totally relevant to who Obama himself is. He does have a sparse public record so far.

Question #1 - Citizenship
By Mark from Ames, IA - Aug 24th, 2007 at 4:11 pm EDT
Why should anybody have a moral right to citizenship in any country? I was born here, but why does that give me more of a right to citizenship than somebody born elsewhere? Why should I have a right to citizenship because I was born here, but (as some suggest) people born here to non-citizens should have no such right? Why should some freeloader who has never done a lick of constructive work here, but was born here, have more of a right to citizenship than somebody who came here illegally but has worked his tail off for 10 years and been a contributing member of society? Shouldn't citizenship be earned by everyone?
Huh?

re: #164 offendi
People reference the 20 years Obama spent in Wright's pews hearing Wright's "ideas" and doubt they did not influence him or that he may have shared them. It seems to me that being married to a person is even more intimate and shows shared values in addition to the commitment. So I would think Michelle's comments and views are totally relevant to who Obama himself is. He does have a sparse public record so far.
The thing that bothers me the very most about his public record is not the length of it, but the fact that if you go and look at his voting record there are entire categories of issues - abortion and health care are two of them - where he has never in the entire time that he has been in the Senate cast either a yea or a nay, voting "present" or not voting at all every single time. That reads to me like a deliberate and willful effort to hide and obfuscate what he believes on issues that much of the voting public considers among the most important facing our nation.

One thing you cannot help but notice about Obama and his lies is that he is used to lying, so much that he almost believes that whatever he says today is "truth." He'll deny he said something different yesterday even as the tape of him saying it is being played back to him. Chronic liars are dangerous.

If you can't tolerate another post about Ben Stein's Expelled, skip this post.
I'm reading a fascinating book called The Immortalists and quite unexpectedly came across something relevant to the the controversial movie.
Nobel prize in medicine winner Alexis Carrel and aviator Charles Lindbergh teamed up to develop a sort of artificial heart. They believed that through science they could lengthen human life and eventually achieve immortality.
Both were attracted to eugenics as the application of evolution. Lindbergh was enthralled by the industrial and scientific achievements of Germany.
When Germany attacked France, Carrel (a Frenchman) had a change of heart. Lindbergh became a leader of the "America First" movement.
After the war, Lindbergh saw first hand evidence of the Nazi's use of slave labor in their V2 rocket program.
Several years later, he repented for what he had done. In the book he wrote, he said that when men worship science it leads to evil. The Nazis believed they were simply obeying nature's laws. (In fact, this was an idea that Carrel championed earlier.)
The Immortalists by David M. Friedman was published last year.
Obviously, there is much more to the story. It wasn't until the death camps were discovered that eugenics was finally discredited.

At the pace that Obama is going with throwing so many under the bus.....doesn't it bother anyone on the left that sooner or later he will toss them under the bus as well?
it is remarkable how many people and organizations he has flung up under there. he is a weak person. he won't fight for anyone or anything for too long. and he is a bad judge of character to affiliate w/ so much "rubbish" that must be disposed of.
i was thinking how he himself was thrown under the bus by his own mother. he was the first casualty of the desertion tactic he now so easily uses.
it's kind of pathetic.
and that statement abt, " being punished w/ a child" regarding his daughter, goes right along w/ his inability to make real bonds w/ people.
look for more casualties. i bet those around him are worrying.

Jewish Dem donor joins McCain team
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is attracting elite Jewish Democratic donors who backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and are concerned about Sen. Barack Obamas (D-Ill.) stance toward Israel, say McCain backers who are organizing the effort to court Democrats.
McCain has already had several fundraising events with Jewish Democrats in Washington and Florida, say his supporters.
He also has the backing of Democrat-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.), who made history as the first Jewish vice presidential candidate and has recently raised questions about Obamas foreign policy vision for the Middle East.

True, but Obama would still need a Consular Report of Birth, and I'm beginning to wonder if his mom or him ever bothered with that important bit of paperwork. Until a person has that piece of paper, he or she is NOT legally a natural-born American citizen.
(I know a bit about this because my Lizard in Training was born in England.)
First we prove he wasn't born in Hawaii....then Hillary will take care of he rest!
But Arnold is still never going to be eligible unless they make another amendment to the Constitution. By the time that passes all the bells and whistles, Arnold will be too old to run....which works for me!

The standard information on most long form birth certificates is date & time of birth, place of birth (hospital, etc.), name of witness(es) to birth, full name, address and birth place of parents, race. Yes, it's very easily dismissed. This is a deceptive, reductionist, anti-science argument advanced by far-right groups to attack evolution and promote pseudo-scientific nonsense, and it's very much like Holocaust denial.
I'm not impressed with arguments that are based on assumptions about your opponent's motivations.
And I don't think it's fair to characterize a philosophical position you don't agree with as "very much like Holocaust denial." Unless you can show that the two ideas are linked, or at least that leading ID proponents are Holocaust deniers, then it's nothing more than a smear.
Like it or not, evolution is very tightly linked to eugenics.

After Islam flap, schools may limit religious assemblies
Excerpts:
Most of the Friendswood [Texas; near Houston] residents at a meeting demand junior high re-hires principal, some blast local officials, and others suspect group who gave presentation is linked to terroristsAbout 200 Friendswood residents, divided over a junior high principal's decision to let an Islamic group make a presentation to students last month, packed Tuesday night's school board meeting as the governing body considered whether to ban any future religious presentations by outsiders.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Houston sought permission to address the mostly Anglo student body at Friendswood Junior High after a Muslim student was stuffed head-first into a trash can by a classmate. Principal Robin Lowe agreed to the 40-minute PowerPoint presentation on the basic beliefs of Islam, which drew howls of protest from some parents, talk radio hosts and Christian clergy.
....Other speakers, however, accused CAIR of having links to terrorism.
....However, M.A. Khalili, a CAIR board member, vehemently denied the organization has any ties to terrorism.
....Hanks described the trash can incident as a "random, impulsive act" that had nothing to do with religious preference or ethnicity. The offending student was disciplined, she said.
....Hanks told the crowd the Islamic group had viewed the incident involving the Muslim student as a "hate crime" and had even reported it to the FBI.Hanks also said she allowed Lowe and an assistant superintendent to meet with the Islamic group.
But she had not given approval for the group to make a presentation, which including the statement that "Allah is God for all human beings," to the student body.
She called the Islamic group's presentation "a misunderstanding and miscommunication" which deviated from established policy.

I bought a new Ford F-150 and returned to the dealer the next day because I couldn't get the radio to work.
The salesman explained that the radio was voice activated.'Nelson,' the salesman said to the radio. The radio replied, 'Ricky or Willie?' 'Willie!' he continued and 'On the Road Again' came from the speakers.
Then he said, 'Ray Charles!', and in an instant ' Georgia On My Mind' replaced Willie Nelson.
I drove away happy, and for the next few days, every time I'd say, 'Beethoven,' I'd get beautiful classical music, and if I said, 'Beatles', I'd get one of their classic songs.
Yesterday, a couple ran a red light and nearly creamed my new truck, but I swerved in time to avoid them. I yelled, 'Ass Holes!'
Immediately the Iranian National Anthem began to play, sung by Jane Fonda and Barbara Streisand, backed up by Michael Moore and The Dixie Chicks, with John Kerry on guitar, Al Gore on drums, Dan Rather on harmonica, Nancy Pelosi on tambourine, Harry Reid on spoons, Bill Clinton on sax and Ted Kennedy on Scotch.

I think you are probably right. Though I don't think it was so much corrected as just changed. About that same time I had neighbors from Turkey who were in the process of getting doctorates here. Their daughter was born here, but she was specifically not given US citizenship. Something else that changed about that time is that dual citizens no longer had to choose between the two nations as they did when my child and Obama were born. Now they can hold two passports - which is why we had to go rescue a whole bunch of "Americans" living in Lebanon a couple of years ago.

Until then, I think anyone who is interested in scientific truth should be a bit more humble... ID may be wrong, but evolution has serious weaknesses, too. The ID hypothesis could, if nothing else, inspire research that will settle the issue.

I just love how Islam, Wicca, and New Age can be taught in public schools, but absolutely no Judeo-Christian beliefs are tolerated at all.
I just saw on the news the other day about some kid who incorporated Christian themes in a drawing he did in art class, and his teacher gave him a "zero" for it.
-Not because the drawing was off (bad perspective, bad composition, etc), but the teacher objected to Christian content.

Secret al-Qaida, Iraq files found on British train
LONDON - Secret government documents on al-Qaida and Iraq were left on a commuter train, prompting a major police investigation into the latest in a series of embarrassing security breaches, British officials said Wednesday
The documents belonged to a senior intelligence official in the Cabinet office and were found by a passenger on a London commuter train Tuesday. The envelope was then passed to the British Broadcasting Corp.
The security breach is the latest in a string of government data losses and comes as Britain pushes for an expansion of its national DNA database — already the largest per capita in the world — and works to finalize plans for an ID program.
In another breach, tax officials last year lost computer disks containing information — including banking records — on nearly half the British population.

Evolution says nothing about the origin of the universe. It describes a mechanism that explains the profusion of species on this planet, a mechanism that has been extremely well documented, and is supported by scientific theory and evidence.
Intelligent design is a hoax promoted by the same people who were trying to promote "creationism" a few years back. They changed their tack when it became clear that creationism was discredited. The main proponent of this hoax is the Discovery Institute, and a leaked document from there spells this agenda out in detail. Look up the Wedge document at Wikipedia.

Please state the hypothesis.
The hypothesis is that there are some aspects of life that appear to require forethought.
I attached absolutely no religious meaning to that. My religious views are similar to Thomas Jefferson's. I believe in absolute truth and that the laws of nature extend to ethics. I don't observe any religious rituals, and I consider Creationism to be mythology.
But as someone deeply involved in the history of science, I know that great science requires total freedom of thought, and that throughout history science has been held back by science orthodoxy.

I think the problem really came about because most of the younger generation - even educated people in their forties - no longer remember (if they ever knew) that the Panama Canal Zone was once 100% American territory from sea to shining sea. Had he been born at Pearl Harbor nobody would have batted an eyelash, even though Pearl had the same territorial status at the time John McCain was born.

On McCain and citizenship, the "default" scenario is that he'd be allowed to run until/unless a court order prevented him from doing so.
I think it would take a successful US Supreme Court challenge to effectively disqualify him, and suffice it to say that scenario is extremely unlikely to the point of implausibility.
So as a practical matter, its not an issue.
As to Obama, until/unless someone can produce a foreign birth certificate for him, or prove that his American one was somehow falsified, I don't see how there is basis for a challenge. I wouldn't hold my breath for that one either.

Carter would have tried to give away Pearl Harbor also if Hawaii hadn't already been made a State!

Again, you're demonstrating only one thing: you don't understand the meaning of the term "scientific hypothesis."

To be there is a distinction between adaptions and evolutions. There is clear evidence that species adapt and change, but I'm not sure whether I believe in wholesale evolution (atoms to organizations).
Origins of the universe are all hypothetical, are they not?
Origin of the universe (prescient Creator) is a matter of developed, considered, faith with me. Didn't get it from a book (meaning, a dogma.) What happened between Bang and me? How did I get here? My bottom line is, that it's immaterial to me. There is a logic to Evolution. Okay, fine. I'm cool with it.

Obama, the post turtle
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher, whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his bid to be our President. The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Obama is a 'post turtle'. Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was. The old rancher said : When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. "You know he didn't get up there by himself. he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he is up there, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb ass put him up there to begin with."

I'll put my 2 cents in.
I think the following statement, or something like it, should be in textbooks that teach evolution, the Big Bang, etc.:
There is nothing in the scientific theories presented here that prove or disprove the existence of a Creator. They show how events occurred, not why.
It is possible that a Creator directed these events, but that is not a scientific question, as it cannot be proven or disproven.
Feel free to discuss with your parents and religious figures how to reconcile the evidence given here with your particular creation story; there are many books on the subject that reconcile scientific evidence with religion. However, such discussion should take place outside the school.
You will be responsible for understanding the scientific theories and the evidence supporting them, whether you believe them or not.

I'm not trying to stoke controversy per se.
I was just pointing out what *might* be involved if someone were *actually* going to try to disqualify either McCain or Obama based on this alleged citizenship issues.
For the record, I have no reason to think Obama isn't a US Citizen, and I think trying to disqualify him on that basis is petty.
People have asked Obama to show his birth certificate. Considering the circumstances of his birth, and that his opponent has shown his, I don't think the request is unreasonable.
I don't think anyone can COMPEL him to show it, short of a court order, and to get that, someone would have to some good reason to obtain one.
But I agree, whatever is on there, he's probably better off showing it. I can only think of a few reasons why he wouldn't, most of which are probably of no real signficance, and all of which have been covered elsewhere (eg one of his names was changed, his religion is listed as Muslim, etc).

And what kind of empirical experiment could disprove the audacious hypothesis that are aspects of life appear to require forethought? What is not falsifiable lies outside the realms of science. Period.
Good grief!
Listening to people like you on this forum and elsewhere has taken its toll of cognitive dissonance on me.
Conclusions are important, but even more important are the arguments and assumptions that led to any conclusion.
We likely agree on the imminent threat posed by radical Islam, but while I see it as a corrosive acid eating at my secular freedoms, some people see it in many ways as a rival ideological klan to their own (admittedly more modest) ambitions of religious theocracy in the school and/or in the courts.
We likely agree that man-made global warming is a scam, but judging from the sense of understanding of scientific theory and method that people like you display, I wonder how they came to such conclusion! Could it be that they don't understand, much less consider, the science (or lack thereof) behind it and just outright dismiss it because it is an inconvenient proposition (much like evolution)?
If you can't understand that evolution makes for great science, I doubt you can understand why global warming makes for awful science.
I don't care so much about agreeing on conclusions, but rather the principles behind them, and I regretfully feel very out of touch with a lot of people here.

Through the history of science, ideologues of one kind or another have attempted to bend science to their dogma. The Aristotelian natural philosophers, in alliance with religious fundamentalists tried to silence Galileo. The Communists tried to co-opt the term "scientific" to apply to their illogical & inhuman ideas about economics and society. The Nazis perverted science in their absurdly unscientific notions of eugenics & the Master Race.
And Intelligent Design activists are the intellectual heir to those same ideologues. They use the terminology of science and pretend to create scientific arguments to buttress what are essentially anti-scientific pre-formed religious ideas.

re: #527 Kosh's Shadow
There are not enough dings in the universe for your idea. YES.
GO TALK TO YOUR FOLKS ABOUT THIS STUFF! ITS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KNOW. Then figure out how what you learned fits into your worldview.
Full Stop.
Seriously. How hard can it be?
Then mom and dad can tell you its bunk, tell you perhaps thats how G-d did it, or that G-d doesnt mess with little stuff like details. Up to parents and religious figures to Splain CAUSE THATS THEIR JOB!
(My adopted kid is 20. I answered and answer all kinds of questions like this. It is my honour and pleasure to do so)

But me, I'm not asking who right now, only how much?
I'm asking who because we are being basically blackmailed by our own volition. Also because our (and the international) demand is causing a breakdown of order (and loss of life) in some places (Africa, etc.). So to me the "how much" is secondary to the "who" being ourselves producing our own energy.

That wasn't your only point.
You said ID was [just] another hypothesis.
So, what is the hypothesis?
I submit to you that you can't state one, because "intelligent design" by its very nature is a faith-based belief intrinsically untestable by the scientific method. Its simply not science and trying to lump it in with science is not only wrong. but deceptive.
If you disagree, feel free to prove me wrong by stating the testable hypothesis that you believe underlies intelligent design.
Also, positing that evolution is unproven, or even proving it partially or completely wrong, doesn't yield scientific support for ID.

The hypothesis is that there are some aspects of life that appear to require forethought.
How can you prove something like that? You can't. You find a rock on the ground. Can you prove it *required* forethought to be there, in that shape? Can you prove the opposite? That's not a valid scientific hypothesis.
Neither do I think that's what ID proposes. It proposes the (unprovable) negative hypothesis that it CANNOT have been a series of small changes that produced X. It proposes the positive hypothesis that intelligence WAS USED, not that it HAD TO BE USED. In a very great stretch, perhaps it could be proved that intelligence WAS USED, but to prove it, you're going to have to show it, not just hypothesize it.
Which makes the ID project pretty much non-scientific, until the diety shows up and does a demonstration. And that would make it valid science?
Paradoxical, hey.

7 Arrested for Cheering at High School Graduations
When school officials in Rock Hill, South Carolina, tell graduation ceremony crowds to hold their applause until the end, they mean it — Police arrested seven people after they were accused of loud cheering during the ceremonies.
Six people at Fort Mill High School’s graduation were charged Saturday and a seventh at the graduation for York Comprehensive High School was charged Friday with disorderly conduct, authorities said. Police said the seven yelled after students’ names were called.
“I just thought they were going to escort me out,” Jonathan Orr told The Herald of Rock Hill. “I had no idea they were going to put andcuffs on me and take me to jail.”

I always get prickly when anyone, even dear Lizards, state that public schools are failing as a generalization. There are too many variables for a blanket condemnation.
One of the most important is parental expectations for student behavior and achievement.
Without that, even the most dedicated teacher will not get too far with the kids. Fourteen of my 9th graders failed English for the YEAR.

Its a fig-leaf for preserving a fundamentalist belief into the 21st century. That's all.
(When I say "fundamentalist", I mean those who believe in the literal truth of their respective scripture).
Intelligent design is attractive, because its simple. "A made B". To understand it, you don't have to know anything about genetics, selection, populations, DNA, or a thousand other topics that are complicated and require considerable effort to master.
Personally, I think there are FAR more harmful and pernicious beliefs than "intelligent design".
I just don't want to see what is essentially a religious (or faith-based) belief lumped into the category of science, which is supposed to be entirely objective (or at least as objective as possible). Its insulting to science to call ID "science".

re: #618 itellu3times
The problem is that even if the unspoken hypothesis of ID WERE in fact true (that every extant species on the plant was created 6000 years ago ex nihilo by the Judeo-Christian diety described in the Old Testament), that **STILL** wouldn't DISPROVE evolution.
Even if God physically molded the first man from dirt and blew life into his nostrils, that still doesn't mean that species A can't turn into species B given the appropriate time and pressures.

Somewhat OT
About Hypotheses...Generally speaking hypotheses are going to be related to statistics and you'll have one or more variables (and you're arguing that there is some sort of relationship between these variables...then, you test your hypothesis...but you must state prior to the test what your criterion for success is...Soo, your "null" hypothesis is a statement for the status quo (no change), while the experimental hypothesis will state that there will be a change (positive or negative). there are criterion for making a "good" hypothesis: 1) The hypothesis will state the expected relationship between two or more variables 2) The researcher will be able to show why the hypothesis is worthy of testing -- that is, be able to state the reasons for having the hypothesis tested, based on a theory 3) The hypothesis must be testable 4) The hypothesis should be stated in a clear and concise fashion. (I don't see any way to state an ID hypothesis and satisfy these four criteria.

I don't think its entirely a matter of luck that this effort hasn't been entirely successful. Most Americans simply don't accept ID, or at least concede that faith-based beliefs aren't science and shouldn't be taught as such.
If prayer can be banned from the public schools, how is ID going to get in there nationally speaking?
Also, you can at least rest comfortably that there are pretty large parts of the country (eg the Northeast) where ID is derided. Intelligent design in Massachusetts classrooms? I don't think so.

Sort of a reason to keep state and religion separated. Or in this case, keep science and religion separated. I believe in creationism, and I believe intelligent design is an end around to try and get creationism in school.
I am an engineer and have always had to live with scientific fact. It hasn't changed my beliefs. One is faith, one is provable facts, or hypotheses.
My earliest experience was in a fairly low grade in Catholic school. A picture bible showing the creation of the earth. The pictures showed G_d creating the lions and the tigers, the bears and the sheep. It kind of puzzled me because I was pretty sure dinosaurs came before these kind of animals. So I asked the nun about the whole sequence of events. The answer was not exactly informative but I was pretty sure that it was a sin to talk about science in a Catholic school.
Since then my faith is one thing and my scientific knowledge is another. I try not to mix the two.

A question I didn't answer earlier...
In science, a hypothesis can be anything from a hunch to a highly educated guess.
Many great scientific discoveries were based on hunches. Michael Faraday, one of the greatest experimentalists, believed that light and magnetism are related. He had no factual evidence. He spent twenty years trying to prove it--and finally did.
Einstein's theory of relativity was based on the insight or belief that the speed of light is constant. His theory introduced no other new facts--it was just a different explanation of the Michelson-Morley experiment. ...Different than the FitzGerald-Lorentz theory that was based on the same facts. Einstein had no facts to prove the speed of light is constant--but he believed his theory was more elegant.

"...accepting an anti-science idea like "intelligent design" is just one more step on the road to America's total irrelevance in the arena of scientific achievement."
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater, however.
After the delightful experience of living with a gifted artist for the past 9 years, I've learned to moderate my previous convictions and strict thinking habits regarding the relationship between (and priorities of) science and art. Art and creativity are actually senior, in the overall scheme of things. --And some exceptional individuals actually ARE THEMSELVES a work of art in their beingness, their lifestyle, and their very personality, so I'm not necessarily talking of a painting or a sculpture or a book or the like.
Along the same lines, some exceptional scientists exist who treat their hobbies and professions as a work of art, and so by definition they too are artists, because others look at who they are and what they've done, and admire the nebulous 'art' quality that they see.
That said, if everyone posting on this thread supposes that everyone else is a strict scientist, then have at it, but I suspect that there are a few less-structured artist or philosopher type of minds posting here who have been having some accidental or deliberate fun with the more-structured scientist-types. It's apples and oranges.
I'm fond of George Burn's statement in the movie Oh God: "You think it's easy being God, YOU try making a fish!"
.

I agree with the first paragraph 100%.
And I agree that many if not most "ID activists" are just repackaging Creationism.
But we are a long way from understanding how humans evolved. Scientists should be most interested in determining the truth. In areas where our knowledge is incomplete, scientists should err on the side of open-mindedness.

Just saying I don't understand is hardly a scientific response.
You need to show that Einstein had facts to show that the speed of light is a constant before he created his theory--not that others found facts later.
His theory was based on the same facts as the FitzGerlad-Lorentz theory. And both worked out the math to make their competing theories logically consistent. So it wasn't just the math.

The other point is a response to the repeated charge that I don't understand what a scientific hypothesis is.
I've given two examples of great scientists who started with no facts or no new facts--just a flash of insight. According to the definitions I've heard here, it appears they also didn't know what a proper scientific hypothesis is.
However, if someone can show that Einstein's hypothesis that the speed of light is constant was based on some sort of evidence, then I am wrong.

Ok. Turn to page 816 of the text "Physics" (second edition, by Cutnell and Johnson), and read Chapter 28 -- "The Relativity of Time: Time Dilation." As you'll read, Einstein built his theory on postulates (not hypotheses). There were two postulates. "1) The Relativity Postulate. The laws of physics are the same in every inertial reference frame. 2) the Speed of Light Postulate. The speed of light in a vacuum, measured in any inertial reference frame, always has the same value of c, no matter how fast the source of light and the observer are moving relative to each other." The authors then explain each postulate. With respect to Postulate 2, the authors write: "This property of light, although surprising, has been verified many times by experiment."

You can't, because it was an assumption. Einstein developed one of the greatest theories in the history of science based on an idea that many others thought was crazy. And he had no experiments or observations to back it up. He just showed that starting with that assumption he could construct a logically consistent theory--but it was no more logically consistent than the FitzGerald-Lorentz theory.

Also worth quoting further from the Physics' text: (P. 817). The authors write:
Since waves, such as water waves and sound waves, require a medium through which to propagate, it was natural for scientists before Einstein to assume that light did too. This hypothetical medium was called the luminiferous ether and was assumed to fill all of space. Furthermore, it was believed that light traveled only at the speed c when measured with respect to the ether. According to this view, an observer moving relative to the ether would measure a speed for light that was slower or faster than c, depending on whether the observer moved with or against the light. During the years 1883-1887, however, the American scientists Al. A. Michelson and E. W. Morley carried out a series of famous experiments whose results were not consistent with the ether theory. Their results indicated that the speed of light is indeed the same in all inertial reference frames and does not depend on the motion of the observer relative to the source of the light. These experiments and others, led eventually to the demise of the ether theory and the acceptance of the theory of special relativity."

Uh, I just did. Why should I do it again. How many times do you want me to do it? He had good reason to believe that the speed of light has constant and I see no reason to prove it to you repeatedly. You could easily google it yourself. Why should I do it for you? I think I'm missing the point of the exercise here.

re: #716 J.S.
OK, what facts was his speed-of-light-is-constant "postulate" based on?
The fact that science can sometimes verify "surprising" ideas is exactly my point.
Science is based on deterministic principles. That means that if you can demonstrate something through an experiment it is a fact or law. Everything else is just provisional in the search for facts and laws.
ID is just a hypothesis. Evolution is a theory--it encompasses many indisputable facts. But a theory is an explanation. The number or quality of facts it encompasses don't in themselves make the explanation any more or less true.

Do you really think "he had good reason" is an acceptable answer?
I've been told here that a scientific hypothesis must be based on facts. What facts did Einstein have that suggested the speed of light is a constant?

In 1887, the physicists Albert Michelson and Edward Morley performed the influential Michelson-Morley experiment to measure the speed of light relative to the motion of the earth, the goal being to measure the velocity of the Earth through the aether. As shown in the diagram of a Michelson interferometer, a half-silvered mirror was used to split a beam of monochromatic light into two beams traveling at right angles to one another. After leaving the splitter, each beam was reflected back and forth between mirrors several times (the same number for each beam to give a long but equal path length; the actual Michelson-Morley experiment used more mirrors than shown) then recombined to produce a pattern of constructive and destructive interference. Any slight change in speed of light along each arm of the interferometer (because the apparatus was moving with the Earth through the proposed "aether") would change the amount of time that the beam spent in transit, which would then be observed as a change in the pattern of interference. In the event, the experiment gave a null result.
How many links do you require? I can do this all day.

The Michelson-Morley experiment failed to confirm the existence of ether. (It was supposed to show that the speed changed depending on direction in relation to the ether.)
It didn't prove that the speed of light is constant in different frames of reference.

The point of Einstein's theory was that if someone on earth and someone moving 100,000 miles/s in relation to earth measured the speed of the same light beam (traveling in the line of the moving user's motion), they would both still get the same answer.

Maybe in the everyday sense... it's the same in London as in Los Angeles.
But Einstein suggested the speed of light is always the same. If you are standing still and I am moving very fast we will still measure the same speed for the same light beam.
Surely you can see that some scientists thought Einstein was nuts. Surely if you are traveling 100,000 m/s towards a light beam you should measure a speed 100,000 m/s less than someone standing still.
In fact, one could have argued that Einstein's theory wasn't science. And many people did.

If you take two sets of Michelson-Morley experimental equipment and move them rapidly wrt to each other while sharing the same light source, they both will measure the speed of light as the same constant; albeit the clocks on the wall next to them will show a difference in time.

Experiments firing ONE PHOTON, at the speed of light, through TWO slots and recording its position found that any photon fired through two slots went to exactly and only the two-slot targets, which do NOT overlap the ONE slot target.
Which raised the question: travelling at the speed of light, how does ONE PHOTON know whether to go to the One-Slot target or the Two-Slot target?

Just for the record, you never explained why the above is wrong because it isn't wrong.
Einstein's theory showed that space, time, energy and matter (remember E = m * c squared?) are all relative while the speed of light is constant. What else is there in the physical universe besides these entities?
Einstein was a creative thinker whose insight led to a more elegant theory. Einstein never did empirical research. By the National Academy of Science's rigid views of "the scientific method," Einstein wasn't a scientist. (In fact, he wasn't recognized as scientist when he submitted his first important paper, either.)
