Another Haditha Marine Exonerated

Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 3:06:36 pm PDT

All charges against the highest-ranking officer in the political circus known as the Haditha trial have been dropped. And get a load of how Reuters describes it:

LOS ANGELES, June 17 (Reuters) - A military judge on Tuesday dismissed the case against the highest-ranking U.S. Marine charged in the deaths of 24 Iraqi civilians at Haditha, whittling down the list of those who must still face justice for the 2005 killings to just the accused ringleader.

As excited as I am by this, Major Chessani could still face charges. The charges were dropped because one of the initial investigators ended up becoming a legal advisor to the General responsible for ordering the trial. Basically, a mistrial was declared. They could choose to prosecute again.

If your top desire is to watch our military folks put on trial for doing their jobs when you send them into harm's way, then by all means vote for Obama. I'd guess his Sec Def and chiefs of staff will make sure that such trials come to the "correct" verdict next time too.

27 deadman  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 3:16:13pm

It is unlikely Major Chessani will face charges again. Dropping the charges on this pretext allowed the Marines to avoid the embarrassment of another "not guilty" courts martial. He was the least culpable of the eight even in the prosecution's tortured narrative. He was scheduled to be sacrificed in order to demonstrate that the US military wasn't protecting higher echelon officers.

Yes, think about it long and hard.

Folks who are charged, even those who are eventually exonerated, will miss out on long months, maybe years of their lives while dealing with the charges, not to mention legal expenses and the stress on families.

As I pointed out in a previous thread, LTC Chesanni's USMC career is finished- He'll never be promoted to Bird Colonel after this.

I just hope he's close enough to retirement to hang on to get his pension.
USMC LTC's usually have around 15 years in the Corps, if not more, so hopefully he'll be able to make it to 20 years.

And Murtha, fuck you, you fat piece of shit. Any real man would apologize to these men.

36 deadman  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 3:19:47pm

Murtha will stand by his slur because only one of the accused was exonerated. The others had the charges dismissed or dropped (wink, wink). They never proved their innocence.

37 MandyManners  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 3:19:52pm
Chessani was the highest ranking officer accused of wrongdoing in the shootings at Haditha, which was portrayed by Iraqi witnesses as a "massacre" of unarmed civilians and brought international condemnation on U.S. troops.

The witnesses claimed angry Marines killed the two dozen men, women and children after a popular comrade, Lance Cpl. Miguel "TJ" Terrazas, was killed by a roadside bomb.

Defense attorneys said the civilians were killed during a pitched battle with insurgents in and around Haditha that followed the death of Terrazas.

The amount of bias in those three paragraphs is stunning.

Guilty until proven....not enough evidence. They won't ever admit to themselves that these soldiers were innocent. It's not in their DNA.

It is confounding why. They like the troops to do humanitarian missions , like after the tsunami. It was ok,that our troops were disrespected & forced back to the ships , so that Islamic soil was not defiled by sleeping Infidels.
They would accept the military if they laid down their weapons & you know, kinda acted like the Peace Corps.

Soldiers lives
Children in corrupt failing schools
Families in dangerous cities like Chicago, Philly, Baltimore, DC and LA

(Shooting tonight at a high school graduation in North Philly - yes 40% of kids do graduate from high school in Philly and a gunkid shot another kid who had been an official graduate for all of 10 minutes.)

Drivers lives by making it difficult to buy heavy duty cars.

Women's and girl's lives who are told they can have "safe sex" by loading up on the condoms, and taking showers with thier boyfriends (In the school sex ed curriculum)

Hurt children, hurt families, hurt our military, and hurt business - they are TOXIC!

(Agree w/ u... but how did the dems help spread AIDS?)

They refused to shut down the bath houses. They adamantly opposed treating AIDS with the official protocol for an infectious disease, and did not mandate reporting. it was a total fiasco, and they finally saw the light of day - but it was a knock down drag out fight. i was there for it in the Bay Area in the late 80's early 90's. They screwed up big time.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to volunteer to put on this country's uniform, and go protect these ungrateful, traitors bastards in congress, and everywhere on the left. these people do not deserve to call themselves Americans, they are the furthest thing from it, and can claim that title by purely accident of birth. O/T:

Special effects maestro Stan Winston dies of cancer at 62

LOS ANGELES — Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning special-effects maestro responsible for bringing the dinosaurs of “Jurrasic Park” and other iconic movie creatures to life, has died. He was 62.

Winston died at his home in Malibu surrounded by family on Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a representative from Stan Winston Studio.

Working with such directors as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Tim Burton in a career spanning over four decades, Winston created some of the most memorable visual effects in cinematic history. He helped bring the dinosaurs from “Jurassic Park,” the extraterrestrials from “Aliens, the robots from “Terminator” and even “Edward Scissorhands” to the big screen.

“The entertainment industry has lost a genius, and I lost one of my best friends with the death Sunday night of Stan Winston,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. “Stan’s work and four Oscars speak for themselves and will live on forever.

What will live forever in my heart is the way that Stan loved everyone and treated each of his friends like they were family.”

Winston won visual effects Oscars for 1986’s “Aliens,” 1992’s “Terminator
2: Judgment Day” and 1993’s “Jurassic Park.” He also won a makeup Oscar for 1992’s “Batman Returns.”

Winston was nominated for his work on “Heartbeeps,” “Predator,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “Batman Returns,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “A.I.” He last worked with director Jon Favreau on “Iron Man.”

At the time of his death, Winston was in the process of transforming his physical makeup and effects studio into the new Winston Effects Group with a team of senior effects supervisors. Winton’s most recent projects included “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins,” “G.I. Joe,” “Shutter Island” and Cameron’s “Avatar.”

As a child growing up in Virginia, Winston enjoyed drawing, puppetry and classic horror films. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1968, Winston moved to Southern California to become an actor but instead worked behind the scenes and completed a three-year makeup apprenticeship program at Walt Disney Studios in 1972.

I read the al-Jazeera piece. Interestingly, they stated that the Haditha Incident was "the most serious" situation of its type. Assume, for purposes of debate that every allegation was true. The "body count" tops out in any report at 24. During the height of the "insurgency," that was an average night for many "militant groups." Considering there was a "war" going on, I believe this speaks well of US and other "Coalition" Forces over the course of 5 years. What say "ye's?"

The cost to re-purchase Microsoft Office etc and have all the programs installed is pissing off my husband. Don't ask why we have to re-purchase Microsoft Office --it's too painful to explain. Anyway--I'm researching other options. Like maybe a MacBook.

Of course mistreatment of prisoners of war should be investigated and punished by the offender's superiors, but a mistreated prisoner of war doesn't get to go free or prosecute his captors.
And since when is it necessary to prove that an enemy combatant has committed a crime in order to keep him in custody?
I must be a total idiot because I thought that in war, if you capture a member of the enemy forces, then you have the right to incarcerate them until the end of the war - period.

From your link, the Obamessiah Obamanation said:

"[the Republicans] helped to engineer the distraction of the war in Iraq at a time when we could have pinned down the people who actually committed 9-11."

I thought they were all incinerated.

Ah, well, first, 9/11 was commited by the calendar, it was a deadly hijacking of airplanes and public buildings which we are concerned about.

Second, as to who was incinerated besides the 3,000 people in the buildings and airplanes, I will bet that Bush's best information since 2002 has been that yes, bin Laden bin dead, but that for his own convenience he has pretended that bin Laden is still alive. While I once thought that a very entertaining move, if it's true, I wonder about its wisdom now, especially as the facts may not be clear to all, ever. Just as the best info on the WMD is that they were there (and we still don't know for sure if they were moved out in advance of the war, while we dithered for six months, just as the Iranians have just moved $80,000,000,000 out of western banks while Gordon Brown and the west speechified about what they might finally get around to doing at some point), maybe the best info on bin Laden was wrong then, or is wrong now.

Such is life, and war. You seldom take it to court and prove anything, and a wise man doesn't want to.

When it comes to Marines they are "obviously" in line to face "justice", but when touching terrorists over at G-bay, they are all innocent Muslims with sensitivities to panties and big noses.

At least this disgusting bias reminded me how great of a lunch I had today.

338 lawhawk  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 6:09:59pm

So, Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani had the charges dropped. Excellent news for him. Bad news for Murtha, who pushed the notion that Chessani and the other Marines involved in the Haditha incident were cold blooded murderers.

Let's not forget who else needs to be held accountable.

Obama. He relied on Murtha's judgment when commenting about the incident. He thinks that Murtha had it right.

Let's also remind folks that for someone who claims expertise in constitutional law, that Obama favored treating those Marines as guilty before the investigation was complete. That Murtha engaged in poisoning the well by making egregious statements about the Marines without any knowledge of the facts shows that Obama has little experience of his own and would knowingly rely upon those whose agendas are anything but honorable.

339 Nightlight  Tue, Jun 17, 2008 6:14:44pm

Kucinich still has allegations at his web site!

To this day, Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), has the audacity to keep on his website allegations of war crimes and cover-ups committed against civilians in Haditha with no evidence to substantiate it. Navigating through Kucinich's site and clicking on the more link attached to his lies retrieves a document that was never published. The questions for the people of Ohio's 10th district are why? Why is their cowardly representative still spreading vicious lies? And why are you not holding him accountable? John Murtha made one statement, yet Kucinich still maintains the guilt of these men...

...The indelible stain that the Haditha incident will leave upon the US Marine Corps and indeed the country is not from the actions of our heroic Marines. It is not from the deaths of innocent civilians, the terrorists who ambushed our Marines bear that responsibility. It is from the rush to judgment; it is from one of the Marines' own --a sitting congressman-- telling the world that he heard from the highest echelons of the Marine Corps that Frank Wuterich's squad committed cold-blooded murder and four officers covered it up. That single, treasonous statement has inflicted more damage to our military than terrorists ever could

The lives of these Marines and their families have been devastated. After the last Marine is exonerated, those falsely accused should make a trip to Murtha’s Capital Hill office. Along with the Marines should be the Commandant of the Marine Corps, their families and a lawyer representing them as a unit. Fox news should tag along so that they can capture the moment when they demand an on air apology. And then serve Murtha with papers for their defamation law suit.

349 ROB.SCHMITT  Wed, Jun 18, 2008 5:43:40pm

"Abscam" Jack Murtha has been a traitor to America since 1978(?)
Back then, he attempted to sell-out the U.S. government to Arabs to benefit himself.
His Haditha comments demonstrate that he is still doing it.
Oh, wait... He was a war veteran?!

So was Benedict Arnold!

There is a possibility that the charges can be refiled. Not sure why the prosecution would do this, in that they have the same lack of evidence etc. that had the original charges dismissed. I think it would be an exercise in futility. Besides, no one likes getting their nose bloodied twice.
