In so many words, yeah. I have yet to see one of the ID threads that doesn't devolve into a debate about God, rather than the specific topic at hand. Today the topic was Jindal, and his tap dance routine around the question. However, there were very few comments about Jindal in particular, or how politicians ought to handle such questions, or what it means for McCain.
Rather, people continue to discuss the topics of "theory" and "Darwinism", cheap shots about climate change, or why Charles (allegedly) is picking on religious people.

Night all!
A society will remain as free or as enslaved as the conscious dispositions of individuals determine it shall be. Just as the roots of oppression are found in passivity, the foundations of our liberty reside in highly energized and focused minds that insist upon their independence. There are no shortcuts, no structures or doctrines that can be erected, no hallowed documents to be revered, to save us the effort of continually challenging those who would presume to exercise authority over our lives.

Tech Q:
I'm struggling with my new blog in ways I could not have imagined a month ago.
I still have 2,500 bookmarks. Despite trying for a few weeks, I have been unable to organize my bookmarks so that I can figure out which to delete. I cannot save the links that I find scattered throughout my bookmarks a second time with another name 'cause it pushes the numbers over the limit. (Am I making sense?)
Would it be a good idea to save them with a Word document (Vista) and then C/P them onto a new bookmark list in another account with my ISP?

Do you really want to stay attached to your bike while it's tumbling down the highway? (Ouch!)
OTOH, cars are designed with a safety compartment in mind, and you're better off staying in that compartment in a wreck. I recall being in one pre-airbag front end wreck where EVERY piece of sheet metal in the car, plus the brake and clutch pedals, were bent. I opened the door (adrenalin) and walked out. My ankles still pop when I wake up.

"Intelligent Design" is a man-made, non- scientific theory that is heavily promoted by the Discovery Institute. The name "Intelligent Design" is a marketing ploy to arouse the passion of people who believe that God is the intelligent designer who created the universe. The Intelligent Design Theory being promoted by the Discovery Institute is now being foisted upon our public school systems. The Discovery Institute would love to see their non- scientific theory be included in Science classrooms across America.
Evolutionists believe in evolution, or the process of change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms from one generation to the next. Evolution is based on the scientific method.

I don't know anything about blog software, but the bookmarks should be stored somewhere on your sites directory.
Probably as a xml file. You can find xml file editors online.
But it's safe to have a backup.
I'm talking about my bookmarks for my ISP thingy when I hop on here to go somewhere.

OT: I ska-reewed up a link posting. I assumed we could use the same tags we use here. At the bottom I added "[Emphasis added..." ,etc. I think the only harm is, it looks dumb.
I get how it works, now. I think. I just wanted to excerpt a few key paragraphs to stay within fair use. Also, certain text really needed emphasis. Any way to do this other than all caps? Just curious. Thanks for your time.

I have to think about this one a bit.
...
Sounds like something is soaking up all of your computers processor time
if your mouse is not moving.
The first thing I'd try is make sure that you have a up to date browser.
Try using another browser if it is available to you and see if the same thing happens.
Ctrl-Alt-Delete and rebooting your system is pretty severe.
If you can see what is running at the time and what is taking up all of your processor time it would be a big help.
The worst case fix I know of is trying to do a repair install off of your install disks.
Get other opinions.

Nope, no way to do that. I deliberately limited the spinoff links to unformatted text, to avoid some of the problems that crop up otherwise.

I am probably going to really embarrass myself here and come across as stupid or naive but, hey, at least no one knows who I am! I have been reading the evolution vs ID threads and trying to determine just where I fit in. There have been so many terms and opinions thrown around that I am having a hard time sorting it all out. Can anyone out there give me a basic Readers' Digest type summary of exactly what the evolutionist believes and then what an IDer believes? Just sort of boil it down to the facts. Thanks
Sharmuta gave you a link at #89, that I suggest you read, and gman some additional information in #112, but to add my .02 - I see this as being whether or not we want our science classes watered down, and whether or not we want public school teachers teaching some version of religious belief that may or may not match your own.
Many of the comments you see use a lot of scientific jargon, but not being a scientist, I've found those to be confusing and not helpful to understanding the basic issue, which is, as Sharmuta said, " This is about an agenda to force religion into science classes."

And I have Norton Internet Security and Anti-viruse (which for some reason doesn't like my having turned off MS Auto updates) and Spyware doctor and I've clean out my cache, dumped cookie and etc.

I think Windows Defender runs some sort of "scanning process" from time to time. It'll eat up huge amounts of cpu and leave little for anything else.

It's a group of goons hired by Bill Gates to beat the crap out of anyone that wants to use an operating system other than Vista.....or, it's a preloaded antispam nuisance on Vista....or both?

Unfortunately, Firefox's Javascript engine has serious bugs. (Apparently even version 3.)
It's not the LGF scripts' fault, and there's nothing I can do on my side to fix it. There are memory leaks in Firefox that they can't seem to debug.
This explains why I am often reduced to killing Firefox about once per day, after leaving sites that use a lot of scripts running. Google is a culprit, too, if I forget to use NoScript to kill it's scripts. But dang, LGF is such a handy tool for the RSS stuff on the sidebar and for the Links, that I forget to shut it off once in a while!

I think Windows Defender runs some sort of "scanning process" from time to time. It'll eat up huge amounts of cpu and leave little for anything else.
I've tried to stop the scan in Task Manager, but I get a "function not allowed" message when I try.
I can't remember but the program in "task manager - processes" is called something like MSMAPger.exe You actually have to stop it three times, before it will go away ('till next reboot).

Defender is an anti-spyware program that sort of embeds itself into your operating system instead of sitting on the side like a regular anti-spyware program like spybot. I don't think it is tied into your firewall, so shutting that down won't affect Defender.

You can alleviate the problem somewhat by adding more RAM to your computer - that way there's more memory to leak and things don't get screwed up so fast.
Just for the record, the latest versions of Safari are the most robust, bug-free browsers I've ever used. Not perfect, but I've had Safari running for weeks without crashing or hanging up.
Right now I have an LGF Spy window open -- and it's been running without any problems for 5+ days without stopping.

Not sure - I used to run Norton full time, but with XP; I only turn it on each Saturday morning for a scan, then turn it back off. The firewall in XP is quite good & is as jealous as a stay-at-home wife, of other security systems.

Richard Wrangham has a theory that cooking, i.e., the control of fire increased brain mass by 100% in the transition from Homo Habilis to Homo Erectus. His contrarians say that the transition was due to the choice of caloric game content to marrow and brain, as opposed to pure muscle. Both could be true, of course. And there is evidence for both. I mean chewing predators like jackals, etc., are given to the same caloric sources. Not so many jackals cook though.( Chef Hyena, anyone?) Cooking fires on the other hand can only be traced 500,000 years. Erectus is a bit older, by a M. And archeology becomes very iffy beyond 50K or so because of geology.
I have nothing more to say on this.

Don't misunderstand. When I say "can't let go" I'm not talking about their beliefs. I'm talking about taking the argument to a personal insulting level (especially to the point of insulting our host.) Not smart moves. As for deadwood, have you ever noticed how many people that hardly ever post show up on ID threads to stir things up. I suspect many are trolls that just salivate at the opportunity to create more havok.

It actually went smooth, only took a few minutes. Most of my settings automatically transferred over... cookie allow/deny lists, passwords, bookmarks, add-ons, etc. The only things that didn't was my color theme [not compatible with 3.0 yet], and the Shazou add-on [same reason].
So far, I've only run into one bug, and its a minor one.
The pages load faster than 2.0, the memory usage is lower, and I'm getting used to the new symbols in the toolbar. So far I like the 3.

I guess that's because the Lizard Lounge is a java-based thing, running from inside the browser, so of course it's going to be a mite clunkier to work with than chatting on a dedicated, compiled binary.

Say, Michigan. Mr Wolf and my daughter looked at Hope and Hillsdale last week on a college search trip. She liked both of them much better than Notre Dame, which was the main reason they ventured so far.
Any local reputation I should know about?
Since Michigan--like the place I live--is also directly above the center of the Earth, I am qualified to comment on this question, wolfie. You can get a good idea about local stories related to Hillsdale College by doing a Google search with this: hillsdale site:mlive.com
Since the college is only about an hour away from Ann Arbor, Toledo, and Battle Creek (Jackson is closer, but less "busy") there are lots of things to do nearby. I don't know much about the town of Hillsdale, Michigan, but it's good Midwestern country. Make sure your daughter likes frigid, windy winters. Also it gets very cold there. Especially when Al Gore is nearby. And of course, in the winter, it is cold. Ann Arbor is also directly above the center of the Earth, but I find myself there more often than most other places, so that's why Hillsdale seems familiar.
Let's see, what else...Did I remember to warn you about the cold weather? Right now, it is exactly 57 degrees (f) here, directly above the center of the Earth.

Huh, I'd have thought that if you banned someone from LGF, that they would also be banned from the Lounge. I've only been in the Lounge once and discovered that - as fast as Ajax is - the lounge just goes to quickly for me to have an intelligent discussion with anyone.
If someone's trashing you in the Lounge, I'd regard that as if they were trashing you out here and ban them, as opposed to shutting the Lounge down.
moderators in the lounge might work.

FireFox 3 should officially be released in perhaps an hour or two:
It actually happens at 10am PST. That means 1PM EST.
I think I'll take Charles' advice about Opera, since I also heard they are committed to being the most bug-free, standards-compliant browser. No leaks is good leaks!
{ Assume the usual memory leaks. I'm frozen. }

re: #105 realwest
About your cursor-freezing, try a new mouse, or another mouse.
About a year ago I had similar symptoms. Cursor would behave eratically and then eventually freeze after several minutes of operation, or sometimes it would just freeze without warning. Sometimes when this happened the keyboard would also be dead, sometimes not. It got progressively worse over the months. Never a bluescreen or any kind of error msg. The functionality would just die.
These problems went away completely when, eventually, I tried another mouse. I'm currently using a Logitec optical mouse (no ball) that supports either a USB connection or (with supplied adapter) a PS2 connection. Nowadays, you would be lucky to find one of those in a store. Most mouses today are designed for one kind of connection or the other, exclusively.
I believe my "problem" mouse was designed with an inferior type of timing element for its internal cpu. (Specifically, with a resonator instead of a crystal, to save a few pennies.) For bytewise serial links, the timing must be within a tolerance of a percent or so, or the data sent and received will be corrupted. The fact that keyboard lockup often coincided with the mouse freezing should have been enough of a clue. [Bits, bytes and such were my bread and butter.]
Enlightenment came when I read on the net about the "reset codes" and handshakes that modern OS's routinely send to the mouse (and to the keyboard) from time to time. It occured to me that if any one of those gets corrupted, it's game over. There would be no recovery short of hitting the big red switch --exactly as I'd been doing.
It is strange that marginal operation of a mouse can bring a Windows OS to a complete standstill, and yet there's next to zero information about that on the net, that I could find anyway.

Charles: perhaps people would subscribe (pay) to access the lounge? I'm with realwest; it moves too fast for me if there are lots of folks (like over 5) in there.
Also, when did you become "more passionate" about ID foolishness than about jihad, music, and bicycle riding? I don't get around much, so just curious.

I wouldn't pay for that, either.
I usually enjoy the lounge when I've gone in there but I would say that there were more substantive discussions last year. Maybe just due to a change in membership?
I'm always amazed when other people want to tell the owner/author of a blog what they ought to be writing about. There seems to be this attitude that you should tailor what you say to the frequent readers of this blog. Wouldn't that fundamentally change the nature of LGF? LGF is honest and direct which I appreciate.

re: #274 Yankee Division Son Well, given what pat said about "community monitor" I'm not sure that's enough. But, as I said, if Charles finds somone dissing him, he ought to ban that person from LGF, including the lounge. Period. I sure don't see why, given Charles' answer to me at #273, any kind of monitor would be of much help (I gather that it's the service that charges for monitors, whether or not they are Lizards Charles' trusts - like the Monitor Lizards - or anyone else with similar authority).
I mean really, why the hell should Charles pay more money for a feature that he himself doesn't thnk is worth it?
Sudden thought just occured to me: we all know about the registered "lizards" out here who do nothing but ding down certain posts, or certain commenter's posts, or even entire threads - and they always have names with which I'm not familiar- I wonder if they hang out in the lounge and periodically come out to do their dirty deeds?
I wonder if AmateurAngler (a smart ass poster who was just banned by Charles on the next thread) used to hang in the Lounge?

Oh, and as lame as "ID" is, and as intellectually thuggish as its proponents can be, I'd still rather have Bobby Jindal (exorcism and ID included) a heartbeat away from the Oval Office than have Obama anywhere near it. Jindal seems like a very competent guy, and seems to love this country. He doesn't appear to view the entire Department of Defense budget as a slush fund for "social and economic justice" programs.
Good night :-)

Hey thanks abolitionist! But I've already tried that - in fact am using the same mouse you currently are using!
But mine came with a USB port and although I do have an adaptor from an old mouse, I can't get this one to work with the adaptor in a PS/2 Port, at all.
Maybe I should just try using a different USB port for the mouse - I gotta have about 7 or so USB ports I'm not using for anything!

Hhmmm, new meaning to going down the Creation v/s Evolution Road.
An evolution museum? Um, pretty much every Natural History museum I've been to could be called an evolution museum. The one in Philadelphia is superb, as is the one by the Park in NYC. The one in Chicago wasn't as good IMHO, but Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry is awesome.
I like museums, but an "evolution museum" would probably turn out to be as cartoonish as the "creationist museum" that has the displays of cavemen hunting T. Rex or whatever.

Holy crap - the Jindal ID thread is still moving along, over 1547 comments!
THAT'S WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND about the ID threads - not that Charles sees a need to have them, but why the hell are they all sooooo long?
I mean, you state your thoughts, answer anyone who responds in a respectful manner to you, and MOVE ON! It's not as if the number of comments or the verbiage is gonna change ANYONE'S mind.
Although, I guess since the Creationists' belief system IS challenged by the idea of ID being bogus
(why can't it just be a matter of faith - ya know, you either believe in Creationism or you don't?) you have to expect them to defend their faith with passion. Creationism is not science, it's a religion and evolution is a science not a religion.
I don't get it at all.

A USB-to-PS2 adapter is useful ONLY if the stuff in the mouse supports both kinds of protocols. Mine does. Most support only one protocol, and on such, an adapter won't help.
If you can, please try a different mouse.
