Talking to my friend today who owns a micro brewery. He says things are getting dodgy, commodities prices are moving so high so fast, but he can't raise prices to compensate. The business model is unraveling.

12 6pat6  Tue, Jul 1, 2008 9:11:11pm

And since this thread pretty much matches how my day has gone, I'm outta here.

I'm basically a free marketeer but when it comes to a commodity that is critical to the economic base of our country I believe that the government needs to step in and regulate the speculation in oil.

Thanks for this thread Charles; the last thread was, IMHO degenerating at an accelerating pace (surprise, surprise) not so much over Evolution or Creationism being taught in the Public Schools - which was, iirc, YOU'RE central point - but into the subject of Science generally and folks were getting so scattered in their thinking and their arguments that an truly open thread is like an open window - a breath of fresh air!

16 BlueCanuck  Tue, Jul 1, 2008 9:14:18pm

Thank god, a sane and quiet thread. Well quiet from all the arguments and stuff.

I agree however the current price of oil is out of sync with the actual supply because of speculators essentially betting that the price will go higher and making money when the panic they've instigated actually does drive the price higher. I also believe that foreign and domestic enemies of the USA are purposely doing this to harm this country.

A woman walks into a veterinarian's waiting room dragging a wet rabbit on a leash. The rabbit obviously does not want to be there.

"Sit, Fluffy!" she says. Fluffy glares at her, and sopping wet, jumps up on another customer's lap, getting water all over him.

"I said sit, now there's a good Fluffy," says the woman, slightly embarrassed.

Fluffy, wet already, squats in the middle of the room and urinates. The woman, mortally embarrassed, shouts, - "Darn it, Fluffy, will you be good?!"

Fluffy then starts a fight with a Doberman and pursues it out of the office. As the woman leaves to go after it, she turns to the rest of the flabbergasted customers and says:

"Please pardon me... I just washed my hare, and can't do a damn thing with it!"

If you know any Obamatons who insist that Wesley Clark made a valid point on McCain, ask them to read this account from the very "progressive" magazine The Nation.

Wes Clark had three different subordinate commands refuse his orders in Kosovo in order to "prevent World War 3".

Excerpt.

On June 12, 1999, in the immediate aftermath of NATO's air war against Yugoslavia, a small contingent of Russian troops dashed to occupy the Pristina airfield in Kosovo. Clark was so anxious to stop the Russians that he ordered an airborne assault to confront these units--an order which could have unleashed the most frightening showdown with Moscow since the end of the Cold War. Hyperbole? You can decide. But British General Michael Jackson, the three-star general and commander of K-FOR, the international force organized and commanded by NATO to enforce an agreement in Kosovo, told Clark: "Sir, I'm not starting world war three for you," when refusing to accept his order to prevent Russian forces from taking over the airport. (Jackson was rightly worried that any precipitous NATO action could risk a confrontation with a nuclear- armed Russia and upset the NATO-led peacekeeping plan just getting underway with the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo.)

After being rebuffed by Jackson, Clark, according to various media reports at the time, then ordered Admiral James Ellis, the American in charge of NATO's southern command, to use Apache helicopters to occupy the airfield. Ellis didn't comply--replying that British General Jackson would oppose such a move. Had Clark's orders been followed, the subsequent NATO- negotiated compromise with the Russians--a positive element in the roller- coaster relationship between Moscow and Washington, which eventually incorporated Russian troops into peacekeeping operations--might well have been undermined.

In the end, Russian reinforcements were stopped when Washington persuaded Hungary, a new NATO member, to refuse to allow Russian aircraft to fly over its territory. Meanwhile, Jackson was appealing to senior British authorities, who persuaded Clinton Administration officials--some of whom had previously favored occupying the airport--to drop support for Clark's hotheaded plan. As a result, when Clark appealed to Washington, he was rebuffed at the highest levels. His virtually unprecedented showdown with a subordinate subsequently prompted hearings by the Armed Forces Services Committee, which raised sharp questions about NATO's chain of command.

Who is Wesley Clark to tell us what constitutes sound decision making in a crisis? Clark maintains that his rank and experience allows people like him to make wartime decisions, whereas McCain might as well be a civilian.

"Hello?"
"Hi honey
This is Daddy
Is Mommy near the phone?"

"No, Daddy,
She's upstairs in the bedroom with Uncle Paul."

After a brief pause, Daddy says
"But honey, you haven't got an Uncle Paul."

"Oh yes I do, and he's upstairs in the room with Mommy Right now."

---A brief pause....

"Uh, okay then, this is what I want you to do.
Put the phone down on the table, run upstairs
And knock on the bedroom door and shout to Mommy that Daddy's car just pulled into the driveway."

"Okay, Daddy, Just a minute."

A few minutes later
The little girl comes back to the phone.
"I did it, Daddy."

"And what happened, honey?'

"Well, Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on and ran around screaming. Then she tripped over the rug, hit her head on the dresser And now she isn't moving at all!"

"Oh my God! What about your Uncle Paul?"

"He jumped out of the bed with no clothes on, too.
He was all scared and he jumped out of the back window and into the swimming pool. But I guess he didn't know that you took out the water last week to clean it.

He hit the bottom of the pool and I think he's dead."

*****Long Pause*****
*****Longer Pause*****
*****Even Longer Pause*****
**Then Daddy says,**

"'Swimming pool? ..?"
Is this 486-5731?"

"No, I think you have the wrong number...!"

Barack Obama, the lead Presidential Democratic Party candidate, is for banning all guns in America. He is considered by those who have dealt with him as a bit more than just a little self-righteous.

At a recent rural elementary school assembly in East Texas, he asked the audience for total quiet. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands once every few seconds, holding the audience in total silence.

Then he said into the microphone, "Children, every time I clap my hands together, a child in America dies from gun violence."

Then, little Richard Earl, with a proud East Texas drawl, pierced the quiet and said: "'Well, dumb-ass, stop clapping!"

A woman decides to have a facelift for her 50th birthday.
She spends $15,000 and feels pretty good about the results.

On her way home, she stops at a news stand to buy a newspaper.
Before leaving, she says to the man behind the counter , 'I hope you don't mind my asking, but how old do you think I am?'

'About 32,' is the reply.

'Nope! I'm exactly 50,' the woman says happily.

A little while later she goes into McDonald's and asks the counter girl the very same question.
The girl replies, 'I'd guess about 29.'

The woman replies with a big smile, 'Nope, I'm 50.
Now she's feeling really good about herself. She stops in a shop on her way down the street. She goes up to the counter to get some mints and asks the shop girl this burning question.

The girl responds, 'Oh, I'd say 30.'

Again she proudly responds, 'I'm 50, but thank you!'
While waiting for the bus to go home, she asks an old man waiting next to her the same question.
He replies,'I'm 78 and my eyesight is going. Although, when I was young, there was a sure-fire way to tell how old a woman was. It sounds very forward, but it requires you to let me put my hands under your bra. Then, and only then can I tell you EXACTLY how old you are.'
They wait in silence on the empty street until her curiosity gets the best of her. She finally blurts out, 'What the hell, go ahead.'
He slips both of his hands under her blouse and begins to feel around very slowly and carefully. He bounces and weighs each breast and he gently pinches each nipple. He pushes her breasts together and rubs them against each other.
After a couple of minutes of this, she says, 'Okay, okay...How old am I?'
He completes one last squeeze of her breasts, removes his hands, and says, 'Madam, you are 50.'

Stunned and amazed, the woman says, 'That was incredible, how could you tell?'
The old man says, 'Promise you won't get mad?'
'I promise I won't,' she says.

'I was behind you in McDonald's.'

Two robins were sitting in a tree. "I'm really hungry", said the first one.

"Me, too" said the second. "Let's fly down and find some lunch."

They flew to the ground and found a nice plot of plowed ground full of worms. They ate and ate and ate and ate until they could eat no more.

"I'm so full I don't think I can fly back up to the tree", said the first one.

"Me either. Let's just lay here and bask in the warm sun", said the second.

"OK." said the first.

They plopped down, basking in the sun.

No sooner than they had fallen asleep, a big fat tom cat snuck up and gobbled them up. As he sat washing his face after his meal, he thought,

"I love baskin' robins."

I posted this last night re Clark, k_i-

Shelton created a minor controversy for 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark, a subordinate to Shelton during the 1999 Kosovo military actions, when he stated: "I will tell you the reason [Clark] came out of Europe early had to do with integrity and character issues, things that are very near and dear to my heart. […] I'll just say Wes won't get my vote," casting doubt upon the presidential contender's legitimacy.

And I must say I find it extraordinarily amusing that the Clark "worked for" so to speak, Bill Clinton, draft dodger extraordinarre and is pimping for Obama who also has no military experience at all.
Clark is nothing more than a political prostitute, selling what is worth nothing to anyone foolish enough to buy.

Ah the joys of e-mail jokes. :)

A young Canadian soldier was attending some college courses between assignments.
He had also completed missions in Afghanistan .

One of the courses had a professor who was a vowed atheist. One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He Looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes."

The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the young soldier got out of his Chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The young man went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence.

The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the soldier and asked, "What the hell is the matter with! you? Why did you do that?"

Came the reply,
"God was too busy today protecting our soldiers who are protecting your right to talk stupid and act like an asshole. So, He sent me"

Here's another (repost of my own from this morning's DT):
It's the dead of winter, freezing cold outside, snow all over and a poor hungry and frozen sparrow is sitting alone on a telephone line.
Fella goes by in a horse and sleigh and the horse leaves some "droppings" behind.
Sparrow flies down, finds some kernals of food in the horse manure, which is also fairly warm, eats his fill, flies back up to the telephone line and starts singing loudly cause he's now warm, full and happy!
A hawk flying overhead hears and then see's the sparrow and, well,.......the hawk isn't quite so hungry anymore!
The moral to the story is: when you're full of shit, keep your mouth shut!

Alas, I fear it will be too late. Look at the totally reactionary manner in which the auto makers (and others) are proceeding! In virtually the short span of roughly two years, everything is being scraped and retooled in response to the rise in energy costs. I don't think there's any turning back, even if the "crisis" is resolved one way or the other in the not-so-distant future. And I'm hedging my bets it will be. Then, everyone will be scratching their heads and wondering how and why lifestyles and customs were literally turned on their heads overnight. Interesting times to come, indeed.

An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow."

The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked what happened and the man explained, "Well, doc, it's like this. First I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing.

"Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezing it between her knees, but still nothing."

The doctor was shocked. "You asked your neighbor?!"

The old man replied, "Yep, none of us could get the jar open."

hmmm, I should go through my e-mails more often.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
We had to have the garage door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a "large" enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, "Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower." I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4. He said, "NO, it's not." Four is larger than two.."

We haven't used Sears repair since.

IDIOT SIGHTING
My daughter and I went through the McDonald's take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5 bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter. She said, "you gave me too much money." I said, "Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar bill back." She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed me back the quarter, and said "We're sorry but they could not do that kind of thing." The clerk then proceeded to give me back$1 and 75 cents in change.

Do not confuse the clerks at McD's.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
I live in a semi rural area. We recently had a new neighbor call the local township administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: "Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore."

>From Kingman , KS

IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD SERVICE:
My daughter went to a local Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the
counter for "minimal lettuce." He said he was sorry, but they only had iceburg lettuce.
From Kansas City

IDIOT SIGHTING:
I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, "Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?" To which I replied, "If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?" He smiled knowingly and nodded,
"That's why we ask."

Happened in Birmingham , Ala.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
The stoplight on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine. She asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, "What on earth are blind people doing driving?!"

She was a probation officer in Wichita , KS

IDIOT SIGHTING:
At a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker. She was leaving the company due to "downsizing." Our manager commented cheerfully, "This is fun. We should do this more often." Not another word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that deer-in-the-headlights stare.

This was a lunch at Texas Instruments.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
I work with an individual who plugged her power strip back into itself and for the sake of her life, couldn't understand why her system would not turn on.

A deputy with the Dallas County Sheriffs office, no less.

IDIOT SIGHTING:
When my husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, w e were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the drivers side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. "Hey," I announced to the technician, "its open!" His reply, "I know. I already got that side."

This was at the Ford dealership in Canton , Mississippi

I grew up in Phoenix, went to Moon Valley High School. We used to go tubing down the Verde river. God, I loved that and miss it. We have our reunion coming up in a couple of years. I'm hoping to put together a tubing trip like the olden days- Tie all the tubes together, with the cooler containing all the beer, etc. in a tube in the middle.

Too funny, we switched! I grew up in Aurora, CO.....moved here after college........I am taking my nephews (from Colorado) and my older sons down the Salt, Thursday on the tubes.....

Be honest now, do you miss this heat? I've been here since 1986 and I am still not used to it.....

Wolfie, I really lost belief in the Catholic Church here, when the Priest at my sons Catholic High School laid into George W. Bush during the 2000 election during an assembly as being the worst candidate and backing Al Gore. That was it for me.Granted, he was later removed to another Diocese, but I couldn't help but feel the Catholic Church had lost it's bearings.

Oh, I don't blame you. I'd be out the door, too.
Most priests I've run into are very against that kind of politicizing, though.
I hope you wrote or called to complain. We Catholics aren't very good about doing that, are we? But we should......for something like that.

Agreed. Other translations may be better for study, but the KJV or the old Catholic Douai (16th century) version are much better for services or getting the "feel" of things.

I actually felt a little embarrassed the other day.

I bought the Douay-Rheims version of the Bible for my Amazon Kindle. Not sure why I felt embarrassed. Perhaps those durned "Secular Progressives" who determine coolness got it into my head only Jesus Freaks and such would carry around the Holy Bible.

So just to spite them, I'm carrying around my Little Flower rosary too.

Well the oil supply is limited however don't get too worried. The same thing happened in the 70's when the first gas crisis hit. Builders came out with a bunch of compacts and subcompacts. (mostly crap! {think Vega, Pinto, etc.}) Then when they fell apart or were total scrap after what should have been a mild fender-bender, people started buying the bigger cars and trucks and thus the SUV and mini-van craze was born.

Big = safer (more metal to protect you).
Big = more room for your stuff/kids/you.
Big = status. (would James bond look cool in a prius? I think not.)

hmmm, I should go through my e-mails more often.

Yes, as I mentioned above in #126 I think our "oil crisis" will resolve itself in the not too distant future, if the politicians in fact do the right things to START to make the US energy independent; then the OPEC countries will do what they should have done by now and drop the price of oil like a stone!
However, I have little faith in politicians and feel that the oil shake out and drop in prices is more likely to come about when our allies (loosely applied here to include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Arab Emirates, as well as GB, France, Japan, and our more "traditional" allies) realize that the weak dollar and the weakening US economy means bad things for us and MUCH WORSE things for them. The other member nations of NATO would actually have to spend a LOT of their GNP on their own defense and the ME states mentioned above realize that the US could not or would not step in should Iran get Frisky the way Hussein did with Kuwait preceding Desert I.
To paraphrase Reggie Jackson on joining the NY Yankees "The American Economy is what stirs the drink of the World's economies."

I guess I have a different opinion. I think parishioners get more more information that they can use to improve their lives and become better people by hearing the mass in a language they understand.

That said, I worked in France and Germany for a while and heard mass in those languages. I enjoyed it from the standpoint of seeing the same ritual but in a different language (and it helped me pick up some of the language). Even went to Easter mass in Korea once.

As an aside, I think that the politicization of the Hispanic immigration within the Church here in Southern California has gotten way out of hand. This is not a human rights issue that the Church needs to inject itself into. It is an age old economic issue - people have always migrated for work (I have). Migrant workers will always feel a bit out of place in a foreign land and it is not the responsibility of that foreign land to restructure itself to resemble the land that some migrants came from.

I agree we should go after every teaspoonful we can pump out of the ground and that would last awhile but I was commenting on the fact that the price has to go up as there is only so much here on Earth.

BTW. Why don't we hear about how if we invested in space, we could mine the other planets for petroleum or hydrocarbons? Jupiter and Saturn are mostly giant balls of methane and free hydrogen. Yes it would take a while to get there but we have to start now before we run out of our own supply to get there.

There is no petroleum any where else in our solar system. It takes vast amounts of plant life to create petroleum. Jupiter and Saturn contain only trace amounts of hydrocarbons. Sorry, I'd love to mine the hell out of space but there's not much out there to mine.

Huh? Y'all sure you have the right link there?

Oops! There you go. re: #208 stevieray

Not everyone liked it. Here's one guy's opinion.

I totally agree with that opinion. As I was watching it, I thought there were Fascist elements which some had previously attributed to, for example, "300" -- a film I adored.

But whereas 300 was genuinely, even deliciously right-wing (in the take-no-prisoners sense), Wanted's characters live in the moment, without consequence to what their "greater plan" might entail. Its mission gives meaning to the dull life lead by the petit bourgeois, by empowering them through violence and disregard for humanity at large, because they are not privy to this plan or methodology.

It's a fun film, and there is such a thing as overthinking things.

But sometimes one should anyway.

@Cartman: Cool! I don't feel so geeky now. ;)

Universal I suppose, if you know Latin. The Latin Mass was why all the old Cathedrals had so many statues and icons and paintings. Gave the common folk something to look at while the Priest was talking the foreign language they didn't understand.

You might say it was universally incomprehensible, but it was universal nonetheless.

In any case, in the last few centuries missals with translations have been readily available and cheap. Catechism class went through the Mass. The liturgy is repeated week after week and thus can be comprehended by anyone who bothers.

Here is an excellent article on why Oil prices move the way that they do.

Read it.

It demonstrates clearly why an announced long term increase in supply (like allowing more drilling in the US) will likely produce an immediate lowering of Oil prices AND an expansion of supply.

Raising interest rate in the US, ironically, may help too.

Forward it to anyone buying the Pelosi "it won't work for 5 years" crap.

My biggest problem with the modern Mass is the choir/band that seems to be performing for the congregation instead of leading the congregation in song. Sometimes they seem to not even want anyone to sing, just sit there and listen. I like the old traditional songs that everyone knows by heart, but so many of the choirs these days shun the old classics.

And gawsh I can not stand the guitar mass with the idjit playing the out of tune guitar. It is like nails on chalkboard to me. Yikes. Why won't they invest $20 and get an electric tuner. I think to state flatly "no petroleum any where else in our solar system" is perhaps premature due to the lack of exploration of said solar system. I did mention methane and IIRC under gravity and pressure I believe other chemical reactions could produce long chain molecules composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.

Taking your question seriously; burning hydrocarbons in the atmosphere chemically breaks the bonds holding the atoms together so that they reform into other compounds or elements. I think I see your point that yes we wouldn't want to bring the hydrocarbons back to Earth to further pollute but that wouldn't be necessary. Factories could be built on-site to make whatever products are needed. Power stations could be built in orbit that would beam power to locations on the planet for local use. With enormous amounts of raw materials even large inefficiencies could be tolerated. I'm no physicist or chemist or engineer but I can see the possibilities.

Around here at the local market, the checkers just take short change out of their pocket, or a secret place. No comment, nothing but a smile, and thank you. Filipinos. My wife, when she was drinking years ago(before marriage), tried to buy a bottle of wine and was like serious short. Like $9. The manager came out and asked what the problem was. The checker explained, the manager who did not know my wife from Adam pulled out the money from her purse and made up the difference. Said she had days like that and made sure she had a driver. Needless to say, my wife never forgot.

I usually aim for 2 AM, but rarely make it. And my poor husband would stay up with me, as he was worried. Now? He also has Type 2, which I diagnosed...long story. Thank G-d he is not on any meds, but I will be on insulin the rest of my life, as my pancreas went on strike, and puts out a tiny bit of insulin.

we are finding oil in places that it supposedly was depleted from. One theory is that it migrated into the void from elsewhere, the other is that it was formed after previous pumping.

Just looked it up and yes I had heard of it (very sketchy mention by some author I was reading). It has always struck me that there's either too much or too little oil to fit the most popular theory. (i.e. plants, dinosaurs etc. turning into goo over the millenia)

Also, it used to be thought that there was limit to where you could find oil. (which fit the theory) Now however with greater skill at finding oil, ta da! we're finding more oil!

Sorta OT;
Research needs to be done concerning geothermal deep drilling.
Using geothermal power stations would; free up oil to be used for making other neat materials, remove the strangle hold of OPEC, limit the pollution of the planet and put our economy back on a surplus basis with the rest of the world.

There's numerous ways to make energy. The whole geothermal thing is a great idea as well. It works best near fault lines or volcanic active zones where the heat from the earth is close. Otherwise to get some geothermal heat from a volcanically dead area, the cost could be prohibitive. Now for heating homes, there is something called ground source water heating. doesn't require fuel oil to burn to create heat, and it can be reversed in the hot months to create AC. So many solutions to our problems it's not funny. What we need to do is get off our duffs and start looking at some of the kookier ideas and see if there isn't something behind it after all.

Interesting. The AC-130s are due for retirement in 5 years. The USAF wants to use the C-27 Spartan as the replacement. Sans the 105mm. The Spartan is much smaller - making it harder to hit from the ground and better able to use shorter, rough air strips. The twin 30mm Bushmasters are perfect for the airframe. As are the Hellfires (hopefully Mavericks as well).

Good point. There's a lot out there that we don't know. I still think that we should be spending more effort to get the human race out there to live and explore in person. And damned with the human cost. We tend to forget how many lives were lost just exploring or sailing the seas of our world in the past. Now a days we lose just one astronaut and everyone over reacts. Not to disparage the lose of life but we keep trying to make it over protective.

I got into a very bad habit, seriously, about 12 or 13 years ago, when I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic, and put on insulin...2 kinds. I was afraid that I would become hypoglycemic during the night, and not wake up! I know better, as a retired RN, but still that nagging fear was there.

My goal is, by December, to actually be in bed at 1 AM.

We sure know how to party! ;)

Careful, or I will sing a lullaby...I am a monotone!

I've always been a night owl. Daughter has same genes. When she was about 2 or 3, you could hear her in her crib singing, ♫ ♪ "waindwops ah fawwin' on my head..." ♪ ♫
No crying/screaming, just singing. Eventually she'd fall asleep.

Now... about this goal of yours... 1 AM your time is 12 AM my time. Result: I'll never see you again!

no wait... I get here sooner... get to see Nana AND get to party longer!

XCOR isn't in the running for the X Prize, but company executive Aleta Jackson says she has even higher hopes. "We want you to own your own space-plane, and that's not an impossible goal - it can be done with current technology. Making that technology accessible to everyone is why our company exists. We believe that what we're doing will pay off for us and our investors because space tourism is going to be a big business very soon. We have a contract with a company called Space Adventures. They've been encouraging companies to build a vehicle, but they've had a problem. Nobody has built a vehicle because nobody's taking rides yet, and nobody's taking rides because there is no vehicle. We just got our launch license from the FAA, the second one ever granted for a reusable vehicle, and we want to be first to break that cycle. Space Adventures has a contract with us for 600 rides, which they're selling at $98,000 each."

That's part of the problem; economies of scale.

I laugh at steve jobs and apple. Yeah they're getting big NOW but if it weren't for the pc there wouldn't be 100 million plus computers able to interconnect to form the web/internet for the iPod to be usable.
Even with a better platform and operating system apple has what.. less than 10% of the market?
Reason why? Apple was too greedy. They kept the price too high and they wouldn't license or publish the specs so that 3rd parties could manufacture peripherals. They even had a meeting on the subject and still didn't have the vision.

My point being that if the manufacturers of tech for space wanted to then we all could be in space for a reasonable price within 5 years. They'd get their money back then.

I'm getting (more) loopy - I'm going to take a break. Thanks all for an amusing thread.

358 slokat  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 12:42:12am

If people want to give Charles feedback on topics posted, it appears Charles welcomes it -- otherwise, why have topic ratings at all? As for comments, I ding up now and then as a way of sparing the thread empty "lol"s and a means of patting backs. Happened on 6/19 in New york. They are discussing it now.

That was covered a few days ago on Hot Air. Very upsetting. I couldn't watch the video.

This is being joined with several other events where people "on the street" are watching events unfold before them but do not take part in any way to prevent one party from getting hurt: a parent beating a child, a rape, etc. People seem to have a TV mentality about these things; they don't seem to realize that they are really happening and that they could--or even should--get involved. Scary.

Good morning, Lizards.

Morning, dear--and to Typicalwhitey. I have no desire to be up, but slept horribly last night. New cat in house.

"All"? What do you mean by that? You do know that "all" is a universalizing, totalizing, oppressive gesture designed to create false consciousness and further reinforce the hegemony of late market capitalism?

Typical.

Wow, a "TV mentality" about watching reality itself. That is a potent way of putting it, vx, and I think you're right. Frighteningly right.

Any capable thoughts I may possibly have at this hour of the morning can, unfortunately, only be attributed to the lack of sleep.

But this attitude I'm hearing about really frightens me. People won't be able to help anyone else anymore if it keeps up.

That was covered a few days ago on Hot Air. Very upsetting. I couldn't watch the video.

It boggles the mind that not only did hospital pesonel not assist, but that people just sat in the waiting room, with the woman just layiing on the floor & ignored her.

For everyone who just woke up, there was a terrorist attack in Jerusalem today.

It is scary. The idea of watching out for a complete stranger not to avoid being injured yourself but to help someone else--it seems to have died in some people.

VX, I once had a kitten. I bought it for someone, thinking I'd deliver it at the end of that week to my friend as a gift. The first night, it was so loud, so distracting (playing with my feet under the covers), and so incontinent, that in the middle of the night, I thrust it into a box, loaded up my car, and drove nine hours straight to my friend's house to deliver it. It was a complete success: the next night, I slept perfectly.

GOTC! How's the summertime prep going?

Pretty well! I'm treating myself to reading Anthony Trollope, an author whom I've overlooked. The parallels between the 1850s and now in terms of politics, religion, and the press are fascinating.

Ah, Trollope, one of my favorites. Are you reading the Barsetshires, or the Pallisers? I've read both (a while ago) and remember preferring the latter.

re: #428 goddessoftheclassroom

Yes, the tensions and conflicts of those Victorian years are pretty relevant, aren't they? Evolution, place of religion in public life, "the Eastern Question," problems in Central Asia, vast disparities in income, huge service economy, etc. It's all there.

I was just watching FoxNews and they interrupted a repeat of O'Reilly to report on the terrorist attack. It's unbelievable - I never would have thought that they would use a bulldozer. Remember that terrorist that killed 8 high school students a couple of months ago also in Jerusalem? He was a former driver for the school. And now this terrorist was a construction worker. Israel gives them jobs and what do they get in return - this? Makes me sick.

I am so sorry. My heart aches for Israel.

The one good thing I can think of about giving the Palestinians a state is that then Israel could declare war on it without their being "refugees." I'm so tired of the bullies calling the shots.

I think a lot of sockpuppets are in use. A lot of posters on the I.D. threads recently only started posting at the start of them going back at least two weeks.

Barchester, and I'm LOVING IT. Since you prefer Pallisers, I realy have something to look forward to!

I'm am bit of an "expert" on Victorian life, so it's easier for me to follow. I'm getting a good review of mythology and Latin allusions, too!

re: #434 goddessoftheclassroom

Thanks. Unfortunately, these ones (today's terrorist and March's yeshiva terrorist) were inside Israel, having the status of permanent resident because they live in East Jerusalem. Giving them a state won't fix anything because 1) a third of the problem won't be living in the new Phakestine, but rather, right here in
