Does Google hate America?

No. “Hate” is such a negative word.

They just don’t care.

It's not what you're celebrating, it's what you're NOT celebrating that pisses us off. Nice try to make it seem like it's coming from everywhere, right and left. But a flag ain't that hard, unless you've got something against it.

Yes, today is Flag Day...but it is also the birthday of the United States Army, which was formed in 1775. I actually typed in the Google address today to see Google not mention anything. I really don't care much about Google. They are a bunch of burned out hippies anyway. I assume the founders will die in a bizarre ecstasy related death at Burning Man anyway. And nobody will commemorate their birthdays.

30 Bob in Breckenridge  Sat, Jun 14, 2008 7:24:55pm

Does google hate America?
No Flag day logo and no Memorial Day logo. Pathetic Veterans Day logo. Yet logos for Iran, Spanish painters, earth day, etc. What's in store for the 4th of July? A tribute to Gen. Cornwallis?
Google and the U.N. both should be forced to find a new home.

Patriotism is tough for lefties.

Patriotism requires one to recognize somethings are bigger than "me." Patriotism says to the individual we make certain sacrifices voluntarily for the sake of our fellow citizens and in the name of duty. This in recognition of what the nation affords us.

Lefties have a trouble get past, what does it all do for "me."

44 NJDhockeyfan  Sat, Jun 14, 2008 7:32:35pm

Someone pointed this out the other day.

If you search for 'Jew' in Google, the first thing that comes up is a link to this:

If you recently used Google to search for the word "Jew," you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google. We'd like to explain why you're seeing these results when you conduct this search.

A site's ranking in Google's search results relies heavily on computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page's relevance to a given query. Sometimes subtleties of language cause anomalies to appear that cannot be predicted. A search for "Jew" brings up one such unexpected result.

If you use Google to search for "Judaism," "Jewish" or "Jewish people," the results are informative and relevant. So why is a search for "Jew" different? One reason is that the word "Jew" is often used in an anti-Semitic context. Jewish organizations are more likely to use the word "Jewish" when talking about members of their faith. The word has become somewhat charged linguistically, as noted on websites devoted to Jewish topics such as these:

* [Link: shakti.trincoll.edu...]
* [Link: www.jewishworldreview.com...]

Someone searching for information on Jewish people would be more likely to enter terms like "Judaism," "Jewish people," or "Jews" than the single word "Jew." In fact, prior to this incident, the word "Jew" only appeared about once in every 10 million search queries. Now it's likely that the great majority of searches on Google for "Jew" are by people who have heard about this issue and want to see the results for themselves.

The beliefs and preferences of those who work at Google, as well as the opinions of the general public, do not determine or impact our search results. Individual citizens and public interest groups do periodically urge us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results. Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the comprehensiveness of our search results as an extremely important priority. Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it. We will, however, remove pages from our results if we believe the page (or its site) violates our Webmaster Guidelines, if we believe we are required to do so by law, or at the request of the webmaster who is responsible for the page.

We apologize for the upsetting nature of the experience you had using Google and appreciate your taking the time to inform us about it.

Sincerely,
The Google Team

45 pegcity  Sat, Jun 14, 2008 7:33:10pm
It seems obvious what Google is trying to do. They are trying to lavish attention on days that they feel are important, or people's birthdays who they feel made an important contribution to the culture at large, but which are typically ignored. Memorial Day is not typically ignored. It is a national holiday. There are parades galore. Memorial Day does not need Google's attention for people to know it exists. The same cannot be said of Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday, or the anniversary of the invention of the laser.

How can you debate people this insane?

I posted this in the last thread, but it fits better here- please excuse the repetition:

Today is Flag Day in the United States. It is also the 40th anniversary of my grandfather's death. Son of German immigrants he served as an officer in the US Army in World War I and came home to raise four children. A voracious reader he was a devoted student of American history as well as a publisher, a public servant, and a patriot who inspired gratitude and respect for all the blessings of liberty that are signified by the flag of the United States of America. He passed that patriotism on to his son who fought in the US Navy in World War II and to his grandson who has never worn a uniform but who serves his country nonetheless. It is fitting that this man who was so proud of our flag and who fostered such respect for it should have been called home on Flag Day.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen

Lefties never stop their adolescent rebellion against their parents.

The inimitable P.J. O'Rourke summed it up quite well (in his introduction to Give War A Chance):

The liberal is continually angry, as only a self-important man can be, with his civilization, his culture, his country and his folks back home. His is an infantile world view. At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child -- miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is the philosophy of spoiled brats.

The event is not one big orgy, nor one huge drug fest. For the most part, people drink plenty of water, socialize and gawk. Granted, camping in the high desert does come with its own challenges, but if you're into camping and roughing it, and want to experience something new, give it a shot.

/It's just that "other people" (translate Mom and Dad/Government) need to pay for it.

WOW! That's enlightening! (at least to me). I think you have hit upon a very key point here to how the left-wing's minds work and were shaped. All of their lives, Mom and Dad paid for it -- whatever "it" happened to be: a new bike, that new radio, baseball cards, soccer, the trips to camp, first car, college, help with the first house. All of their lives, "Mom and Dad" took care of things -- often with little to no input from themselves. Now that they are all growed up, they see other things that need to be done, things that Mom and Dad just don't have the resources to accomplish (they know, they've asked Mom & Dad). So, enter the Government -- the "big" Mom & Dad -- Government can solve the problems Mom & Dad can't solve. As a corollary, of course these darlings shouldn't be expected to do more than they have already done by pointing out the problems and organizing people to get Government to fix it -- that's for the big people -- the evil rich, who, just like Mom and Dad, only dole out little bits and pieces of their wealth. The left-wingers know they deserve more -- so they can use the Government to get the "more" they so desperately desire. The "more" that Mom & Dad can't or wouldn't provide.

5.Three mysteries continue to surround this incident giving rise to interesting speculation in the global community of terrorism analysts. First, what happened to Madad Khan, the owner of the house attacked? Many members of his family were reportedly killed, but there is so far no confimed information regarding his fate. There has been speculation in the tribal belt of Pakistan that he must have been the man who tipped off the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) about the expected presence of Abu Laith in his house and that is how he escaped the missile attack of which he must have been aware..

6. The second mystery surrounds the fate of Adam Gadahn.According to Pakistani sources, he was also expected in the house along with Abu Laith. Did he come? If so, was he among those killed? If not, did he not keep his appointment with Abu Laith? If he had absented himself, did he also play a role in facilitating the missile strike? Did he know in advance about the impending strike and thus escape? Was he a mole of the CIA in Al Qaeda? Did he know that Madad Khan was also in touch with the CIA? Or were the two working independently of each other?

7. According to some sources in the tribal areas, Gadahn was not a mole of the CIA. He was present in the house of Madad Khan along with Abu Laith, but survived the missile attack with minor injuries. He was picked up by the Americans and flown to Morocco, where he is being interrogated by the US intelligence. It is also claimed by these sources that the US has not admitted this lest US legal rights experts raise the matter in US courts.

8. The third mystery surrounds the absence of Gadahn's translations in American English from the propaganda pieces produced by As-Sahab since the missile attack. He used to translate the messages of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri and provide English sub-titles. Since the missile attack, either the English sub-titles are missing or when they are given they are of a different quality----either Pakistani or Arab English and not American English.

9.Is Gadahn alive or dead? If alive, where is he? If dead, why Al Qaeda has not admitted his death as it admitted the death of Abu Laith? Why the CIA, whose Director Lt.Gen.Michael Hyden claimed credit for the death of Abu Laith in a recent interview with the "Washington Post" remained silent on Gadahn?

It seems to me that, considering the heat they have been taking on the subject, it would be very easy to cool that off by simply putting the American flag on the logo. Simple and easy. The fact that they are seemingly refusing to do so is telling. It’s not about randomness. It’s not about patriotism. It’s about defiance and petulance.

It seems to me that they are intentionally sending a message to conservatives whom have complained about this: you can’t push us around and tell us what to do. They’re right. We can’t make them do so, but we can stop using their site. Regardless of the quality of your product, if you are petulant and defiant in the face of your current and potential customers, you will lose them. It just makes no business sense to me.

Yeah, he's really dressed for doing that for an extended period of time, isn't he? They did give him some nice new gloves though. Pure pandering photo-op. I'll bet there's no follow-up pictures after he spent 20 minutes doing that. Those nice shiny office clothes would look pretty begraggled after more than a few minutes of that kind of work.

/Nope, I wear those kind of clothes now too, 15 minutes would probably kill me right now. However, before I finished college, I lived and worked on a farm -- we knew how to use a shovel and the kinds of clothes to wear for that kind of work.

This is worth posting again:

..."This is a disaster that nobody ever predicted. Not even on Wednesday did we have warning that it would be this bad. Nobody thought this was even possible. In New Orleans, the people had known for decades they were living on borrowed time. They were living below sea level, near a hurricane prone coast and dependent on pumps. They knew the day of reckoning would come. Nobody - not a single person - dreamed that a flood of this magnitude was possible. New Orleans had warning; Cedar Rapids had none.

That isn’t the only difference. In Cedar Rapids, there has been no looting. The skywalk system from which I took many of these photos was unguarded until about noon Friday. Hundreds of offices were unprotected and easily pillaged. I so no sign of looting of any kind. This community has come together. Farmers are in town with pumps and tractors, neighbors are sharing generators and freezers. Local hospitals are providing free tetanus shots. On Thursday when a local television station asked for volunteers to help sandbag a threatened well, so many showed up that 30 minutes later the same station had to ask people to not come. There was more than could be used. Unlike in New Orleans, nobody that I know of expected George Bush to show up and give them a drink of water 24 hours after the water rose. This community will definitely need help, but the people understand that they have a responsibility to help themselves first.

I have never been more proud to be an Iowan."

I have a hard time with this one. I hate Google and what it's administrators stand for. Still, their product - produced in an entrepreneurial, capitalist spirit - can not be matched by anyone else currently in the market. From Gmail, to Google Calendar, to Google Documents, to Google Image Search, I have not come across any other search engine that provides so many practical, useful services. And, they are systematically buying out their competitors.

So, how do you, as a capitalist, stand up to an organization that provides so many useful resources to capitalists, yet acts in so many ways that fly in the face of the very notion of capitalism? I certainly don't know. What I do know is that I wanted to throw my fist to the screen when I came upon Google's black screen on "Earth day." F**king socialist scum.

There were a few positive stories from the New Orleans flooding, but too few.

"Eighteen-year-old Jabbor Gibson jumped aboard the bus as it sat abandoned on a street in New Orleans and took control. "I just took the bus and drove all the way here...seven hours straight,' Gibson admitted. "I hadn't ever drove a bus." The teen packed it full of complete strangers and drove to Houston. He beat thousands of evacuees slated to arrive there.
Authorities eventually allowed the renegade passengers inside the dome. But the 18-year-old who ensured their safety could find himself in a world of trouble for stealing the school bus.
"I don't care if I get blamed for it," Gibson said, "as long as I saved my people."

Monkey doll named for Obama called racist

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah company offering online a sock monkey named for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says it didn't mean to anger anyone with a "cute and cuddly" toy that some are calling racist.

"We simply made a casual and affectionate observation one night, and a charming association between a candidate and a toy we had when we were little," according to a statement issued Saturday by Sock Obama LLC.

Jeanetta Williams, president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, called the toy "pure racism at its extreme."

Do they play mind games because they're liberals, or because they're sleazy entertainment promoters or flaky artistes?

I know what you mean about the seemingly universal leftist thinking among such people, but it isn't really thinking at all, when you get down to it. I spend a lot of my time among creative folks of all kinds, and rarely see a genuine ideologue -- left, right or otherwise. Most are "liberals" because either: a) they're not smart enough to figure things out for themselves, and default to the most popular position in that scene; b) parrot the prevailing ethos in order to "fit in"; or c) cynically use "issues" to advance their own careers. Not that those categories are mutually exclusive, mind you....

NYC on 9/11 showed the same kind of cooperative feeling (and we weren't even sure that after the two towers went down that there wouldln't be any more attacks!).
Thanks for that telling us about Iowa and those fine, unfortunate people.

I hate when they call these people 'liberals'. There's nothing liberal about the left. They're socialist totalitarians.

Constantly redefining words so they present a more enticing ideology. And the idiots who buy it! It really ticks me off. Grrrr.

Re that, I wonder how much of the logo issue is driven by The Hipness Factor, which often rivals the profit motive as the main concern in the Web biz. Commemorating exotic holidays and obscure anniversaries is Hip in that world. Giving tribute to Memorial Day and similar events most definitelyisn't. Even the Google motto -- "Don't be evil" -- reeks of snarky hipster irony.

You reminded me of those Apple commercials (hip dude vs. nerd).

She's from Lake Jackson, the home city for Ron Paul's House seat. Ironically, there he was, on the stage, applauding her.

"An American convoy near Jani Khel, Paktya, struck an IED and came under small-arms fire from insurgent positions 100 yards away. Army Pfc. Monica Brown ran forward through small-arms fire toward the burning vehicle to render aid to fellow Paratroopers. After she moved the casualties to a dry creek bed next to the burning vehicle, the convoy came under insurgent mortar attack. Brown placed her body over the wounded to shield them from mortar fire landing less than 100 yards away. At this point, the ammunition in the burning vehicle began to explode, again she shielded the casualties with her own body as chunks of shrapnel flew from the burning vehicle. After moving the wounded a second time, she continued treatment and again used her body to protect them from enemy small-arms fire.

Brown’s bravery, unselfish actions and medical aid rendered under fire saved the lives of her comrades and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat!"

Hey Mich! How are you doing tonight my friend?
I was mostly a rhythm guitar player and sometimes harmony singer (I have no fucking idea why I can't sing solo, but can sing harmony) but it was the really beginning days of Rock - Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and later on (in second band) some Rick Nelson and all. Hell if you knew 3 chords and could keep time, you had rhythm guitar down cold and if you knew five you were on the verge of being a guitar virtuoso in those days!
Funny thing was our lead guitarist really could play some leads like the great James Burton (always played lead on Nelson's big songs) - he was great but then just stopped playing one day.
Me too, but I stopped the day after I saw Cream live for the first time!

BELL: First off, they work in comic terms. They are easier to draw than people, and you don't have to worry about convincing expressions. I introduced penguins into my strip "If ..." during the Falklands war and got an unusually strong response from readers. I received lots of letters asking me to bring back the penguins. Recently I've been drawing George Bush as a chimp. After all, he does look like a chimp. But I depict him as a quite dangerous chimp. I don't make him cute and loveable. If someone looks like a monkey, why not make the most of it?

I think you do yourself a serious discredit. Guys like Charles and Eric, and excuse my obvious arrogance even myself are actually quite far and few between. But to think that guys like you dont make an enormous contribution is, well just plain wrong. It's the guys in the local bands playing in the local watering holes who genuinely keep the music alive. You can go to a local pub and hear live music almost any day of the week, what you really honestly cannot do is listen to Charles or Eric or me exclusively every night. Hmmm, cant say I can relate to that. Not..................... I hear stuff in my head all the time that I have trouble getting to come out. I worked my ass off to play the way I do, not one single note came easy. And yea, I have had the exact same affect on other guitarists that Eric and Charles had on you, the only difference being that I had the opportunity to talk to them and explain that despite the difference in our abilities they should not quit doing something that they loved just because it seemed so much easier for me or because I seem so much better at it than they thought they could ever be.

I practiced ten hours a day seven days a week for the first 10 years that I played guitar, and considering that I really am a pretty crappy guitar player. It really is amazing what constant practice and a good teacher will do to your playing.

How in the hell does someone not know the derogatory nature of monkeys in reference to black people?

its due in part to Americans doing such a good job of leaving racism behind, without even smirking racial dirty jokes after hours with the guys, Cyan...

Think about it: Americans of all races have grown up today in a context of no racial slurs, no public racism, no institutional racism and little private racism.

The 'monkey' thing is ignorant, yes, but common today BECAUSE of the revisionist 'cleansing' of the racist movies, plays and books that could reference baseline or previously-widespread reality...
