The directors of the firm hired to
continue the credits after the other
people had been sacked, wish it to
be known that they have just been
sacked.

The credits have been completed
in an entirely different style at great
expense and at the last minute.

It's a fine afternoon in NYC, and a fine time for an open thread.

Hello lizards!

I grabbed the top bunk during basic training. Even though I wasn't dumped out of it by the drill sergeant I still regretted it.

Well, yeah...cuz' the guy on the bottom bunk makes the guy on the top's bunk every morning, because we're in Germany. If we were in Italy, the guy on the top makes the guy on the bottom's bunk, but we're not. We're in Germany.

If you are interested, please email me. I will be sending out details beginning next week, after you've all had a chance to recover from the Glorious 4th.

Microsoft to stop selling Windows XP on Monday

Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.

Good advice, like the rules of stretcher carrying:

1) Take the feet
2) Go first.

31 itellu3times  Mon, Jun 30, 2008 11:59:47am

On the subject of the economy:

I went for dinner last night at a long-established, very popular, large-scale local restaurant. Been going there for twenty years. Almost always have to wait if you get there anywhere near dinner time.

Last night it was barely half-full.

Never seen that before. I asked the host, the waitress, the bakery lady all, how long it had been that slow. They all said, vaguely, for a while, most of this year. I've probably been there a few times already this year, and it hadn't been *that* slow.

OTOH, the local Cheesecake Factory seem to still do pretty good business. So, question for the dining lizards, have you seen any other remarkable slowdowns, anywhere out there? Thanx.

More on Obama:

"I have found, for the first time, my patriotism challenged — at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears about who I am and what I stand for," he said before a crowd of a few hundred people at the Truman Memorial Building here. "I will never question the patriotism of others in this campaign. And I will not stand idly by when I hear others question mine."

No, he'll just let others do his dirty work for him, and they get the privilege of being tossed under the bus.

I noticed it with the start (and continueance) of the boating season here on the East Coast. Father's Day, a nornally outstanding day for boaters, was freaky quiet. I'd say there were 24% of the boats out there that there normally were.

As far as dining out, can't say I noticed a difference around here yet.....

Maybe it's just people budgeting to have more money for gas, less for going out.

As Obama said, the rest of the world didn't like Americans driving around & going to restaurants! Something had to give.

Several restaurants around where I work have been showing slower business. They first lowered quality and quantity to save from raising prices, but have had to raise them without re-establishing the quality. Fast food joints are the hardest hit, I think. Seems as if a lot more people are brown-bagging it.

Nothing to do any with any topic, but pretty funny if you're over 50:

This is from newshound Dave Barry's colonoscopy journal:
Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0500 (Central Daylight Time)

.... I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenteritis, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis . Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner. I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he said,! becaus e my brain was shrieking, quote, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!' I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription for a product called 'MoviPrep,' which comes in a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will discuss MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall into the hands of America's enemies.

I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous. Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I began my preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavor. Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder together in a one-liter plastic jug, then you fill it with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a liter is about 32 gallons.) Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.

The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humor, state that after you drink it, 'a loose watery bowel movement may result.' This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.

MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but, have you ever seen a space shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet.

After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep. The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I was thinking, 'What If I spurt on Andy?' How do you apologize to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough.

At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said.
Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than whe! n you a re actually naked.

Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my left Hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that some people put vodka In their MoviPrep. At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in Full Fire Hose Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house.

Colonoscopy journal continued:

When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room, Where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere. I was seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something up to the needle in my hand. There was music playing in the room, and I realized that the song was 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA I Remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen' has to be the least appropriate.

'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy, from somewhere behind me. 'Ha Ha,' I said. And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for more than a decade. If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly! what i t was like.

I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, ABBA was yelling 'Dancing Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine,' and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood. Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that It was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors. I have never been prouder of an internal organ.

Good afternoon, all...

Well, I believe my computer is finally fixed. After about 17 hours on the phone with the techies and them finally sending one to the house to install a new motherboard and CPU, this thing seems to be back to normal. I've got this video playing in the background, and it is playing flawlessly while I type this. Before, all I had to do was move the mouse (with no other apps open) and the damned thing would start stopping/starting while it played.

Will definitely open a bunch of new stuff up and test it more severely, though.

Thanx.

Outback here was really slow recently. I've noticed the wait at all of those type of dining places has been drastically reduced.

Of course after going to Outback I discovered high prices, bad food, horrible service, and a guaranteed gratuity even though we were two parties of 4 and not a party of 8. I won't be going back.

It has mango and almond trees, soft white sand, turquoise waters, and a perfect breeze. It looks like a secret paradise island. It feels like a secret paradise island.
But, actually, it's Haiti, the poorest country in the hemisphere.

I have trouble reconciling how truly good Daniel Craig is at the role with the facts that 1) he has told the press that he really hates guns, and 2) IIRC he had to learn how to drive a stick shift for the first movie. (I have a little trouble believing the latter one... a Brit who couldn't drive a stick shift?)

Several restaurants around where I work have been showing slower business. They first lowered quality and quantity to save from raising prices, but have had to raise them without re-establishing the quality. Fast food joints are the hardest hit, I think. Seems as if a lot more people are brown-bagging it.

Now that you mention it, one mid-level chain (Islands) here in Los Angeles has been in a horrible slow-down all this year, hey I stopped going there, they raised their prices once too often, *and* started making changes to the old recipes and portion sizes. I understand why, but they exceeded their perceived value at some point. Also, the national California Pizza Kitchen (CPKI), has been fiddling their prices and portions, particularly the portions, for two years now, and lost my business last year.

FWIW, the local place (Katella Deli) made only a small bump in their prices last year some time, AFAIK, and also AFAIK the portions are unchanged.

I keep telling my favorite little Greek restaurant guy that he needs to raise his prices to keep up. Well, that's why it's such a little Greek restaurant, I guess, but that guy knows how to broil a chicken like nobody else! Wish I was still working on that side of town, oh well.

re: #205 Mars Needs Neocons

I dashed this back to him.

Its nonesence. His own speach proves why we can't "win this war" because you can't win a war of ideals with guns.

Here we have folks who have proven over and over through action - terrorist acts world over, each attack more deadly then the next, with eyes on acquisition of nuclear weapons and you don’t see a threat? It’s a war of ideals? I guess maybe you think World War 2, headed by Nazi Germany, fascist Italy and imperialistic Japan was merely a war of ideals too? This is a war and if al Qaeda or faction can get a WMD they will use it on an American city. Somehow you must understand this? Where were you when they struck on 9/11? Madrid? Bali? London? Tanzania? USS Cole?

Also, he's way off on Iran. Iran is a secular country and every government study has shown that there is no nuclear weapons program there. Iran is all about business with Russia and France and we can't stand for it because it cuts in on our oil market.

Iran is NOT a secular country. Iran is a theocracy with a Supreme Leader, the Ayatollah Khamenei

Iranian’s practice the religion Shi’a Islam, and have since 1979 when Iran officially became an Islamic Republic after the overthrow of the Shah.

There was one single State Department Study that came to the absurd conclusion that there’s no proof that Iran is building. The study was prepared by liberals in the State Dept to embarrass Bush.

And every time Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he’s close to a weapon, and the IAEA Chief says they’re six months to a year away from completion they’re lying? The day Iran has its weapon it will launch on Israel.

Tried an Outback once, couple of years ago, prices seemed high for what it was, but it was better than some of the other low-buck steak houses around.

Interesting question about waiting - have to wonder how much actual business is lost when the wait is less. Queueing theory and all that. Then there's the case where the wait is still long, because they told two waitresses and one cook not to come in. But for sure, when the tables are empty at prime time, there's a problem.

A newly appointed European Ambassador (I believe a Dane), went to present his credentials. To impess him, Cristophe marched a squad of soldiers off the wall, to their deaths on the rocks below.
The new Ambassador, qiuite sensibly, immediately retuned to the harbor & sailed home.

A recommended patch from MS fixed it - there was an issue in a previous patch that caused the problem.

Are you current on the required and recommended patches?

Check the error logs to see if the network adapter might be failing and auto-recovering (driver issue) - you would see an interruption sooner in IE / Firefox than in something like messenger unless you are actively having a conversation. Also make sure that your settings for the browsers are using LAN settings (if not dialup) and on automatically detect settings.

re: #31 itellu3times

I have noticed a slow down in my business. A couple of customers drive trucks or trailers and they are being crippled by diesel prices. A few waitresses have complained of small tips and my retail is slow. People are paying in cash and wanting cheaper products.

However, my customers in construction have been busy. During my commute, I see more work trucks on the road. I called to have a new sign made for my new location and 3 places said they couldn't even come out for 4 weeks to give an estimate.

In my opinion, the construction end of it seems to be picking up. (my road rage has been more frequent because my continual bad luck of getting stuck behind dump trucks and contractors on cell phones) The restaurant and retail business seems to be slow. Its a cycle. Now that the construction is picking up other places will normalize in a couple of months. Everyone has been pinched and now we are feeling it in the wallet. This all started with construction coming to a halt because they raised interest rates. Now that the rates are more steady people feel more at ease to buy and sell homes.

Oily Joe Melman, who invents a virus that causes people to drive around endlessly only stopping for an occasional bag of cheeseburgers and fries. Bond must stop him before the oceans rise and drown London.

Oh, sorry about that, they are going to put Alice in Wonderland up there anyway, so we needn't bother.

I liked an account from The Immaculate Invasion about one particular bit of improvising done by Green Beret medics in Haiti in 1993. They had set up a health clinic for civilians. Plenty of room for improvement in health care in Haiti, of course, but one thing they kept having to deal with was parents who would present the medics with their baby and insist the child was in danger of being attacked by evil spirits (or werewolves? Something like that). The SF guys would take a chemical glowstick, snip off one end, and draw a cross on the child's forehead. So the kid would have a glow-in-the-dark cross on his head, which the medics assured the parents would stave off the spirits/werewolves. The people apparently became mightily impressed by this, and came to the conclusion that the SF guys had the best juju on the island.

Thanx.

My friends and Noticed the same thing the other night at a local restaurant in my small town. This is a great place that's always packed on Saturday night because it's got good food and choices are limited anyway.

It was half full.

Gas prices maybe? Not for local things but who knows.

Obama Calls President Bill Clinton

ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Sarah Amos Reports: Amid reports of tension between Sen. Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton, the Obama campaign announced Monday the presumptive Democratic nominee called Bill Clinton at 11amET this morning from Kansas City, Missouri while enroute to his event in Independence, Mo.

The former president was in New York, where he has an office in Harlem and a home in Chappaqua, NY. They spoke for 20 minutes. Obama asked the former president to campaign with him and for him. The Obama campaign said Bill Clinton told Obama he is excited about that prospect.

“Senator Obama had a terrific conversation with President Clinton and is honored to have his support in this campaign," said Obama spokesperson Bill Burton.

"He has always believed that Bill Clinton is one of this nation’s great leaders and most brilliant minds, and looks forward to seeing him on the campaign trail and receiving his counsel in the months to come."

The fence around the public demonstration zone outside the Democratic National Convention will be chicken wire or chain link, authorities revealed in U.S. District Court today.

That may allow protestors to be seen and heard by delegates going in and out of the Pepsi Center during the convention.

'X-ray plot' against Ahmadinejad

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the target of an "X-ray radiation plot" during his trip to Rome for the UN food summit earlier this month, the official IRNA news agency reported on Monday.

The news agency quoted Iran's ambassador to Italy, Abolfazl Zohrehvand, as saying that the plot was to use extreme radiation in the place where Ahmadinejad was due to stay.

The 1970s marked the era where plot, dialogue, intelligent camera work, decent art direction, and all considerations of length were expunged from the movies.

It was as if a Stupid Ray swept the film industry. It probably did, in the form of cocaine.

Daughter sat in the back seat, and hated seat belts...we would hear the re-assuring click...and a few minutes later, her brother who was 18 months younger, would yell 'Mummy, she took her seat belt off!' NY Grampa went to the side of the road, and gave her the lecture, and refused to drive again until her belt went on and stayed on.

Now? She is so careful with the 22 month old. I reminded her a few weeks ago about the bad old days, and she actually looked at me aghast, as she had forgotten.

Then she was laughing, and asked me never to tell the grandson! ;)

When I had #4, we got a station wagon with a rear seat that the kids called the 'way back'.

The first? In my parents' car, he sat between them, in his car seat, with a steering wheel!

The good old days..but think of all the safety improvements.

Still combing through my old emails. I got the following one from "Tomo" about my Reuters Photo Fraud essay:

You make fair observations. Yes, photographers have used dramatization devices and taken fewer risks in dangerous areas than they would have us believe. Yes there has been outsourcing to stringers with even lower standards than their editors. Yes that’s wrong. But the cries of indignation from the public ring a little hollow, since it is our own voracious appetites for the ever more dramatic images of suffering that fuel this process. And bear in mind that although your own investigation focuses only on coverage of Israeli outrages, photographic ‘enhancement’ has happened with coverage of many events over the past few years. Bad practice slips into every professional field. Evidence of misuse of editing tools and rehashing of old photographs is rampant and is fortunately now, thanks in large part to exposes like your own, being stamped out. However, I repeat, this does not only happen in spheres where Israel is engaged in foul deeds and it does not constitute an anti-Israeli plot. You’d need to watch that line of thought and apply some of the investigative rigour inward.

The child who owed nothing to Israel or to the sophistry of Israel’s media campaign, is no less dead and the awful man in the green helmet did not kill her. The bombed city is still bombed. Would that that had been a photographers ‘hoax’. The ambulance is strafed and we know that Israel has targeted ambulances in the past, so your technical arguments about what the dirty tricks brigade of the IDF actually hit this one with are not all that relevant. The rubble of people’s homes is no less rubble just because it was bombed only once rather than three times. The 54+ women and girls are no less missed by loved ones because a mannequin was crudely placed in front of the place of their murder. No more than the tens of thousands killed elsewhere in the same campaign. Etc. Don’t loose sight of the wood

Here is the response I just sent him (fisking style):

The public is not crying out for fraudulent bloody images. They are crying out for the truth. Your argument is ridiculous: you're basically saying that because human beings are inherently drawn to excitement, then journalists are therefore not to be blamed for fabricating falsehoods, since the temptation to tell a popular story is too great.

Besides, the public is not an undifferentiated morass: only some people want to see photos of Israeli villainy; I certainly don't. And it is to please that particular anti-Israel audience, not people opposed to Hezbollah, that the media concocts falsehoods.

Please provide documentation and/or proof of your claims. As I know better than anyone, it's one thing to casually claim bias on the part of your political opponents -- and quite another to demonstrate it conclusively. Show me some examples of mainstream media fraudulence in favor of Israel. And in other areas where fraud has been demonstrated completely unrelated to Israel, it almost always has an anti-America/anti-Western slant.

I personally know hundreds of journalists. Every single one of them is a left-winger, ranging from mildly left-wing to extreme left-wing. The entire tenor of the media complex these days, with only a few exceptions, shares this bias. The anti-Israel aspect is in fact only one small part of a larger problem.

The child who owed nothing to Israel or to the sophistry of Israel’s media campaign, is no less dead and the awful man in the green helmet did not kill her.

We don't know that. That's the whole point. We in fact don't know what really happened.

We do know that Hezbollah built rocket launchers inside apartment buildings and in private homes, for the very purpose of using the civilians inside as either human shields, or, barring that, using their resulting corpses as propaganda tools. The man in the green helmet is most likely a Hezbollah propagandist, and Hezbollah forced Lebanese civilians to have rocket launchers in private buildings, and Hezbollah then used those launchers to fire powerful weaponry at Haifa and other places in Israel  at random, and as a result Israel had no choice but to take out the launchers - -and in the process kill civilians, which is exactly what Hezbollah wanted to happen, since they could then parade the bodies in front of the cameras. So I could just as easily argue that the man in the green helmet, and his cohorts, did in fact cause th death of the child shown in the photo.

The bombed city is still bombed. Would that that had been a photographers ‘hoax’.

As pointed out, the "hoax" part comes from the fact that the bombing was exaggerated by the media (and Hezbollah).

The ambulance is strafed

No proof of that. And if it was strafed, it was strafed long before this present conflict (possibly used as target practice in the dump), then dragged out as a propaganda piece.

and we know that Israel has targeted ambulances in the past,

Link? Prove that statement. I've never seen any evidence of that.

so your technical arguments about what the dirty tricks brigade of the IDF actually hit this one with are not all that relevant.

"Dirty tricks brigade"? Again, I ask for proof. I deal with verifiable facts, you're just spouting opinions and conspiracy theories and repeating the very media lies I've debunked.

The rubble of people’s homes is no less rubble just because it was bombed only once rather than three times. The 54+ women and girls are no less missed by loved ones because a mannequin was crudely placed in front of the place of their murder. No more than the tens of thousands killed elsewhere in the same campaign. Etc. Don’t loose sight of the wood for the trees.

I'm not making any claims about the rest of the war. I'm simply focusing of some very specific instances on media malfeasance.

I've never seen Streamers, but since it was evidently a Hollywood movie about anti-gay prejudice, I'm just gonna take a wild guess that the consciousness-raising was carried out with the same unpreachy subtlety that Stanley Kramer displayed in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

(Only in this case, it would be more like Guess Who's Coming in Matthew Modine's Mouth.)

Frankly, the thing is such a mess (and I admit I've never watched anything remotely close to the entire pic, it's too painful) that only now, reading the imdb review, did I learn it was supposed to be about "anti-gay prejudice". Mostly it's just a bunch of guys screaming, crying, and throwing punches in a barracks. You really can't tell what the f**k it's supposed to be about (except that all US military are violent, drunken brutes, apparently).

British student gets credit for expletive on exam

LONDON - A British high school student received credit for writing nothing but a two-word obscenity on an exam paper because the phrase expressed meaning and was spelled correctly.

The Times newspaper on Monday quoted examiner Peter Buckroyd as saying he gave the student — who wrote an expletive starting with f, followed by the word "off" — two points out of a possible 27 for the English paper.

"It would be wicked to give it zero because it does show some very basic skills we are looking for, like conveying some meaning and some spelling," Buckroyd was quoted as saying.

I ought to sue, as the 44 year old said 'cowabunga!' when he was 9 or 10! I wonder what the origin is.

When there were only 2 kids, he had a bed and daughter was in a crib. He had a fever of about 104.5...can't do the metric, alas. I was in the kitchen, and heard a thud, then screams..he had been jumping on his bed, and fell off, on his head. Luckily my husband walked in at the same moment I ran into the room. Head wounds bleed profusely, and I kept my RN's demeanor somehow, and sat him in hubby's lap, and cleaned him up...a scalp wound only, thank G-d. A neighbor came in to stay with infant daughter, and we rushed to our pediatrician..hubby had called. He put in sutures, and we had to wake him up once an hour during the night. He was fine, but I still shudder over 40 years later.

Enjoy the revival!
Norman Jewison, what a great director.
Sheeesh, I just like old musicals, period.
People made such great movies during the "Great" Depression and WWII, I can't understand nor will I support today's bad stuff.

I will, if it comes to the states, from London..but they have a bad habit of changing musicals before they come here. I saw so many over the years, in both London and Toronto, where they were the same, and the few we saw again in NYC were altered to what I guess they thought were American tastes.

Not the same!

Jewison? One of the very best. he is now 81 years of age.

I feel exactly the way you do re the theater and also the quality, or lack thereof, for about the past decade. Too many special effects in movoes, almost no musicals, etc. I do not go, as I am disabled, and watch things on TV...I end up changing channels most of the time. We live in a NYC suburb, and the reality is that getting to the theater will probably be too hard to do.

Chaim Topol has quite a CV.

Yipes! I should have taken 'Grumpy Old lady' as my nic!

I don't know about you, but those are four words I would never put together unless I was doing some serious drugs. Consider the drugs the CEO who ok'd this project must have taken to commit the $$$ to back it. It was a success, was years ago but the whole concept still boggles my mind. It shows to go ya, don't ever ask me about movie concepts since I don't have a clue because I don't use drugs.

Lizards ought to love the 1970 great movie version of "Fiddler on the Roof"--for a musical, it has it all:

chosen people, emotion, history (cuts marxists & czars to ribbons), is pro-America...what's not to like?

As an interesting double feature, try Fiddler on the Roof and 1970's The Boys in the Band. The first one has Leonard Frey as the mousy, bookish tailor Motl Kamzoil, while the second has Frey as the second-most-angst-ridden homosexual in Greenwich Village. (By movie's end, the neurotic Jewish homo comes out slightly ahead of the neurotic Catholic homo, but just barely.)

And Topol rocks. He rocks. That's what I'm talking about.

Better yet, a triple feature with Flash Gordon, which has Topol as Dr. Zarkoff. (Plus, Flash Gordon manages the neat trick of being fifty times as gay as The Boys in the Band, a movie in which 8 out of the 9 central characters are homosexual men, several played by openly gay actors.)

Buzz, it seems to me that the music of the Doigts de l'Homme is both toe-tapping enough and modern enough to support a songbook-type renovation. American jazz became too much a harmonic and formal exercise -- it lost both singers and dancers. That can change.

re: #679 buzzsawmonkey

The Boys in the Band was vilified unrelentingly by the early gay liberationists. I don't know whether it has since been "rehabilitated," but it remains a superb play with a number of painfully accurate insights.

From an NY Times review of the 1996 stage revival:

All that self-hating angst; all those demoralizing confessions: not exactly supportive images for a minority struggling to become visible. The cultural historian Vito Russo described "Boys" as having the same relation to the gay experience as "Green Pastures" did to that of blacks. Even worse, the Catholic Film Newsletter approved of the 1970 movie version, saying it "comments with wit and passion on the desolation and waste which chill this way of life."

Vito Russo was the author of The Celluloid Closet, which later became a film documentary of the same name, and the Times review above gives a somewhat misleading picture of how Russo felt about BitB -- he actually described it as "not positive, but fair," and overall a mix of minstrel-y stereotypes AND painfully accurate insights.

On the other hand, I think that the blurb from the Catholic Film Newsletter should be quoted in all-caps on every Boys in the Band DVD -- you can't buy praise like that!

Sadly, I can't find Pauline Kael's famous review of the movie online. In the original published version, she said the movie's characters were like a "1940s bomber-crew movie," with a lineup of archetypes that Kael listed as: "a butch fag, a nellie fag, a black fag," etc. In subsequent reprints of Kael's review, every instance of "fag(got)" was changed to "gay man" or "homosexual."

(Kael may or may not have been homophobic -- mainly, she just hated director William Friedkin!)

I forgot to mention that the long-term reputation of Boys in the Band (the movie, not the stageplay) may have suffered further by association with Friedkin, whose 1980 film Cruising was the target of massive knee-jerk denunciations from gay activists.

I saw Boys in the Band, it's a "gay" movie with a "homophobic" message. The only straight character, challenged to "come out of the closet" by making a phone call to "the person you love most," trumps the whole gay crowd and calls his ex-wife.

Vito Russo's writing always read as though he were at war with himself: for the most part, he spouted the prevailing gay-lib political line

The final third (or so) of the film Celluloid Closet was the least interesting, for this very reason: the movies covered in this section were too much shaped by gay-lib politics. The bad old days under the Hays Code, when homosexual themes had to be presented as subtext (if presented at all), made for more eye-opening discussion.

For viewers too young to remember Red River or to know of Montgomery Clift's re-puta-ción, this astounding gem of an exchange between Clift and John Ireland is worth the rental price of Celluloid Closet all by itself:

IRELAND: That's a good-looking gun you were about to use back there. Can I see it? [Clift hands his gun to Ireland] And I'll bet you'd like to see mine! [Ireland hands his gun to Clift] Nice! Awful nice! You know, there are only two things more beautiful than a good gun: a Swiss watch or a woman from anywhere. [pregnant pause] You ever had a good Swiss watch?

CLIFT: [gesturing to his gun in Ireland's sweaty grasp] Go ahead! Try it!

(Remember, this is a 1948 cowboy movie with John Wayne.)

Dude, sometimes a revolver is just a revolver.

Sometimes, but throw in Montgomery Clift and it's not just subtextually gay, it's Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boatride gay.

However, here's the Red River scene in question (from a Spanish-subtitled version -- the first hit that YouTube turned up), so you can judge for yourself.

A final word on the homos-in-Hollywood digression before I log off to rustle up some chow:

This wikipedia article about the etymological development of ''gay'' as a 20th-century slang term for male homosexuals discusses Cary Grant's famous and controversial line "I just went gay all of a sudden" from Bringing Up Baby.

The controversy is whether Grant, who ad-libbed the line, intended gay to mean "male homosexual" or in the older slang sense of "frivolous libertine" -- in 1938 Hollywood circles, most people would've known the "libertine" sense, but the "homosexual" sense was still rather new and obscure. Given Grant's personal life, he could've meant it either way.

Anyway, the wiki article is interesting for that, and even more so for this 1857 British satirical cartoon using ''gay'' as slang/code for female prostitutes.
