An Alternate National Anthem in Denver

Wed, Jul 2, 2008 at 8:45:43 am PDT

Wow. A little taste of what we can expect at the Democratic Convention: ‘Black national anthem’ causes stir at Hick speech.

As Denver dignitaries gathered Tuesday for Mayor John Hickenlooper’s State of the City address, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.

But that’s not what she did.

Instead, Marie performed the song “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” which also is known as the “black national anthem.”

When she finished, the proceedings moved forward, and the “Star-Spangled Banner” was never performed.

Star Spangled Banner -- keep your hand over your heart

Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing-- keep your hand over your wallet

I remember learning this frigging song in the first grade from a racist teacher. I love the fact that "every" isn't even spelled right.

It's a new world for the democrats. Next up: the gay national anthem? [but don't call them unpatriotic]

6 rawmuse  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 8:48:31am

The Star Spangled Banner is held widely in contempt by the Left. Has been for 100 years.

7 LeonidasOfSparta  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 8:48:31am

yep. One of my coworkers was there and was "raving" about how great it was that this woman was so public with her "message." And on a slightly unrelated topic, BO is in Colo Springs meeting with Peace Corps/Americorps volunteers trying to rally the "service" community.

At some point (the TIPPING POINT) Americans will stop humoring the dems and their attempts to turn America left. It's just more of these kinds of things that can (and will) turn the tide.

At one time in the 2004 elections I was convinced that Kerry was going to win. All the media believed it, all the pollsters, etc. Bush was doomed. I almost didn't vote.

40 Ringo the Gringo  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 8:56:59am

Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on 'til victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

She explained that she decided months ago to switch the lyrics because she will no longer sing the national anthem... she realized that as an African-American she at times feels like a foreigner in her home country.

But then after her performance:

She explained her song was an artistic expression of her love for her country. She said she meant no disrespect of any kind and that her song was in no way intended to be a political statement.

I believe that may actually be the biggest load of bullsh*t ever dumped.

Now, I know this is stating the obvious, and shared sentiment 'round these parts, but, OHMAGOD! Does no one else see the correlation between the separation, and really somewhat of an insubordination, from this community or group of like minded thinkers and what is fanning the flames of racism in this country? The left are the new oppresors of this country, and by encouraging this kind of behavior they force us to, and going beyond never forgetting the heinous acts commited by slave owners, accept THEIR unacceptance of the socially progressive society that we are becoming. By insisting that we must cling to America's rough, shall we say adolescence, is ironic even, as it stalls their ability to achieve this utopian society that they relentlessly drag on about - oh and one that yes, we must get with the program and accept, of course ::rolls eyes::

In all fairness (or as much as I can muster), this doesn't really have anything to do with the Democratic Convention, other than that it happened in Denver.

re: #44 Tilly

What they said and I would like to add that I have never heard of this song.

The song is more than 100 years old. It's been around a long time and has a fairly interesting history.

The spelling of "ev'ry" is a a poetic elision. It's not unusual, at least in the past, for poets to drop syllables to force a line into a particular rhythm. Other examples are ne'er (for never), o'er (for over). I'm sure there are others.

Seems like the choice of this song was made by the singer w/o any discussion w/ anyone in authority. Am not sure this one singer's choice has much to do with the Democratic Convention.

Sorry to go OT y'all but this is just too precious to pass up:

GOP senator: McCain roughed up Nicaraguan
"WASHINGTON - One of John McCain's Republican colleagues says he saw the presumed GOP presidential nominee roughly grab an associate of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and lift him out of his chair during a diplomatic mission to the Central American nation in 1987.

Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., said he saw McCain, who has a reputation for being hot tempered, rough up an Ortega associate during a trip to Nicaragua led by former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan.

"McCain was down at the end of the table and we were talking to the head of the guerrilla group here at this end of the table and I don't know what attracted my attention," Cochran said in an interview with the Sun Herald in Biloxi, Miss. "But I saw some kind of quick movement at the bottom of the table and I looked down there and John had reached over and grabbed this guy by the shirt collar and had snatched him up like he was throwing him up out of the chair to tell him what he thought about him or whatever ...

"I don't know what he was telling him but I thought, 'Good grief, everybody around here has got guns and we were there on a diplomatic mission.' I don't know what had happened to provoke John, but he obviously got mad at the guy ... and he just reached over there and snatched ... him."

Cochran, who has complained about McCain's temper before, said only a handful of senators took part in the trip, including former Sen. Steve Symms of Idaho. He said he didn't know who the man McCain grabbed was except that he was an associate of Ortega.

The American National Anthem brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. It makes me want to stand up and put my hand on my heart and I'm Canadian.

I disagree so strongly with what Rene Marie did that, for the first time, I wanted to ding down the article: not because I disagreed with Charles for posting it, but because I couldn't ding the Denver Post article!

I'm imagining myself at that convention, pointing an unplugged computer mouse (with dangling cord) at the singer and clicking madly while saying, "I'm dinging you down! I'm dinging you down!" (Like the Kids in the Hall character who squished heads.)

Virtual boos for Rene Marie and her exclusion of non-black people from her replacement anthem.

Obama has made his campaign all about race. He thinks white people are too stupid to understand what he's done but people know when they're being alienated.

re: #40 Ringo the Gringo

Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
'Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on 'til victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
'Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

You know, there's nothing really wrong with the song per se.

There's nothing racist about it, just some references to the "dark past", and the "blood of the slaughtered". I don't find that offensive at all.

But putting it IN PLACE OF the national anthem is just wrong.

re: #139 realwest

Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation;
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause. it is just,

You know, there's nothing really wrong with the song per se.

There's nothing racist about it, just some references to the "dark past", and the "blood of the slaughtered". I don't find that offensive at all.

But putting it IN PLACE OF the national anthem is just wrong.

No...there is a problem with it. She was to sing the National Anthem. There is only one nation here....and only one anthem. I am amazed that no one stepped forward and sang the actual anthem. I know I would have and not let them move forward till I was finished. I don't believe in useless confrontation. But I do think it is time to draw the line. And this was a slap in the face of every American...black and white...because there is only ONE ANTHEM...despite what those with an agenda believe.

And if she is not proud of America, maybe she should be there with Mugabe as he takes office again and sing another anthem other then the authorized version....do you think she would be returning to the US and breathing at the same time?

Enough is enough.

Vote Giuliani the second time around and was gifted by him with a safer and cleaner city.

Wow! I hadn't thought of that Korean grocer in years. I pierced the picket line in support of the grocer - Bought a big bottle of baby formula and found a neighborhood mommy to give it to.
IIRC the Korean grocer was simply protecting his store from shoplifters and it got all out of hand. The blacks at the time hated the outsiders coming-in, stealing business, the money, and leaving. Never mind the fact that without them there'd have been nobody providing product to the community. It was major-major dangerous to just walk those streets back then. Nobody but the Koreans would consider risking their lives day and night as they did/do.

However, it's clear from Zimbabwe's example, it's better to address society's problems directly--be they hunger or rampant crime, like Rudy Giuliani did--by attacking the problem, not putting on different makeup.

I remember learning this frigging song in the first grade from a racist teacher. I love the fact that "every" isn't even spelled right.

It's not a spelling error, it's a contraction meant to force a three syllable word into two syllables to better fit the music. It's an extremely common songwriting trick, and deserves no scorn. Actually, the lyrics are rather beautiful and spiritual. Not surprising since it was written in 1899, before the civil rights movement was completely co-opted by the revenge seeking angry blacks. Despite that, there is nothing really American or Patriotic about it. As a national anthem, it fails miserably.

Well, that's an obnoxious thing to do. Making it worse was the fact she wasn't called on it.

As I listened to her sing, I assumed she would eventually move into the traditional Star Spangled Banner. I called her personally this (Tuesday) afternoon to understand what happened. She explained her song was an artistic expression of her love for her country. She said she meant no disrespect of any kind and that her song was in no way intended to be a political statement. She apologized for any problems she may have created."

Well, there's nothing much that could have been done at the time, I suppose. But there should be a loud denunciation from the council and she should not be paid.
If they paid her in advance and they can reasonably prove she was hired to sing the SSBanner, can they take her to petty claims court?
Can a govt agency do that? Don't they have recourse of some kind?

The fact that she sang this without letting anyone know in advance is somehow indicative of what is planned for the Democratic Convention? How exactly was that reached?

Yesterday this older black gentleman was in my local gun shop. He's a semi-regular, and has always seemed like a straight-up guy. We were all drinking coffee and the discussion (as it usually does) was on the skyrocketing price of ammo. That, of course, led to complaints by most everyone regarding the soaring costs related to just about everything. I'm not sure what this guy was thinking, but he sort of launched into a mini-dissertation on what he felt was wrong with the state of affairs in this country, and it inevitably led to a healthy dose of BDS. "I'm tellin' ya, its Bush! He's the whole problem!". The guy went on to sing the praises of Obama, and how he was going to "fix" things. Well, the poor guy sort of picked the wrong place of business to go there. He was met by a virtual wall of silence. Finally, the owner very calmly spoke up and declared "Well, ____ (insert first name here), my business is pretty much gonna depend on that guy NOT getting elected and trying to "fix" everything!". I sort of felt sorry for the guy, as he had managed to alienate himself amongst a group of mutual friends with a mutual interest, But it just goes to illustrate just how potent that Obamassiah Kool-Aid really is. Folks who traditionally vote Democrat really do believe that this guy is going to "fix" everything they perceive is wrong with America, even if his agenda directly conflicts with their private interests. In this case it was the gentleman's passion for the shooting sports. So many are so blind to what BO really represents, in terms of personal freedoms. It's a sad state of affairs.

So much jingoistic, unapologetic, in-your-face patriotism that day, from everyone in attendance, regardless of race, color, or creed. Representatives of the armed forces were wildly cheered. A WWI veteran was introduced and the crowd gave him a standing ovation that lasted five minutes. There was no song-switching whatsoever, and I guarantee you a stunt like that would have been soundly booed and hooted until the culprit fled the stage in tears.

When the note count of a lyric exceeds the amount of syllables, that is called a melisma. These days, it is over used. Just tune in to American Idol. Most singers try to out do each other, for instance, singing the word "Love" in about 36 notes, which would be written with a long line emanating from the first note of the lyric and extending through the last one.

I thought that would have made her dance a booty jig or something, followed by a fist bump with Barack.

Just tune in to American Idol. Most singers try to out do each other, for instance, singing the word "Love" in about 36 notes,

Which is one of the many reasons I don't watch "American Idol". Really not interested in the latest Mariah Carey sound-alike.

Just a thought - courtesy of my grandfather:

If you look at the last line of the first verse of the Star Spangled Banner you see that it is a question:

"O say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave?"

That question has endured over time, but the sense has been reversed. When Francis Scott Key wrote those words he knew that the United States would remain the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave"- he just didn't know if the flag would still be flying over fort McHenry after the British bombardment.

Today the same question applies, but unlike Mr. Key we all know today that the flag will still be flying- what we do not know is whether or not the country that flag flies over will still be the "Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave".

It's always fun to listen to singers and wonder if they'll get that high note on "o'er the land of the freeeeeee...". The range of that song (an octave and a fifth) is pretty difficult for most people unless they have some talent and experience.

I don't see anything objectionable in the song itself (actually, in the poem written by James Weldon Johnson, who was a great writer). I think it would be entirely appropriate if it had been sung alongside the Star-Spangled Banner. It's the singer's intentions, and the deceitful way she did it, that make it inappropriate.

because she said earlier in another interview that she felt like a foreigner in her own country at times, so she questions her own patriotism, if she ever had any. Therefore, her choice of song, the Black National anthem, in light of the aforementioned was not an accident and was deliberate in it's intent. You can't see something that transparent?

“Surely these cannot be the same Muslim-owned shops which have dog food cans and packets on the shelves and bacon and pork sausages in the chill cabinet with the pictures of happy pups and contented porkers beaming from the packaging?”

A resident from Wolseley Street, Dundee, said, “I have always endeavoured to be considerate to others regardless of race, colour, creed, etc.

427 jcm  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 10:32:35am

On the afternoon of July 2nd, 1863.

Oates' 15th Alabama Infantry was locked into a contest with Vincent's left regiment, the 20th Maine Infantry commanded by Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain. Repeated southern charges made no headway against the stubborn soldiers from Maine who loosed volley after volley into the swarm of Confederates. "My men obeyed and advanced about half way to the enemy's position," Colonel Oates reported, "but the fire was so destructive that my line wavered like a man trying to walk against a strong wind, and then, slowly, doggedly, (bend) back a little. To stand there and die was sheer folly; either to retreat or advance became a necessity. My Lt. Col. I. B. Feagin, lost his leg; the heroic Capt. Ellison had fallen, while Capt. Brainard, one of the bravest and best officers in the regiment, fell exclaiming: 'Oh God! That I could see my mother', and instantly expired. Lieut. John A. Oates, my beloved brother, was pierced through with eight bullets and fell mortally wounded."

Great gaps also appeared in the ranks of the 20th Maine. Chamberlain's men were holding their own, though the position was becoming more precarious as the frightful minutes dragged by. Then an officer spied Confederates moving toward the regiment's left flank. "I immediately stretched my regiment to the left by taking intervals," Chamberlain wrote. "My officers and men understood my wishes so well that this movement was executed under fire, the right wing keeping up the fire, without giving the enemy any occasion to seize or even suspect their advantage. They renewed the assault on our whole front and for an hour the fighting was severe. Squads of the enemy broke through our line and the fight was literally hand to hand. The edge of the fight rolled backward and forward like a wave." Shouts for ammunition filled the air as cartridge boxes emptied. Some men had a few cartridges left while others had none, even after rifling the boxes of the dead and wounded. Knowing that the next charge would break his thin line, Chamberlain decided to take the initiative away from the 15th Alabama: "At that crisis I ordered the bayonet. The word was enough. It ran like fire along the line, from man to man and rose to a shout, with which they sprang forward upon the enemy, now not 30 yards away."

The hillside echoed with the distinctive metallic click of hundreds of bayonets on rifle barrels. With a cheer, the 20th Maine rushed down the body-strewn slope. The exhausted Alabamians were caught off guard by this audacious move and scattered. Those who ran eastward were caught in a hail of bullets from the 20th's detached Company B, lying behind a stone wall 100 yards away. Confusion reigned as the 15th Alabama melted into the trees. "We ran like a herd of wild cattle," Oates lamented. "On the top of the mountain I made an attempt to halt and reform the regiment, but the men were helping the wounded and disabled comrades and scattered in the woods among the rocks. The dead literally covered the ground, blood stood in puddles on the rocks. The ground was soaked with the blood of as brave men as ever fell on the red field of battle." Assisted by soldiers from the adjacent 83rd Pennsylvania, Chamberlain's men rounded up 400 prisoners from the 15th and 47th Alabama regiments, including a number of officers.

The Union line that day was saved at the Battle of Little Round top.

It is "her" national anthem, similar to Dems saying that Bush isn't "their" president. They live in apart, of their own choosing.

They are ashamed of the history of the US, our culture, our practices, our society, and when the world says we are the biggest evil, they agree. Yet they claim to love America.

When they say they love this country, they only mean they love the ground between our borders and think would be a great location to build their socialist utopia. They may even keep the name, since it is already sewn onto the towels.

Three options:

1) He is a typically clueless LLL, ever galaxtically wrong, and means the US effort in Iraq.
2) He wanted the US to lose, supported the terrorists, and means the war by the 'insurgents.'
3) He wanted the US to lose because it would mean a GOP loss, and he means the Dem lost the political war.

The sad part is, none of the three are impossible.

Serious question: Are extremist black Americans living in an alternate America?

Because their America, the one where your pastor rails against your country and swears from the pulpit, the one where you sing alternate national anthems (some in Spanish), the one where America, the largest charitable benefactor in the history of the world is "mean spirited", is not my America.

re: #434 paradox42

This should brighten your day:
Written by U. S. Army Reserve Chaplain Jim Higgins (May, 2007)
LSA Anaconda is at the Ballad Airport in Iraq, north of Baghdad:

"I recently attended a showing of 'Superman 3,' here at LSA Anaconda. We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through The National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place.

Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter, as everyone finally sat down and expected the movie to start.

But here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to stand at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice , then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where the recording left off:' And the rockets red glare, The bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free, And the home of the brave.'

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq.

I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight for you!
Pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for all our soldiers serving us here at home and abroad. For many have already paid the ultimate price."

re: #131 ploome hineni

Having read it a couple of times I can only describe it as a disjointed crib on Gnostic Christianity and Old Testament Judaism written by a petty warlord with temporal lobe epilepsy. Incoherent, not placed in a time line so that you can easily pretend things that were said earlier were the belief system even though they were abrogated by later teachings and arbitrarily stitched together by Umar sometime after Mo's death. If somebody submitted it to me as an essay in the 6th grade I would give it an F. Al Bakari's Hadith is more coherent but he had to weed down 35,000 traditions to 5,000 ones that had something of a reasonable isnad. Not that the New Testament or the Old Testament are without fault. Mark was written 30 years after Jesus died, and John was written roughly 70 years later. Not to mention all the New Testament Apocrypha that was deemed non-canonical. The letters of Paul are probably only 50% his and the letter by James was written by a guy named James but probably not the James we think about in the context of being a contemporary of Jesus.

Black national anthem? Does that make the Francis Scott Key anthem I learned into the White national anthem? Doesn't the act of performing a "Black" national anthem become a racist act by separating blacks folk from the rest of the folks of the country? I for one am fed up with this type of racist behavior. Much like the double standard I see on my block when my neighbors call each other n*****, but take great offense if a non-black were to use the term. I tell my neighbors that this is racist and they disagree that I will not allow them to use the word 'n*****' nor will I allow non-black folk to use the term either. That they discriminate against non-blacks on a daily basis is something the black community is going to have to come to terms with.

"Felt in the days when hope unborn had died"

I can't see how the Dems can stand that line in their alternative anthem. See, "hope unborn" isn't really alive, and is merely a fetus or something like that, so it couldn't have "died."

Unless hope, being inanimate, is somehow more animate than babies. But what do I know, I just bitterly cling to my religion.

Oh, and the "True to our native land" had better be a reference to the US, or I would then REALLY have to question their patriotism (to our country, at least).

500 joan  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 6:22:56pm

Well, for what it's worth, here is what I've personally observed:
1) Diversity "community" heaps scorn on one person in the group who stupidly suggested opening the big-deal multicultural fest with the Star Spangled Banner. Because we are just all about celebrating the great strength that diversity leftists bring to America. The National Anthem is less welcome to them than a huge juicy fart.
2) Young professional woman, African-American, in a work setting tore a colleague to shreds, verbally, for suggesting that the company 4th of July picnic had flag bunting for the VIP stage. "I don't owe this country sh*t and my ancestors didn't ask to be Americans, so this patriotic bullsh*t is just glorifying greed, genocide, bullying and conquest."
3) Middle aged African-American professional, very successful and respected, volunteered in casual conversation that "I do not and never will stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. My allegiance is to my people and to the struggle for justice, which does not exist for anyone but the wealthy in this country. You don't understand? Well, you did not grow up Black in America."

Rev. Wright spoke for many many people of color and African Americans when he thrice-damned America. The revolution will not be televised.

501 joan  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 6:28:01pm

499 Americano: "True to our native land" had better be a reference to the US, or I would then REALLY have to question their patriotism (to our country, at least)." Um, no, okay? No, it refers to Mother Africa. Oh, and I forgot the statement by one other native-born American of South Asian heritage: "I do not identify with my country of birth, but am loyal to my mother country of India."

Oh, but yeah, the Left is flowing with patriotic feeling, just not for America.

re: #455 Cathy in Northern Virginia

The wife and kids of the terrorist bulldozer driver may or may not have had anything to do with what the terrorist did. Since it is possible his family had nothing to do with his act, I don't think their home should be destroyed or their citizenship revoked.

Please read the excerpt again. The family's citizenship cannot be revoked. The terrorist's citizenship would be revoked. In this case it would not matter, since he's dead, but it might in other cases.

Keep in mind that only a small number of terrorists actually hold Israeli citizenship: most Palestinians in the territories do not. Most Arab Israelis are law-abiding. But if they are convicted of terrorism against the state, it seems to be that loss of citizenship is a completely valid punishment option. Especially since Israel does not have capital punishment for terrorism.

Destroying the house of the terrorist has been debated within Israel (including within the judicial system). The fact is, that destruction of the home is a powerful deterrant to further terrorism. It may be ugly, but it works. The home where the terrorist lived and presumably planned or prepared the crime is considered a valid target. (The destruction of a family home where he did not spend time would be illegal.)

504 uptight  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 6:49:04am

Surely, it would more in line with current Democratic Party ideology for them to sing The Internationale.

It seems to be available on YouTube in most languages. I'd suggest Farsi, with improvised extra verses about Kwanzaa sang in Swahili.

Here it is in English:

Arise! ye starvelings, from your slumbers;
Arise! ye prisoners of want.
For reason in revolt now thunders
And ends at last the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses, arise! arise!
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

Chorus
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale
Unites the human race.

etc. etc. etc.

That or the Horst Wessel song (they represent about the same thing these days)

Awesome.

Also, Beyonce sings the anthem (youtube) Awesome.

By the way, I am reminded from browsing numerous tributes and anthem clips: most of us, we the people of all races, do love this country. Among the most courageous, talented and patriotic Americans are countless African Americans. Every time I feel bitterness and anger over the moronic antics of people like "Reverend" Wright or this opportunist jazz singer, I remember that our revolutionary totalitarian enemies want us at each other's throats. They want us to forget our common loves and dissolve into a Balkan nightmare of endless civil war, the hellish chaos from which to swallow up hope and consolidate their own power.
America, God shed His grace on thee and crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.
