Hope, Change, and Che Guevara

Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 8:50:34 am PDT

Remember that Che Guevara flag in Barack Obama’s Houston campaign office? The one that all the Obama supporters came out and decried as a fluke, and totally unrepresentative of the campaign, and just one person’s opinion?

Well, here’s an Ohio judge with an attraction to mass murderers and Communist thugs—and Barack Obama.

And as we’ve been pointing out all week, you can find blogs all over the official Obama web site that support Communists, terrorists, and 9/11 Troofers.

Still just a “fluke?”

(Hat tip: Power Line.)

A judge in Ohio says the state's method of putting prisoners to death is unconstitutional because two of three drugs used in the lethal injection process can cause pain.

That's funny, your hero Che wasn't too particular about whether his execution methods caused pain.

14 The Other Les  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 8:53:44am

It really is disheartening to see so many people either have no clue to Che's murderous background, or even worse - don't care once they find out.

And this seems to be a problem confined to the Left. They've actively engaged in spreading the Che chic, and it is no surprise that Obama supporters who have posters of Obama striking poses straight from the Communist playbook, have Che posters as well.

I don't see the Che lithograph so much as the face of mass-murdering terrorism but more as the face of sell-out pseudo-punkism. It's the mass-produced face of the hip, "rebel" youth who are all about "non-conformity," and that is revealing in their ultra-conformist habits.

Al-Sadr: New force to fight U.S. in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr is establishing a new fighting force to battle U.S.-led troops in Iraq, he said in a letter read in Iraqi mosques Friday.

Muqtada al-Sadr says his new group will focus exclusively on battling U.S.-led forces in Iraq.

Al-Sadr's letter said that "the resistance will be exclusively conducted by only one group. This new group will be defined soon by me."

Al-Sadr's militia, the Mehdi Army, has a strong and ubiquitous presence in Shiite cities, towns and neighborhoods.

Sources familiar with al-Sadr said they believe he's trying to embrace other militants, especially what the U.S. calls Iranian-backed "Special Groups" that have flouted a cease-fire the cleric declared in August.

The mainstream Mehdi Army has operated under the cease-fire, which dramatically reduced violence in Iraq. During that time, however, there has been fighting between U.S. and Iraqi troops and members of the Mehdi Army, with many of the battles this spring in the southern city of Basra and Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood.

Political statements are outlawed from public employees and officials on public property - or in the case of the feds, on any day for which the individual receives payment from the government. (So if you work at the Post Office on Friday you cannot go campaign on Friday for anyone.) Nor can you make a political statement while wearing an official uniform.

Who would be able to get this cretin?

New Kind of Judge

ELYRIA -- It has taken fewer than nine months on the bench for Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge to define himself as a jurist who marches to the beat of his own drum and to become a lightning rod for controversy.

Burge, who sports a slicked-back silver hairstyle and is often seen with an unlit cigar lodged in the corner of his mouth, said he promised while campaigning for judge to never make a decision based on how it would read in the newspaper. But naturally, Burge who dons reading glasses when he puts on the judge's robe and takes the bench, said he sometimes thinks of how the public may react to some decisions.

''The thought enters my mind, certainly,'' he said. ''It just doesn't weigh in the decision. Everyone would like to be liked and popular. I always base my decisions on what I think is right.''

Burge, who spent decades practicing as a criminal defense attorney before he was elected in November, acknowledged that he has made decisions that some people vehemently disagree with and others praise.

He keeps a picture of a convicted murderer on his wall.

On controversial issues like the death penalty or parental discipline most people do not have neutral views, said Burge. Earlier this year, Burge urged his former client, James Filiaggi, an Elyria man put to death in February for shooting and killing his ex-wife at point blank range in 1994, to fight for his life in court before the execution took place.

Burge keeps a photograph of Filiaggi, perhaps his most notorious client, on the wall next to his desk in his Justice Center office. He said in court during a hearing on the lethal injection challenge in July that condemned prisoners should be allowed to die peacefully.

Those on the right have not allowed the KKK to support us, after all the KKK was always a Democratic Party operation. The left, however, hangs Che posters next to Obama. Judge Burge sued by attorney general for exceeding jurisdiction

ELYRIA -- The Ohio attorney general has sued Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge James Burge claiming he is exceeding his authority. The Attorney General's Office wants the Ohio Supreme Court to stop Burge from holding a hearing where capital murder defendant Ruben Rivera can argue that Ohio's lethal injection process for executions is unconstitutional, before Rivera is even tried.

Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann's office on Wednesday filed a writ of prohibition with the Ohio Supreme Court to stop Burge. Burge has 21 days from yesterday to respond, said Chris Davey, Ohio Supreme Court spokesman.

Burge earlier this year appointed American Civil Liberties Union attorney Jeffrey Gamso to represent Rivera, of Cleveland, to argue that Ohio's lethal injection protocol constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. The state attorney general is also challenging Burge's appointment of Gamso.

He was sued by Marc Dann, of all people. If you'll recall State Atty General Dann left office recently under a sexual harassment scandal.

Take a gander at the number of foreclosures/preforclosures/bank-owned homes in the county especially the cities of Lorain and Elyria. The last Ford plant closed in Lorain in Jan. '07. The Ford plant was in the city of Lorain (not Elyria) and has gone the way of the dinosaur. Elyria is the county seat of Lorain County and a manufacturing town as well, but not home to a Ford plant, present or past.

"Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a Kentucky case that lethal injection doesn’t violate the U.S. Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

But Burge said Ohio’s lethal injection protocols violate due process requirements in the Constitution because the same state law that authorizes lethal injection also requires that executions be done “quickly and painlessly.”

During hearings earlier this year, two anesthesiologists testified that the current lethal injection process used in Ohio — if properly administered — would be quick and painless.

But defense expert Mark Heath said that there was no way to guarantee something wouldn’t go wrong and leave the inmate conscious but paralyzed and suffering horribly as he dies.

Burge wrote that it was impossible for the members of the execution team to determine whether an inmate had received enough of the sedative to render him comatose before the other drugs are administered.

That risk of something going wrong, Burge concluded, was high enough to violate an inmate’s right under Ohio law “to an execution without pain, and to an expectancy that his execution will be painless.”

Both Heath and the state’s expert, Mark Dershwitz, said the dose of the sedative administered in the process would be enough to kill a human being without the aid of the other two drugs.

Win, loss or draw?

Jeff Gamso, an attorney for Rivera and McCloud, called Burge’s ruling a victory, although he would have preferred that Burge had taken death off the table as a possible sentence for his clients."

263 Lucius Septimius  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 9:33:32am

re: #197 buzzsawmonkey

The thing to remember is that it is the very fact that people are insulated from the reality of what people like Che are and do that causes them to gravitate to him.

Most people live in a very insulated, very comfortable world. They recognize, dimly, that their wealth and comfort insulate them from the rough, gritty edge of life--and, while they wouldn't have it any other way, they long still to be in touch with something genuine. The reason things sold today as "handmade" look roughhewn is that people want to have something that looks "real"--never mind that true artistry conceals the traces of the worker's hand.

That's where Che and his ilk come in. Che was "real"--he actually killed people with an abandon most people, thankfully, only can dream of when playing a videogame. That is the source of his appeal; he is a phony icon of the "real," as much as the faux-antique Pottery Barn chest of drawers with the marks of an adze still painfully apparent.

Too true -- fashion is the best way of thinking of this (high waist or no).

I knew a woman once -- a middle-aged very wealthy divorcee who decided to come back to college -- who was bragging about having purchased the complete works of Che. She affected patchouli and "youth" clothes all in an effort to proclaim her coolness (the 19-20 year-olds found it a little creepy, as well they should). Personally, my reaction was to think that she'd be the first up against the wall when the revolution came. So why the attachment?

Part of it is fashion -- the desire to appear "committed" to political "progress," something which since the 60s has been identified with left wing and revolutionary politics -- Khrushchev's "wars of national liberation." Che fits the mold perfectly. And it's convenient that they know nothing about him other than the image. And even if they do, they can easily rationalize away the killings or present them as lies or otherwise avoid the truth. In the end, it is solipsism that drives this -- the desire to appear "committed," which as we all know was the political tender of the "radical." Nevermind what you're committed to, so long as it carries the right label.

And, in the end, just as in fashion, the label is everything. The label says "people's" and "liberation" and "struggle" and all those nice radical platitudes that self-righteous self-loathing haute bourgeois posers want to identify with, so that they can rationalize away their wealth and social climbing because, in their "heart," their "interior self" they remain "committed" to the cause.

"Columbus - A Lorain County judge, once the attorney for a death row inmate, can decide whether Ohio's lethal injection process is legal before starting a man's murder trial, the Ohio Supreme Court has ruled.

Never has an Ohio trial judge agreed to consider the constitutionality of lethal injection before a capital punishment trial has even started.

But that is exactly what Common Pleas Judge James Burge did, drawing the wrath of the state attorney general, who said that Burge - in his first year on the bench - was far overstepping his authority.

Attorney General Marc Dann told the Supreme Court in written filings that Burge was taking on a role reserved for federal court judges. The Supreme Court, however, disagreed without further comment in a 5-2 opinion on Wednesday.

The ruling means the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will have to comply with Burge's request to reveal in detail one of the prison system's most protected secrets: exactly how it goes about executing an inmate."

I suppose I should take this opportunity to apologize to the nation once again for foisting Dennis Kucinich upon you.

Oh, and for the person who asked earlier, yes, those posters do hang in his office. The Che poster has famously been there for years. The Soviet-styled Obama poster must be a recent addition, and it does strike me as an FEC violation.

Sorry I guess I should have defined scary.

NE Ohio "scary" is purely an economic one. Heavy union, miles and miles of lakefront/waterfront property sitting vacant/useless because it's owned by Ford or a railroad company. Never happen in IL or FL.

Not one fucking exact change toll both on the turnpike. Every toll both manned/womaned by a smiling Teamster making at least $23/hour.

High taxes, old economy.

I understand. The OP was misleading. It seemed to be winking the following "see, Obama likes Che." He may, but this doesn't show that. And while Obama's blogs are under his control this judge's walls aren't. It is an extreme stretch on an apparently slow news day. It also reinforces a common (and wrong) belief about this blog: LFG will post anything to make its ideological points. I look for a higher standard when dealing with such associations. Some judge in who-cares-where having a che poster tells me nothing about the national race for president, and nothing more than I already know about liberal judges.

I do think its interesting that Charles has becomes Obama's best friend, lately. I hope he is getting a hefty consulting fee for helping Obama make his site politically correct.

re: #186 MandyManners

Commentary:
A. Maintaining the prestige of judicial office is essential to a system of government in which the judiciary functions independently of the executive and legislative branches. Respect for the judicial office facilitates the orderly conduct of legitimate judicial functions. Judges should distinguish between proper and improper use of the prestige of office in all of their activities. For example, it would be improper for a judge to allude to his or her judgeship to gain a personal advantage such as deferential treatment when stopped by a police officer for a traffic offense. Similarly, judicial letterhead must not be used for conducting a judge's personal business.
A judge must avoid lending the prestige of judicial office for the advancement of the private interests of others. For example, a judge must not use the judge's judicial position to gain advantage in a civil suit involving a member of the judge's family. In contracts for publication of a judge's writings, a judge should retain control over the advertising to avoid exploitation of the judge's office. As to the acceptance of awards, see Canon 2(C)(5)(a) and Commentary.

------

The placement of a campaign poster for a political candidate is a violation of the "lending prestige for the advancement" clause imo. But I have no standing in that district so I personally cannot file anything. from the judgcond.pdf at /Rules/conduct/judcond.pdf at that site.

During Hillary's run, I actually voted for her because of the information Charles has posted here (I usually do NOT vote democrat but Obama scares the bejeezers out of me). I'm glad he does this to show Obama's real support base i.e. the marxists, hard-core environmentalists (ELF & Greenpeace), and other leftists and progressives. All this shows the Democratic Party has been hijacked and is NOT the old Democratic Party we knew during the earlier days. Obama has not shown the general public what he actually has in store if he's elected nor actual plans how he wants to correct this country's problems. Yet people flock to him like he is a prophet (my wife calls him the Antichrist).

God help the USA.

I've never understood the left's attraction to Che, who has to be the least effective 'revolutionary' in history. I mean, it's an American tradition to root for an underdog, and I can understand the attraction to symbols of the people rebelling against a corrupt regime and all. It's not that.

Couldn't they at least pick an example that accomplished something worthwhile? What did Che accomplish? Nothing to deserve the recognition he gets. . .that's for sure. Killed a few people, got himself killed. . .might as well wear a picture of the clock tower sniper.

If the same team that is running Obama's site ran the McCain site, yeah I think they would be up there for a good long time. I think Charles has already made that point: they are rank amateurs when it comes to the blogosphere and web security.

Assigning darker motives and thought crimes to the Obama web moderators will have to wait.

Look, people in this guy's district should be outraged and take action. Hell, report it to Bill O'Reily's producers. This is the kind of thing they love, and that will get the poster removed, if that is what you really want.

There are so many things we can say about Obama, this one is so minor as to be a distraction. Because of this, if this gets legs it will actually help Obama get elected by marginalizing his best critics: us.

Remember that band that played at his big shindig in Oregon right before that primary? (Yes he did advertise them -seen an invite. They listed them by individual name instead of the band name.) And we’ll rally ’round the flag, Dems, we’ll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry “Guevara!”

We are springing to the call of our comrades gone before,
Shouting the battle cry “Guevara!”
And we’ll fill our vacant ranks with a million murderers more,
Shouting the battle cry “Guevara!”

“Guevara Forever!” Hurrah, Dems, Hurrah!

And we’ll rally ’round the flag, Dems, we’ll rally once again,
Shouting the battle cry “Guevara!”

We will welcome to our numbers the men who fill mass graves,
Shouting the battle cry “Guevara!”
And in our America, every man shall be a slave,
Shouting the battle cry “Guevara!”

“Guevara Forever!” Hurrah, Dems, Hurrah!

Unbelievable. Obama's supporters fancy him as some kind of communist dictator in the mold of Stalin, Lenin or Mao.

I wonder why.

I've never understood the whole "portrait of a politician" thing that communists are into. But then, I've never understood the cult of personality either.

re: #50 Shug

Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks like Don Cherry ?

I think it's safe to assume that Grapes doesn't have a Che poster in his office. Or an Obama poster.

Seriously, I believe it is highly unprofessional for a judge to have partisan political posters in his office. even if he is an elected judge who ran as a Democrat. Once elected he is supposed to serve all the people, impartially.

Oh I don't know about that numbers posting bit. His area code isn't 666 so there cannot be too much to fear. I am sure the judge feels that he has good reasons to decorate his office as he chooses. Perhaps he even has strong feelings about it, in the same way that Che was dedicated to what he did best. There were bunches of judges like this guy in Germany between 1933 and 1945 so whats to be concerned about? ////

368 Kalak  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 12:18:26pm

When did that poster of Obama come out?

I'd expect it to say "OBEY" across the bottom. That's a freaking Communist Leader poster.

Hey, Dainn? We're not all guys or boys here.

re: #363 Son Of The Godfather

I don't much care whether these people are ignorant of history or sympathetic to merciless regimes... both excuses lead to the same danger for America.

That "Che" has become a mainstreamed icon of "resistance" tells us much about these individuals... Mostly, that I'd like to wrap the icon around a steel-tipped boot and deliver it forceably to that place they talk out of.

This sh*t needs to stop.

I completely agree. Wearing Che goes hand-in-hand with wearing "scarf that have no other meaning." Imagine if Hitler or Stalin was so fashionable. It's the same idea.

Want a good idea how deep the Che thing is? Go to a carnival arcade and find the stall that has all the cheap framed posters as prizes. Next to the obligatory pot leaf graphic and the scarface snapshot you will always find that poster of Che. Makes me think maybe our judge can throw darts at balloons.

I really wonder how many kids that have that image on the wall have half a clue who he was and what he is responsible for?

I think, it must appeal to people that can't or won't think for themselves. They need this "father" figure to take care of them. "Father of the people" tag was how communist dictators were mostly promoted. So it's not surprising that Obama appeals to young and intellectually lazy, i.e. the bulk of MSM.

Meant to ding you down, suspected troll.

Obviously I missed my mark. Any of you lizards want to rectify my fat finger blunder?

Yes I did. It's the quintessential pinko-wear. This a**hole has no business on a judges bench.

375 Charles  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 1:28:46pm

What a pathetic troll.

376 Charles  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 1:30:53pm

Is there some kind of troll school where idiots go to learn this stuff? Because without exception, they all follow the exact same script.

377 Charles  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 1:36:36pm

1. Post an insult.

2. Claim to be a Republican/LGF supporter who is sad to see our credibility being diminished.

3. Post more insults.

4. Whine about the insults that come back and ignore any substantive points.

Rinse. Repeat.

How do i prove that I am not a troll?

"Are you or have you ever been a troll on LGF" said McCarthy.

I feel thoroughly spanked. :) I am kind of amused that you all think I am a troll based on my opinion here and my low post count. I guess I should be flattered in some strange way. No, I'm just a frequent reader and infrequent poster (point 2 again I guess)

I only post when I have something to say, and on this site that seems to be when it is against the general group opinion. If that makes me a troll, whatever.

Tell me what I said that was insulting. If I made an insult, I'll apologize; that was not my intent.

Question: is a troll anyone who disagrees? Did I disagree too harshly? Did I insult anyone? You tell me. I am kind of surprised by this response, but I guess that is am just too much of a newbie here to understand what acceptable LGF discourse should be.

I sent Charles an email about this and won't post in this thread anymore...

381 bubbasbbq  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 2:12:40pm

I hope it has been mentioned bfore but that poster of barry hussein loks ALOT like a shot of Lenin. In fact B. Hussein even looks a little like that thug, sans beard.

Sorry, I don't feel playing the "show me where I insulted you" game. You can find it yourself - it's right there.

And the only points you've made are missed points. How many associates and followers of Barack Obama have to be outed as hard-leftists and Communist sympathizers before you'll admit there might be a problem?

re: #262 Dainn

I have military dioramas of WW2 German tanks in my house; does that make me a Nazi?

Maybe. You tell me.

384 dainn  Fri, Jun 13, 2008 2:33:12pm

I don't think you can impune Obama by those that who support him. We obviously disagree on that. Apparently most of the posters here do to.

I'll keep saying what I think until you ban me. All I ask is that you read what all I have written here before you decide to take my account away. If you really think I am a troll, you should cancel my account. If you just don't like my opinion, then I hope we (and all) can agree to disagree and move on.

Gotta love the internet: high drama-per-second here.

In Ohio, judges are elected. However, they are prohibited from engaging in "inappropriate political activity," which both posters hanging on the wall, AND the topic of the interview, would fall under.

[Link: www.ohiochamber.com...]

If you want to report him, report him to the Ohio elections committee for electioneering, or the Ohio state bar / judicial ethics committee of the state bar.

Here's the really annoying thing: the US Supreme Court just ruled on this EXACT issue and held that lethal injection was NOT cruel and unusual punishment. Ergo, what Judge Purple Tie thinks is completely irrelevant. I suppose he must be looking to establish a brand new civil right under the Ohio Constitution, rather than a federal civil right, but sheesh! Let the Ohio voters decide!

And one more thing, a friend of mine who is a surgeon tells me that humans getting lethal injection have it better than dogs at the pound, as far this being a humane method of being "put to sleep." Apparently humans get an extra "sleepy time" drug that dogs do not.

(Having read some of the death penalty appeal cases, and seen from the court's recitation of the facts of the cases what horrible, horrible people live amongst us, I'm all for the captive bolt to the brain - which is how horses are slaughtered in slaughterhouses).

Marxism has really dug in deep in the Midwest. All the power of the Left and radical Islam seems to be centered there. What is it about this region that attracts this element and allows them to take power?

Not deliberately. Dainn has been my bbs/internet handle since the 1200baud days.

Both "Dainn" and "dainn" are me. If you click on the little icon for each you get the same info and ID number.

I guess when I login with dainn it shows the lower-case. /shrug

The migration of kooks - including neo-Nazis and white supremacists - to Obama's campaign is sad news because it means Leading Presidential Contender Ron Paul is bleeding supporters.
