You don't want to be descended from cats. Watch Red Dwarf if they are still playing it on TV anywhere...it used to be on PBS in Houston, with all the other Brit comedies.

That was a great show. The cat (looked like a metrosexual with fangs) was what a cat would be like if it were people size. It had to play with its food - throwing a piece of chicken around so it could catch it before eating it.
If the show is on, watch it.

Along the same vein, I've done a lot of reading on Edgar Allen Poe, he fascinates me. He was not well liked while living and all he wanted was recognition. Bet he would be thrilled to know a football team was named after one of his creations.

Army ‘vacuum’ missile hits Taliban

British forces in Afghanistan have used one of the world’s most deadly and controversial missiles to fight the Taliban.

Apache attack helicopters have fired the thermobaric weapons against fighters in buildings and caves, to create a pressure wave which sucks the air out of victims, shreds their internal organs and crushes their bodies.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted to the use of the weapons, condemned by human rights groups as “brutal”, on several occasions, including against a cave complex.

The use of the Hellfire AGM-114N weapons has been deemed so successful they will now be fired from RAF Reaper unmanned drones controlled by “pilots” at Creech air force base in Nevada, an MoD spokesman added.

In the modern media world, there's really no way for someone to be quite the star that Twain was to the 19th Century. Twain's standard is one that a lot of American writers aspire to, though. If you were somehow able to combine the literary talents of Garrison Keillor and P.J. O'Rourke, you'd get fairly close.

Redheads are an anesthesiologists worst nightmare.

That could explain why I woke up during foot surgery. The docs were cracking jokes. I laughed, then noticed that the cute little Chinese anesthesiologist was hovering over me, watching me like a hawk. Luckily, he didn't knock me out again.

I live in an area that trends toward redneck. Sometimes we see things and have to say - you might be a redneck. For instance, at the church across the street we had a funeral procession a few days ago. Not so odd you say? It was made up entirely of tractors.

I'd file that with "if you've ever burped while delivering a eulogy", yeah.

Yeah, unfortunately, there hasn't been a real big demand for artillery lately. But there is a big demand for infantry. So a lot of MOS's, Military Police, Artillery, and ADA, for example, are doing traditional infantry missions. Before you get too worried, either MOS is a good way to go, and I always felt safer as an infantry officer walking "the mean streets" than I would as some sort of logistical support type out on the road ferrying supplies. At least the guys I am surrounded by are trained killers and know how to react on contact. Artillery, scouts, they are all combat arms types and react well in combat. I think your son will be fine. Now if only he can get himself into the 101st...

I have a couple friends who are MPs, definitely good guys...however, I have a funny story about MPs, purely anecdotal, and not meant to paint the entire branch with a broad stroke. JRTC rotation in early 2002...I was a 2LT infantry platoon leader. My platoon was tasked with perimeter security for the Brigade TOC. One day near the end of 21 days in the box, we came under attack. My platoon returned fire, I sprinted from hole to hole, adjusting fires and what not. As I was adjusting one of our 240s, an MP humvee with a turret mounted 249 rolled out the gate. It was outside the wire, no more than 200 meters away when it was overwhelmed by insurgents and stolen by insurgents. They went out there alone, I couldn't believe my eyes. No coordination or anything. Well long story slightly shorter, we took out the humvee with an AT4. MPs, man, you gotta love em.

re: #90 Behead Me Bob

Redheads are an anesthesiologists worst nightmare.

Please elaborate!

I've read that redheads experience more pain and need stronger pain medication. This is certainly true in my case.

Every time I see a new dentist in my regular dentist's practice for a dental emergency (he employs a few dentists), I tell him (or her) that I need extra freezing. Every time, they don't believe me. They give me one needle, then leave me alone for 10 minutes, come back and start working. I scream, they give me a second needle, go away, come back and start working. I moan and gesticulate wildly, they finally bring out the mega-dose, sock it to me, give me 10 more minutes, then finally start working.

It always takes the first experience of them wasting 30 precious minutes before they'll believe me. The second time, they give me all the freezing that'll fit in the first needle.

The dentist who owns the practice knows me best. He freezes my entire face (and it stays that way for about four hours) for any work. Even my nose and forehead are frozen. He's the best.

I don't respond well to adrenaline, either. It's in large red letters on the front of my file and each new dentist gives me adrenaline in my freezing. I react badly to a tiny amount of adrenaline.

I dread having to use my Epi-pen (although I will if I need it). One dentist told me that, if I have to use the Epi-pen: "It'll save your life but you'll probably have a heart attack."

I hope he was wrong about the heart attack!

BTW...if your son decides to take college classes while in the military, ensure he uses tuition assistance (TA) while on active duty. It is free money. Well, not free, its tax money, but it won't cut into his GI Bill. TA is not advertised so much, so I want to point that out to you. Also, congratulations to your son, the army is not the easiest job out there, but it is a good one. I've done two rotations in Iraq so far, I've come back unscathed both times.

Furthermore I'm not surprised that the BHO campaign is passing out fake "homemade" signs.

But then I remember the Soviets would stage demonstrations with schoolchildren in Moscow protesting the deployment of US/NATO nuclear weapons in Europe.

How about Saddam Hussein's "spontaneous" parades protesting the deaths of innocent babies "because of UN sanctions"?

Or the "spontaneous" protests against the Mohammed cartoons?

Lemme tell ya man. During DS the medevacs were sittin' on our asses, then they swapped us over to triage/transport of EPWs. We were effing steppin and fetchin'! When we dusted Falaka Island we had a load of MP goons in the first bird after the Kiowas , they cleared the LZ. Glad they were there. Then we were assigned to a clearing company and we converted to a 5 man flight crew (1 MP) to taxi EPWs to the tx CASH in the middle of the desert. Ya gotta love the wreckless disregard for their own safety!

Well, I convinced my boy who is joining the Army to go in as a 13B (Artillery) instead of a 19D (Recon Scout).....whatever keeps him from the mean streets of Falluja works with me.

shoot-N-scoot

Well my fellow american..my son just returned from falluja as a squad leader of the 3/5 marines, kilo company, first platoon...
Shout out to sgt. howe that kept our son safe for 7 months.
He is going to be deployed again in jan.
Our whole family..was on hand when the 3/5th marines returned to Camp pendleton..It was really a great scene..3:30am and thousands of people screaming like a colts game.
They Colonal guy or whoever was the main dude got on a mic and said that the 3/5 marines did not suffer a single casuality and everyone that departed from you has returned to you at this paradeground.. The cheering was deafening and we hugged out jordan all night..
BTW.. there is no army anywhere near falluja.. it is strickly owned by the marines..Also.. My son introduced me to this marine that got the bronze star given to him in person by Bush..
what an honor..He is already out of the marines but came to camp p to see his friends came home..I'll email jordan but i can't remember his name.. He carried a bunch of marines to safety under fire during the original falluja firefight..I got about 10 pictures taken with him...

This has probably been posted on some previous thread, but bears greater exposure.

And let me remind you of the “Media Statement” that Tiger put out years ago. He did this in order to “explain my heritage.” And he said it would be “the final and only comment I will make regarding the issue”:

My parents have taught me to always be proud of my ethnic background. Please rest assured that is, and always will be, the case . . . On my father’s side, I am African-American. On my mother’s side, I am Thai. Truthfully, I feel very fortunate, and EQUALLY PROUD, to be both African-American and Asian!

The critical and fundamental point is that ethnic background and/or composition should NOT make a difference. It does NOT make a difference to me. The bottom line is that I am an American . . . and proud of it! That is who I am and what I am. Now, with your cooperation, I hope I can just be a golfer and a human being.

When I was in elementary school, one of my classmates had bright red hair and so did all of her brothers and sisters! I never met her parents but I'm guessing they must have had red hair, as well.

I didn't notice the hooked noses in the Harry Potter books. Who had them?

(My husband read most of the Harry Potter books aloud to our daughter and I listened in.)

Anybody Rowling didn't like. I've been on an HP chat for 4 years and we all winced at that bit about tears dropping off Snape's "hooked nose".

The first thing that came to mind was to suggest that you send a copy of the 25 point program of the NSDAP and suggest that they compare it to their own party's platform.

But that would go over their heads.

solomonpanting (#261),

The critical and fundamental point is that ethnic background and/or composition should NOT make a difference. It does NOT make a difference to me. The bottom line is that I am an American . . . and proud of it! That is who I am and what I am. Now, with your cooperation, I hope I can just be a golfer(politician) and a human being.

{loppyd} Darling girl! *mwah*

Not much new and exciting except I've finally solved Lil Miss' awful allergy problem. The poor thing. I'd come home from work to find monster clumps of her fur on the carpet and she'd hide under the ugly sofa whimpering because her skin was raw, itchy and tacky to the touch not to mention hot as hades.

Not. One. Bad. Scratch. This. Year.

And her fur is luxurious, her eyes are brighter, she's loaded with energy and she's an all-round happier yorkie that she was a year ago.

The vast majority of the fans loved HPDH, but a minority of us were disappointed. Rowling was totally enamored of Harry by then to the point of identifying him with her husband and it showed. The moral standing of characters seemed to depend on how much they Loved Harry. Snape acted very heroically over that last year at HW but was treated like roadkill. Dumbledore turned out to have size 15 feet of clay but all was forgiven when he shed a tear and told Harry how wonderful he was.

Basically, we were being totally obsessively picky...

Well, here's a start: If it's not okay to shop at Wal-Mart, it's not okay to shop at any transnational chain (my aunt and uncle are big Costco shoppers; fucking hypocrites). AIDS and breast cancer will be cured if there's a Democrat in the White House? Then why didn't Clinton find cures? Little Caitlin's class size is too big? Blame the liberal SCOTUS justices who decided that American taxpayers have to pick up the tab for illegal aliens' education (Plyler v Doe). Separate but equal? Ever hear of Brown v Board of Education? And wasn't it a Republican (Eisenhower) who issued an executive order to desegregate the public schools?

Ah, what's the use?
