 RetweetBreaking: Al-Arian Indicted for Contempt

Thu, Jun 26, 2008 at 2:28:37 pm PDT

Just announced at the Investigative Project: Al-Arian Indicted for Contempt.

Convicted terrorist Sami Al-Arian has been indicted in Virginia on two counts of criminal contempt after refusing to testify before a federal grand jury despite a grant of immunity.

Al-Arian, who pled guilty in 2006 to conspiring to provide goods and services to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, has argued that his plea agreement ruled out any cooperation with the government. Two appellate courts, the 4th Circuit and 11th Circuit have rejected that argument, saying no such agreement is in the written plea and was not uttered during Al-Arian’s plea hearing.

The indictment offers few details, except to give Oct. 16, 2007 and March 20, 2008 as the dates of his alleged criminal contempt. The grand jury’s focus is believed to be on terror financing by the Herndon, Va.-based International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).

IIIT was the single biggest donor for Al-Arian’s Tampa-based think tank, the World and Islam Studies Enterprise (WISE). The president of IIIT Al-Arian wrote a letter in 1992 referring to WISE as an extension of IIIT.

On a related note, Al-Arian's daughter is collaborating on a book with that scumbag Chris Hedges.

Chris Hedges and Laila Al-Arian on “Collateral Damage: America’s War Against Iraqi Civilians”

Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Senior Fellow at the Nation Institute. He was the former Middle East Bureau Chief of the New York Times. He is the author of several books, including War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning and American Fascists. His latest book is Collateral Damage: America’s War Against Iraqi Civilians.

Laila Al-Arian, Freelance journalist who has written for several publications including USA Today, The Nation magazine, HuffingtonPost.com, and the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. She is the co-author of Collateral Damage: America’s War Against Iraqi Civilians.

...

AMY GOODMAN: Finally, the book is dedicated, Laila, to your dad, to Dr. Sami Al-Arian, who’s been jailed in this country for more than five years, has been on two extended hunger strikes. Can you give us an update on his situation?

LAILA AL-ARIAN: Well, Amy, the update on my father’s case is that we’re still waiting to see where the government will proceed in his case. His time that he served has technically run out. He should have been deported, released and allowed to rejoin his family months ago, back in April, should have been the final date. We now fear that the government is getting ready to charge him with criminal contempt for—after trying to force him to testify in a completely separate case. So what we fear is that they’re going to try to exact revenge and retribution for his acquittal more than two-and-a-half years ago by keeping him in jail for God knows how long. And we’re just hoping and praying that they’ll do the right thing and release him now, months after he was supposed to have been released.

AMY GOODMAN: Where is he now?

LAILA AL-ARIAN: He’s now in Portsmouth, Virginia, near Virginia Beach. And again—

AMY GOODMAN: And what is it that gives you hope at this point?

LAILA AL-ARIAN: Honestly, just looking at the facts rationally and past precedent. What they’ve done to him for the past two-and-a-half years, it’s hard to keep hope. But our hope and faith is in God and all the support that we’ve received, not just all over the country, but all over the world.

Collateral Damage: America’s War Against Iraqi Civilians

They probably should look up collateral before going too far with that argument that the war is against civilians.

/helpful hint

While they're researching, they could also look up how many civilians died of collateral damage compared to how many dead civilians were targeted by the sonsabitches that we are trying to stop.

OT: Islamist refuses to accept an award from a woman, claims Islamophobia for not getting the award anyways...
Somali Muslim humiliated for simply following his religion

Alinoor Ahmed Sheikh, a Somali asylum seeker based in Co. Kerry, had been selected for the accolade by the judging panel of the Africa Centre’s annual World Refugee Day awards, due to his work with the Kerry Volunteer Centre and as a fundraiser for Amnesty International.

He respectfully informed organisers prior to the ceremony that he was a practising Muslim and therefore would be unable to shake hands with the female presenter. According to the Irish newspaper Metro Eireann, the organisers had accepted his request and had promised Sheikh that there would be “no problem”.

However, Sheikh – who had been writing notes for his acceptance speech during the ceremony – was left stunned when another person’s name was announced as the winner. He said this treatment had left him aggrieved.
...
Later, Sheikh inquired as to why this happend and was told it was because he refused to shake hands.

The Waiting Room

This is so true! They always ask at the doctor's office why you are there, and you have to answer in front of others what's wrong and sometimes it is embarrassing.
There's nothing worse than a receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you in a room full of other patients. Many of us have experienced this, and I love the way this old guy handled it.

An 86-year-old man walked into a crowded waiting room and approached the desk. The receptionist said, 'Hello, sir. Can you please tell me why you're here to see the doctor today?'

'There's something wrong with my dick,' he replied.

The receptionist became irritated and said, 'You shouldn't come into a crowded waiting room and say things like that.'

'Why not? You asked me what was wrong and I told you,' he said.

The receptionist replied, 'Now you've caused some embarrassment in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and discussed the problem further with the doctor in private.'

The man replied, 'You shouldn't ask people questions in a room full of strangers, if the answer could embarrass anyone.' The man walked out, waited several minutes and then re-entered .

The receptionist smiled smugly and asked, 'Yes?'

'There's something wrong with my ear,' he stated.

The receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice. 'And what is wrong with your ear, sir?'

'I can't piss out of it,' he replied.

The waiting room erupted in laughter.

My wife is a Physical Therapist. Where she works it's completely paper, and she spends hours on the paper work. Her employer is big on measuring productivity, patient contact hours. Yet they absolutely refuse to look at electronic record keeping because of HIPPA. Not realizing systems can meet HIPPA and literally save hours a day in documentation, free up more time for patient contact.

They actually get angry when you ask for a release authorization.

Many actually think it is the medical provider doing it, and would never dream it is federal law.

I deal with it as a teacher--we have to be very careful to protect student confidentiality.

We have connectivity to the hospitals with respect to the test result, and documents such as operative reports. What is really sweet, is PACS.

Having the ability to just get on the net, log in, and actually see an x-ray without having to travel to the hospital is killer.

I've seen tablet PCs, RFID tags in patient bracelets, car giving walks in, taps a button and the patient file loads based on the RFID tag. Procedures are one tap and entered, all on a secured network. Change orders, and alerts propagate automatically.

Not surprising to me:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Flabbergasted" NASA scientists said on Thursday that Martian soil appeared to contain the requirements to support life, although more work would be needed to prove it.

Scientists working on the Phoenix Mars Lander mission, which has already found ice on the planet, said preliminary analysis by the lander's instruments on a sample of soil scooped up by the spacecraft's robotic arm had shown it to be much more alkaline than expected.

"We basically have found what appears to be the requirements, the nutrients, to support life whether past present or future," Sam Kounaves, the lead investigator for the wet chemistry laboratory on Phoenix, told journalists. [Link: www.reuters.com...]

If there is ice on Mars, then there must be water. If the composition of water is two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen, then there is oxygen on Mars. We now know there is water, and oxygen, and potable soil. Let's fire that sucker back up again.

OT

Howie dean is asking for money from the little people:

Dear Name,

As of this month, the Democratic National Committee no longer accepts donations from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs.

We're joining the campaign of our presumptive nominee, Barack Obama, in setting a new standard for a people-powered politics.

Unlike John McCain and the Republican National Committee, we will not allow Washington lobbyists or PACs to control our campaigns, manipulate our candidates, or drown out the views of the American people.

But we face a crucial financial reporting deadline on Monday night, which will be the first test of the financial consequences of this decision.

Please make a donation of $25 now to show that our party is at its best when it's powered by ordinary people giving whatever they can afford:

[Link: donate.barackobama.com...]

Your support of our 50-state strategy has helped create the opportunity for Barack Obama to run a true 50-state campaign -- but we need your help.

We have our work cut out for us.

John McCain and the Republican National Committee had a three-month head start on the general election, and they raised nearly $45 million last month alone.

Over the past three years, we've worked tirelessly to build our party from the ground up in all 50 states.

Now, for the first time in a generation, a presidential campaign is putting staff in all 50 states so Democrats across the country can compete in races up and down the ballot.

And that campaign, and the national party supporting it, are refusing contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs.

We'll need unprecedented resources to build our operation in every state -- and we'll need them at the same time we're cutting ourselves off from a major fundraising source campaigns usually rely on.

It's essential that we get started now.

A dollar you give today will do more and have more of an impact than a dollar you give in October or November.

Your donation before the June 30th deadline will help us grow our party in all 50 states at this crucial early stage. Make a $25 donation now:

[Link: donate.barackobama.com...]

Refusing contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs was a risky decision, but it was the right thing to do.

Just a couple of years ago, many people thought it would be impossible to expand the political map and compete in all 50 states. But because of you and the millions of supporters like you across the country, it's happening right now.

At this moment, we have a historic opportunity to prove that a movement of ordinary people has the power to do what few thought possible: change the way political campaigns are funded.

John McCain and the Republican National Committee are running their campaign the old-fashioned way -- and they're already raising huge sums of money thanks to John McCain's three-month head start.

People will be watching our June fundraising numbers closely to see if we can pull this off. We need your help before the financial reporting deadline on Monday to show them we can do it.

Make your donation of $25 before the June 30th deadline to help our candidates in all 50 states and start changing politics in America:

[Link: donate.barackobama.com...]

Thank you for your support,

Howard Dean

I love this comment :

Right now, the US military is trying to drastically down-size the capacity of a smart bomb to avoid "collateral" damage a 1000 pounder or even a five hundred pounder that tears up everything for a block. There are several 250 pound models of smart bombs coming into service, and every one loves them, but is hoping for something even smaller. Smart bombs have truly revolutionized warfare. In the past to "pacify" an urban resistance took lots of people and fire power, with resulting huge civilian casualties. The US military is writing the book on the use of precision weapons. 167 Tigger2005  Thu, Jun 26, 2008 5:38:04pm

Lizards, I'm in a rotten mood tonight.

Even though I'm not a very religious person, I work for a "New Thought" (similar to Divine Science) prayer ministry and have for a long time because I enjoy the work and the people. For most of this time, politics have not been an issue in the work. However, in recent years there has been an influx of liberals and liberal attitudes (as is the case in so many other churches).

For many years this ministry has had an annual day of prayer for world peace. This year, they've decided to extend the celebration ten days, to end with the "International Day of Peace" on Sept. 21. When I read the description of this event, I was immediately concerned that it was going to degenerate into moonbattery. Now, it looks like I was right. On the Web site for this event, in the links section, we have this:

These are organizations that have been identified as potential partners for events and activities as well as resources for your own community.

And here are some of those organizations:

Interfaith Groups & Resources
Abraham Path Initiative - The Abraham Path will become a place of meeting — inspiring respect and building friendship between people of different faiths and cultures.

Amnesty International - A worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all.
American Ethical Union - Ethical Culture is a humanistic religious and educational movement inspired by the ideal that the supreme aim of human life is working to create a more humane society.

Another Mother for Peace - Another Mother for Peace is a non-profit, non-partisan association dedicated to eliminating the use of war as a means of solving disputes among nations, people and ideologies.

Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education - Dedicated to the multidisciplinary study of violence that leads to scientifically based violence prevention programs and widely applicable violence prevention policy.

Business for Social Responsibility - Through advisory services, convening's and research, BSR works with corporations and concerned stakeholders of all types to create a more just and sustainable global economy.

The Center for Nonviolent Communication - A global organization helping people connect compassionately with themselves and one another through Nonviolent Communication language, created by Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D.

Code Pink - People who want to influence a shift in the focus of world society and governments from militarism to life affirming endeavors.

Communities of Peace Foundation - Our mission is to provide a format for people to identify themselves as peacemakers at the earliest possible age, a means to evoke each person's intrinsic nature, and a platform for participants to contribute their unique positive contributions of peace into the community.

The Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions strives to cultivate harmony among the world's religious and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its other guiding institutions in order to achieve a peaceful, just, and sustainable world.

Department of Peace - Our goal is to take the field of peace building from the margins of the political and societal dialogue and bring it to its rightful place: Central to our policymaking, investment and understanding.

Earthstewards Network - The Earthstewards Network is a nonprofit international organization devoted to bringing positive change to our planet through the grassroots efforts of people like you.

Fellowship of Reconciliation - We are an interfaith organization committed to active nonviolence as a transforming way of life and as a means of radical change.

Great going guys, you make us proud...

I'm sort of hoping for the truly personalized ordnance. Fired from about 50,000 ft, it neatly burrows into Achmed The Terrorist's turban where it promptly unleashes 1oz of high explosive mayhem. Collateral damage will be limited to about 100 or so close lying, dung hugging fruit flies left to deal with a somewhat disorienting *pop*.

Ha. Well, look, we have 250 pound cement bombs, do all their damage with kinetic energy. Blech. Hellfire missiles have tiny warheads, on the order of five pounds, and they get the job done. New DAGR missiles are about a third the size.

In ten years we'll have insect-sized robots that can fly up someone's nose and set off one milligram of boom where it will do the most good, will that be precise enough?

I just liked this:

Fed policies under Greenspan, Eveillard says, precipitated "one bubble after another" -- from the implosion of technology stocks in the late 1990s to the recent real-estate price collapse and the related financial-services industry meltdown.
...
"When financial history is written five or 10 years down the road," he added, "Greenspan will be seen as the worst Fed chairman since the Fed was created in 1913."

OK maybe he had the most challenges and also got some stuff right, but I think there's a good chance this will turn out correct, that on balance Greenspan made some huge messes he didn't have to make.

I understand there is research into small "thermobaric" smart bombs that would suck all the air out of a house and leaves no damage outside the structure. No fuss, no muss! (of course it would be considered in-humane by the UN to suffocate combatant civilians)

I think the problem wasn't Greenspan, it was about 80 million baby boomers who suddenly realized they were getting older, and hadn't begun saving for their retirement. All of the bubbles of the past 15 years were driven by the desire for quick money from little work. There is only so much the Fed can do if 80 million people all want to chase "can't miss" investments.

I'm not saying to spy on them or wait your moment, just to try to grin and bear it, and look for a chance to help in small ways.

You've got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative

Liable to walk upon the scene

That's until you just can't stand it no mo.

MPACUK Calls for Jihad...
Is God’s Wrath coming to Muslims of the West?

The messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: "By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, rather my fear is that worldly luxury may become available to you as it became available to those who came before you, and that you will start competing in acquiring it as they competed and it will destroy you as it destroyed them." [1]

We are living in tumultuous times but they are no less tumultuous than the era of our beloved Prophet (pbuh).

Are Muslims in the West currently in the situation that the Prophet (pbuh) warned us so gravely about?

Is this one of the many reasons why we fail to put Jihad (struggling for justice) at the forefront of our life? Why do we seem to sacrifice so little for Jihad and for the sake of upholding justice and vanquishing oppression?

Is God’s Wrath coming to Muslims of the West?

Yeah, more Jihad will really help.

Greenspan's direct actions were to keep interest rates too low too long on several occassions, and too high too long at the end of the tech bubble.

Plus the ten trillion dollar shadow economy and hedge funds and the Long Term Capital bailout, came up on his watch.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the virtue in these is they completely destroy one (1) house at a time. How much do you think the natural gas weights, when it blows out the walls of a house? Couple of ounces, maybe, but then it uses ambient oxygen, the thermobarics bring their own.

To do the same with HE would require 1,000 pounds, which would damage houses for a hundred yards in every direction. Oh yeah, and people, too!

re: #186 Tigger2005

Some good advice elsewhere but I would recommend expressing yourself about your own political/social positions using posters, flyers, books, quotes and news stories that highlight what you think and who you admire for what they think placed around your work area. If anyone takes umbrage at your self-expression just tell them that you have a right to your opinion. If they try to make things difficult or outright fire you then you can sue their bigoted asses for discrimination and collect unemployment while doing so. Also it sounds like you might have a case for claiming violations of the Americans With Disabilities act (if you're a minority or can claim you're a minority then -- double whammy). Be yourself, express yourself. Working at a job that makes you miserable is NEVER worth it (it can literally kill you). Who knows maybe others will join you or you'll change some minds there. Don't let them intimidate you. You have a right to your opinions and beliefs and if they retaliate against you because of them then take 'em to court.

Good Luck. Let us know how things go.
