FARC has been getting hammered for the past year, and it looks like it's another military operation that resulted in their release. That's speculation on my part, but it's informed by the fact that FARC terrorists have been turning themselves in to Colombian officials in droves, and the military has been operating deep inside former FARC safe havens with regularity.

Their names are Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes, and Keith Stansell. They were kidnapped when they made an emergency landing due to a mechanical failure while conducting a Joint US-Columbian aerial counternarcotics recon on Feb. 13th, 2003. Thomas Jannis, the American pilot, and Luis Cruz, a Colombian Army sergeant, were murdered by the FARC terrorists.

re: #65 seekeroftruth

pimf - they have been rescued.

68 lawhawk  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 12:44:38pm

Reuters is calling it a rescue.

French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt and three Americans were rescued from leftist guerrillas by Colombian troops, Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said on Wednesday.

Santos said all of the former hostages were in reasonably good health after being held for years in secret jungle camps.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC, has been holding about 40 high-profile hostages it has sought to exchange for jailed rebels.

Betancourt, a former presidential candidate with dual nationality, was kidnapped by the FARC in 2002. She was last seen in a rebel video at the end of last year looking gaunt and despondent.

The Americans, three Defense Department contract workers, were captured in 2003 after their light aircraft crashed in the jungles while on a counternarcotics operation.

Yes, capturing that laptop and key intel certainly appears to be the turning point. Things have a tendency to develop faster than the terrorists can adjust because the Colombians got inside their decision making process.

From a purely economic standpoint, it benefits Colombia much more than the US, but because Uribe's government have really stuck their necks out in the fight against FARC and illegal drug trafficking, I think they deserve preferential treatment. More than does Mexico, to be honest.

This is great news. I pray they can recover from what must be a horrific experience.

Ya know, we might be sitting too close to the TV to see what's going on...the Soviet Union is gone, Berlin Wall--gone...there will be a Disneyland in Cuba and China before long...Saddam is gone...Khadfly plays well with others...a case can even be made that the ROP is getting their a$$es handed to them at just about every turn. Gangster punk outfits like FARC are taking a beating.

I wonder if in a hundred years whether history will say we were living in the days when freedom really was on the march?

A few more pushes in the right places...and how different the world will look than it did from 1979 and you-know-who. That's only 30 years, and look at what has happened.

Still lots to do, but the point is--we got 'em all on the run and don't need to apologize or ask for the UN's approval.

Wes Clark in '04: Kerry's Courage Is What We Need in a Commander in Chief

Via Powerline, Wesley Clark was busted in a CNN interview yesterday afternoon:

ROBERTS: But when it comes to that same type of qualification, you were very robustly behind John Kerry's military experience...

CLARK: Absolutely.

ROBERTS: ... in your speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, where you talked about his experience of being there under mortar fire.

CLARK: Right.

ROBERTS: And let's listen to the way that you summed that up.

CLARK: Right.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CLARK: John Kerry's combination of physical courage and moral values is my definition of what we need as Americans in our commander in chief.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ROBERTS: So, you said it's what we need in a commander in chief. And I'm wondering how different was John McCain's experience from John Kerry's?

CLARK: Well, a lot, because John McCain basically served honorably and well in uniform. He did everything the country could have asked.

What John Kerry did is John Kerry got out of the uniform. He took a judgment, a judgment I didn't agree with at the time, but he had the moral courage to stand up for himself and oppose the conflict in Vietnam.

ROBERTS: But where was the executive experience that you talked about?

CLARK: The executive experience wasn't the issue there, because John Kerry wasn't claiming that he had some special executive experience on national security against George Bush.

John Hinderaker writes: "So Kerry's military experience was better than McCain's because after serving for four months in Vietnam, he returned to the U.S. and falsely accused his fellow servicemen of being war criminals."

Clark's reference to Kerry's "physical courage" clearly shows that Clark was arguing that Kerry's service in Vietnam counted as a qualification to be president.

Watch it here (about 4 minutes in):

Obama Campaign Rethinks Iran Again

Some very disturbing plans:

In an interview with the Financial Times, Anthony Lake, a former US national security adviser who has worked with Mr Obama since the start of his campaign, also urged the US to learn lessons from its traumatic withdrawal from Vietnam regarding pulling out of Iraq. “The most dangerous crisis we are going to face potentially in the next three to 10 years is if the Iranians get on the edge of developing a nuclear weapon,” he said. “If I were the Europeans I would much rather put on the table more sanctions, together with bigger carrots, and have that negotiation than I would face that crisis down the road.”

Mr Obama and his advisers stress the Democratic candidate’s readiness to sit down with Iranian leaders without conditions. “Unless you assume that [Iranian negotiators] have IQs less than those of eggplants, they are not likely to make major concessions for the privilege of speaking with us. So the question is: what is your strategy for the talks?” Mr Lake said. “Do you believe that simply sanctioning them can drive them into concessions before you talk, or do you believe that you need to have the sanctions there as a stick at the heart of negotiations?”

So we learn Obama is once again in favor of meeting with Iran without preconditions and that one of his top advisers doesn't think Iran is on the verge of obtaining nuclear weapons. We also learn that Lake doesn't seem to know that diplomats have been promising Iran more and more carrots over the last five years just to negotiate. There has only been one precondition: Iran had to suspend its uranium enrichment for the duration of talks. Can the Obama campaign cite some critical carrot, unknown to the world, that would persuade Iran to negotiate? Can it explain what effect sanctions could possibly have at this point given how little time they have to work?

The main problem is that you can't negotiate with the likes of Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, or any Islamist terrorist organization. These people know what they want, and have an agenda that they will do anything to achieve. They will not compromise or ever waiver from their goal. They're commited fundamentalists who truly believe in their way. The only things up for negotiating through the use of taqiyah are the infidels' terms of surrender, or otherwise temporary hudnas.

The people of Colombia are very gracious and good people, the FARC is a Marxist revolutuionary product of Russian KBG and and later the GRU. The KGB later pushed FARC into being deeply involved in promoting the Drug trade as one of it's pillar efforts at destabilizing and corrupting the USA. As of late also getting assistance from China via proxies such as Chavez and North Korea.

The current government of Colombia are very popular and supported by the majority of the Population. They are also very eager to be partners with the USA in legitimate and legal trade. The Colombian people are well tired of the FARC and want to become a flourishing member of Democratic Capitalist nations. They are energetic, patriotic, and creative people and would do well. Our Marxist dominated Democratic Party keeps blocking all attempts of Colombia from being a trading partner. In my opinion, Colombia is more deserving than Mexico.

It's getting interesting over there. Another troofer has posted about the recent success the Columbians have been having in dealing with FARC and ends with this little jewel.

Separately, the assassination of FARC leaders shows that the US/Colombia have been intercepting the FARC communication network for at least a year. It is either an incredibly odd coincidence that they just get actionable intelligence at the moment McCain flies down there, or the Colombian government and US intelligence services are conspiring to manipulate the US elections.

Let them keep questioning the timing - the Colombians did what they had to do to free those hostages. And there's plenty more hostages too - several hundred in fact. It's curiously looking back at the March cross border raid and the opining of pundits that it put the lives of those hostages in jeopardy. It now looks like the raid helped gather intel to crush the terror group and rescue hostages.

NEW YORK - A federal appeals court has upheld the convictions of two New York mosque leaders who were convicted on money laundering charges in a sting involving a fake missile plot.

The Manhattan appeals court says Yassin Aref, the imam at an Albany mosque, and Mohammed Hossain, a pizzeria owner who attended the mosque, received fair trials. The ruling was Wednesday.

Their defense lawyers had argued to the appeals court that the government unfairly entrapped their clients.

266 Diamond Bullet  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 2:08:22pm

If these haven't been posted already, the Post has some names:

BOGOTA, Colombia -- Colombia freed Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. military contractors from leftist guerrillas on Wednesday after military spies tricked rebels into giving them up without a single injury, the defense minister said. In all, the operation freed 15 hostages including Colombian soldiers and police, Juan Manuel Santos said.

The rescue is the most serious blow ever dealt to the 44-year-old Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, who considered Betancourt and the three Americans their most valuable bargaining chips.

In Paris, the French-Colombian politician's son Lorenzo Delloye-Betancourt called her release after six years of captivity, "if true, the most beautiful news of my life." There was no answer at the homes of American families of the three U.S. hostages: Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell.

McCain is in Colombia. Now he is going to speak with the press about the rescue. He knew about it. GEE! He is great at combating terror. What a bunch of bunk. What an opportunist. Why is he connected to this. I am starting to think that his whole trip was part of this strategy. Obama and the Democrats better wake up or they will be left sucking their thumbs while McCain waltzes into the White House.

and concurring with it.

Yeah, I know that, but they will eventually die. I mentioned that Karl Marx is waiting for that eventuality because FARC itself says their inspiration was Karl Marx - and Simón Bolívar, who dreamed of a democracy like that of the USA but didn't quite get there (and I'm pretty sure would not approve of fricking FARC).

Some background info on the hostages and Betancourt from an occasional author at my site who is allegedly in Air Force intelligence is here, though it reveals nothing especially new insofar as I can tell.

Great, great news this.

It proves again you can never leave the military option (even if there were no shots fired..) off the table. It's thanks to the brilliant military men and women and Colombian and US intelligence that these people are home again, not thanks to more talking, appeasement and negotiations.

That makes the final score Uribe/McCain 1 - Obama/Chavez 0

328 DockScience  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 4:29:07pm

Still lots to do, but the point is--we got 'em all on the run and don't need to apologize or ask for the UN's approval.

re: #247 CyanSnowHawk

Just received the company wide email announcing the rescue of Keith Stansell, Marc Gonsalves and Thomas Howes.

Sounds like I picked a bad day to go home early!

We've had the "minute of silence" every year for way too long now, and big posters with these guys pictures on it all over the building. And I don't even think we're in the same sector. (I'm in the Electronics Sector, myself, CyanSnowHawk). Gee, if this had come out a few hours earlier they would have had more to talk about at our "America Day" doings, at lunchtime.

I felt a little guilty the other day when I threw out my "You are Remembered" pen, the other day. I wasn't making any kind of "statement", other than to say, "this is a cheapo pen that doesn't write worth a ****!". :) Anyway, we'll have to do a little celebrating tomorrow.

It's great to see gratitude directed appropriately here - towards the rescuing organization, BTW. That had to be a really gutsy move on their part - the sort of thing my fellow employees were probably familiar with.

No, she is not. She is just being her caring, Catholic self, hoping for those terrorists to have a fair trial under the laws of Colombia. She is too happy to be finally free after more than six years of captivity under the harshest conditions in the Colombian jungle. She yearns for peace in Colombia after many decades of domestic wars and does not mean ill to anyone, including those thugs.

I personally pray that peace finally takes hold in that wonderful, noble country.
