And Now: The Dreaded Cute Puppy Dog of Blasphemy

Tue, Jul 1, 2008 at 8:45:54 am PDT

Now causing seething in British Islamic communities: Trainee police puppy Rebel.

The British police should have known better than to take such an obviously blasphemous photograph, sure to offend and enrage members of the Religion of Peace™. What were they thinking?

A postcard featuring a cute puppy sitting in a policeman’s hat advertising a Scottish police force’s new telephone number has sparked outrage from Muslims.

Tayside Police’s new non-emergency phone number has prompted complaints from members of the Islamic community.

The choice of image on the Tayside Police cards - a black dog sitting in a police officer’s hat - has now been raised with Chief Constable John Vine.

The advert has upset Muslims because dogs are considered ritually unclean and has sparked such anger that some shopkeepers in Dundee have refused to display the advert.

Dundee councillor Mohammed Asif said: “My concern was that it’s not welcomed by all communities, with the dog on the cards. It was probably a waste of resources going to these communities. They (the police) should have understood. Since then, the police have explained that it was an oversight on their part, and that if they’d seen it was going to cause upset they wouldn’t have done it.”

Councillor Asif, who is a member of the Tayside Joint Police Board, said that the force had a diversity adviser and was generally very aware of such issues. He raised the matter with Mr Vine at a meeting of the board.

The chief constable said he was unaware of the concerns and that the force had not sought to cause any upset but added he would look into the matter.

From Bukhari Vol. 1, #490

Narrated 'Aisha: "The things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, "Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people)." I said, "You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away, for I disliked to face him.""

From Muslim Number 1032

Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of 'Allah said: When any one of you stands for prayer and there is a thing before him equal to the back of the saddle that covers him and in case there is not before him (a thing) equal to the back of the saddle, his prayer would be cut off by (passing of an) ass, woman, and black Dog. I said: O Abu Dharr, what feature is there in a black dog which distinguish it from the red dog and the yellow dog? He said: O, son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah as you are asking me, and he said: The black dog is a devil.

Chapter 31: COMMAND OF KILLING DOGS AND THEN ITS ABROGATION, AND PROHIBITION OF KEEPING THEM BUT FOR HUNTING AND PROTECTION OF LANDS OR CATTLE OR LIKE THAT

Abu Zubair heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) saying: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) ordered us to kill dogs, and we carried out this order so much so that we also kill the dog coming with a woman from the desert. Then Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) forbade their killing. He (the Holy Prophet further) said: It is your duty [to kill] the jet-black (dog) having two spots (on the eyes), for it is a devil.

I cannot believe that they don't know just how ridiculous this makes them look compared to the rational populace.

How many rabbis complained about "Miss Piggy"? Zero. Yet, I'm sure you can find at least dozen imams demanding the Henson Co. erase her blasphemous image from every video in their catalog.

Didn't they just have a problem with Piglet?

Funny how their "integration" into Western society always involves us changing our ways?

The answer is right in the story. If it offends you, don't display it. Simply write down the number on piece of old cardboard and place it in your window. Much better. It'll make you feel like you're in Gaza...

Then, let the rest of us have our puppies. They calm our nerves.

A postcard featuring a cute puppy sitting in a policeman’s hat advertising a Scottish police force’s new telephone number has sparked outrage from Muslims.

Is there any more perfect response to this "outrage" than a simple "f**k off"? I think the term was pretty much invented for situations like this.

That reminds me, I read an interesting article in a travel mag when I was in a waiting room a couple of weeks ago.

About a certain area of India.

Apparently the local Indian women go out in the first rains of the monsoon season.

And since Indian women tend to have rocking bods in those saris, Muslim boys are confined to their homes for a week.

It was reported merely as a quirky cultural observation that adds to the whole je ne sais quoi of the area.

Any rain forecast in Brooklyn this week?

Simple. Muslims don't have to call the police if they don't want to. Fine by me.

Oh, but that's the thing: the police have to suck up to the "Muslim community" or the "Muslim community" won't warn them prior to the next jihad attack. The police can't afford to "alienate" their loyal Muslim citizens and cause/force them to go all jihad on the general population.

IMHO well mannered black dogs are the civilized worlds best "Islamic terrorist detector". The more negatively a suspect reacts to the dog the higher the probability that he takes the life of mo seriously and hence he would be a more of a potential threat. A suspect who is OK with the dog, not so much. Not a definitive test by any means, but a useful tool for the toolbox nonetheless.

Jesus, is there anything that doesn't offend Muslims? Oh, right, dead Infidels. Silly me!

It's getting so bad over at the UK that you can't do anything that doesn't draw the ire of offended Muslims. And the now thoroughly dhimmified British will remove that cute puppy from the ad and another small step towards subjugation to Islam will have been taken. No more dogs allowed, joining the pigs that aren't allowed, is there are list of things that the British aren't allowed to do, say, show, etc. because it offends The Religion of Perpetual Outrage? They should print the list daily on the front page of newspapers so the good dhimmis don't inadvertently offend Muslims in any way shape or form. When is someone in the UK (besides Pat Condell, that is) gonna say enough is enough? Are there any testicles left there?

And rest assured if The Obamination wins in November, the fun will really begin here.

This is pure Islamo-bullshit.

Even the pedophile "prophet" himself, Mohammad the first (and worst), gave in to the demands of his pissed off followers not to kill all dogs, because then annoyed faithful explained to their idiot leader that some canines were needed for guarding their flocks and their homes.

Guard dogs and other working dogs are perfectly acceptible to Islam.

This is one more example of the stealth jihad used by the chuckling Fifth Column of Islam... to see how deeply the dhimmis will grovel if the Muslims yell "bigot!" at them loud enough.

But then, no one seems to know anything about Islam in Britain, or in the White House, or anywhere else in the West, so the infidel dogs reflexively bow to any b.s. that is flung at them by the mocking-as-they-colonize Ummah.

Tell the Mohammedans to return to dog-free Mecca if they can handle a picture of a puppy.

That isn't really a problem. They spend the same when they get back here as long as inflation is held in check.

Of course, if the Democrats keep allowing oil to spike by telling us that adding supply will do nothing and that oil and coal are making us sick, then inflation will become a structural, long term problem.

It is all coming down to the energy policy that congress has refused to deal with.

Not that I'm aware of.

Raising pigs is illegal in Israel, but it's now mainly symbolic.

There are kibbutzes that raise them for "scientific research" (like the Japanese and whales) and they get around the band by raising the pig pens (or whatever pigs are kept in) on wooden platforms.

The law states "on the Land of Israel" so those wiley Joos raised the pens because technically, there not on the land.

I think it is very important for the Reps to seize on this. It may be too late for this issue to save them in the 2008 election, but in the long run it could save the party.

One caveat on all this - the "strong dollar" proponents often have ulterior motives.

Our strong dollar policy after WWII was very much a subsidy to western europe. Their welfare states they built were a disadvantage but a strong dollar allowed for them to export products here.

One thing the strong dollar did was make Wall Street rich by getting every rich person on the planet to own some equities in the strong, solid US dollar.

After the cold war, we kept the strong dollar policy in place and then managed to export millions of jobs as globalization took hold. Again, a subsidy. But now we are at a point where we have almost lost our manufacturing sector to China who manipulates their currency to parity with ours.

If China were not manipulating, Chinese goods sent here would cost more and American goods sent there would cost less.

Wall Street wants the strong dollar back in order to sell US equities again and get the M&A bandwagon moving again.

If we want to wipe out our trade deficits and rebuild a diverse economy, we'd get comfortable with the dollar being "weak" while fixing our energy supply problem. Then we would get back to being an export powerhouse and the dollar would rise on its own, making your next European vacation affordable.

People who tie a "strong dollar" to a "strong America" ought to rethink the price of imports and exports. Europe would love nothing more than for the US to go back to a strong dollar so that they won't have to work hard to compete.

It's the whole, "preserving Israel's Jewish identity" thing, because there's only one Jewish state and only 14 million Jews worldwide.

If a Muslim comes to the west and assimilates, his culture will not be lost. THere are 1.5 BILLION Muslims.

If a Chinese, Hispanic or etc etc comes to America and assimilates, their culture will not be lost.

Jews don't have the numbers to replace the ones that lose their ID.

Pigs are raised in Israel- there is a dispensation for Arab Christians(I think) in the North- plus there is a renegade Jewish kibbutz that does it.

I have no problem whatsoever with Israel having a ban on pigs. This is done out of respect for their religious and cultural tradition and it doesn't seriously hurt anyone.

Respect is fine if it is voluntary. The problem with the ban is that it imposes religious beliefs on others. That is fascist.

As a practical matter, they are over there and run under the code name of "Zebras". Yes, you can get a swiss cheese and "zebra" sandwich in Israel. They make some rather silly moves to conform to the religious codes such as a "Shabbat clock" which turns on your TV on the Saturday so you will not miss your favorite show. And elevators that stop at every other floor automatically on Saturday. But with the odd exception they do not play whine all the time.

It does not impose beliefs. It proscribes behavior.
All law either imposes or proscribes behavior.
The Israelis evidently (and wisely IMO) do not enforce this stringently and allow many exceptions. If they find the law unduly burdensome or irrational, they will no doubt repeal it.

I've never understood Satanism. Theologically speaking, a Satanist implies that he believes that God is real & that Satan lost the war in Heaven, yet the Satanist wants to worship the loser in the great cosmic struggle? Secondly, if you want to be a Satanist so you can follow the Satanic Commandment: "Do What Thou Will," well why join a religion for that? Plenty of people do whatever the hell they want to without regard to others without bothering with the trappings of a religion.

Emily Nordling has never met a Muslim, at least not to her knowledge. But this spring, Ms. Nordling, a 19-year-old student from Fort Thomas, Ky., gave herself a new middle name on Facebook.com, mimicking her boyfriend and shocking her father.

“Emily Hussein Nordling,” her entry now reads.

With her decision, she joined a growing band of supporters of Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who are expressing solidarity with him by informally adopting his middle name.

May I remind you that the great originators of "fascism".....the Fascists, the National Socialists, the Marxists.....were adamantly secular? So the fact that there is a religious reason behind the law is irrelevant.
For sentimental reasons, the US has laws against selling dog meat.
That does not make the US fascist.

You are technicaly correct.
The anti-pork laws are theocratic.
The U.S. anti-dogmeat laws, if not religiously based, are....sentimentocratic?
But does this mean that Islamofascism is also a misnomer?

Not one to normally link to the Huffington Post, but I found this article to be very profound.

Whereas Europe and America have mobilized to condemn the violence in Darfur and recently the three American presidential candidates signed a joint statement condemning the genocide, repeated attempts at the UN to put a brake on the genocide in Darfur have always been thwarted by Arab opposition. By the same twenty two state Arab League block that stood by Khartoum as two million blacks in South Sudan were systematically murdered by the Arab North.

This has nothing to do with the dog and everything to do with trying to force the community to accept their dictates.

When my family moved to Saudi Arabia in the late '70s, we took our dog with us with the full permission of the KSA. Muslims generally don't keep dogs as pets but they do breed and use working dogs.

When Muslim activists try pulling shit like this, it needs to be firmly shoved right back in their face. There should be no special accommodations.

A great episode of The Twilight Zone had a old hunter (played by Buddy Ebsen) & his dog getting lost in the woods & come to realize that they've died. They walk through the woods until they come of a gate & the gatekeeper tells the old hunter that this is Heaven, come on in, but you have to leave the dog behind. The old hunter doesn't want to be anywhere, not even Heaven, without his best friend, so they keep on walking until they come across another man. Turns out he's an angel & the gatekeeper was the Devil trying one last trick to win the old hunter's soul. The reason that the Devil wouldn't let the dog in was because the Devil can fool a man, but he can't fool a dog.

If you ever go the James River region of VA, around Southampton and Surrey and Sussex Counties, there are plantation tours there you can take. Many are self guided and the honor system is used for donations. However, I distinctly remember one that my wife and I took around 2000, that there were Jack Russell and Shipperke (sp?) dogs, and they were the tour guides. They herded us from one attraction to the next. It was delightful.

Been trying to think why the ROPers hate dogs so much.
Seems to me that from the start, beginning with Mo himself, dogs have rejected them.

As any dog owner knows, dogs will love you unconditionally, and will do anything to please you. But - you cannot bullshit them: they know exactly who is a friend and who isn't, they know precisely who hides evil intent behind pretty words.

The dogs then must have known from the start that these were evil men, and have rejected them, never answering their advances.

If you're rejected - you start to hate the rejecter.

Thats what I think started it ...

Nice - have read a similar story, where the first gates were beautiful, golden and all - but the dog wasn't allowed in, not even to have a drink of water ... and the second was just a farm gate. Dog and man were allowed in, given a drink of water, and were told that the first gate was Hell.
Then, the man asked, weren't they upset about that other lot, and the farmer/angel said, no, they screen out for us all those who don't really care for their pets.

our civilization should not fail because they want to impose what they call religious beliefs on us. i call bull shit on them.
should we ban man's best friend who aids us in combatting terrorist bombers because moslems don't like dogs. fck them.
they will not stop pushing to destroy our way of life. we get rid of the dogs in law enforcement and the moslems will begin pushing to eliminate the police force entirely because 'infidel' cops offend their islamic right to commit terror. this is how they think. this is where they seek to go. total domination. they are not here to be equal.
it is beyond absurd that we even engage them in dialogue abt. this issue of dogs as pets or working animals as part of our lives for at least 10,000 yrs.
given the love and devotion from dogs and their courageous hearts, i choose canines.

If Israel wishes to remain a viable Jewish State, which I want as much as any observant Orthodox Jew, then why in God's name would they allow the minority Orthodox fringe parties to ram such counterproductive religious laws as this down the throats of the majority of Israeli Jews?
If the motive for the Pig Ban is to honour and preserve the Jewish cultural heritage, then I say the zealots should find a less theocratic and childish way to do so - hopefully one that does not alienate millions of less religious Israeli and Diaspora Jews and one that does not appear so theocratic.

G-D created dogs and pigs for a purpose, but that purpose is not to become kosher food.

If Israel wishes to remain a viable Jewish State, which I want as much as any observant Orthodox Jew, then why in God's name would they allow the minority Orthodox fringe parties to ram such counterproductive religious laws as this down the throats of the majority of Israeli Jews?

If the motive for the Pig Ban is to honour and preserve the Jewish cultural heritage, then I say the zealots should find a less theocratic and childish way to do so - hopefully one that does not alienate millions of less religious Israeli and Diaspora Jews and one that does not appear so theocratic.

re: #391 rawmuse

Britain has been the breeding place of some perfectly delightful dogs, such the Korgi, the Jack Russell, and others.

Hehehe....... You're right of course, but let me introduce you to some of our other beloved breeds. You could reliably put them into one of two main categories: Fashion accessories or Weaponry.

Your first little bunch of snipe-nosed cockapoos, are the Yorkies, the Shihtzus all those yippy little buggers that have been bred, generation after generation, for that one desirable characteristic that makes 'em so popular....... They have to be able to fit in a celebrities handbag. Not so much a dog any more, than something that pretty much resembles a rat on stilts.

The second category is bred along the same lines of thought, inasmuch as they've become accessories for a different kind of consumer: Let's call him 'The Hoodie'

The Hoodie's preferred beastie is not so delicate. This dog is the Pit Bull, the Mastiff, Rottweiller, Staffordshire Bull Terrier...... Fantastic breeds in their own right...... But relegated by their owners to that lowly state of being nothing more than a row of teeth and an arsehole, with a perpetually bad attitude holding the two together, willing to bite the crap out of whomsoever their morally retarded master requires.

It would be interesting to see if those morons North of the border will be quite so uppity to the hoodies who walk into their shops with said animals.

When I lived in Fremont, one section of the main park was nearly completely taken over by the blasted Canada Geese. One friend of mine had a dog who killed one. Some woman got very upset. A lot of other people were on the dog's side.

Due to my having herding dogs, a few years ago I was contacted by some park people to investigate the feasibility of discouraging Canada geese by hazing them with trained herding dogs, a method that has been adopted in a number of localities. We tried it out, it helped, but due to time constraints that I had, a friend took over the job and began a little business shooing geese off of public parks, school playgrounds, golf courses, and business parks. I would come and help occasionally. The dogs wore jackets to show they were “official,” and we were cognizant of the need to show to the general public that this method did not hurt the geese, just caused them to move elsewhere (and in some cases we would then get a job at the “elsewhere” too). In the interests of stressing that we weren’t being mean to the geese, the commands I used with one of my dogs were “where are your friends?” to alert her to look, and “go say hello” to launch. I would give her job description as “Branta Canadensis Migration Facilitation.” Much higher-tone than “goose harassing.”

re: #367 BeerDrinking_VictoryMonkey

I've never understood Satanism. Theologically speaking, a Satanist implies that he believes that God is real & that Satan lost the war in Heaven, yet the Satanist wants to worship the loser in the great cosmic struggle?

You're correct about one thing -- you don't understand Satanism! Specifically, the point you're missing is that "Satanism" is not a single, coherent religion with clearly-defined doctrines; it's a label that different people apply for different reasons, and therefore is close to meaningless. Kinda like manufacturers sticking little green-tree logos on everything from hemp-fiber shirts to sunglasses to antifreeze, creating the impression for consumers that the product is in some vague way "eco-friendly."

Anyway, this is not to say that individual "Satanists" do not have specific ideologies; only that their chosen label doesn't mean much in itself.

• Some "Satanists" -- a lot of them, I think -- turn out to be sullen teenagers who adopt the trappings of Satan worship mainly to annoy their Christian parents, and to épater le bourgeois in general.

• Other "Satanists" may get into devil imagery because they think it adds a little extra spice to their S&M sexual practices

• And then you've got the "official Satanists" exemplified by Anton LeVay and his Church of Satan -- but LeVay and those who identify with him have always been candid about the point that they are atheists / agnostics / secularists who do not believe in the literal existence of any supernatural beings, Satan and God included. And the Satan they pretend-worship is not the destructive, demonic embodiment of pure evil as described by Christianity, but the literary antihero of (for example) Bulgakov's Master and Margarita. At the same time, despite their pretensions to being voices of rationality, there is probably a large measure of "shock the normals" as an underlying motivation, and definitely a lot of look-at-me theatricality -- which I think is highly adolescent, but usually harmless.

• Finally, there may be genuine psychopathic killers who style themselves as "Satanic" because they believe themselves to be the literal anti-Christ, having been informed of this by the little voices coming from their breakfast cereal. But these people were crazy first, "Satanists" second.

In turn, I would respect them for that, as would, I expect, most reasonable people, who'd probably make an effort to accommodate their wants, where feasible. Nothing earns respect like respect, in my experience.

But they don't, or at least many of them don't; they loudly demand obeisance and unconditional accommodation without even the pretense of reciprocation, and I have no respect for those people; nor have I respect for those who would bend over and abandon their own values in the face of such arrogance and hubris.

Please carry on with your usually scheduled Islamophobia. Thank you.

For those of you not paying attention, "essentially fake" means "not fake".

Well, OK, perhaps I'm being harsh. I'm quite prepared to believe that some councillor was terrified at the thought of offended Muslims freaking out over a picture of a dog, and over-reacted.

Who would be surprised if they had reacted violently? Were you surprised, Irving, when 200 people died at the hands of offended Muslims when some silly reporter suggested that a beauty pageant contestant was beautiful enough for Mohammed?

Were you surprised when a teacher named a teddy bear Mohammed, and was hounded out of the country, lucky to escape jail time?

Were you surprised when tens of thousands of Muslims around the world burned, rioted, and killed when cartoons of Mohammed appeared in a Danish newspaper?

Were you surprised when Burger King and Nike (?), under threat of fatwa, had to revise their promotional material because of vague resemblances to the Arabic word for "Allah" in a swirl of ice cream and a shoe logo, respectively?

Were you surprised when Salman Rushdie was condemned to death for offending Muslims? Are you at all concerned that he'll have to spend the rest of his life under guard for it?

I wasn't surprised by any of those events, or the countless ones just like them, but then I'm an "islamophobe".

Yawn.

574 Irving  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 11:44:44am

I'm surprised that a bunch of people who claim that the MSM is a joke didn't pay enough attention to notice that exactly one Muslim was quoted in the original article - the city councilman.

Of course, the MSM also followed up on the news item and got to the truth. You all didn't bother, because it fit into your own definition of "truth".

575 Mambo Bananapatch  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 12:51:49pm

Irving's silly evasion could mean two things:

a) He isn't at all surprised by the events I listed, but can't admit it because then he'd be an "islamophobe";

b) He is completely surprised by the events I listed, but can't admit it because then he'd be acknowledging that he deliberately suppresses awareness of them, and then he'd be...well.

I am actually being mean to Irving here, and I shouldn't be. I apologize. He's quite right to note that not all Muslims wish to behead dogs and their kaffir owners, and that in situations like this there is often a rush to judgment. It is important to be aware of this.

Still, I would put to Irving that a large part of the reason for the rush to judgment, unfair as it may sometimes be, is the behaviour of those Muslims who quite openly declare their contempt for Western values and traditions, and who react badly, sometimes violently, when their own sensibilities are offended.

I'm not surprised by them at all. However, *none of them are evidence that British Muslims hate puppies.* That's the point that I'm trying to make here. Just because something sounds likely or plausible doesn't mean it's so. That's the difference between "truthiness" and truth. Judge news based on actual evidence, not on irrelevant data.

This is the mistake that led us to believe that Saddam had WMD. Did he used to have them? Yep. Was he an odious little canker of a man who would use them without hesitation? Yep. Are these two facts evidence that he had viable chemical weapons when we invaded? Well...

Now, these facts about Saddam certainly encouraged us to refuse to give Saddam the benefit of the doubt when he denied he had WMD. Likewise, it's easy to believe that Muslims hate puppies.

But if we rely on the the likely instead of the true... well, is it likely that Bush cheated on his military service? An awful lot of people thought it was likely...

You owe it to yourself to read *everything* in the news critically, not just the stories that you disagree with. Failure to do so makes you an easy mark for propaganda from either side of the political spectrum. (Don't think for a second that only the left lies.)

The kheffyeh's a symbol of Islamic supremacy? Really? Who said it? Do all Muslims believe it, or just one talking head? Can you give me more than one quote for that belief? Does Rachel Ray believe it? Does Rachel Ray even know that Muslims believe it?

I've got no idea. But did we even bother asking those questions? Or did we just find it "truthy?"

This is from a Fox news report, and I just wanted to point out a couple things....

I think my favorite thing in the world is an outraged muslim. I believe these are the most outraged people on earth. They are outraged about cartoons, dogs, women, Israel, the United States (aka the great satan) and pretty much about everything. I suggest instead of saying outraged muslim, we add a new word to the lexicon. "moutraged-noun or verb-one that is outraged at stupid things"

I don't know if I have ever truly been outraged, I have been pissed, aggravated, ticked, mad, and annoyed, but outrage hasn't been one of the myriad of feelings. In fact outrage isn't one of the choices for myspace mood meter. (Need to change that?) For our muslim readers, you might want to check with Tom about that. I know that is your favorite thing....outrage!

Now the political statement. If we vote in Osama Hussain Barack, we will need to learn to be outraged. It will keep us entertained when we lose the country.

As to dogs being unclean, have you ever seen the nastiness that is the Middle East? My dogs are pretty clean, probably get more baths than the average middle east arab, so get over it. For a culture that has more rules about wiping your own ass, they sure don't get it.

Hmm....I guess I am.....wait for it.......Outraged!

Irving, you are quite correct. Good post.

I would say only that the word "islamophobia" is tossed about fairly casually.

Given that Islam, as I understand it, quite explicitly declares dogs to be "unclean", and given that as recently as last year, Muslim cab drivers in Minneapolis (and, I believe, Vancouver) were refusing to collect blind passengers with guide dogs, I don't think it's necessarily "islamophobic" to fail to be surprised at the allegations made in Charles' post. This is not to suggest that one should not explore these things more carefully.

Yeah, that was over the top. I apologize. I stopped agreeing with Charles's political view right around the time time the mortgage crisis - the tomato/salmonella crisis, oddly enough, is what pushed me over the top into an Obama voter this time around (I voted for Bush the last two times.)

But I'm trying not to be a useful critic and not a troll. Feel free to call foul on me.

Hey Irving,

You made good points, that's not being a troll. Besides, I was the one being snarky. Call it even.

I was politically apathetic until I met my Korean wife about 10 years ago. She comes from an extremely conservative society, and I started reading right-wing blogs, to the exclusion of pretty much all else. I don't regret it, but I have become somewhat reflexive in my thinking. So I'm making an effort to be more un-partisan, and I guess part of that is to investigate things a bit more closely from different angles, as you suggested.

Cheers,
MB

It is official--the sun has indeed set on the British empire.

Any culture that dislikes dogs is a culture not worth knowing.
