Democrats Ban Frying

Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 10:59:12 am PDT

Tackling the big issues.

DENVER — Warning to Southern delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver this August: it will be a no-fry zone.

As part of the effort to make the August 25-28 convention the greenest ever, the Democrats’ guidelines for food catering include one that strikes at the heart of Southern cuisine: no fried food.

No fried chicken. No fried catfish. No fried green tomatoes. No fried okra. No fried anything.

In promoting healthy eating habits, the Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include “at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white.”

It’s the new patriotism,” says Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, the driving force behind the greening of the Democratic convention.

Wouldn't the Carbon Footprint be even smaller if they had a virtual convention? Think of many much CO2 they will create all traveling to Colorado.

Al Gore and flying remain on the unendangered species list though. That tells you the seriousness of these nonsensical efforts. Nannystaters doing what they always do - trying to limit personal choice.

Then again, getting rid of fatty foods might be the Al Gore rule taking effect; they're doing it to get Al to stop gorging himself. Before long, Gore might have to pay fuel surcharges for all his jetsetting ways because he's over the weight limits. /

What will Bill Clinton eat at the convention?

We need a fried food stand outside the convention hall, with the cooking smells going into the air intake. It will drive the delegates nuts with hunger.

As I am a capitalist, I think we should capitalize on this very silly situation and make it a money opportunity for us!

Here it is (don't steal my idea, I will be watching!): We could set up a sort of lemonade type stand right across the street and sell Fried EVERYTHING - chicken, fish, oreos, snickers bars, ice cream. We will make a bundle.

I think we all need to take up a collection $5.00 each and have someone who lives in Denver go to the nearest Kentucky Fried Chicken and see how many buckets of the good stuff we can get and then smuggle it in and see how of that fried gold we can set out...

I love the stuff and you know these hungover yahoos will too!

There will not be a sober one in the bunch and if they are sober it will only be because they are hungover and haven't got their fix yet...

Hell that is all these conventions are anyway is one big cocktail party and if they think they can have it without some grease each day they have more serious issues than being out of touch politically...lol

They are going to pay a sh!tload for the caters and all the delegates will ditch early so they can go to a real restaurant and eat real food.

I predict there will be a lot of carry-out and room-service orders.

Would be interesting to see the contents of the dumptsers at the end of the day --somehow I don't think they'd want the liability of giving the left-over food to the homeless.

43 fluffy  Fri, Jun 27, 2008 11:08:07am

Seriously, if it's rotten taste isn't enough to make you eschew this product, the fact that soy is the active ingredient in most female hormone replacement therapies. So, let's load pre-pubescent Bobby and Johnny up on soy milk and then wonder why their voices haven't changed and why they aren't as tall as other boys their age. This is information I received from two different neuro-developmental therapists who have treated my son. Basically, soy milk is not the best thing in the world for your kids.

I was just up in Denver on business. That city seems to become more moonbatty with each visit.

Noticed an odd thing this time though. The gas prices seemed to be lower than they are here in Phoenix, which is unusual as Colorado gas taxes are higher than AZ's. There were quite a number of places where you could still find regular unleaded for well under $4.00 a gallon. Has Colorado placed it's gas taxes on hold or reduced them? Any of you Denver lizards know why this is so?

More guidance for those going to the convention in Denver, courtesy of the Colorado Department of Revenue:

Sales of Souvenir Merchandise related to 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado

It's expected vendors will be setting up temporary locations to sell merchandise during the 2008 Democratic National Convention (DNC), August 25-28. Anyone selling this type of souvenir merchandise in Colorado is required to have a Colorado sales tax license. You cannot sell merchandise unless you have a state sales tax license.

The sales tax rate to be charged on merchandise in Colorado depends on the city in which the sales are made. The total tax rate for each city in Colorado is different. The Pepsi Center, the site of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, is located in Denver. The total sales tax rate for general merchandise in Denver is 7.72 percent. However, 4.1 percent of the total is remitted to the State of Colorado Department of Revenue. The remaining 3.62 percent is remitted to the City and County of Denver Treasury Division. If you are planning on making sales in any other city, please check our Colorado Sales Tax Rates to find out what the total tax rate is in each city.

To obtain a State of Colorado sales tax license, complete the Colorado Business Registration (CR 0100 form). The sales tax license fee is $16 if purchased on or before June 30. From July 1 to December 31, the license fee is $12. Vendors must also pay a $50 deposit which will be refunded after $50 in state sales tax has been paid. Vendors should indicate the filing period will be seasonal and mark the months they anticipate making sales. On the registration form, please include the letters DNC in the business address.

In other words, make sure that the state gets its cut. Or else.

In promoting healthy eating habits, the Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include “at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white.”

When the Dems control both Houses and Obama is King, we can expect this type of shit to be written into law.

The "musician" Moby has said that he feeds his son soy milk for that reason - he hopes he'll be gay.

LOL. I think he misinterpreted what it means for a parent to want their children to be happy.

I hope he managed to find himself a highly fecund mate for that attempt. The latest that I read on that, a study seems to have shown that the later male offspring of women that are very fertile are more likely to be gay. It sort of explains why 'gay' has not been evolved out of humanity. It's a cross-purpose trait. The suggestion is that the same genes that make a female offspring very fertile may cause some of the later male offspring to be gay. (The later offspring, seems the earlier ones are not affected in the same way.)

You nailed it.

For anyone who is not well versed in the health care machine, every time a service is billed, the information is culled into codes.

Diagnostic codes, procedural codes, etc.

This information is mined for trends, utilization, etc.

I have no illusions whatsoever, if they get enough power, this will be a reality.

It is already decided under what terms a provider can treat a patient, and I shit you not, I just got off the phone minutes ago, with a national insurer, telling me that we could not admit a patient for a surgery, that "their" system only allows it for outpatient.

I was going to spinoff this article. Jammie already did.

To test whether celebratory balloons advertised as biodegradable actually will decompose, Ms. Robinson buried samples in a steaming compost heap. She hired an Official Carbon Adviser, who will measure the greenhouse-gas emissions of every placard, every plane trip, every appetizer prepared and every coffee cup tossed. The Democrats hope to pay penance for those emissions by investing in renewable energy projects.

Perhaps Ms. Robinson's most audacious goal is to reuse, recycle or compost at least 85% of all waste generated during the convention.

...But it's almost inevitable that principles, politics and profit will conflict. To wit: Coors Brewing Co., in Golden, Colo., will donate biofuel made from beer waste to power the convention's fleet of flex-fuel vehicles. A green star for the convention -- but it has rankled die-hard liberals, who boycotted Coors in the 1960s and '70s to protest hiring practices that they said discriminated against blacks, Latinos, women and gays. Heirs to the Coors fortune have long been active in conservative causes and Republican politics.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Civic leader Scott Nelson says he is as worried as anyone about global warming, but that does not make him happy to be one of the first North Americans to pay a carbon tax to curb climate change.

Nelson, mayor of Williams Lake, British Columbia, says record high energy prices mean that the levy, for all its good intentions, could not come at a worst time for residents in his community, a lumber and ranching town about 525 km (340 miles) north of Vancouver.

SNIP

The provincial government unveiled the tax in February, calling it a key element in a pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 33 percent by 2020.

The tax applies to nearly all fossil fuels, including gasoline and home heating fuel, starting at C$10 per tonne of carbon emissions in 2008 and increasing by C$5 a tonne annually for the next four years.

For drivers that will mean an additional 2.41 Canadian cents on a liter of gasoline (about 9.13 cents per U.S. gallon) starting on Tuesday. The current gas price in Vancouver, British Columbia's biggest city, is around C$1.40 a liter.

(I'm partial to the "juicy pear" Jelly Bellies -- they rock!)

Any bets on whether there'll be a Hemp Milk booth at the convention? (Friends, if you're unable to eat dairy products because of allergies, but find that traditional soy milk is much too pleasant-tasting and agreeable, then Hemp Milk may be just the solution you've been looking for!)

Until today, I had never heard of hemp milk. Of course, I had never heard of arguala(sp?) before Obama whined about it not too long ago.

Great News! (for the nearest Burger King!) A sharp reporter will monitor how much of this trendy "healthful" food gets thrown in the trash uneaten and report on the tremendous waste our social betters indulge in in the name of showing us how to live. That they couldn't stomach their own ideas when push came to shove is beside the point.

oooh I like your evil mind.

I was at the Red Sox game when John Effin' Kerry "threw" out the first pitch (into the dirt) on the eve of the DNC in 2004. Staffers were handing out Kerry signs to people walking in and around Yawkey Way and many people were throwing the signs into trash barrels. Word of this got around so then they had staffers digging them out of the trash barrels so nobody could take pictures.

Oh and did I mention the thunderous booing when he was announced and took the mound? :~)

Why can the dems be pro-choice about ending a life but not about living a life?

Living is hard and we have to do it "the good way" so that we, the only people in the world, can save the world. If the USA would only use less oil, the Chinese wouldn't want as much as their using and so, naturally, the whole oil boom would top out and come around the bell curve, soon we'd be back paying fifty cents a gallon. re: #133 CyanSnowHawk

It sort of explains why 'gay' has not been evolved out of humanity. It's a cross-purpose trait. The suggestion is that the same genes that make a female offspring very fertile may cause some of the later male offspring to be gay.

Just continuing OT for a minute -- the scenario Cyan describes is not the only hypothesis that has been put forth to explain how a "gay gene" could survive without being driven out of the population by natural selection.

Whether any of these particular hypotheses about a possible "gay gene" hold water, the more general point, that non-beneficial genetic traits can sometimes piggyback on highly beneficial traits, is neither new nor controversial in evolutionary biology.

Thus, anyone who claims that a "gay gene" would be totally impossible in evolutionary terms needs to take an undergraduate biology course.

This sucks...

Carrier Stranded In The Pacific

The May 22nd fire on the carrier USS George Washington, did more damage than was originally thought. It may be several months before the Washington can replace the USS Kitty Hawk in the western Pacific (with a home port in Japan). This change over was supposed to take place in August.

The fire broke out near a major ventilation conduit in the rear of the carrier. That conduit not only circulated air to compartments below the waterline, but also contained pipes carrying large numbers of electrical and communications cables. These lit up and before the fire was completely put out (it took twelve hours), over 120,000 meters (nearly 400,000 feet) of cables were damaged or destroyed. Over two percent of the ships 3,800 spaces (rooms) were damaged. Some of the spaces suffered severe damage (metal walls melted or seriously weakened), but the most troublesome damage was to the electrical and data cables. Thus the navy is still figuring out exactly when repairs can be completed and the 47 year old Kitty Hawk brought back to the United States for decommissioning. Even with the delay, the navy still expects to decommission the Kitty Hawk in January, 2009, as scheduled.

C'mon! Ya might as well have lobster tails and filet mignon.

As I understand it, last meal requests are limited to whatever the prison kitchen can make with the usual ingredients supplied to them from their regular vendors. This prevents an outside source from slipping something into a last meal.

Fried foods are bad for you. Red meat is bad for the environment. Range-fed chicken is OK for the environment but it's too expensive. We need all our corn for ethanol now that the other 3/4 of the crop has been flooded out. Rice is in dangerously short supply in Asia, none of that for the delegates. There's a water shortage in the West. Tomatoes can carry salmonella.

There was a episode of Penn and Tellers Bullshit where they filled several different companies water bottles from a garden hose and had a taste test. People were swearing certain brands still tasted better than others.

Sorry about my lousy memory but I watched a comedy show (was it Penn and Teller as well?) where a lady went to a moonbat gathering with a petition to have people ban water altogether. Of course she didn't say water, she used some scientific name for water that nobody recognized. She went on to say that it was responsible for so many deaths a year (she didnt mention to the moonbats that these statistics had to do with people drowning).

Anyway the moonbats ate it up (or should I say drank it up) and in a couple of short hours she had hundreds of signatures. Only at the end did she tell people that they had signed a petition to ban water. Even then the moonbats behaved like moonbats, instead of getting mad or being totally embarrased they were like "this is groovy"

What's happened to the concept of liberty? If I lose my right to choose (do I want bacon or oatmeal, fried chicken or sushi?), I tend to view that as a general threat to everyone's liberty. I don't believe it's anyone's right to decide what is good for me and coerce me into compliance. Liberty - freedom - allows me the right to choose what risks I care to take, i.e., if I'm stupid enough to hold a cup of hot coffee in my lap, it's my choice (and any resulting consequences are also mine - I wouldn't sue someone else for my own stupidity).

Freedom has never been "safe". I guess that's why so many seem willing to relinquish it in exchange for a nanny government.

This is information I received from two different neuro-developmental therapists who have treated my son. Basically, soy milk is not the best thing in the world for your kids.

Interesting that most things that the Dems attack and want to ban could be considered vices of the poor.

Poor tax, like the lotto.

It's true. I took my brother's four kids to McDonald's a few weeks ago and we were able to get dinner for less than $20. You can see how low income families fall into that trap.

Ever see a low income family shopping at Whole Foods? I can barely afford it.

On another note...

Britain just keeps outdoing itself for nutty manifestations of dhimmitude. In an age when terrorists are most likely to be Muslim, and these dogs are supposed to be helping find terrorists, the dogs won't touch Muslims. Dogs, after all, are unclean.

"Sniffer Dogs Offend Muslims," by Tom Whitehead in the Daily Express, June 27 (thanks to all who sent this in):

Police sniffer dogs trained to spot terrorists at railway stations may no longer come into contact with Muslim passengers – after complaints that it is against the suspects’ religion.

A report for the Transport Department has raised the prospect that the animals should only touch passengers’ luggage because it is considered “more acceptable”.

In the Muslim faith, dogs are deemed to be spiritually “unclean”. But banning them from touching passengers would severely restrict their ability to do their job. The report follows trials of station security measures in the wake of the 2005 London suicide bomb attacks. In one trial, some female Muslims said the use of a body scanner was also unacceptable because it was tantamount to being forced to strip.

British Transport Police last night insisted it would still use sniffer dogs – which are trained to detect explosives – with any passengers regardless of faith, but handlers would remain aware of “cultural sensitivities”.

Critics said the complaints were just the latest example of minority religions trying to force their rules and morals on British society.

Well, duh, as the great philosopher once said.

Would it be too much for them just to offer a few specially labeled healthy choices and let the people decide? Of course it would.

Because nobody will pay the premium for a 'healthy choice' when there is a lower priced alternative that tastes better. Better a $5 ham and Swiss than an $8 sprout sandwich.

I've mentioned this before, but I gave up meat for lent in 1991 and it was HELL. I got sick and found out I was anemic when I went to give blood.

Never again!

One of my teenaged daughter's friends is a vegan. I tell my daughter that some people are able to do it but many people do not have the kind of body that can handle that type of diet and stay healthy. I've learned from experience that my body needs meat.

I disagree with imposing such a strict diet on children. I had a friend who was a vegetarian but she made chicken for her son and they both consumed real milk, eggs, etc. (She was divorced; his dad wasn't a vegetarian, so he got red meat there.) Children need a certain amount of fat and protein in their diet.

Did you see the article in the UK's Daily Mail about vegan diets not being suitable for young children? (It's a no-brainer for me, but not for everyone, I guess.)

How a strict vegan diet made my children ill

Good heavens! And the article indicates that this is far from uncommon.
*a 12-year old girl in Glasgow (parents are well known vegans) with severe rickets.
*a nine-year old boy who had no energy - his mother had him on a no carb diet.
*a little boy with "constant diarrhoea" - his parents had him on a high-fibre diet.

Geez.

I guess we are going to have to start rationing peanut and canola oils. Can't have those pleasure loving Americans having some fried oysters when they should be eating arugula, eh Senator Obama?

re: #112 faraway

Well, you cant fry arugula anyway.

If you can fry ice cream, you can fry anything.

It occurs to me that there will be a lot of hungry people there, who will be sneaking in their fried food as well.

Maybe there will be a riot this year. But it will be at KFC or Popeye's or Arthur Treacher's.
