Our Friends the Saudis

Wed, Jun 25, 2008 at 1:35:59 pm PDT

Saudi Arabia announced today that they have arrested 520 people for terrorism. Of course, when they use the word “terrorism” it could mean almost anything, from mass murder to publishing cartoons.

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has detained 520 people suspected of being involved in terrorism, state television reported on Wednesday.

UPDATE at 6/25/08 1:53:31 pm:

They may have included these among the “terrorists:” Dozens arrested in Saudi “gay” raid.

Religious police in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have detained more than 20 men after a raid on a property in the coastal town of Qatif.

Newspaper Al-Medina reports that quantities of alcohol were seized at a gathering of young men and that many more were initially arrested on homosexuality charges but later released. 21 remain in custody.

The state Commission for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice was acting on a tip off.

I guess this is better than a news story saying that Saudi Arabia released 520 people accused of terrorism /glass half full...

Then again, that particular kind of story is reserved for Yemen, which specializes in terrorist releases.

Given that their definition of "peace" is indistinguishable from a rational definition of subjugation, plunder, and mass murder, there are certainly grounds to believe that their definition of "terrorism" could be a bit slippery.

I know exactly what it means. It means "people who don't like the House of Saud." That could range from Al Qaeda terrorists to democracy reformers to feminists to communists and beyond.

Even countless centuries ago, the (pre-Islamic) Arabs served as the middlemen between the Han Chinese empire in the East and the Roman Empire in the West, transporting silk, porcelain and other goods along the Silk Road. It becames so lucrative that these long-distance middlemen began to grow wealthy. Rivalries erupted and caravan raids became commonplace. When we read that Mohammed and his early followers has conflicts with "the merchants and traders," we can see that at the root of Islam are economic hardball tactics. Islam as a movement is essential history's largest caravan raid. Mohammed went for the whole ball of wax -- and got it. (Well, his successors got it.)

And here we are, millennia later, and the Arabs are still playing off the Chinese against the Western powers.

Amazing how some things NEVER change.

If we could get a House and Senate to support such a position in some non-binding fashion, you'd see the price of crude begin to drop into a range that made some sense. Saying a lot of the things that have been said and are going to be said on on this thread are more than sufficient to get one arrested for any number of things in the Magic Kingdom. Advocating governance by anyone who is not a member of the House of Saud or who is the wrong member of the House of Saud is a real good way to run afoul of the authorities. One really great thing about their system of justice though, everybody who receives a sentence has confessed to a crime, and they really do know how to get a confession.

OK, this is getting ridiculous. My internet connection speed over the last few weeks has gotten noticeably slower. It's happening right now.

Is Comcast already throttling the bandwidth of heavy users? Or is it just a pilot program somewhere? Or is it simply a plan for the future?

Because, to me, it feels like it's happening right now. Things at first are speedy as hell, and then after a bunch of YouTube watchings, software downloads and zombietime ftp-ing, the speed suddenly drops noticeably. Then, after a few hours -- back to fast again.

What is going on? Is this all psychosomatic? Or is Comcast really turning down the spigot when they detect too much bandwidth been sucked up?

I don't really ever do p2p file-sharing (who are supposedly the people Comcast and AT&T are targeting), so that can't be it.

re: #93 zombie

"Saudi", the name we all used for him, simply sat and smiled, and smiled. He said nothing and nothing was said to him though it took my all not to knock him smartly in the nose.

Hey, I'm about to buy a cheap comfort bike I can use for local errands and not be too upset if somebody cuts the cable and lifts it. Looking at the Schwinn Voyageur right now...

That looks as good as anything else in its price range. Or I should say "they," there are a few different versions. I'm still peeved at Schwinn for going to the mass-market channel and almost putting me out of business:

On September 11, 2001, Pacific Cycle, the nation's largest importer of quality bicycles, purchased the Schwinn/GT Corporation out of bankruptcy court, and united the two brands with the company's other "quality" [scare quotes added] lines like Mongoose, Mongoose Pro, Roadmaster and Pacific.

It was a combination of factors that hurt me, though, including my own lack of business skills. I used to be quite a Schwinn-o-phile. I still have my Anniversary-year-issue [1995] Schwinn mountain bike, which I use now as you are planning to do with your new acquisition.

The alternate I would suggest as a comparison is a Redline R510 or R520. Test ride before you buy!

Saudi Marriage Official Says 1-Year-Old Brides OK

Wednesday, June 25, 2008 (FOX News)

Call it marriage, Islamic style.

Saudi marriage officiant Dr. Ahmad al-Mu’bi told Lebanese television viewers last week that it’s permissible for girls as young as 1 to marry — as long as sex is postponed.

Al-Mu’bi’s remarkable comments also included an explanation that “there is no minimal age for entering marriage.”

“You can have a marriage contract even with a 1-year-old girl, not to mention a girl of 9, 7 or 8,” he said. “But is the girl ready for sex or not?” What is the appropriate age for sex for the first time? This varies according to environment and tradition,” al-Mu’bi said.

I call it Islam LCF (lowest common factor).
