Wise.

Evolution is this this millennia's "earth is the center of the universe and if you believe otherwise you're not a Christian" controversy.

And just like that, hopefully, one day all Christians will have accepted evolution just like they now accept that the Earth revolves around the sun.

Blowing through heaven and earth, and in our hearts and the heart of every living thing, is a gigantic breath–a great Cry–which we call God. Plant life wished to continue its motionless sleep next to stagnant waters, but the Cry leaped up within it and violently shook its roots: "Away, let go of the earth, walk!" Had the tree been able to think and judge, it would have cried, "I don't want to. What are you urging me to do? You are demanding the impossible!" But the Cry, without pity, kept shaking its roots and shouting, "Away, let go of the earth, walk!"

It shouted in this way for thousands of eons; and lo! as a result of desire and struggle, life escaped the motionless tree and was liberated.
Animals appeared–worms–making themselves at home in water and mud. "We're just fine here," they said. "We have peace and security; we're not budging!"
But the terrible Cry hammered itself pitilessly into their loins. "Leave the mud, stand up, give birth to your betters!"
"We don't want to! We can't!"
"You can't, but I can. Stand up!"
And lo! after thousands of eons, humans emerged, trembling on their still unsolid legs.

The human being is a centaur; our equine hoofs are planted in the ground, but our body from breast to head is worked on and tormented by the merciless Cry. We have been fighting, again for thousands of eons, to draw ourselves, like a sword, out of our animalistic scabbard. We are also fighting–and this is our new struggle–to draw ourselves out of our human scabbard. Humans call in despair. "Where can I go? I have reached the pinnacle, beyond is the abyss." And the Cry answers, "I am beyond. Stand up!" All things are centaurs. If this were not the case, the world would rot into inertness and sterility.

I have always felt that the view that God could not have used evolution to develop this world is a slap at God's abilities.

The logic seems to go like this. God gave man a brain that he can use to observe the world. Using that brain, man observes and finds out all sorts of things about our world, where oil is located, how the strata of the Grand Canyon formed, why water erodes sandstone to make caves, etc.

However, when man uses their god-given brain to observe the fossil records and sees obvious evidence that evolution occurred, man is supposed to ignore it. That is the opposite of what the brain was given for.

What this ends up meaning is that God is mean-spirited, rewarding man in some instances and punishing man for using the same ability in other instances.

To say that God could not have used evolution is to diminish gods powers.

BAH! I deny it all. Behold the true word:

Funk upon a time
In the days of the Funkapus
The concept of specially-designed Afronauts
Capable of funkatizing galaxies
Was first laid on man-child
But was later repossessed
And placed among the secrets of the pyramids
Until a more positive attitude
Towards this most sacred phenomenon,
Clone Funk,
Could be acquired

(we want the funk, give up the funk)
There in these terrestrial projects
It would wait, along with its coinhabitants of kings and pharoahs
Like sleeping beauties with a kiss
That would release them to multiply
In the image of the chosen one:
Dr Funkenstein.
And funk is its own reward.
May I frighten you?

Just a little "pass it on" feel-good story. I saw an accordion for sale on Craigslist, for a measly 100 dollars. I could tell from the picture it was a very good accordion, Italian, about 40 years old.

Well, I emailed the owner. Her mother dies (she was 80 years old) and it was the mothers accordion, and they wanted it to go to someone who had an appreciation for accordions.

Well, I'm coming out here, but I have played the accordion for over 45 years. I have an early electronic model (1962), very heavy, all tubes, and becuase of the weight, I rarely play it.

This accordion was just the right size. We arranged to meet near my apartment.

Well, when she showed up, I went to hand here the 100 cash, and she tells me that she wants to give me the accordion. I didn't see that coming.

She wouldn't take a penny for it, she said I sounded like someone who would treat the instrument well, and she wanted to pass it on to someone like me.

So, for all those accordion lovers out there, here's a little "Lady of Spain" to you and K.M of Lakewood Colorado.

Restores a little faith in people, doesn't it?

"The fact is that when you have that many fires - and there are still 700 fires left all over the state of California - you get stretched thin with the resources," Schwarzenegger said.
The state's largest fire, located about 20 miles east of the Big Sur fire in a more remote area of the Los Padres forest, also continued to vex firefighters, having scorched more than 92 square miles and destroyed two homes. The blaze, sparked by a campfire on June 8, was about 71 percent contained.

How much crap has California dumped into the atmosphere and caused Global warming over the last 10 years.

Saving Darwin: How to Be a Christian and Believe in Evolution

I'm going to continue to promote this book. It was written by a former creationist scientist, gives a great history of the controversy starting at Darwin, and lays out the scientific and theological problems with ID in layman's terms so that just about anyone can understand. It's very readable, and not lengthy. I hope some will give it a chance.

LOUISVILLE, Ky — Sonny Landham carved out a tough-guy reputation in a series of big-screen roles, from roughing up Sylvester Stallone to getting tossed out a window by Carl Weathers. He pulls no punches in his newest role: Libertarian challenger to a man known for political toughness, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Now 67 and living in northeastern Kentucky, the man who played Billy Bear in "48 Hours" and was killed by an alien in "Predator" admits his action-movie days are behind him. "I think I'm having wild action when I take two aspirin with my hot chocolate at night," he quipped.

SNIP

But the bid includes some campaign baggage that seems scripted for Hollywood, instead of socially conservative Kentucky. Early in his acting career in the 1970s, Landham bared it all in adult films.

Asked whether that could hurt him politically, Landham replied, "What can I do? That was a part of my life you cannot call back."

But he does express regrets.

"If I was going to do it now — knowing that I'm going to have four children, knowing that I was going to run for office — no, I wouldn't make that choice," he told The Associated Press in an interview. "But at the time I made the choice of getting a paycheck, staying alive for your big break."

Landham also served more than 2 1/2 years in federal prison after being convicted of making threatening and obscene phone calls to his ex-wife. The conviction was thrown out by a federal appeals court that found he committed no crime.

SNIP

Yeah. Right.

Ya know , every time Charles starts a thread like this, there are bruised feelings. But it deals with the eternal question & lots of preconceived notions. The exploration of the fundamental question is fascinating.
I have usually been a bystander because I generally agree with the quotation at the top.
However , i did comment that no matter what , nobody actually believed in the Genesis account of Creation.
I was so wrong . The literalists shocked me.
It is a fairy tale. Ancient man's way of trying to explain things.
A belief in a Deity is not predicated on Genesis.

re: #66 Walter L. Newton

Walter in Golden, Co.

That is so sweet!

Belief in God does not preclude belief in evolution.
Belief in evolution does not preclude belief in God.
Do not trust those who insist otherwise.

— Lao Stinky

That I have no disagreement!

Richard Dawkins in an interview was asked this:

Is atheism the logical extension of believing in evolution?

Dawkins said this:

They clearly can't be irrevocably linked because a very large number of theologians believe in evolution. In fact, any respectable theologian of the Catholic or Anglican or any other sensible church believes in evolution. Similarly, a very large number of evolutionary scientists are also religious. My personal feeling is that understanding evolution led me to atheism.

So...what is he saying or insinuating here?

The charming moment of the day: he asked the CAT scan radiologist afterwards if the "radiation will damage my nuts." My knees buckled while I coughed myself silly to cover up the laughter. The problem with the theory of evolution (remember, it's only a theory) is that it ultimately equates amoeba with people. Belief in the theory of evolution leads to immorality since, according to this theory, there is no more holiness/specialness in a human being than there is in a single-celled creature. Evolution preaches survival of the fittest, not survival of the the humblest, the holiest, the closest to God.

So, if the ice at the North Pole is melted, like why isn't NYC, Miami, LA, SFO, Seattle, ... underwater like all the eco-freaks said would happen?

Another myth of Global Warming science.

Things "float" when the mass of the water they displace equals the mass of that thing.

Want to know how much a cruise ship weighs? Calculate the volume of the ship below the water line and multiply by the mass of water for each unit of volume.

Icebergs are made up of water. That water in the iceberg is no heavier than the water surrounding it. It "floats" because water takes up more space when frozen than when liquid. (anyone can take a 2 liter jug of water and freeze it over night and find the jug busted open the next morning).

The part of the iceberg that sits above the waterline represents exactly the amount of volume expansion for that mass of water when frozen. When that iceberg melt it will occupy exactly the same amount of space as did the portion of the iceberg under the water line (except for the now drowned polar bear that was on top).

The Arctic Ice "flood theory" is a fraud. Outright.

I don't know, Shar. I've read articles that have stated that large numbers of Muslims are converting to Christianity. (I followed other people's links and didn't save them.)

It's possible that, after being out of Islam for a few years, some might feel that they are able to trust another religious institution again.

It is extremely painful and psychologically disconcerting to have truly believed in something only to learn that you were completely wrong. If you truly believed in God but followed a bad teaching, what does that say about God? Why would God have allowed you to be so wrong when all you wanted to do was serve Him? It can be a shattering experience after which the only alternative for some might be to turn away from religion completely.

Wise.

Evolution is this this millennia's "earth is the center of the universe and if you believe otherwise you're not a Christian" controversy.

And just like that, hopefully, one day all Christians will have accepted evolution just like they now accept that the Earth revolves around the sun.

The proof that we revolve around the sun is contained in mathematic equations which are beyond the reach of understanding of 90% of the population of the world.

Well, Newton's laws are used most of the time, because Einstein's effects are quite small at normal speeds. Newton wasn't wrong, his theories are an approximation, and a quite good one for most uses.

About "Before the Beginning" -- I posted this on that ID thread a couple of days ago. I'll repeat it:

With respect to scientific cosmology...there are a number of resources available. Martin Rees (a British cosmologist and astrophysicist) wrote (for lay people) "Before the Beginning" (in 1997). In "Before the Beginning" Rees does ask the question -- what was before the Big Bang? (might add, that there are theories about an expansionary universe, followed by a contraction (the contraction phase is referred to by "the big crunch" -- after the big crunch comes a singularity -- a Big Bang -- thus, the universe is oscillating.)

Brian Greene in "The Elegant Universe" also devotes a chapter to "Reflections on Cosmology." (In this chapter, Greene puts "the Big Bang to the test"). Greene also addresses the question of "Before the beginning?" Greene writes: "...Gasperini and Veneziano suggest there there may be a whole prehistory to the universe -- starting long before what we have so far been called time zero -- that leads up to the Planckian cosmic embryo. In this so-called pre-big bang scenario, the universe began in a vastly different state than it does in the big bang framework...The pre-big bang scenario...has already generated a significant amount of heated, yet fruitful debate..." (p. 362).

Also, the Bell Curve is bunk -- repeat -- it's Bunk...(The Bell Curve won an Ignoble Prize a decade or so ago.)

In 2001, the American Religious Identification Survey (ARIS) based in the City University of New York, reported some surprising figures. The great majority of the US adult population call themselves Christian: 160 million adults. But what group takes second place? Jews? No. For all their formidable electoral clout, the 2.8 million Jews are massively outnumbered by the nearly 30 million non-religious or secular Americans. Organizing atheists is like herding cats. But if the unbelievers of America could only get their act together a tenth as effectively as the legendarily powerful Jewish lobby, what might they not achieve? Maybe at least some candidates for high office would gain the courage to tell us what they truly believe. And still get elected.

And this:

[...]"Their stinky tofu really stinks very bad. Once my schoolmate rode a bus passing our neighbourhood, he could smell the stink from inside the bus," a high school student was quoted on a television broadcast.

Stinky tofu lovers fear that authorities' crackdown on the delicacy on air pollution grounds may lead to the closure of many stinky tofu shops and roadside stalls.

Cable TV channel TVBS reported that Kuang Tou Lao is not the smelliest stinky tofu restaurant in Taipei. TVBS showed an unnamed stinky tofu vendor who rubs a type of smelly gravel onto the tofu to make it more pungent.

Stinky tofu originated in southern China. Vendors store tofu in a jar to make it ferment and then fry the tofu cubes in hot oil, making the bean curd white and soft inside but golden and crispy outside.

In Taiwan, a plate of stinky tofu costs about T$30. It is eaten together with soy sauce, chilly sauce, garlic sauce and pickled cabbage.[...]

That is the double-edged sword of God's greatest gift that most, even spiritual people fail to understand. His greatest gift besides life, is the right of free will. Even the angels don't have that right. We have the right to make the wrong decisions. The negative side to that is that God will gently and subtly give us a glimpse into His will for us, but he ain't letting us cheat on the test. with free will comes the test of faith. He will not twart His greatest gift to us!

I don't like him either, and in no way do I want my previous comments to be misconstrued as some sort of defense of him. However- he is entitled, just as much as the rest of us are, to come to whatever conclusion(s) regarding Faith as the next person.

As I was trying to get at before, some people's path to atheism stems from islamic apostasy. They found the koran irrational, and apply the same logic to the Bible. That's how it works for them, and as an American, I'll grant them that. Do I agree with them- no, but they have that right in my mind. So too does Dawkins, and I disagree with him on Faith as well. We all come to grips with matters of Faith in our own way, on our own path. To try to use science as a club to beat people over the head that it's somehow atheistic because of one man's opinion is disingenuous, to say the least.

Too simple version: Why is it God's fault?

I'm not saying it would be God's fault. It depends on how much you believe God is involved in your day-to-day life.

If you ask God every day to lead you in the right way and you trust Him to do so, but He allows you to follow a false teaching or bad interpretation, then it would follow (in the minds of some) that He did not care enough to make sure you found the right teaching, that He abandoned you despite the love in your heart for Him and your honest desire to follow Him.

"him" is the operative word. Many here have stated that believe in evolution didn't lead them to atheism. Are you calling them liars? Are you insinuating that they're not "true" believers?

In science, when the same input (belief in evolution) leads to opposite outputs (faith retained vs. atheism) the variable is considered NON-CAUSAL.

What is your person opinion of those who maintain that they believe in god and evolution (don't copy and paste someone elses opinion)?

Hi DanG..

That is why I made one word that Dawkins used BOLD...re: #200 Dan G.

About

What is your person opinion of those who maintain that they believe in god and evolution (don't copy and paste someone elses opinion)?

Since I have a degree in Biology, I am familiar with evolution and I understand the nuances of evolution.

I have no argument with micro evolution...it has been supported beyond the shadow of doubt. Any religious believers that think otherwise would be wrong.

It is the MACRO aspect that is the challenging part. Even Coyne said it in the infamous quote that Behe quoted and left the rest out. The quote that Behe left out was this

its theoretical foundations and the experimental evidence supporting it are weak, and there is no doubt that mutations of large effect are sometimes important in adaptation.

We hasten to add, however, that we are not “macromutationists” who believe that adaptations are nearly always based on major genes. The neo-Darwinian view could well be correct. It is almost certainly true, however, that some adaptations involve many genes of small effect and others involve major genes. The question we address is, How often does adaptation involve a major gene? We hope to encourage evolutionists to reexamine this neglected question and to provide the evidence to settle it.

re: #251 Sharmuta

In every age people have conceived of God in tems they understand. 3000 years ago G-d was understood as a stern tribal patriarch. 2000 years ago He was seen as a gentle shepard. 1400 years ago, and among a different cultural group, god was beleived to be a powerful tribal bandit.

In the Age of Reason, God was a clockwork machine which ticked away and drove the motion of the universe. Today, God is a scientist, which is why IDers adopt the language of science to advance their theology. And ironically, it's also why people like Dawkins pretend to have some special authority to denounce God.

Well, in my humble opinion, God is immeasurably more complex and trancendant for any humanly conceivable metaphor to contain Him.

The only way to bring the price of oil down is to increase the supply or decrease the demand. Of course if the economy crashes that will decrease the demand, but it would be better for all of us to work on increasing the supply. And it would be relatively simple to do, we already know where the oil is sitting there waiting for us.

This is the #1 issue this campaign, increasing the oil supply to drive away speculators and bring the price downward. To oppose that is to say F* the American economy. As for the WoT, and containing the Iranian nuclear threat, I'd say this.. you can't have a strong military without a strong economy supporting it.

The more complicated the problem seems, the simpler its solution. And its crazy to watch our economy spiral downward for lack of oil, while we have the oil sitting there in the ground. McCain needs to use this issue to drive a wedge in the democratic base. Make Obama stand up and say he opposes any new domestic oil production.

I have to admit I did laugh a few weeks ago at the little guy, and I really should not have. But being an almost 2 year old? He was practicing. I apologized to daughter, who actually admitted that he was funny, and he knew it...that smirk?

My grandkids call me what my kids called my Mum zt'l...Nana. My 6 and 8 year old granddaughters are growing up waaaay too fast!

BTW, I may have mentioned it...I am originally from Brighton and Newton.

re: #260 paxnhymn

Thanks, I understand your point, but free will doesn't cover it for me.

A willing, open heart that is led in the wrong direction, sometimes by virtue of geography or heredity... When you ask God for direction and think He has answered, only to find that you were so stupidly wrong... This isn't about deliberately choosing the wrong path, this is about being misled when you have submitted your life to God and asked Him to lead you. If you've done this and then followed the wrong teaching, one conclusion you might make is that a loving God does not exist because, if He did, He would have done something to stop you from being such a fool, since your heart was in the right place. Another conclusion might be that God is not directly involved in our day-to-day lives and that an adjustment in religious doctrine is necessary in order to continue to believe.

Leaving a religion can be a painful thing. It can hurt for years. This pain and disillusionment might cause some people to abandon all faith.

The question of why God allows things to happen is a bigger question than any of us can answer succinctly on someone's blog. We all have to decide, on our own, what we believe about it. I, personally, drew great comfort from Rabbi Kushner's book, "When Bad Things Happen to Good People".

I'm not myself a literalist, and I'm not in any way, shape or form supporting or advocating ignorance. I'm just saying that (to me) it is the height of mortal arrogance impose belief (or non-belief) systems upon another human being. I personally have what I believe is an abiding faith in God, yet I love science, and with what little intellect and curiosity my creator has blessed me with, am able to appreciate the physical/historical evidence that stands before me. What I don't believe in are blanket condemnations of the flavor or color of faith that some have chosen. That's all!

For someone who disagrees with the Wedge, you sure have a funny way of subtly engaging in it's strategy.

Sharmuta, I never believed in forcing anyone to believe what I believe.

I totally believe in free will, for that is a precious gift from God.

Each of us has a free will, we have choices. We can choose who to follow, we can choose who to believe.

It is like this, I eat kosher and yet I am a Christian. I am not going to force anyone else to eat kosher because I eat kosher.

If anyone asks me why I eat kosher, I explain, both Scripturally and how it was supported by certain medical examples and the obvious observation why certain animals are considered Biblically unclean (just watch what they eat) and if they don't want to follow it, that is fine with me. If they want to follow me, that is great! But the key is, I do NOT PUSH or FORCE anyone to follow my path. It is a path I chose as a way to honor God.

I also forgot to question what the relevance of your stating that you are a biologist... are you attempting an argument from authority? Or are you a real-life (as opposed to a cyber) antievoltion-moby?

As for homeotic genes...

"In evolutionary biology today, macroevolution is used to refer to any evolutionary change at or above the level of species."
talkorigins.org)

Changes in the way a creature looks, or the morphology of certain bones, etc... will be driven by changes in the genes responsible for such "shapes". Changes in these genes can result in changes in macroscopic (viewable by the naked unaided eye) characteristics. So, where's the confusion? This wouldn't be the ONLY source of genes with macroscopic consequences, but they are an example. So, are you going to answer the original question or not?

When you say "earth is not the center of the universe" do you mean philosophically or literally? I still say there is a good argument that it is the most important planet in the universe - at least in my understanding it is.... The idea that the "center of the universe" means literally the middle is a false assumption - that's like saying Missouri is the most important state because it's in the middle of the United States. I think the earth holds a very unique position in the universe as we know it - you might event say it is the philosophical center of our universe. Just like New York City is to the United States (and not Independence Missouri). Have we discovered the planet that is at the literal center of the universe - and is it now the most important planet we know?

She had 98 grandchildren.

I have been living in NY for nearly 50 years. I went to nursing school in Brooklyn, where I met NY Grampa. We lived in MA the first 3 years of our marriage, as hubby was in the Army, stationed at the now-defunct Boston Army Base. Our oldest was born at the Beth Israel. We moved back to NY just before #2, our daughter, was born.

It sounds like we are having the same experiences with the little ones!

The grandson calls me Nana..it was hilarious. He kept saying the word months ago, when he first started walking. Daughter was baffled as she didn't think he yet put the name with the person. She called me one AM, laughing sooo hard...she asked him where Nana was, and he took her finger, and pulled her into the kitchen, where he pointed at the banana tree!

Now? He knows us, and loves to take the phone away from her and just say Nana, and also Babba, which is what he calls his Grampa..we can't figure it out, but I have a feeling that he is using the Hebrew word for Grampa..Sabba..and the sibilant sound of the letter 's' he has not quite mastered. Two of the teaching assistants at his nursery school are Israelis, and they do use Hebrew sometimes.

My 6 and 8 year old granddaughters are also 'onlys' as I was. Not by choice, sadly, for the little guys, but they are very close, and adore their little cousin.

We did it the old-fashioned way! We earned the fun with the little ones!

re: #338 Dan G.

About the dichotomy between religion and evolution, I do not deny that there are evolution scientists who believe in God. Dr Kenneth Miller, Dr Francis Collins...etc...

I did read Dr Collins' The Language of God. It relates more on how he arrived his evangelical faith rather than explaining in detail how he reconciled the theory of evolution with his belief.

As to your question about the relevance of my Biological studies...well, I say this is so that an understanding is established that I am not anti science but I LOVE SCIENCE and that I do know and understand the arguments of evolution.

About the homeotic genes, changing the way a creature looks does not lead to a different class or family.

You cited talkorigins definition of macroevolution and limited to one...the species and speciation.

But remember, there is an expansion of the definition:

In evolutionary biology today, macroevolution is used to refer to any evolutionary change at or above the level of species. It means at least the splitting of a species into two (speciation, or cladogenesis, from the Greek meaning "the origin of a branch", see Fig. 1) or the change of a species over time into another (anagenetic speciation, not nowadays generally accepted [note 1]). Any changes that occur at higher levels, such as the evolution of new families, phyla or genera, are also therefore macroevolution, but the term is not restricted to those higher levels. It often also means long-term trends or biases in evolution of higher taxonomic levels.

That is why we need to specifically DEFINE it the level you are using it.

Remember what talkorigins said about scientific terms:

Science is not always consistent in its use of terms; this is the source of much confusion. Sometimes this is carelessness, and sometimes this is because of the way in which terms are developed over time. When biologists and paleontologists talk about macroevolution in the sense of "large-scale" evolution, they are strictly speaking meaning only a part of the phenomena the term covers, but it is the most interesting part for those specialists. That is, they are talking about the patterns of well-above-species-level evolution (Smith 1994).

And of course, we have the word species...what does one mean by species? Take a look at this article about the word species:

[Link: plato.stanford.edu...]

and note this

Biologists disagree on the definition of the term ‘species'.

If one of your 5 fundamental beliefs is to chop my head off then I have to disagree and I hope you are a liberal who doesn't really practice what you believe.

I personally have no issue with the Amish. To each their own, I say. And to the best of my knowledge, so say the Amish.

To the best of my knowing, the Amish do as they see fit for themselves without trying to impose their beliefs on the rest of society. They even go so far as to give those of their communities who come of age to spend a certain amount of time in the real world (read: modern American society) so that they have the opportunity to choose how to live their own lives. If they choose to leave the commune, they are free to go.

To my way of thinking, the Amish are a people grounded in the fundamentals of their way of life, but are not strict fundamentalists.

I am the granddaughter of 4 Jewish immigrants...all from large families, also, yet their American children had usually 2-3 kids each. I balanced out both sides to an even number by being the only'only'.

Growing up (born in 1938), the Italian and Jewish communities were close. I remember the North End and East Boston...and my son in law is of Italian Protestant and Catholic background, and is an atheist, from Joisey. He is doing everything he can to make sure that the little guy is brought up as a Jew. He is a wonderful many, and we adore him. He has the same sardonic sense of humor, and also likes the same things as my 3 sons. I can't stay in the same room very long, as my sides hurt! One of my DIL's was born humor-challenged...she asks me what the heck is so funny! Then I have to keep a straight face.

One of my sons will be 41 on Sunday...I still can't believe it! Where does it go?

Being a grandparent is the reward for all the diapers we changed...whoops, never mind...we are still changing the little guy's, and are in the Depends™ dynamics. ;)

re: #37 daveolson

Good post, thanks for putting it up. I'd say your point depends on what sort of "God" you believe in.

What's usually meant in these evolution vs. faith arguments is the God of the Christian faith, the God who in the Bible claims to have created the earth and humans and trees and reptiles, etc. If that's the God you mean then no, He could not have "used evolution" to create humans, since the book of Genesis, while not a science textbook -- read the opening creation chapters as a liturgical hymn, not reported science -- does make plain the fact that humanity was a separate, distinct creation from the animal order, imago Dei, created in the image of God.

I like C.S. Lewis's observation that he believes God did create the world, whatever method He used. That sounds like your argument here, and for the most part it's a good one, yes. It's valid for some interspecial evolution, but that's not the point of the whole discussion, of course. The reason why the religion of atheism has insisted on this dogma of evolution is because they want to arrive at the belief that humans are not created in the image of God, that man is just another animal and has no more responsibility to acknowledge and obey a Creator God than monkeys, fish or tuataras.

That's what's behind every argument for "transitional fossils," species evolving from one another, keeping faith out of science, etc. It all boils down to the issue of "Do I want to believe that I was created by God?" Those who don't, those who want to lose the obligations and responsibilities that would follow from an acknowledgement that they were created uniquely by a personal God, they start from that end and work backwards to create an alternate religious dogma to fit their preferred belief.

Science is as influenced by emotion and prejudice as any other discipline. This blog generally attracts one of the most intelligent, critical set of posters on the Internet, people who can detect the emotional orientation of the junk science used to buttress anthropogenic global warming to shreds in minutes, but reading through the posts on this topic it's unbelievable how quickly some who oppose creation start sounding just as emotionally shrill and hysterical as any Al Gore acolyte. You can almost do a simple word replacement, "evolution" for "global warming" when each talk about those who dare disagree with them.

That's because they're not motivated by science but by the emotional desire for there not to be a Creator God, and people of otherwise great logical insight and intellectual acumen are as emotionally blind as anyone on certain points, you and me included, of course. They can point out quite correctly and rationally that we Christians can't prove that God did create the world and therefore can't claim this as objective truth, but in the next breath they completely abandon logic and rationality, grabbing their emotional security blanket as they say that if those who believe in Creation can't explain exactly how God did create the world then that logically means He didn't. There's no logical consistency in such a position, just pure emotional need.

I realized long ago that you can't argue with such people. Oh I tried, but it's as much a fool's game as trying to argue some frothing lefty out of anthropogenic global warming. You simply can't sit down and have a rational, logical discussion about anything with anyone when one of you is arguing from fact and the other is arguing from emotion, and I'm sure they feel the same way about us, too.

Anyway. It helps to understand the powerful emotional need many people have to deny the existence of a Creator God, and to realize that the principal dynamic they use is science as interpreted through belief, just as they accuse us of doing.

DanG, I am trying very hard not to confuse you at all...

Yes, I believe in MICRO evolution...

As to the MACRO evolution, that would be on the level of class and families that there is no convincing support yet.

You said:

You stated that you didn't understand the relevance of the body patterning genes, and when clarified, you still refused to answer.

DanG, I did answer your question. I said this in response to your question:

About the homeotic genes, changing the way a creature looks does not lead to a different class or family.

DanG said:

Each of your replies dodges the original question, and points to some quote *suggesting* uncertainty in the minutiae of the formal definition.

Well, DanG, you quoted talkorigins.org definition of MACROEVOLUTION but you LEFT THE REST OUT....You did what Coyne criticized Behe of doing, that Behe added a period and forgot to add the rest of the quote. Thus changing the meaning. Talkorigins expanded the definition of MACRO evolution to also include class, family besides species, of which you attempted to ignore.

I was NOT dodging any of your question but directly mentioning to you the issue at hand, what is the exact definition of the word you are using? Is your definition same as mine?

Even the word 'species' has different meanings depending on who is talking and what is the subject. I am not trying to fudge, or obfuscate at all... check it out...even talkorigins.org admit the confusion of key terms used in science.

Even Wikipedia notes this by saying

In biology, a species is one of the basic units of biological classification and a taxonomic rank. A species is often defined as a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. While in many cases this definition is adequate, more precise or differing measures are often used, such as based on similarity of DNA or morphology. Presence of specific locally adapted traits may further subdivide species into subspecies.

Why does the definition of species in Biology include the word OFTEN defined? Does it mean sometimes it can be defined or used in other ways?

The answer is yes.

Wikipedia has an entire section on the difficulty of defining 'species'

It is surprisingly difficult to define the word "species" in a way that applies to all naturally occurring organisms, and the debate among biologists about how to define "species" and how to identify actual species is called the species problem.

Therein the challenge for those folks not into Biology.

Do I try to obfuscate? You decide.

383 Clubbeaux  Fri, Jun 27, 2008 1:51:29am

re: #380 Sharmuta

Maybe this is my fault for not being clear, but I recognize the scientific validity of evolution within species – cats, rats ‘n’ bats modifying over time. It’s the idea that species evolve into other species which is so far unproven – people stay people, cats stay cats.

If my using the term “interspecial” confused you then I apologize, I should have written “intraspecial,” meaning “within species,” but it should have been pretty clear from the rest of my post that I don’t believe humans evolved from lower life forms.

Let it be noted here, also, that I’m not a Catholic and I see no particular need to defend Catholic theology or practice. They don’t speak for all Christians and the Church speaks with no special authority in scientific matters.

You said that I “carry water for the DI.” If it’s the pro-creation institute mentioned elsewhere in this discussion then you’re wrong. I’m only glancingly aware of that organization, I’ve never sought it out, never read anything they’ve produced and I can’t name a single person associated with them. I’m sure I’d agree with some parts of what some of them say and disagree with other things they say.

It’s depressing to see you using such ad hominem logical fallacy, on the intellectual level of “all Christians are snake-handlers,” since I’d like an intelligent discussion with an atheistic evolutionist that gets above such name-calling, pigeonholing and silliness and really grapples with the facts and beliefs involved, but as I’ve learned again here such discussions are rare.

You say this is not about God vs. no God. Of course it is. The only reason this discussion exists is because we’re discussing whether Creator God exists or not. That’s the only reason it attracts such emotional defenses, is because some people just really, really want to disbelieve in Creator God. Otherwise it’s just another obscure scientific idea nobody cares about.

The essential point is teleological – either man exists in the form in which he was created, with minor alterations as such as can be expected over time but always recognizably human, or he was at one point unrecognizable as a human. In other words, he was either designed to be what he is now, or he arrived at this current state by random chance, trial and error.

I don’t see how you can hold to intelligent design and not then believe in an intelligent designer, i.e. some form of God, or how you can believe it was all random chance and believe in any form of “God” worthy of the name.

384 Sharmuta  Fri, Jun 27, 2008 3:12:16am

re: #383 Clubbeaux

I’d like an intelligent discussion with an atheistic evolutionist

Oh- you're looking for Killgore Trout then. I'm not a atheist. Please quit with the assumptions- that's twice now.

Also- I didn't call you any names, so I fail to see from where you think the ad hominem is coming. If you don't understand why I think you were spouting DI talking points, perhaps you should look into it. Just punch up the Wedge Strategy in you search engine.

Furthermore- you are wrong. This discussion is very much not about God vs. no God. What we've been discussing is what we teach American school children in the science classroom. Do we teach them science, or do we teach them theology? I, for one, would like my children to learn about God from me and not the government. It's unfortunate that you seem to think this is about the false dichotomy of God vs. science. Why can't I and my children have both?

385 Clubbeaux  Fri, Jun 27, 2008 4:18:32am

re: #384 Sharmuta

False dichotomy of God vs. science. I fail to see how anything I said can be (mis)construed as advocating a false dichotomy of God vs. science.

So now because I believe in intelligent design I'm "spouting" the "talking points" of some organization I have absolutely nothing to do with. And yes, saying that somebody's studied, argued and thought-out beliefs are merely "carrying water" for some organization they've barely heard of, an organization they've never referenced or cited, is an insult.

Of course using insults like that does make it much easier to dismiss what I'm saying, that's why ad hominem is such a popular logical fallacy. If you can simply pigeonhole me as a DI waterboy that does free you from the intellectual challenge of debating me, yes.

Teaching school children Darwinian materialistic evolution is teaching one theological view. -- "God did not create you." Teaching intelligent design is teaching another theological view -- "God did create you." Either way, you're teaching theology. Neither can be conclusively, utterly proven or disproven by science, which is why they both flow logically from your view of God.

What you believe about God -- a.k.a. your "theology," everybody has it, serious Christians and atheists both have a highly developed sense of it -- determines which view you'll favor, of course, since science proves or disproves neither. Sometimes religious nutcases try to dispute science on religious grounds -- Rudolf Steiner's Waldorf schools teach that blood does not circulate, for example -- but there's nothing conclusively proven by science that's a problem for Biblical Christianity. Darwinian materialistic evolution is still a theory, still unproven by science, so Christians are intellectually free to dispute it.

If you believe Creator God as presented in the Bible you don't believe Darwinian materialistic evolution. If you believe in Darwinian materialistic evolution, that humanity descended from apes and ultimately single-celled organisms by merest chance -- what gets shorthanded down to "evolution" in discussions such as these -- you don't believe in the God of the Bible, no.

Either way the question's ultimately theological, since science cannot provide definite answers either way. Theistic cultures teach intelligent design, materialistic cultures teach evolution, cultures evolving from one to the other have arguments such as we're having now.

Wow, Lao Stinky has much wisdom. I've always believed in God, it's just something I've always felt in my heart and nothing has been able to shake this belief. I've also always believed in evolution as God's mechanism, long before I heard the term intelligent design.

I've had plenty of contact with fanatics on both sides. Ultra-Religious types who thundered anyone who didn't believe the creation story in the Bible would burn in hell. Ultra-Evolutionists who accused believers of peddling superstition and ignorance. More proof that fanatics, regardless of what their fanatical about, are some of the worst neighbors you can have. Indeed, both follow a religion, regardless of what they say.

I, for one, understand why our host Charles keeps harping on this subject. Far too many believers are trying to impose this matter of belief, ID, in science classes where it doesn't belong. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, Intelligent Design is a belief, a matter of faith. I believe it's true but I can't prove it scientifically. Science is about what can be proven with the scientific method, and that's how science works best. All we have to do is look at Muslim lands, where little real science is practiced lest it conflict with the in-mutable word of their prophet. The free spirit of scientific inquiry has been one Western Civilizations' greatest accomplishments. Shackle it to religion and you get the Middle East, a den of ignorance and superstition outside of Israel (a religious nation with the spirit free scientific inquiry).

Belief in God does not preclude belief in evolution.
Belief in evolution does not preclude belief in God.
Do not trust those who insist otherwise.

— Lao Stinky

I agree.

...but it seems to me that if you believe in both, then you believe in intelligent design.

/...I have not read any comments on this thread.

I believe you are implying that a belief in God equals a belief in creationism and that creationism equals ID. Which is not exactly the case. The concept that God created the universe is distinct from the Intelligent Design formulation. ID is an attempt to challenge science on its terms, and includes tenets of observational research and supposition from observed data. The resulting supposition is generally unverifiable in a scientific sense. Thus making ID an imprecise science, much as is phrenology. ID is very subjective.

I believe what you are getting at is that Stinky might agree that God could have created the universe and evolution and is now allowing it to evolve on its own. That scenario is not self-contradicting, both can be true; God created, evolution is real.

re: #386 Honorary Yooper

Okay, the assignment is to learn something about Catholic teaching on evolution.

Will do, although as I've said before, I'm not a Catholic and don't feel any particular need to defend Catholic teachings. I do feel the need to report them accurately, however, and I assume that not everything taught in Catholic schools adheres strictly to catechical, dogmatic Catholic teachings, and that to look for what "the Church" can be said to teach it's probably better to rely on councils, encyclicals and the catechism:

The 1870 Vatican Council found that the first Man, body and soul, was created by God, and declared that "the idea that a spiritual soul was created in an animal body is alien to the words of the Scriptures, Christian Tradition, and all the Church Fathers and theologians."

The 1909 Biblical Commission Decree re-emphasized the traditional Christian teaching of the special creation of Man and the formation of the first woman from the first man. For interpreting Genesis 1-3 the commission found that "these chapters relate to real events, not myths, legends or mere allegories or symbols... we need not expect scientific exactitude in expressing the inner nature of visible things or to read the complete order of creation," and "the word day may be taken as a natural day or a certain space of time, and this question may be freely discussed."

In 1950 Pope Pius XII's encyclical titled "Humani Generis" found that Christians are "not to hold evolution as proved, or to use it to explain the origin of all things," as "this leads to pantheism, materialism and other false philosophies." It permitted research and discussion into the doctrine of evolution regarding the question of the origin of the human body from pre-existing living matter, but certainly never agreed with it, merely stating that "research must consider theories favourable and unfavourable to evolution fairly." And in direct opposition to the Darwinian materialist theory, the encyclical affirmed that "each human soul is specially created by God."

The Vatican Council II didn't address the issue, and the next top-level statement on it is in Pope John Paul II's 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church, which spends 31 pages of text on the subject of "Creation." It reaffirms the traditional teachings, finding that "among all the Scriptural texts about creation, the first three chapters of Genesis occupy a unique place... they express the truths of creation its origin and its end in God." The theory of evolution is not addressed anywhere in the document.

But hey, that's just a dumb Prot's reason for stating that the Catholic Church does not teach that humans evolved from apes.

And my review of church history seems to show that Protestants did not split off, but that the Catholic Church kicked them out once we started bringing up topics such as "grace," "faith" and "corruption."

Now, could you explain your interesting statement that evolution is not even addressed in scientific theory, or am I reading that incorrectly?

re: #311 slokat

...so G-d at fault that you grew up in the wrong place/time/culture -v/s- G-d be praised that you figured it out and took a different path?

Not said in jest - lot's of people have wrestled with this same issue.

As in -

What if a righteous person that never heard of G-d lived exactly as G-d wanted/demanded/requires but never heard of G-d?

Good morning, slokat! I hope you will be able to read my response sometime.

I think that someone who leaves a religion might arrive at either of those two conclusions or might decide on another reason. He might think one of those applies and later decide that the other one fits better. It depends on the person and his emotional/spiritual needs, personality and world view.

In your other comment you said something about knowing you are following God's will vs. your own. If a person believes with all their heart that they are following God's will, then later comes to the conclusion that they had been wrong, how can they trust their own inner voice again, let alone trust in a God who was silent while they were led astray into a wrong path?

If they had been taught that the devil was waiting around every corner to steal their soul and that their salvation was never certain, they would also struggle with the question of whether or not they are doubting their religion because a) they're using their intellect, b) God's trying to tell them something or c) they're listening to the devil.

Then consider that leaving the faith of your upbringing also involves being rejected or shunned by your family, friends and community.

It can be a huge emotional ordeal. It all depends on how devout the person had been.

Re. your point about the righteous person. I think different religions might have different theories about that moral dilemma. The more fundamentalist the religion, the harsher the answer might be. And then, within each religion, each person has to come to terms with such questions on his own. But that is a more abstract issue than the process of a devout believer leaving his religion.

Charles and etal,

The challenge of this debate is on what level do you believe in evolution? There is the micro and then there is the macro. I had to copy and paste the definition from talkorigins.org seeing that the previous post I posted , I got a response that claimed that I made up the term or that I followed the DI talking points regarding the micro and macro. Micro and Macro evolution is an accepted term within Biology. And yes, definitions can vary according to who use it, and thus it is good to precisely define it when discussing the issues.

Then you have discussion of evolution of 'species' and speciation. Biologists have been arguing the definition of species for a while and the problem we have is we think we know what we mean when we say 'species' when discussing Biology.

The accepted definition of species is that of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offsprings.

Would this apply to bacterias? Note you had an article of a new species of E Coli that normally is unable to use citrate that 'evolved' to one that can.

Would this apply to organisms that exhibit hermaphrodite type breeding?

Biology is quite complex in the issue of evolution and I do not think I have ever said that anyone who believes in evolution is an atheist either.

In terms of obfuscation, I did have someone else read my posts to see if I was trying to 'obfuscate' in any way, because I that was not my intention at all, I got agreement from third parties that I was not trying to obfuscate the issues at all but define it precisely.

re: #392 Charles

Define what you mean by "evolution." Do you mean by that the idea that physical matter just sort of, well, you don't know how but it all just sort of... materialized one day, and that one atom swerved enough to randomly connect with another atom so that pretty soon you have a molecule, and that that molecule randomly knocked into another one, and so on and so on until you end up with all the stars and planets and our solar system and Earth, and on that earth, through sheer chance water formed some places and dry land formed some other places, and then through more random activity plant life started, and then through more random, unplanned activity life started in oceans, after which you had some aquatic creatures, who after a few eons decided to live on land and grow legs, and so on and so on through monkeys to humans until you get present-day humanity and the world as we know it today?

If that's what you mean by "evolution," if you believe that, then you cannot believe the God as presented in the Bible, since He's plainly presented as the Creator God who intelligently designed Earth and the universe and created humanity especially distinct from the rest of creation in His image. If you don't believe that that's what the Bible says then you have some reading to do, if you do know that that's what the Bible says then I'd be interested to hear how you can believe in the Creator God of the Bible and the fact that He didn't, well, create anything.

That is so insulting, I don't even know where to begin. IMO- it is the height of arrogance for Man to define God. Furthermore- there are plenty of Christians who accept Jesus and evolution- the Bible tells them they will go to Heaven. Will you be shocked to see "evolutionists" there?

re: #397 Sharmuta

"It is the height of arrogance for Man to define God." But of course when you say "I do not want anyone teaching my children their concept of God -- that's my job," you're not going to "define" God in the process. Must be rather interesting conversations.

I have not "defined" God, that I've merely used how He's presented in the Bible -- which I didn't write, therefore it's not my "definition" of Him. There's no denying that He is presented in the Bible as the Creator of all that is, and that He specifically created humanity as a distinct order of creation -- in His image.

You say many Christians believe in evolution. Many people call themselves many things and say they believe all kinds of things. Why, I've even heard of "Christian Marxists," a contradiction in terms if there ever were one.

But let's lose all the names and labels and just get down to the question at hand. I haven't said anything about who's a Christian and who's not. I have no idea if anybody's a real Christian or not, I don't know the state of anyone's soul, nor have I ever claimed to know who's a Christian and who's not.

I'm not interested in what people call themselves. I'm interested in how somebody, whatever label they use for themselves, can profess to believe in the God of the Bible -- notice that I qualify "God" in that way -- who is clearly and unquestionably presented as Creator God, and at the same time believe that everything exists by random chance, uncreated by anyone or anything.

If you want to believe in the God of the Bible, great. If you want to believe in random chance, Darwinian materialistic evolution, that's your business. You can't have both, and that's not my "definition," that's the plain fact.

By the way, point me to where in the Bible it says that those who "accept Jesus and evolution" are going to heaven.

Okay, now that we've all had a good night's rest, maybe we can refrain from throwing stupid insults around.

Interesting that you believe John 3:16, but don't believe all the verses where the Bible talks about God creating the world, creating man in his image, etc. I mean, if the Bible's lying about God creating you why wouldn't it lie about God saving you?
