We’re having a heat wave,
A tropical heat wave,
The temperature’s rising,
It isn’t surprising,
She certainly can can-can.

She started a heat wave
By letting her seat wave
In such a way that
The customers say that
She certainly can can-can.

Gee, her anatomy
Makes the mercury
Jump to ninety-three.

We’re having a heat wave,
A tropical heat wave,
The way that she moves
That thermometer proves
That she certainly can can-can.

This weather is just so strange. Here in Portland, OR we have had a very long, cold spring. Today is the first day of Summer, it is supposed to be about 80 (the warmest it has been in weeks), but tomorrow back to 65 and cloudy.

My strawberry crop is dismal. Just not enough sun. The berries are starting to turn red, but they aren't very sweet.

Although, the cooler weather has made the lettuce and brocolli last longer. But, the tomatoes are just sitting there. You can almost hear them asking for a blanket.

Odd year.

an observation on a beautiful Detroit afternoon...

There's a house over on the other side of Woodward from me. In front of that house is an 'Obama for President' sign. Just by itself, it is just a plain lawn sign with a name on it, but what the homeowners have done is set up red, white, and blue bunting and American flags all around it. The result is a colorful display that makes you look twice. Sorta sums up this candidacy for me. On his own and with his record of accomplishments, not really much there. But when the media and his staffers have added all the extra's and some glitz, you get a whole different perspective and a cult of personality.

Recently, I have been featuring stories on my site that involve the vicious tactic known as sham peer review. In sham peer review, doctors are targeted by corrupt forces and charges are orchestrated against them and many times their careers are ruined. Doctors are targeted for a number of reasons like jealousy. Unfortunately, many times they are targeted because they are attempting to blow the whistle on other illegal and corrupt behavior. In other words, doctors have their lives ruined because they are trying to do the right thing, and the underlying corruption is then swept under the rug. This is an evil tactic and it must stop.

Here are some of the stories. The first is a doctor in South Carolina after he tried to report on a nurse that was acting as an angel of mercy. In another case, Blue Cross/Blue Shield targeted a doctor because they felt they were charging too much.

In Texas, a nurse was targeted after he reported on illegal drug testing. Finally, in Rhode Island a doctor was targeted after she reported on child abuse.

Yochanan, in a different thread, you asked how come evangelicals don't do kosher..

I just wanted to let you know I keep kosher...and I am evangelical.

I don't eat pork, shrimp, fish with no scales, crabs, and any other unclean animals...

I know many evangelicals with similar mindset like mine...we just do not talk about it...

But many company reps that I deal with who are Jewish and take us to dinners are amazed that I keep kosher. They wanted to know why and I tell them that I take the Scriptures seriously and G-d must have a good reason to say what He did..and medically speaking, there is excellent reason for it! Science plus Scriptures pushed me to being Kosher...who'd thunk of that ?

About keeping Sabbath holy, I had to tell my boss I could not work on Sabbath every week...I think he was not pleased at that...he put someone else on that duty but had to discontinue as it was not profitable...

Thought I would let you know that!

What do you think of the Omphalos Hypothesis?

There's only one thing we can do. (18+ / 0-)

Only one: pull our money out of the party--including from Obama. There needs to be a message sent, and these people only speak one language.

I've been a supporter of Obama's since the start, but I'm no dummy. Either he takes a stand on this or I'll be putting my money elsewhere.

A somewhat reasonable voice over there.

I just carried seven gallons of water out to the tomatoes on my patio.

This weather is bad for my back, but great for the plants.

I'm probably telling you something you already know, but...

splits in tomatoes are caused by too much water at once. Small waterings at frequent intervals yield nicer 'maters.

Drip irrigation works best of all. Container of water above the ground level with a length of cotton twine running from water to earth will suffice.

I saw this linked at junkscience:

Survey suggests research misconduct is common

"There's more misconduct, or potential for misconduct, out there than probably anyone has appreciated before. And a good part of that goes unreported," James Wells, director of the Office of Research Policy at the University of Wisconsin who helped conduct the survey, said in a telephone interview.

"Usually what happens is that somebody very close to the research has to observe this going on. And they have to step forward and report it to their institution in order for something to happen. And they can very often be jeopardizing themselves," added Wells.

Val: Why not write an editorial that says chaney sent you to niger and that you found no evidence that Saddam was seeking yellowcake?

Joe: Great idea. But if I'm going to tell a couple of lies in a NYT editorial, people might want to expose the truth.

Heh... global warming hoax played on the credulous media...

Remember Alan Sokal? He's the physicist who, in 1996, submitted an article to the postmodernist journal Social Text in which he claimed that "physical 'reality,' " including gravity, "is at bottom a social and linguistic construct." The whole thing was a hoax aimed at exposing postmodernism as fundamentally nonsensical.

It appears global warmism has found its Alan Sokal, a man named Tom Chalko. Our friends at NewsBusters.org note a story that appeared on both the CBS News Web site and MSNBC claiming that global warming causes the earth to move:

The research proves that destructive ability of earthquakes on Earth increases alarmingly fast and that this trend is set to continue, unless the problem of "global warming" is comprehensively and urgently addressed.
The analysis of more than 386,000 earthquakes between 1973 and 2007 recorded on the US Geological Survey database proved that the global annual energy of earthquakes on Earth began increasing very fast since 1990.
Dr. Chalko said that global seismic activity was increasing faster than any other global warming indicator on Earth and that this increase is extremely alarming.
CBS identified this as an Associated Press story before pulling it from its Web site (it's cached here). The story still appears at MSNBC.com, identified correctly as coming from Marketwire, a press-release wire.

This columnist lacks the scientific expertise to judge all of the various claims made on behalf of global warmism. So, however, do almost all other journalists. The Chalko hoax illustrates the journalistic mindset that prevails on this subject, which is to believe any claim, no matter how outlandish, about the dangers of global warming. Indeed, at least one journalist has gone so far as to liken skepticism about global warmism to Holocaust denial.

Can we believe anything we read about global warming when those who write it display such an extreme degree of credulity?

This week the KSA is hosting a big pow-wow over oil:

Oil market observers question whether very much can be done in Jeddah in the short-term to bring oil down.

British Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks said he wanted consumers and producers to at least agree on what was causing higher prices. That would facilitate a longer-term plan to address the price and future energy use.

"Lots of taps won't be turned on after Jeddah," he said. "But we don't want it to be a talking shop. Something substantial has to come out of it."

Here is the deal... if something substantial doesn't come out of this, will there be a bright green light Monday morning to run oil up over $140?

I was driving at the time. From many experts on LGF and my mechanic I got a "glancing blow" not a direct hit. I wouldn't be here if the lightning had actually hit the car but it was close enough. I saw a lot of blue light, heard a thunder roar like you wouldn't believe and my car stopped dead. It took me four cranks to get it re-started. I got it home last night but it had to be towed this morning because the alternator or maybe some of the other electrical components must have gotten fried. The first sign was on the way home when the radio was doing weird things and then cut out and the engine was revving up and down. I hope it's covered by insurance cause it looks like it's pretty major stuff.

Just wait until a customer walks in wearing the hijab. Let the seething begin...

After heists, banks tell customers to shed garb that may disguise them

By WENDY HUNDLEY / The Dallas Morning News
whundley@dallasnews.com

In an effort to deter robberies, a growing number of banks are making an unusual request of their customers: to remove hats, sunglasses and hoods that could disguise their appearances.

Such garb is the uniform of choice for many bank robbers, like the Scarecrow Bandit suspects who were recently apprehended in the Dallas area. The bandits got their name from the bright flannel shirts and floppy hats they initially wore during holdups.

Unlike those high-profile robberies, however, most bank heists are so low-key that customers and employees may not even know a crime is occurring, said Lewisville police Capt. Kevin Deaver...

Who exactly is this Dr. Tom Chalko? And how precisely are earthquakes related to global warming? The blog SansPretense has done a pretty thorough job dissecting Chalko's claims, as well as investigating some of Chalko's other "research." For example, Chalko contributes to a "scientific" journal that's ... not what many would consider scientific. It's called the NU Journal of Discovery -- the "NU" standing for Natural University. There's just one problem: There is no Natural University. Take a look at the "university's" website to see what I mean:

* NU is a University in which there are no professors, only Autonomous Individual Intellects that respect each other's Freedom of Choice.
* NU is a University in which everyone is a perpetual STUDENT and everyone learns from everyone else.
* NU is a University in which there are no secrets, no project is ever banned and information is always open for discussion for those who can comprehend it.
* NU is a University that accepts anyone who has enough motivation to develop his/her individual intellect, regardless of age, gender, nationality, belief system and social status.
* NU is a University in which the study of the limitations of the material reality will be only a part of exploring the Universal Law and the Purpose of Existence.
* NU is a University in which there is nothing to steal, simply because knowledge is given away free to start with.
* NU is a University that is nowhere in particular and yet everywhere on Earth.
* NU is a University that will never be referred to as a building or a business.
* NU is a University that will be impossible to close down.
* NU is a University in which the distribution of information will resemble the fractal distribution of the information in the entire Universe, so by studying any fragment in sufficient detail you can eventually learn the lot
* NU is a University whose Purpose precisely coincides with The Purpose of the entire Universe - maximizing the satisfaction from conscious existence.

re: #164 redheadredstate

Actually, the people at the Boston Museum of Science say a car is a safe place to be, because the lightening travels on the metal exterior of the car. (Yours isn't fiberglass, is it?) As long as you aren't touching metal that is connected to the outside, you should be OK.

The museum has a 1950's Van De Graff generator that once was a particle accelerator, but now gives great lightening demonstrations.

Yesterday my car gets hit by lighning today its 98 degrees with high humidity. That's Texas for you. The payoff is the winters where it stays in the 30-50 degree range most of the time.

What town are you in? We got a whopping .09" of rain yesterday in Wylie. Freakin' hot today.

They used to always say that in a lightning storm, you were safe in a car, as long as you didn't touch anything metal.

Just had a thunderstorm pass through and knocked out everything, I had a hell of a time getting everything back up, it was one of those blue light storms, nothing but noise and a sprinkle, I haven't had rain here in the Texas pasture for 7 weeks now, but at least it's cool now. LOL

I work near Saginaw, Texas and was on my way to work yesterday morning during the really bad lightning storms around 9ish in the morning. And you are right it's horribly hot but that's why they invented the air conditioner, thank goodness. It's a lovely climate controlled 75degrees in my office right now.

Globe & Mail, always eager to cheer on our own defeat in Af'stan, gets a little carried away;

The gleeful exaggeration at the G&M continued with the bloviating Jeffrey Simpson stuffing both feet in his mouth at once:

In Kandahar, a brilliantly executed attack on Sarpoza Provincial Prison liberated hundreds of Taliban fighters and common criminals. A few former prisoners were later rounded up, but most now are safely scattered around the province. Subsequently, the Taliban and its supporters captured whole villages near Kandahar. [my emphasis]

Whole villages, eh, Jeffrey? Care to tell us which ones? Come on: you're asserting it as a fact, right? In direct contradiction to a light colonel who's actually on the ground, going into Arghandab himself.

Reality smites them once again:

To the editors at the Globe & Mail:
Ahem:

The day began with rebels firing at Canadian, Afghan and international forces from the bushes across a river just outside the country's second-largest city.

It ended with coalition forces marching unopposed across the Arghandab district with their aircraft buzzing overhead, their missiles exploding into the ground and their opponents slinking back into obscurity.

"Where we want to go, we're going," said Col. Jamie Cade, deputy commander of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.

The eagerness with which the Globe & Mail pounces on the most obvious Taliban propaganda as fact is sickening. we all read about how the Taliban successfully freed a large number of their fighters from a prison in Kandahar, which looks bad on the Afghan Army. However, by the end of the week, most of those newly freed Taliban were lying dead in the Arghandab valley, which looks rather good on the Canadian army, if you ask me.

Their hearts must be breaking..

"I do not know whether a crime was committed by any of the administration officials who revealed Valerie Plame's identity to reporters," he said. "Nor do I know if there was an attempt by any person or persons to engage in a cover-up during the investigation. I do know that it was wrong to reveal her identity, because it compromised the effectiveness of a covert official for political reasons."
..
McClellan also also said he could not rule out that Cheney had ordered his former chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, to leak Plame Wilson's identity.

I bet he "could not rule out" that D.B.Cooper survived his 1971 airplane hijacking, or whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, either.

Please, anybody, explain where we learned anything new.

The person who wrote the cover operative law testified. Plame was classified not covert. In that simple sound syntax is a world of difference. The difference between nothing, and a crime.

A must read post at Belmont Club:

Israel Alone

...unilateral concessions that Olmert has made to Hamas; concessions to deep that even the State Department and the UN are aghast...

So if no one believes it will last, why bother? The overriding reasoning of the Israeli leaders behind the agreement to it is to show that their side everything possible has done to avoid bloodshed - so that when the war in Gaza - which is viewed as inevitable, occurs - the world will know that Israel did all it could.

That, in all its pathetic absurdity, is all that Olmert hopes to purchase at the certain cost of Israeli blood: a baring of the neck to the dagger so that when the "inevitable, occurs - the world will know that Israel did all it could". It's what the Peace Lobby calls 'confidence building'. But the confidence it builds is entirely of the wrong sort.

...Olmert will have probably have miscalculated . He will get weakness and he will reap war, but Israel will get no sympathy... Today what retreat and capitulation will bring from the capitals of the Old World is contempt.

There is always the danger, when electing appeasers into office, of assuming that when they go too far and overstep, the public will rise up and regain their senses. But that is to forget that each concession they provide the foe increases the cost of recovery until finally sheer hopelessness overcomes indignation.

Yep. Especially the last paragrpah. Israel thinks that if they do X the world will finally see their side. Then they do X and the world still hates them. Then a couple months/years later they try the stupidity again.

Did you see my 48?

206 Kenneth  Fri, Jun 20, 2008 1:26:30pm

re: #205 WrathofG-d

re: you #48... bloody typical.

One of the points in the Belmont article is that the Hudna ties Israel's hands in moving against terrorists in the West Bank, but it does not prevent Hamas from moving to take control of the West Bank from Fatah. If Hamas can keep control of their thugs for 6 months, thus giving Israel a pretext for "breaking" the hudna, Hamas will have won a strategic prize from Israel. The abominable Obama in office will further constrain Israel while encouraging Iran. Disaster.

207 WrathofG-d  Fri, Jun 20, 2008 1:31:48pm

re: #206 Kenneth

Yes, just as it was the last 7 or so times they tried this stupidity. Remember "the Disengagement"?

see my 17. They are still attacking Jews in Judea/Samaria.

Its idiotic. Hamas just needs to have their other armed wing (FATAH, IJ, PFLP, etc.) attack Israel from Judae/Samaria and the Terrorism continues, but Hamas has an out from retaliation.

re: #121 DeafDog

The whole valerie plame case is just stupid. The real culprit was her husband and herself. Can you imagine the discussion:

Val: Why not write an editorial that says chaney sent you to niger and that you found no evidence that Saddam was seeking yellowcake?

Joe: Great idea. But if I'm going to tell a couple of lies in a NYT editorial, people might want to expose the truth.

Val: Excellent! Then we can finally be in Vanity Fair like we always wanted.

If plame was a secret agent, she was the dumbest secret agent ever.

Sometimes it's far more dramatic to just walk away from former friends without saying another word.

Want to show your former friends just how wrong they really are? Finish your Auster project. His White Nationalist file dates back to the first AMREN conference in 1994.

But be fair with that project. Expose Austers published inconsistencies and multiple personality thought processes. Show the Auster who railed against Pat Buchanan on Frontpage (2004) alongside the Auster who in 2006 called all Black people "savages" and in 2007 defended European neo-nazi front groups. Show the Auster whose writing was once promoted by David Duke and is still promoted on Don Blacks storm front is the same Auster who, along with Ian Jobling, squabbled with Duke and Jared Taylor over the inclusion of Jews into the White Nationalist movement and their open Holocaust denial.
