Tom Wolfe: Rather and 60 Minutes Are 'Idiots'

Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 9:29:42 am PDT

At Newsbusters, Noel Sheppard has a post about Tom Wolfe’s appearance on the Charlie Rose show; Wolfe’s comments about the Rathergate scandal are great: Tom Wolfe: Rather, 60 Minutes ‘Idiots’ for Airing Bush National Guard Story.

CHARLIE ROSE: You are at the stage in your fourth decade where people want you to give one last great lecture. I know you do them too. So if you were giving one last lecture about journalism.

TOM WOLFE: About journalism.

CHARLIE ROSE: Not just about finance but about journalism, what would you say because you`ve seen so much of it?

TOM WOLFE: I think what I would say is today as newspapers are declining rapidly, they`re losing money. I would just point out that all news today comes from the newspapers. All of it. Television has never initiated a successful story in its life. When they have a big story it`s always wrong. They had something about Israelis and atomic bombs. Absolutely wrong. They have George Bush being criticized in some letter — The so- called Dan Rather ...

CHARLIE ROSE: About George Bush`s... How he got into the National Guard.

TOM WOLFE: Right. Idiots. They should have looked at the piece of paper. Obviously not written by a typewriter.

Indeed. Very obviously.

There are going to be 3 responses to this: exploding heads; "How did they get to him?"; and "Poor man, it's a pity to see a once great intellect go senile publicly."

This has got to hurt, along with Mamet.

That was my first thought when I saw it.

So I scanned a copy of an actual typewritten document and posted it on my old website. Before the webmaster asked me to take it down there were 17,000 hits and 3000 full downloads of my travel orders from February of 1983.

From Mia Farrow's speech to the UN on Tuesday on Darfur:

Sound familiar?

This body referred Darfur to the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against Minister Ahmed Harun, responsible for crimes against humanity in the Darfur region. Instead of arresting him, the Sudanese regime made Harun their liaison to oversee the deployment of UNAMID.

As the Prosecutor of the ICC told you last month, Sudan has put the arsonist in charge of deploying the firefighters. Instead of removing the arsonist, you are negotiating with him.

I ask you: How long will you continue to allow the government of Sudan to manipulate this body? Did Adolph Hitler get to choose which troops should be deployed to end his genocide?

For the most part, it was election-year symbolism." (Title of the editorial: "The Oil Future: Government can't repeal the law of supply and demand, but it could curb speculative excess.")

Now, this is delicious irony. Obama asked supporters who were wearing headscarves to move out of a location behind Obama where they could be photographed:

Two Muslim women at Barack Obama's rally in Detroit Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women's headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

The campaign has apologized to the women, both Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally.

I actually do feel sorry for those women. Here, they thought that Obama would support their interests - but he can't do so openly because it might upset another key group that he needs to curry favor with.

The MSM made it's choice: wires and lights in a box is what we got...

I tell my children that with knowledge comes responsibility. An inescapable knowledge of Darfur is yours. It is your right and responsibility to stand up to the Khartoum regime and ensure the full and effective deployment UNAMID in Darfur.

Nothing has changed since Nov 2007 when Jean-Marie Guehenno expressed the fear that, quote, the “force will not have the capability to defend itself, and that carries the risk of humiliation for the Security Council and the United Nations, and tragic failure for the people of Darfur.”

ANd semi-related to that post..

Kanye West booed off stage

But after arriving onstage over an hour-and-a-half late at Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee at the weekend, the rapper was pelted with glowsticks and jeered by the crowd. Problems with his Glow In The Dark stage set were blamed for the delay, which resulted in Kanye taking to the stage at 4.30am to cries of "Kanye sucks!"

I'm sure those were all GWB operatives in the crowd booing him.
