ElBaradei Springs Into Action, Threatens to Quit

Fri, Jun 20, 2008 at 2:50:39 pm PDT

The United Nations’ blind, toothless nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, is threatening to quit his job as head of the IAEA if Iran is attacked.

That, of course, would be a tragedy.

DUBAI, June 20 (Reuters) - The chief of the United Nations nuclear watchdog said in remarks aired on Friday that he would resign if there was a military strike on Iran, warning that any such attack would turn the region into a “fireball”.

“What I see in Iran today is a current, grave and urgent danger. If a military strike is carried out against Iran at this time ... it would make me unable to continue my work...”

Israel Appears to Practice Iran Attack
By Robert Berger
Jerusalem
20 June 2008

Israel is reported to have carried out a large military exercise that could have been practice for an attack against Iran's nuclear facilities. Officials in Israel have refused to confirm or deny the report which appeared in The New York Times. Robert Berger reports from the VOA bureau in Jerusalem.

The New York Times reported Friday that more than 100 Israeli F-15 and F-16 warplanes staged a maneuver over the Mediterranean and Greece in the first week of June. The warplanes flew more than 1,400 kilometers, about the distance from Israel to Iran's nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz. Quoting U.S. officials, the report said the exercise included refueling in midair and helicopters capable of rescuing downed pilots.

And this from Best of the Web Today quoting ABC's story on the same:

"They cannot have an operation fail," said Baer, "and I don't think they will. They're the A-team of terrorism." . . .

Baer says his Hezbollah contacts told him an attack against the US was unlikely because Iran and Hezbollah did not want to give the Bush administration an excuse to attack.

Assuming Bear is right, everything changes if Barack Obama--who one suspects would look for an excuse not to attack--is elected president. Baer's information also implies that Iran, its theocratic ideology notwithstanding, is subject to deterrence--that it does act more restrained in the face of a credible threat of force.

Actually, that was clear more than a quarter century ago, when the Iranian regime released U.S. hostages immediately after the inauguration of that cowboy, President Reagan. Will Jan. 20, 2009, be Jan. 20, 1981, in reverse? Stay tuned.

US still favors diplomacy to settle Iran nuclear issue: envoy

21 June 2008 | 00:15 | FOCUS News Agency

New York. The US ambassador to the UN said Friday said Washington favored diplomacy in the Iranian nuclear crisis for now despite reports of Israeli preparations for a possible air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, AFP reported.

"We're in the phase of diplomacy, we want a diplomatic settlement of this issue," Zalmay Khalilzad told reporters when asked to react to media reports that recent military exercises by the Jewish state were a possible practice for a strike against Iran.
"I saw the article in paper today," Khalilzad said. "You know our view with regard to Iran, which is that it would be unacceptable for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons."

"Right now we are in the phase of diplomacy, that's what we are pushing for, we want a diplomatic solution to this problem. The ball is frankly in Iran's court," he added.

At least 100 people have died after USA planes bombed targets in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and the Benghazi region.
Around 66 American jets, some of them flying from British bases launched an attack at around 0100hrs on Monday.

The White House spokesman, Larry Speakes, has said that the strike was directed at key military sites but reports suggest that missiles also hit Bin Ashur, a densely populated suburb in the capital.

Colonel Muamar Gaddafi residential compound took a direct hit that killed Hanna Gaddafi, the adopted baby daughter of the Libyan leader.

Israel endorses McCain campaign

But the most important message is to the American political system. McCain has made a point of his willigness, even eagerness, to escalate the crisis with Iran. And while Barack Obama has said repeatedly that he won't take the threat of military action off the table, he's challenged McCain over the Arizonan's refusal to talk to Iran.

Most analysts do not believe that Israel has the capability to conduct an effective attack against Iran. It's too far away, its air defenses, while weak, aren't nil, and its facilities are too scattered and buried to be destroyed in the sort of attack that Israel might mount. So what does this mean?

Of course, Israel could strike Iran even in a limited way, do some damage to a limited number of Iran's nuclear facilities, and then sit back and watch the crisis unfold. Perhaps the Israelis might hope that Iran will strike back at American targets (say, in Iraq), and Israel might hope to draw the United States into a broader war with Iran. But I don't believe Iran would respond to an Israeli strike by attacking American targets, because that would be suicidal. So, if Israel acts alone, and Iran doesn't respond, Israel would suffer overwhelming world condemnation -- especially in light of the American National Intelligence Estimate saying that Iran halted its bomb-making five years ago. Israel would also be blamed by many friends and allies (say, India and Europe) for pushing oil prices toward $200 a barrel or more.

So it's most likely that Israel is hoping to push the post-Bush president of the United States into taking a more confrontational stance toward Iran.

Seems to me that what this creep is saying is that his job is to protect the Iranian nuke weapons program until they have fully operational nukes and anything that interferes with that program will prevent him from doing his job of buying time to protect the mullacracy's murderous program.

The bombshell was that the Bush Administration used propaganda to sell the War. I always thought that, that was PR as long as there was no willful lying.
Never mind! That was enough for the Gentleman from Florida. Mr Wexler & the Gentlelady from Texas, Sheila Jackson Lee to start drooling & call for the President's impeacment.

However , he has no altrnative plan.

Not one Democrat has the balls to admit publicly that their goal is $10 a gallon gasoline -- as a lever to remake the USA in a Socialist-environmentalist mold.

The Dems latest ruse for no offshore drilling is all the acres of oil leases the oil companies aren't drilling on, but the dumb shits don't even know that a lease doesn't necessarily mean there is oil in them thar hills, but only the lease holder has the right to explore the possibility there is oil, and if there is enough to make economic sense to drill there.

Well Barry, down here we have a saying that pretty much sums it up:
' Don't let the slammin' door hit you in the butt on your way out'.......

But Iran is peaceful. At least 'til Mahdi comes.
Maybe I should watch Dune tonight.

I like my mahdi-mahdi blackened. Never mind, I was thinkin' of fish.

Economically, Iran is a severely ill nation.

There is much anti-government sentiment in the population. The authorities keep the lid on through intimidation.

Iran is able to make trouble despite its illness because of easy money from petroleum.

I have a hunch that the resilliance of Iran's nuclear infrastructure against attack from the air is not that great, despite all the Iranian defensive measures.

I think air attacks could probably undo years of work in a day.

What happens after that? The story is that Iran replies with a large asymmetric warfare campaign, through surrogates, elsewhere.

Can the Iranian reply do any real damage?

Will the Iranian reply be deterred by fear of retalitation, once the cat is out of the bag for actual military operations against Iran?

Do the people in Iran rally around their government?

Does the Iranian government fall?

I really have no idea.

Wow, you mean in one stroke, we can not only de-fang a regime that has called us the great satan for over 30 years, but also get rid of el Baradei, too?

Well, shit, bomb the fuckers. Can't think of a better reason to do it.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, dickhead.

Oh, please do quit. Let's see, has El Baradai ever done anything constructive or worthwhile aside from enabling every terrorist regime on the planet to obtain nuclear secrets and plants?
In Iraq he was worthless. In Pakistan he was worthless. Iran laughs at him when ever he shows up. Gaddafi never even had to think twice about the toothless enablers that El Baradai leads.

If El Baradai quit then how would anyone know?

Israel could do a more than sufficient job, and permanently contaminate the sites. As well as target and eliminate the Iranian nuclear program staff.

Shaul Mofaz, former Defence Minister, who speaks Farsi, and whose family came from Iran, has been the de facto "communicator" to the Iranians.

The "Supreme Leader" of Iran is screaming in the press for good reason. They know the US and Europe have no stomach. They know 6 million dead Jews in the past makes Israel treat it differently.
