Stephanie Meyer has a new science fiction book out based on a type of invasion of the body snatchers scenario. The protagonist is the invader who has taken over the body and mind of a human, but the human personality won't completely bug out like she is supposed to. The alien finds herself strangely attracted to other humans.

Asimov wrote mostly boring scifi books, except to the uneducated masses without imagination (commercial choice there, I used his math books in High Schoo, which were good), but he was the subject of a really good book: The Flying Sorcerers by Niven and Gerrold (i believe).

The protagonist is the invader who has taken over the body and mind of a human, but the human personality won't completely bug out like she is supposed to. The alien finds herself strangely attracted to other humans.

The Host

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away.

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves—Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

"Stephenie Meyer is an amazing phenomenon—out of the brightness of her mind and spirit comes the illuminated darkness of her stories. For no matter how much pain her characters suffer, Meyer infuses the tales with light and hope." —Orson Scott Card, author of the Ender Saga

"Violence is the last resort of the incompetent."

Depends on the context, of course.

Hmmm. Could someone who carries out a violent plan of some sophistication be considered incompetent? As for the "inarticulate" version, it could be because they are beyond trying to talk to those who will never listen or stop what they are doing. Not because they can't say what they mean.
Not justifying violence, just poking holes in poorly thought out sayings.

The "Threat" of Creationism

The following essay was published in Science and Creationism (1984).

by Isaac Asimov

Scientists thought it was settled. The universe, they had decided, is about 20 billion years old, and Earth itself is 4.5 billion years old. Simple forms of life came into being more than three billion years ago, having formed spontaneously from nonliving matter. They grew more complex through slow evolutionary processes and the first hominid ancestors of humanity appeared more than four million years ago. Homo sapians itself—the present human species, people like you and me—has walked the earth for at least 50,000 years.

But apparently it isn't settled. There are Americans who believe that the earth is only about 6,000 years old; that human beings and all other species were brought into existence by a divine Creator as eternally separate variations of beings; and that there has been no evolutionary process.

...

We will inevitably recede into the backwater of civilization, and those nations that retain opened scientific thought will take over the leadership of the world and the cutting edge of human advancement. I don't suppose that the creationists really plan the decline of the United States, but their loudly expressed patriotism is as simpleminded as their "science." If they succeed, they will, in their folly, achieve the opposite of what they say they wish.

The book that hooked me on SF was Clarke's "The City and the Stars". My other sense of wonder faves are:

2001 Clarke again
Ringworld Niven
Mote in Gods Eye Niven & Pournelle
Benford's Galactic center series
Varley's "Titan" series
Brin's "Startide" books
Chalker's Well World books

There have been hundreds of others, but these fed my hope for a more facinating future than the one we will probably get.

There is a deeper side to Country also Concrete Angel Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue.

Posted so far tonight the escape from reality Country songs and now the ones that yanks our heads out of the sand. I like rock too just seems more one sided.

I hate to break the news to you, but rock and metal as you or I knew it is no more. Come on over to country music... old rockers never die... they just go country or come back home.

Don't have a link, but Neil Young "Old Ways" album and Back to the Country come to mind.

i called the cops last saturday night, when we got home about 0130 local.

there was a tricked out SUV parked across the street in a "no parking anytime" zone.

LAPD wanted to shuffle it off to LAFD, since the driver "might need medical assistance" (they were evidently passed out/sleeping).

parking enforcement said it wasn't theirs because someone was in the car and i should contact the PD or FD.

LAFD wanted to know if i'd tried to contact said occupant, as the other departments had.

then they all got REALLY! upset when i told them to hang on while i got a gun and a flashlight so i could do their j*b for them, but they'd better come quick if i had to shoot some moron....

seems i couldn't do that, but not one part of the local government was interested in an illegally parked vehicle with an apparently impaired driver....... it disappeared about 0300.

and they wonder why no one bothers to get involved.

This is really innovative. A major breakthrough in solar cell technology by a company called Nanosolar! Nanosolar's breakthrough technology finally makes solar cell technology competitive with fossil fuel technology:

Nanosolar are selling their ultra-thin film solar panels for a mere 90 cents p/watt. Their production costs, said to be 30 cents p/watt, make this a very profitable enterprise, and one that begins to really compete with traditional dirty fossil fuel energy options:

Cost has always been the burdening factor weighing down the mass application of solar technology at nearly $3 per watt. In order to compete with the energy produced from coal solar has been in need of finding a way to shrink its costs down to $1 per watt. Nanosolar's cells use absolutely no silicon as is the standard for current solar production and the efficiency of the PowerSheet cells are competitive with the traditional systems as well. The golden kicker, the cost to produce these solar coatings is a mere 30 cents per watt! - ENN
There will be enormous demand, so don't expect this price to come down much further in the short term. But, if Nanosolar can get...

If this new solar cell technology is as good as it reads, then in a couple of years solar power may become a practical, viable alternative to what we've got now. Awesome! :)

Nah, rock is alive and well. Honestly, I like it better now that it's recovered from the Grunge stage (which was good in it's own way, but I think they're getting back to basics again...). :)

I really like this, and this. Seether and Disturbed are good, also. Did you know that Iron Maiden is still touring? I'd looove to go see them.

To me, country is getting completely crappy again. In the early 90s, popular country finally got out of it's bubblegum/pop/mainstream rut and went back to it's roots. There were always those that kept doing it right, like George Strait, Merle Haggard, and George Jones- but the radio played total crap starting in the late 70s. And now they're doing it again, with Carrie Underwood type junk. Give me Bocephus, any day. ;)

Italy: Criminal court drops case against US soldier

Rome, 20 June (AKI) - An American soldier who killed an Italian agent in Iraq will not be tried in Italy, the country's top criminal court has ruled.

The Court of Cassation in Rome late on Thursday upheld an earlier ruling to drop a murder case against Mario Lozano, who shot dead Italian agent Nicola Calipari at a checkpoint outside Baghdad on 4 March 2005.

Calipari and another Italian agent were accompanying newly freed Italian hostage Giuliana Sgrena to Baghdad airport when their vehicle came under fire.

Italy: Criminal court drops case against US soldier

Mr. DT's partner was a guard at the Bagdad airport, part of a contractor contingency. Out of 125 guys he left home with, only 5 of them came back. When he got on the plane he had someone's blood splashed all over him. The military put the contractors out in a ring around them, so the bad guys got to the contractors first.

These guards and soldiers that manned checkpoints were so brave. Remember all the checkpoint soldiers that got blown up. What a nightmare that was.

Makes our overnight "adventure" look small. "Someone" - and I say that lightly - ate cake with fudge frosting directly from the cake dish without bothering to use the knife to cut themselves a piece. The cake looks quite strange.

The dog does not like banana. I refused to give her any of the talapia with a spicy Thai sauce we had for dinner and wouldn't give her cake either. Apparently she threw herself a picnic after I went to bed, because the paper plates from dinner have been removed from the trash and are remarkably clean. And of course there is the cake. She did eat only a reasonably sized piece of the thing, but I do wish she would learn to use a knife.

While the Environmentalists weep:

"DRILL NOW!"

Members of Congress were swamped by telephone calls and e-mail messages Thursday demanding, "Drill now!" in response to a Republican call for increased American oil production to fight runaway gasoline prices.

Lawmakers got little response to previous proposals intended to lower the cost of oil: alternative energy sources, a federal gasoline tax holiday, an excess profits tax on U.S. oil producers and pressure on foreign oil producers. In contrast, the demand to "drill now" (first urged this year by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich) has taken hold.

A footnote: A challenge to his House colleagues by Republican Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia to sign a letter pledging that "I will vote to increase U.S. oil production to lower gas prices for Americans" began Thursday morning with 72 signatures and by mid-afternoon had reached 152. Only one was a Democrat: Neal Abercrombie of Hawaii, which has especially high gasoline prices. Signatures also were mounting on two petitions to force Democratic-controlled committees to send to the House floor two mandatory oil-drilling bills.

DT could go with "just the facts."

DT: (gently) I have some really bad news. I woke up and found the bird dead.

9YO: What happened?

DT: I'm not sure. I'm so sorry to tell you this.

Now if the kid specifically asks, "Did the dog have anything to do with it?" the fact that the cage was on the floor would have to be confessed.

I agree with GG that lying to kids is not a good option, but if DT already has gone with her story, perhaps she could sit 9YO and admit the truth, explaining she knew how upset 9YO would be and was trying to protect him--but that she realized that long-term trust was more important than short-term pain.

Fifteen people in hospital after blast in southeast Moscow

MOSCOW, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - Fifteen people were hospitalized, including five of them in serious condition, after a self-made explosive device went off in southeast Moscow overnight, police said on Saturday.

The explosion occurred at about 2 a.m. after a Euro 2008 quarterfinal game between Turkey and Croatia, when young people were having beer near a food store. Police suggested the blast occurred through the casual handling of explosives.

Initial reports said 17 people, most of them residents of a nearby hostel, were injured. Five of them suffered fragment wounds and leg fractures.

"Fifteen are remaining in hospital... Police have launched investigation into the illegal use of explosives," a police official said.

"Witnesses said no conflicts had occurred before the explosion, which suggests the casual handling of explosive as a cause of the blast," the official said.

Hey, when we were teenagers we all made our own explosives and played with them on the street, no?
