The real persuaders are our appetites, our fears and above all our vanity. The skillful propagandist stirs and coaches these internal persuaders.

Absurd as it may seem, I'm now plowing through the hundreds of emails I got in 2006 about my "Reuters Photo Fraud" page -- yes, replying to people two years after it's too late -- and updating my essay here and there. I just opened an email I got on August 18, 2006, laughed aloud, and made this little addition at the very bottom of the page, in the "Additional Links" section:

Not a link, but a funny final footnote nonetheless: zombietime reader Philip S. points out that if you rearrange the letters of

"Adnan Hajj from inside Reuters, Inc."

you get

"Man 'errs' for jihad; End an injustice!"

I only wish I had opened that email sooner!

Accidental fungus leads to promising cancer drug

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A drug developed using nanotechnology and a fungus that contaminated a lab experiment may be broadly effective against a range of cancers, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday.

The drug, called lodamin, was improved in one of the last experiments overseen by Dr. Judah Folkman, a cancer researcher who died in January. Folkman pioneered the idea of angiogenesis therapy -- starving tumors by preventing them from growing blood supplies.

Lodamin is an angiogenesis inhibitor that Folkman's team has been working to perfect for 20 years. Writing in the journal Nature Biotechnology, his colleagues say they developed a formulation that works as a pill, without side-effects.

At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal, from which God disposes our lives, which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our own mind or the brutalities of our own will. This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty is the pure glory of God in us. It is, so to speak, His name written in us…It is like a pure diamond, blazing with the invisible light of heaven. It is in everybody, and if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely.

Thomas Merton.

Now, this point is inaccessible to the blandishments of which Eric Hoffer speaks; let's try to get there.

why do you want a homepage?

I just want a nice handy start page when I bring up firefox. One that lists everything I check each day all in one spot so I don't have to chase them all over the web. The fact it has a public page wasn't real important to me, though maybe it will help someone visiting it get educated on reality.

I was using google/ig to keep everything together but can't support them in any way any more.

RSS ticker is ok but it gets bogged down with the sheer number of things I like to check.

Saw an Obamaton out shopping yesterday with a big "CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN" on her shirt. Or was it "Hope we can believe in"? And then there were at least two cars with Obama '08 stickers, one of which spoofed the "Got Milk?" ad, by saying "Got Hope?". This sticker was across the trunk lid from "01-29-09 Bush's last day!".

It must be blissful to be so dumb as to think that the Messiah has come, that his ascension has a date attached to it, and that all will be right with the world if you just believe.

17 injured by live ammo at open day

FOUR people including a child were in a critical condition today after live bullets were used instead of blanks during a French special forces open day, army and regional officials said.

Seventeen people were injured in total.

Fifteen civilians and two soldiers were injured in the incident, of which the details remained unclear, involving a demonstration by members of a marines parachute regiment of hostage liberation exercises, a regional authority, Bernard Lemaire, said.

Four of the 17 were seriously injured, with two described as critical following "incomprehensible'' scenes at the barracks near Carcassone, in the country's south-west.

According to local authorities, five children were among the injured.

Five helicopters, 11 firefighters' first-aid vehicles and two ambulances rushed to the scene to help the injured.

One soldier had been detained, although no explanation was immediately forthcoming for why the wrong ammunition was loaded into weapons.

In honor of that last thread, I am watching "Saving Private Ryan"

I make it a point to watch the first ten minutes on every June 6th. Curiously, I find myself more affected by the anniversary as time goes on, not less.

I sometimes worry that we may not have that kind of pure courage in us anymore. The guts to stand at the front of that boat, look up at the gates of Mordor, and say "Let's go!"

I started watching the Discovery channel NASA missions program today (I had recorded it last week, hadn't got around to watching it) and it occurred to me that it's entirely possible that the high point of American achievement was the mid-1960s, give or take a few years. Since then we have better tech and more toys, but has anything really gotten better?

The lady roommate said things were much better for women now. I suppose so.

Good grief.

It dawns on me they can henceforth spin every news story in the world the same way. Just keep the TV news projected on that section of The Wall at all times, and then instead of reporting on any particular news event, they can simply report on the Palestianians' reactions to it, while simultaneously making us all feed sad about the wall.

Examples:

-------------------------

Palestinians watch with excitement as the Mars Rover discovers life on the surface of the Red Planet, as images of the strange Martian creatures are projected on the Apartheid Wall in the West Bank refugee camp of Aida, near Bethlehem.

...or...

Palestinian watch Lindsay Lohan as she is dragged off to jail for punching a photographer, in the West Bank refugee camp of Aida, near Bethlehem.

...or...

Palestinians can barely keep awake, stupefied with boredom as they camp in front of our cameras for the 34th consecutive day to watch a kitten being rescued from a tree in Poughkeepsie, New York, the scene being projected as usual on the evil Separation Wall of Doom in the West Bank refugee camp of Aida, near Bethlehem.

There was just one young lady - and just one scooter.

"Well I wanted to put peace on the map," she says.

So she is literally driving around the nation, in the shape of a peace sign.

re: #93 lone_wolf_in_illinois

Although I don't normally like to plug my own blog on this site, I thought that I would upload my birth certificate from Hawaii for comparison to Obama's. I did block out a few of my personal items, but it does show the front and back.

Interesting, very interesting......

re: #86 Cartman

Maybe I'll try to post a screenshot of my Speed Dial desktop on Photobucket and link to it here. Then you can get an idea of how it works.

Cool, just installed it. I'll check how it works when I restart firefox. Did you look at the link I left to my netvibes screen?

3 McCain signs on my block, including my own. Not bad for SF.

Drooling in agony at the extended boredom inflicted on them by the images on the Apartheid Wall, Jordyptian refugees calling themselves "Palestinian" writhe and moan, asking for permission to go potty or otherwise relieve themselves of their self-imposed idiocy coupled with media demands that they prostrate themselves before the only remaining barrier between themselves and Humans With a Life!

/LMAO, Zomboid!

actually

staying away from the computer makes me feel more relaxed

I'm the opposite, the computer relaxes me after the stresses of the day and kids.

Well, I don't live in her district!

But I was talking about presidential signs only. It's a blizzard of Obama Blue in these parts.

Rare is the house without Obama paraphernalia.

ROFLMAO!

You saying the kos kids lack a refined sense of humor?

None at all, apparently. Within minutes I had turned an entire thread against me. I could see the purple in their faces. I wish I had a sock puppet at the time, I could have give some of them heart attacks.

I pass by her "campaign HQ" every day on Mission St. in San Francisco. From my vantage point on the express bus, it looks like an empty storefront plastered over with her campaign posters, and little else.

Wow! Mindbending. I won't ask specifics, but you must live in a very unusual corner of The City!

OT

so last week I was at Cedar Sinai in LA for a test, and had to fill out some form

one question was to state my ethnicity

the choice was :

hispanic or non hispanic

if you can imagine that

and that is in a Jewish Hospital, with mezuzah on every doorpost

The quotation from up top:

The real persuaders are our appetites, our fears and above all our vanity. The skillful propagandist stirs and coaches these internal persuaders. — Eric Hoffer

But, oh, when you yourself are aware of such, and coach your own self to beware! :)

If I did a one man 2nd Amend March through Seattle, what would the headline say?

After covering that, they should send a crew over to the one legged man ass kicking contest......I bet that is more exciting.

Drudge reports that NYT will be running story on hunt for Bin Laden in Pakistan including internal disputes and discussions in White House. Also mentions Special ops and forces going in undercover. I read the international page that has it tonight. No wonder the WH is pissed over this. Proving once again that NYT=anti-American traitor.

Weirdly, since my brief stay here in the U.S. I've probably noticed more Ron Paul stickers/paraphernalia/graffiti than any other political signage. Perhaps I'm just more perceptive to displays of pure insanity..?

I was in greater metropolitan Blacksburg, VA today. I only saw 3 Obama stickers on the campus of Va Tech. One was on a Mercedes & had a faculty sticker. There was a McCain sticker on a Ford Focus w/ a student sticker and one on an old Toyota w/ a staff sticker.

Too early to draw conclusions, I think!
