Muslim Women Receive Apology From Obama Staff - Not Good Enough

Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 1:47:44 pm PDT

They were barred by campaign volunteers from appearing in visible seats behind Barack Obama, because they were wearing Muslim headscarves. A campaign official apologized to them when it became a news story.

But that’s not good enough; they won’t be happy until they’ve made a presidential candidate grovel: Muslim woman demands an apology from Obama after camera snub.

One of two Muslim women who were denied visible seats behind Barack Obama’s stage at Joe Louis Arena on Monday because they wore head scarves said they deserve a personal apology from Obama and close-up seats at a future campaign rally.

Hebba Aref, 25, and her friend, Shimaa Abdelfadeel, received apologies from the campaign Tuesday after they complained that they were not allowed to sit near the podium when campaign volunteers learned that they wear the traditional Muslim head garb called a hijab.

Aref said she was especially disappointed because she was attracted to Obama’s message of unity and inclusion. She said she’d like more than an apologetic phone call from a campaign official. “I was kind of in shock that had happened,” said Aref, a Bloomfield Hills resident and graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. “I’ve lived here practically my whole life, and never been treated that way. It’s so s ironic that it was at his rally, he obviously would not promote any discrimination at all.”

Aref said she received a phone call and apology from an Obama campaign offiicial, but said that’s not enough. “I do appreciate they’re taking the time to look into what happened,” Aref said. “I think it’s a huge deal. I was hoping for an apology form Senator. Obama himself. He needs to send a strong message this kind of discrimination won’t be tolerated.”

UPDATE at 6/18/08 2:03:49 pm:

Here comes the Saudi-funded, Hamas-linked radical Islamic front group calling itself the Council on American Islamic Relations, right on cue, trying to capitalize on this: CAIR Urges Obama to Include Muslim Women in Upcoming Events.

Notice: they aren’t really protesting this incident, they’re just trying to get more visibility out of it. Contrast this to their likely reaction if a similar incident had happened at a John McCain rally.

Obama campaign apologizes for excluding women in hijab at Detroit rally

"Although we welcome the Obama campaign's apology, we are extremely concerned about the level of Islamophobia in our society that would prompt other minorities to view Muslim supporters as potential liabilities. We hope that Senator Obama will personally apologize to the two women and that he decries the current Islamophobic climate in our nation that is not only attacking him but has even jaded some within his own campaign."

Dawud Walid, director of the local office of CAIR, said a member of Obama's staff told him that they are attempting to contact each of the individuals involved so that a high-ranking aide could issue a personal apology.

It has repeatedly been my experience that "real-life" bigotry and racism is more frequently perpetrated by those that identify themselves as "liberals".

To be sure, I've seen it from conservatives, and on occasion, reverse bigotry and racism by "minority" members, but it's far more common to find it manifested by those that consider themselves enlightened.

I find it hard to believe that conservatives are just better at "not saying shit out loud"... That argument just doesn't hold true.

That, and all the supposed redneck-KKK-sheet-wearing-inbred-NASCAR-racists that *I* have ever met were Democrats. How'd that lie get floated?

Well, not really. These things are very tightly controlled. Take a close look at the people sitting behind candidates when they speak. Obama can't have too many black people behind him, Cinton can't have too many women. McCain will mix in as many non-whites as he can muster. Those people are hand picked, not too fat, not too ugly, etc. All the candidates do it.

That article says South Korea was providing the assistance:

According to the French report, the new information confirms earlier claims that South Korea had assisted Syria in its nuclear endeavors. This negates a speech made on Tuesday by IAEA Director General Mohammad ElBaradei, who said in an interview to Al Arabiya television that "we have no evidence that Syria has the human resources that would allow it to carry out a large nuclear program. We do not see Syria having nuclear fuel."

North. South? What's a few miles and a DMZ between friends?

Reposting my comment attached to Alouette's link:

Very interesting.

Day One: Muslim women in hijabs barred from photo ops.

Day Two: Obama poses personally with a woman in a hijab. Apologies are distributed.

Day Three: Offended hijab-wearer says a personal apology will not suffice: only being invited to the next photo op will prove Obama's lack of prejudice.

Coming Soon to Photo-Op Near You: Stay tuned for the next thrilling installment of Yes Senator, No Senator, as our favourite, lovable Ambassador of Hope!Change! masterfully spins yet another tele-prompted web of obscuration.

(I'd love to install cameras behind Obama and catch him in the act of crossing his fingers while speaking. Perhaps that would provide a clue as to what he really believes.)

We have it confirmed once again that Muslims are so perpetually enraged, brainwashed into feeling like aggrieved and lacking in "empathy" that they cannot think tactically. Obama is crypto-Muslim or at least Muslim-sympathetic candidate who shares many of the same strategic goals as Islamists, yet he needs to downplay this to win. Even CAIR, now known for patience, is biting their tongue when Obama publicly distances himself from Islam and understands that they need to give Obama leeway to win. But not these young Muslimas.

excerpt:

'The notion that one can be asked to move from their seat, at a campaign rally, the heart and essence of Democracy, is one that I simply cannot agree to. All people, regardless of race, creed, or manner of dress, deserve to remain in the seat they reserved. Whether it was by draping a coat over it, or asking someone to hold it for them, all methods of seat reservations should be acceptable in the America we will build.'

To appeal to rural white voters Obama's campaign thinks that they have to make a public spectacle in which Obama is seen as anti-"them" (whomever them might be) and this is it.

I want to see a Gaza Palestinian sitting next to a Hebron settler, I want to see a Black Panther sitting next to a KKK member, I want to see a feminist next to a misogynist, I want to see Sunni next to Shiite, IRA next to RAF...

The magic of Obama heals ALL intolerance!

Hurrah for Change!

CBS’s Tough Look at Obama: Loves Scrabble, Doesn’t Like Ice Cream

On Wednesday’s CBS "Early Show," co-host Julie Chen teased an upcoming segment on Barack Obama: "...during the long primary season, we all learned a lot about Barack Obama. He is a Senator. He's a Harvard grad. He's a husband. And he is a father. But this morning, you're going to learn five things you probably don't know about Barack Obama." Later, in David Letterman style, correspondent Jeff Glor introduced the story: "...here are the top five things you likely don't know about Barack Obama."

Among those things, were important facts such as "Number four -- in addition to enjoying basketball and cycling during down time, Obama loves to play Scrabble." In addition to the top five, Glor later added: "Now one more thing we learned that didn't quite make our list, Julie. Obama's job as a teenager was at a Baskin Robbins and to this day he does not like ice cream." Chen responded: "So rocky road is like his Kyrptonite?" While Glor and Chen focused on Obama trivia, earlier in the show, co-host Russ Mitchell offered a mere one sentence news brief on the Illinois Senator’s opposition to a Republican plan to allow offshore oil drilling.

Good afternoon, Lizards.

I am astounded that IN AMERICA people who are properly admitted to an event can't sit where they want to BECAUSE OF APPEARANCES.

Yes, Obama should apologize personally; it's the correct thing to do.

I, on the other hand, am looking forward to watching him throw the volunteer under the bus.

According to #66, the "studio audience" is commonly selected for appearance/contrast/diversity.

If this is true, he should just say so and move on. It's his only way out, IMO.

He might do it if he really feels bad about it, but don't you think he could turn this to his advantage?

He gets up on stage with these two women...he gives a moving rendition of something sounding remorseful and takes full responsbility and then turns to each of them and offers his hand...they embrace him, one after the other...not a dry eye in the room.

re: #135 2by2

typical self destruct, 'Palastinians" were the only numbnuts to support Saddam, when the invasion was already under way

Actually, CAIR has started sending mixed signals. They have until recently been refraining from any criticism or making any demands of Obama. They have even been working to help distance Obama in the public's mind from any association with Islam, while praising him and accounting for his support among Muslims as based on policy positions only (see below). However, it seems at least some CAIRistas have recently fallen off the wagon of taqiyya for Obama. Perhaps Obama's AIPAC speech was too much for some in CAIR, as it was for HAMAS, despite his subsequent disavowal through an aide of his AIPAC statement about Jerusalem.

Luttwak Does Not Speak for a Billion Muslims
By Ahmed Rehab, CAIR-Chicago
May 20, 2008

In response to New York Times article: “President Apostate?"

...

Of course, most Muslims have TV sets and follow the news. They are already aware of the fact that, although Obama's father was Muslim, he himself is a Christian. There is no bounty on his head, and talking to people on the streets in Muslim countries explains why: most are not preoccupied with the religious or race affiliation of American presidents. They dislike George Bush because they see him as an arrogant warmonger. They liked John Kennedy because they felt he was an empathetic and intelligent leader. Both were white and Christian.

Contrary to Luttwak's final conclusion, Obama is already quite popular in the Muslim world and is likely to be even more so if elected president. But it is not necessarily because he is black or has Muslim ancestry it is because Obama is widely perceived as the most likely candidate to bring an end to the current war in Iraq and treat the rest of the Muslim world with some respect.

Ahmed M. Rehab is an American Muslim activist with the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

I tend to side with Kilgore on this.

Image is everything, and, to be honest, this doesn't necessarily have to come down to the candidate. If it's something televised, it can be the director who asks for someone more attractive in the shot, or it can be a producer that doesn't like the look of the people in the background, and so on. It can even be as innocuous as the people having the wrong color on, or wearing clothes (like certain patterns) that don't read right on television. So they're moved.

And yes, the dudes in the Motorhead t-shirts would be moved out of camera range. Unless they were going specifically for the Motorhead demographic.

It’s so ironic that it was at his rally, he obviously would not promote any discrimination at all.”

If someone posted this earlier -- sorry haven't had the chance to read everything yet -- but...did I miss something here? Is she really saying that BO "obviously" wouldn't promote discrimination because he's black? Wasn't one of the volunteers that refused the seating also black?

Besides, if I was included on stage as associated closely with the speaker, I sure as heck would not want to start at their ass the entire time!

OT:

On cue, Obama's fellow Democrats have come up with the most novel idea. They want to nationalize the country's refineries.

It's compare and contrast time with McCain's plan to build 45 nuclear power plants. One builds new energy generating capacity. The other seeks to take the private sector out of the equation and doesn't add one watt of power to the equation.

That's on the heels of Maxine Waters calling for the nationalization of the oil industry.

This is all that the Democrats have to offer - socialism.

Hebba Aref, 25, and her friend, Shimaa Abdelfadeel, received apologies from the campaign Tuesday after they complained that they were not allowed to sit near the podium when campaign volunteers learned that they wear the traditional Muslim head garb called a hijab.

Shimaa Abdelfadeel is a student at University of Michigan and called Israel a 'flawed democracy'.

Promoters of Zionism tout its democracy, which offers legal protection to all. There exists, however, a gap between theory and practice that has bred racial apartheid within Israeli society and between Israel and its occupied populations in Palestine. In a state that asserts the dominance of one religious persuasion, democracy cannot really flourish. By failing to protect a plurality of ethnic and religious groups, the Israeli government exposes non-Jewish populations to persecution in a variety of ways. Israeli political leaders like Avigdor Lieberman, who was recently promoted deputy prime minister, explicitly support the ethnic cleansing of Arab populations as a way of preserving the Jewish majority in Israel.

...The end of Israeli occupation and an overhaul of Israel’s exclusionary state are prerequisites to a just solution. The UN General Assembly recently condemned the attacks in Gaza, but the United States vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, thus exerting American power to excuse its ally’s atrocities. But massive American military aid also facilitates Israeli crimes. Our university is complicit too through its investments in arms companies that provide Israel its arsenal. Divesting from these companies would allow our campus to invest in just outcomes rooted in equality and lasting security for Israelis and Palestinians.

So if the point of wearing a hijab is because a Muslim woman must be modest, then what the heck were they doing trying to get their mugs on TV?

Actually, they weren't. In both cases their companions were asked to sit behind Obama before the campaign staffer realized said companions were accompanied by women in headscarves.

I just took an interesting spin around the liberal blogosphere and the excuses were flying thick and fast. The most popular one was that the staffers are prejudiced, not Obama. Second most popular was that the campaign had to do it because Americans are a bunch of prejudiced bigots.

Weak. Don't they realize the tone is set by the person in charge? Here, the tone is "win at any cost."

Perusing the liberal blogs its funny.. They blame this incident on Republicans. After all, its those Repugs who are Islamophobic! Thats why Obama had to play Hide the Hijabs.

Where is the logic there? Nowhere.

The truth is simpler. Obama knows he needs the uneducated blue collar redneck Democrat votes, of which there are plenty in this State. And as much as "those people" don't like GWB, they really don't like the kind of people who attend Mosques and wear Hijabs.

320 Josephine  Wed, Jun 18, 2008 3:41:01pm

re: #296 Shug

That's because it's not about modesty as we understand it; it's about modesty as prescribed by Mohammed.

This type of thing never fails to amaze me. They're speaking a different language with a totally different frame of reference. Modesty does not equal modesty, Islam does not equal peace.

(I know you know all of that.)

I don't have a citation for this but my husband remembers reading someone's account of his travels in the Middle East (which took place some time ago). The writer was on a camel caravan in the desert when a woman in the full niqab (face covered, netting over the eyes, only hands and feet showing) fell off her camel and tumbled head over heels down a hill. As she rolled, her dress lifted and revealed that she was not wearing any underwear. After she righted herself and returned to the camels, her husband praised her for not revealing her face during her fall.

/Different priorities.

326 satan sidekick  Wed, Jun 18, 2008 4:00:49pm

Has anyone seen this?

Islamic School Valedictorian Convicted of Terrorism
You understand that words matter. That ideas have consequences. And here’s a very chilling example.
Last week the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report regarding information contained in textbooks found in the Islamic Saudi Academy (ISA), located in Fairfax County, Virginia.
The Commission announced its report with this press release:
Saudi Arabia: USCIRF Confirms Material Inciting Violence, Intolerance Remains in Textbooks Used at Saudi Government's Islamic Saudi Academy
This is the school whose 1999 class valedictorian, Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, won the school’s award “Most Likely to Be a Martyr,” and who was later convicted on charges of terrorism and attempting to assassinate President Bush.
This should not surprise us. 1,400 years of Islamic history and 270 million non-Muslims dead should be ample evidence that the political ideology of jihad, proclaimed throughout the holy books of Islam, is typically followed by the act of jihad.
How many other students of ISA, past and present, are now terrorist threats to non-Muslims here in America? Who knows? Do we want to wait to find out?
The longer such material exists inside Islamic institutions here in America, the more jihadists will be produced. It’s time for our elected officials to take this threat seriously, but to get them to do so means we have to act.
That’s why your signing our petition was so important, and for that I thank you.
We will continue to keep you apprised of news and developments related to the threat of radical Islam. Oh, puhleeze. The hijab is not political in and of itself, does not make a political statement? The hijab does not indicate 'radical', or more accurately, normal islam? And you don't think the grovelling demanded by these musliminahs is not an indication of 'radical' islam?
