Hey! That's what I use! And it does not handle LGF very well. When the threads are long, I get:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see of the script will complete.

And I have to choose:

(Stop script) or (Continue).

What does that mean, Charles:

I get that with Firefox 2.0.0.14, almost every time I click over to the latest thread. I just hit "stop script" and move along. But it is kind of a pita.

13 Beobachter  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 1:02:11pm

Had been using RC2 for a while and just got the final version. Most of my favorite add ons work. My favorite one, Mouse Gestures, I had to hack a little to make it work.

15 freedombilly  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 1:03:28pm

Got it!

16 Macker  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 1:03:48pm

I'm very surprised by the snappiness. The download period began just over 3 hours ago. Don't be surprised if you can't get to the servers right away.
I also ran Acid3 and it scored 71; all the boxes looked in place, there just wasn't any color to them.
Whatever extensions and/or plug-ins you may have had under version 2.x don't work as of yet. Give those folks a little time to update them.

17 Lawrence Schmerel  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 1:04:20pm

Ta da! That's how long it took me to download, install, and start using it.

Portland OR Summer safety tips....

What's the first tip?

When your child is visiting a friend or family members’ house, it is important to ask the parent or guardian in the home about the presence of alcohol or guns in the home. The ASK campaign was developed to raise awareness among parents and guardians about gun safety and the website is located at [Link: www.paxusa.org....] You might be surprised about how many families not only have guns but do not keep them unloaded, locked, and maintained in a secure location.

What does the CDC have to say on hazards to kids?

Less than 1 year: Unintentional suffocation; unintentional motor vehicle crashes; unspecified homicide

1-3 years: Unintentional drowning; unintentional motor vehicle crashes; unintentional fire/burn

4-11 years: Unintentional motor vehicle crashes; unintentional fire/burn; unintentional drowning

12-19 years: Unintentional motor vehicle; homicide (firearm); suicide (firearm)

Firearms don't even rate a mention in the text.

Does Portland's Safety tips have a political agenda that rates higher than the safety of the kids?

First Petraeus, Now John McCain

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Craig Gilbert reports that MoveOn and AFSCME have teamed up to attack John McCain for supporting a long-term troop presence in Iraq. The ad, which features an actress portraying a mother telling McCain that he "can't have" her son Alex for Iraq, is also airing in Michigan and Ohio.

During the fight over withdrawal from Iraq, MoveOn.org accused General David Petraeus of "cooking the books" for the White House and asked whether he was "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" The group's leaders were angry with Petraeus for claiming that violence in Iraq was on the wane when, according to the group, "the surge strategy has failed."

Sounds like Seattle's Nickelbags, he just banned concealed carry on all city property, but he can't do it understate law. And officers if they notice it, can only ask the person to leave, no enforcement powers. He proposed a car free downtown Seattle, after driving to the event in a chauffeur driven SUV.

A big green-black thunder storm with insane wind gusts sprang up rather quickly right over Dallas Love Field Airport today.

I saw a Southwest Boeing 737 coming in for a landing when either the pilot, the tower or both decided that was an terrible idea. The pilot popped the wheels back up, retracted his flaps, made a 45° climbing turn with full climbing power (normally not allowed over Dallas). I'm sure at least half the people on the plane puked. He skirted the edge of the Thunder cell for several miles as he climbed out of sight—no doubt going to an alternate airport to land.

No other planes landed at Love Field for about an hour.

Military judge dismisses charges in Haditha case!

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- A military judge dismissed charges Tuesday against a Marine officer accused of failing to investigate the killings of 24 Iraqis.

Col. Steven Folsom dismissed charges against Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani after finding that a four-star general overseeing the case was improperly influenced by an investigator probing the November 2005 shootings by a Marine squad in Haditha.

Take that, Murthaf*cker.

Oh, no, you have to walk (an live on) the unpaved roads. They hide those so only the people who live here see them.

As for the train? Most dangerous place in Portland. Last week 6 (at last count) juvenile males beat the crap out of a young mother, right in front of her children. Her crime? Trying to get them to stop harassing an old person.

One of the newscasters let slip that the juveniles were African-American and that they had used racially abusive language.

Doesn't that go against the liberal meme?

obviously it was her fault as an oppressor trying to deny them their cultural heritage and right to freedom of expression...........

Boeing flyby wire systems allow pilots to over ride computer flight algorithms. Eg. a pilot commands a bank in excess of 30°, Boeing figures the pilot is smart enough not to do it unless it is necessary.

Airbus forces the pilot to stay within computer control restraints.

With results like this. Pilot was doing a low slow flyby, when he rotated the nose up to go around, the software thought he was trying to land and cut power. A flyby was not in the program.

Have you tried turning off any security software (e.g. anti-virus, firewall, etc)? What if you boot into 'Safe Mode with networking', can you download files then? Have you tried with any other browsers? I'd suggest the "Off-by-one" browser - very minimalist browser that doesn't rely on any OS components (and also doesn't do multimedia such as flash) - to see if the issue still occurs.

OK.
There was a time when Internet explorer was a sieve for viruses and malware.
I think that has been at least partly addressed with the most recent version, but its still worse in that regard than Firefox.
Firefox's design is more intuitive to use, with a nice bookmark link bar up top, and easier to use tabs.
It loads faster (and this current version is *noticeably* faster than IE).
Since Firefox is open source, there are a zillion useful free applications, from ad-blockers, to downloaders, etc.

re: #141 Spiny Norman

Believe it or not, the F-16 was (still is?) the same way. There were a lot of crashes early in its service caused by the computer "thinking" the pilot couldn't possibly want to do what he just attempted...

The early mod F-16 also had a motionless force detection side stick, it measured the force a pilot put on the stick but didn't move. In ACM training, a pilot would be a little excited and put to much force on the stick and if he was close to the ground over control. They've since put in a stick that moves with force feedback.

So what you are saying is that there was no intelligence behind the design of FF3? Glad I stuck with IE :-)

I'm saying some people are stubborn and refuse to change ;-)

No, I'm saying that incremental improvements over time can lead to something totally different than the original version, even if the differences between adjacent individual steps along the way seem barely noticeable.

I'm also saying that when one version is better, it can increase its presence within the population, outcrowding the competition.

Argh. I'm in Windows Hell.

For no reason that I can tell, Windows XP won't let me download any files all of a sudden.

I checked my internet zone security level and it's at medium. If I try to lower it, XP refuses to let me. If I download a file with Safari instead of Explorer, XP just deletes the file with no option to do anything else.

This is why I just HATE Windows. It's a fascist operating system. And I'm only half-kidding.

My Solution: Upgrade to Vista

(BTW, this isn't a joke. I've been using Vista since about a month after it came out and I really like it. Of course, I've never been able to switch to a Mac so I'm not saying that's bad either, I just think Vista isn't as bad as people think.)

This is amazing.

Did you know that there was another Mohammed cartoon crisis -- in 1925? I didn't either until I added this illustration to my Miscellaneous Mohammed page (fourth image down), with the caption:

On August 18, 1925, the British newspaper The Star published this cartoon by illustrator David Low showing cricket sports hero Jack Hobbs towering over other historical figures -- including Mohammed (spelled the old-fashioned way, "Mahomet," on his pedestal). A 2006 article in the London Times stated, "According to a Calcutta correspondent, when [this cartoon] appeared in the Indian version of the Morning Post, it 'convulsed many Muslims in speechless rage. Meetings were held and resolutions of protest were passed'." In contrast to the "cartoon controversies" of the 21st century, however, the fury in the Muslim world over this cartoon was almost completely ignored by the Europeans. The picture on the right is a close-up detail of the Mohammed figure in the original cartoon. From The British Cartoon Archive, University of Kent.

Obama: Bin Laden still free because of GOP tactics

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama says he'll take no lectures from Republicans on who will keep America safer. GOP rival John McCain's campaign criticized Obama Tuesday for speaking approvingly of the successful prosecution of terrorists.

A McCain aide said, "Obama is a perfect manifestation of a September 10th mind-set" and does not understand the dangers posed by U.S. adversaries.

Obama told reporters that the Republicans have no "standing to suggest that they've learned a lot of lessons from 9-11."

He said they "helped to engineer the distraction of the war in Iraq at a time when we could have pinned down the people who actually committed 9-11." He said Osama bin Laden is still at large in part because of their failed strategies.

You mean like Zacharias Moussaoui, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to name a few?

re: #195 looking closely

In regards to your Trojan Horse virus, I have had a similar problems on my internet machine at my office that runs XP Pro. The virus typically installs an installer program on your machine that creates the trojan program. The trojan program is windows based, installs at boot-up so windows won't let you delete it. I use Task manager to acquire the name of the virus, google it thru which I find out the name of the installer program. In windows, I delete the installer program and locate where the virus program resides. I then re-boot and use F8 and select Command prompt. Using DOS commands, I navigate to the directory where the virus resides and delete it. After re-booting normally, voila, the virus is gone. I hope this helps.

I have since installed Norton 360 on that machine and no longer have those type of headaches.

Whoops! :D :D :D

I'm sure they'll have that fixed before too long, though. Knock wood.

re: #306 markie

The ram issue is more of a function of background programs and the size of physical ram because of the virtual ram thing rather than the OS. Vista removes the need of background programs that you may need in XP. Don't trust what the start-up folder shows for start-up programs. Choose "run" under start and type in "msconfig", without the quotes. When the window appears, choose the startup tab and you will see just how many programs are running in the background chewing up memory and processor time. Now here's the good part, they all have a checkbox where you can un-check those you have no need for. When you exit, if you have made changes, the program will ask you if you want selective start-up. Click yes. Congratulations, you have just freed up availble memory and processor time.

320 Just_A_Grunt  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 3:56:59pm

The features offered by Firefox trump anything MS has and because of the ancient coding in IE not all web pages display as they should. Yup thats right a lot of web pages have issues with IE, just ask Charles about some of the hoops he has had to jump through with changes he has made here. In some cases he has had to in effect "dumb down" the updates to allow it to work.
Download and install FF and then open up IE and FF and visit a couple of web sites and see if you don't see a difference
With FF Ad Blcoking software and pop up blocker which is so much more user friendly and the bountiful number of Add Ons available and constatnly being created for FF it is just head and shoulders above IE.
Just my opinion

re: #321 stevieray

The "msconfig" and "regedit" work for all Windows platforms including Vista. You will be surprised to find out just how many useless programs are loaded at start-up. I have been fine tuning Windows machines for years and know just where to trim the fat (where many problems lie). Just one caveat, when using regedit, save the current copy before making any changes. These 2 programs are not mentioned in any Microsoft documentation because if they are not used properly, they could keep a machine from booting properly. One caution, if you don't understand the nature of the program when viewing the start-up tab in MSconfig, DO NOT de-select it! A word to the wise.

As a side note, I purchased my machine from HP. It came pre-loaded with Vongo as well as other programs I had no use for. I immediately deleted them off the hard disk and de-fragmented the drive. I then went into MSconfig and un-checked their start-up files. The machine booted quicker and exhibited more free memory.

I have other tips if you are interested.

Me @ 315 to looking closely

You need to run "regedit" to remove all entries that include the name of the virus program since the computer will use up processor time in an attempt to load a non-existant program. Before you make changes to the registery, export it to the HD under a different name should you screw up. I know, I know I said save but the term is export. Should you screw up, you can always import the back-up under the name you chose. Sorry!

Files tie up HD space, registery entries tie up memory and processor time.

re: #328 stevieray

Another item that should increase your computer's performance is to change the virtual memory setting to equal the physical memory of your machine. This setting, under Vista, is located in control panel, system, advanced tab, performance, settings, advanced tab, virtual tab, change. Input the amount of ram your machine contains in 1024 megs. This will limit the amount of HD space allotted to virtual memory rather than allow windows to expand it and contract it at will. Failure to do this will allow windows to cause fragmentation of your HD that will eventually slow your machine down

Thanks for all the advice. If y'all never see me again, that'll mean I was playing around and things went horribly awry!

What I really need to do is bite the bullet and get a new desktop. My current one is a six year old Dell with 512 ram and a 20 gig HD. I got it for free about a year ago, its been a loyal soldier, but its not really worth upgrading because the ram is already maxed out, and its a small form factor box -- too much of a pain to find hardware that'll fit.

340 GeeWiz  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 6:27:11pm

re: #339 stevieray

I think it takes out the registry entries, but I don't see that mentioned there.

I suspect you are correct about removing the registery entries.

A 512 meg machine is a dinosaur. You are most certainly correct in needing a newer machine. Today, memory is more valued than speed. In MS based machines, RAM memory can compensate for processor speed. It is an interesting dynamic that only nerds like me can appreciate. Your problem may lie in the limits of your machine's memory expansion.

If anyone is interested, I would be happy to explain the concept of "virtual memory". I suspect not and with that I shall make my exit. Goodnight all and may God bless.

"Virtual Memory" is the memory exhibited by members of the Bush Administration when they are compelled to appear before congress.

Zing sis bah!

In all the excitement, I plain forgot that FF3 requires, on Mac, OS 10.4+ and I went and overwrote my FF2 before I realized my error. (RTFM, and all that).
So I'm still running 10.3 because Apple doesn't seem to have 10.4 available online only 10.5, but I don't want to have to buy an Intel Mac to run 10.5. (Running a first-generation iMac G5)
So I fired up Safari to find an FF2 download, but not to be had - everything I found redirects to FF3 download.
I did manage to find an FF1 download, so I got that going on, but lost my extensions, not that I had too many. Other features missing, of course, but at least I kept my bookmarks.
So does anyone know where you can still get FF2 download?

The new Thunderbird email program should be used with caution. Trusting soul that I am, I downloaded and installed it, and lo! several thousand emails on my HD went missing. I found where I'd saved the previous version and re-installed it, emails found and back to normal. 45 minutes of unneeded stress.

Disaster. I d'loaded the new F3, and my keboard instantly started malfunctioning. I system restored to before the download, and now F2 won't load. Keyboard is still screwy.

In addition, several other things have gone haywire all of a sudden, inc. Window Update won't work. And I had a heck of a time logging on to LGF.

Why me, Lord?
