I question the flag in the same picture as this man.
He's disassociated (cut out, if you will) himself from it.
The World is more important to him than America. In his view, the flag is just a "divisive" display of Americana that makes the world hate us.
Salute it or Refute it, and he's already picked sides IMO.

I'll have to find that picture or video of him clasping his hands in front of himself while everyone around him (I think one of them is Bill R) has their hand over their heart during the Nat'l Anthem.

Obama and his story just begs for this:

What the moral? Who rides may read.
When the night is thick and the tracks are blind
A friend at a pinch is a friend, indeed,
But a fool to wait for the laggard behind.
Down to Gehenna or up to the Throne,
He travels the fastest who travels alone.

White hands cling to the tightened rein,
Slipping the spur from the booted heel,
Tenderest voices cry " Turn again!"
Red lips tarnish the scabbarded steel,
High hopes faint on a warm hearth-stone--
He travels the fastest who travels alone.

One may fall but he falls by himself--
Falls by himself with himself to blame.
One may attain and to him is pelf--
Loot of the city in Gold or Fame.
Plunder of earth shall be all his own
Who travels the fastest and travels alone.

Wherefore the more ye be helpen-.en and stayed,
Stayed by a friend in the hour of toil,
Sing the heretical song I have made--
His be the labour and yours be the spoil.
Win by his aid and the aid disown--
He travels the fastest who travels alone!

Rudyard Kipling

God willing, Obama will end up entirely alone when this is over.

Hannity & Colmes was talking about some breaking news about today's hostage rescue down in Colombia. Apparently a bunch of Colombian troops dressed up in Che T-shirts and pretended to be NGO workers. They walked into the FARC camp and rescued the hostages. Wouldn't this mean that a NGO group(s) was deliberately working with a known terrorist group that has been black-listed practically world-wide?

More liberal newspapers are going broke. It couldn't happen sooner! I feel for these newspaper reporters who have to look for jobs when theirs has been eliminated, but their consistent left-wing bias has contributed (not caused) their demise. In other words, they're dinosaurs in a contemporary, Internet-driven world. Journalism is HERE, on LGF, and on other such blogs.

A partial recap follows.

CALIFORNIA: LA Times laying off 250 people, including 150 in newsroom. Owned by Tribune, it has been rumored that the LA Times would be severely cut because it is the lowest producer with the highest overhead in the Tribune's stable of papers.

Also Berkeley area papers cutting including Oakland Trib, Contra Costa Times and Fremon Argus.

San Jose Mercyry loses 17 jobs.

MISSOURI: Less Enterprises will be forcing the St Louis Post Dispatch to cut, big.

NY: Scripps stock down 18 cents ... look for cuts in the near future.

CT: Hartford Courant getting rid of 25% of newsroom. I believe it is owned by the Tribune, too.

Utan -- Deseret News cutting 35 jobs.

FL -- Palm Beach Post cutting 300, not all newsroom.

Also Daytona Beach Journal cuts 99 jobs.

MD -- Baltimore Sun loses 300

We in southeastern NC are the beta site for the national switchover to digital. This has been going on for a while. A few months ago, my computer started screwing up -- turns out it was the hardware (when they replaced my motherboard and CPU, it worked fine).

When they changed the menu system, I needed a new box (no real problem there, but it took them a while to fix it).

Now, all of a sudden, my 2 and a half year old HD TV won't play HD anymore on the normal connection, nor will it on the alternate input for the same cable. It will play on the crappy "red, white, yellow" cables... Is it possible they fucked up my TV?

OK, another trick is to slightly tilt your head aside, maybe 10-20 degrees.
When outdoors, face the sun. Smile, or not.
No smoking materials, unless indoors, with a pipe, in a library, only if you are a man wanting to look scholarly.
Check the zipper and the coat buttons and the tie.
Suck in the gut (that is no more a problem with me, thankfully).
No outdoor pics in the wind. Breeze is OK, but no hard winds.
Black and white pics almost always come out more flattering than color.

Doubt they mucked up the TV. More like they did something to the cable modem. Call 'em back.

What's the question?

In a nutshell -- we in southeastern NC are the beta site for the national conversion of TV from analog to digital...

A few months ago -- my motherboard on my computer, which has internet access from my cable providor, started screwing up and had to be replaced.

A week or so ago, my HD TV (about two and a half years old) won't play HD on the same cable inputs from the box to the TV -- have to use lower quality (red, white, yellow) connection now, and it sucks.

Am I paranoid? Or is it possible that their testing fucked up both my computer and my TV?

Elaborating on jcm's reply, your cable modem will act as a buffer between the outside world (the network) and the TV itself. They probably couldn't do anything to the modem which would ALSO damage your TV.

It's possible they while working on the cable stuff put a surge on the data lines. Just enough to cause erratic behavior but not enough to kill. But to test that, they have to bring new boxes out replace the ones you have and see if the laptop and TV are still wonky.

That's what I'm saying -- my computer's motherboard screwed up and my TV's HD capabilitity fried, within a few months. Both on the same system, which just happens to be on the analog-to-digital cable TV beta test site. I think that's a bit too coincidental, given that they'd both worked fine for a couple of years with no problem.

Moreover, when the cable company changed their menu recently (about three months ago), I had to have a technician come to the house to make my HD work properly.

The techie who was here Monday said the problem was at the junction on the street (i.e., neither in my house, nor where it connects to my house). He said the signal was too "high" and would have to be fixed there.

When he said "too high," did he perhaps mean too strong? As in, fuck up people's equipment?

Check the cable ground. If you live in dry or Salty area, you might need to add your own. Make sure the ground is continuous, and that if it's to a water pipe that the pipe's ground isn't interupted by PVC somewhere in its path to ground.

re: #171 christheprofessor

Well, in general, it's possible to overload a receiver (your TV's tuner, or cable input) by feeding "too high" an input into it. It might not permanently damage the input. It might simply cause distortion. What's "too high", in your situation? I don't know.

Here's another test you might make. Do you have a friend or neighbor who's NOT on the same cable network? Lug (yeah, I know) your TV over and hook it up to his system. See if it works okay there.

Before you single out the cable co. the most common problem with electronics is not over-voltage but under voltage. Low voltage makes chips overheat, killing them. Don't cross your electric co. off the suspect list.

Before you single out the cable co. the most common problem with electronics is not over-voltage but under voltage. Low voltage makes chips overheat, killing them. Don't cross your electric co. off the suspect list.

Hasta el cambio. Baby.

This picture needs to continue to be updated throughout this election. And might I further suggest that we do the same with McCain, simply for the purpose of illustration? Rush made a very good point that it is getting to be absurd, the number of people who have been "disassociated" from on both sides during this election season. He was making a general statement, and I agree with it wholeheartedly. But, if you make a list of the people that Obama has had to disassociate himself from compared to those McCain has disassociated himself from, well, Obama wins that race by a landslide.

I think that having running, regularly updated pictures such as this one for both candidates would have the dual benefit of showing just how radical and reprehensible BHO's associations are, while illustrating the ridiculosity [

Fair enough, but my house is full of electronics -- the only problems I've had are with the two pieces of equipment on the receiving end of the cable company's equipment. While they are beta testing us for the national analog-to-digital conversion.

Good thought, but the cable guy checked all that and found no problem. I think it was a bit suspicious that the first thing the guy did Monday was walk in, disconnect my cable from the wall outlet, and replace the outlet. Then he replaced the cable between my outlet on my TV. Never looked at the box or the TV.

For TV, we swear by DirecTV satellite. Have to bonk snow/ice off the roof receiver during the winter at times, but otherwise it's been fabulous. Excellent customer service too.

For internet, we have cable.

Obama is just distancing himself temporarily from his mentors, friends, allies and Chicagoland business associates until he gets into office. So they were thrown under a bus that has it's safety brake safely on. He still hasn't thrown Ahmadinejad under any bus, though. Obama still espouses a Winnie the Pook foreign policy.

Here's Obama's favorite poem:

Hug O' War
by Shel Silverstein

I will not play at tug o' war.
I'd rather play at hug o' war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.

For internet, dish is definitely NOT the way to go. Too slow and unreliable. Trust me on that one. We have cable for our net with wireless connections to other home PC's (i.e. for kids) to my hub.

HARARE, Zimbabwe, July 2 (UPI) --

Zimbabwe's opposition leader said Wednesday he will not join a government headed by President Robert Mugabe, who used violence and torture to win re-election.
Morgan Tsvangirai spoke at his home in Harare, the capital. He said no meaningful discussions will begin until the African Union appoints a new mediator to oversee the peace process, The Washington Post (NYSE:WPO) reported.

Good to hear. We have cable for internet and TV right now, but since they don't give us a single dime off for buying both, we're thinking about getting a dish for TV now. (Better basic station lineup.)

We've had DirecTV satellite for years now and are very happy with them. That said, DirecTV satellite for internet (now Hughesnet?) was awful. When they say you need a clear view of the southern sky, they mean it. 7/24 :)

Cable works just fine for internet at our home and we have multiple PC's hooked via wireless to the hub which is in my office.

Obama throws working women under the bus. While claiming he's all for women getting equal pay.

CNSNews.com) - While Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has vowed to make pay equity for women a top priority if elected president, an analysis of his Senate staff shows that women are outnumbered and out-paid by men.

...

On average, women working in Obama's Senate office were paid at least $6,000 below the average man working for the Illinois senator. That's according to data calculated from the Report of the Secretary of the Senate, which covered the six-month period ending Sept. 30, 2007. Of the five people in Obama's Senate office who were paid $100,000 or more on an annual basis, only one -- Obama's administrative manager -- was a woman.

Funny how liberals have long accused Repub. presidents of puppets of larger interests (Reagan was viewed as a simpleton who was a front man for corporate interests by the liberals of his time and Bush now is viewed as a chimp-like idiot who is a puppet of Cheney and Halliburton). Obama is a stooge and puppet in spades, with far less demonstrated independent thinking and vision than Reagan or Bush Jr. Even Bush Sr., a competent moderate Republican who was not good at the "vision thing" was far, far more his own man than Obama could ever be, and obviously he was far more accomplished.

Obama is a zero propped up by a collection of very shady characters. He is the ultimate puppet whose strings are pulled by a motley assortment of leftover 60s Marxists, black separatists and rich liberal malcontents who believe in social engineering. I won't say that Obama is a Muslim, but I think it's safe to say there are some sharia-lovers pulling some of the Obama-puppet's string as well.

Gawd, don't tell me that. My wireless worked fine until I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything -- all unneccessary, I might add, as the problem was the motherboard and not the software. Now, I can't get the wireless to work right. I called Linksys, and they said it was out of warranty and want to charge me $32 to help me set it up. I told them to kiss my ass, the problem isn't the hardware, it's the fucked up documentation that is useless and irrelevant.

I'll buy new equipment before I give them another dime.

Iran said on Wednesday it was ready to consider a US diplomatic presence in Tehran and called for direct flights between the two countries, nearly three decades after Washington severed ties with Iran.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to the United Nations, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki also accused Washington of putting unfair restrictions on Iranian media representatives who want to work in the United States. "Last year the Islamic Republic of Iran proposed direct flights between Iran and the United States," Mottaki said. (Reuters)

For the modem/TV problem try a reboot of all the components pull the power from the Modem, Router, & Cable box. Leave them off 2-3 minutes plug in the modem first let it reacquire it's signal for a minute the turn on the rest. I hope this fixes it. If it does it saves a service call if not it wasted 5 minutes.

Oooh, my best friend has been having a small wireless nightmare with Linksys. A real PITA when she moved to another house and got her internet set up. It's not working at all now, she has to plug her laptop in to go online. Son can't do his XBox Live stuff either. She's not happy.

I wound up buying a Linksys router after my much-ballyhooed Netgear POS quit for the 300th time last year. Kept dropping offline, had to reset it sometimes 3x/day. Bought the Linksys and it's been bulletproof.

I told them, I'm not computer illiterate and I couldn't figure out their documentation. Calling them was worse than useless as it was a waste of time and their people were arrogant asses. As I told them, I'll steer my students clear of Linksys products....

I had a Netgear router and it SUCKED. For some weird strange reason, I could not connect to LGF through this router, but could connect to every other site. I replaced the Netgear router with a Linksys and everything worked fine again.

I will admit that Linksys can be difficult to configure if you're a non-geek.

I'm a semi-geek and am going to have to print off the instructions. Pisses me off that on the box (for both the router and adapter), it says, just plug them and follow the instructions.

Doesn't work that way. I couldn't get the thing to work the first time I hooked it up and now that I have to reinstall it, I still can't...

Judge tosses lawsuit against federal wiretapping

A judge has tossed out a lawsuit filed by an Islamic organization that accused the Bush administration of illegally wiretapping its telephones without warrants

The now-defunct Al-Haramain (ell HAIR-uh-mean) Islamic Foundation, which was based in Ashland, Ore., says the government accidentally sent it a top-secret document while considering whether to label the group a terrorist organization. The group says the document appeared to be a log of telephone calls between organization officers and their attorneys, prompting the illegal wiretapping lawsuit.

STFD, but how in the hell do you make the mistake of sending the terrorist group you're investigating the fucking logs ?

Total incompetence or they better find that rat.

re: #443 christheprofessor

Powerline ethernet could be an alternative. The Linksys and Netgear hardware easily pushes over 100mbs so it can be faster than most g wireless. If someone taps into your powercircuit with the right adapter they can get on your network - but it would be interesting to see how they guess the hardware.

I've found it pretty reliable to cover an area that I don't want to run cable to - but need faster (streaming video) performance than wireless.

re: #483 WindHorse

LOL, Vista is a resource hog, MS seriously under reports the hardware requirements. That is if you want a system that runs well.

JCM's Vista minimums:
Single Processor, 3.2GHz or better.
Multi proc / core, 2 or more, 2Ghz or better.
Multi proc / core is preferable to single.
2GB RAM MIN, 4 is better.
Graphics THE BIGGIE!
AGP8x or PCIExpress Graphics 256MB per screen, 3D and DirectX.
If your machine has shared graphics memory Vista will suck. If the card can't handle the eye candy it hands it too the main proc and RAM slowing things down.

Cable at 100mbs? Wow! Most cable broadband services are between 6mbs for standard and 10mbs for 'premium' service. Wired ethernet (10Base100) will support 100mbs throughput. New hardware is supporting gigabit ethernet (1000mbs) and very affordable - but you need Cat5e or Cat6 cable and gigabit network hardware (router / switch and network card).

I've seen some special 'speedbooster' G wireless kick in above 100mbs and N generally will do so if within a reasonable range of the access point or router.

What's your security worry on the wireless?

It really seems to run to personal taste. I don't mind Vista and use it on several of my systems. Once the drivers got sorted out and I started using virtual PC's to run XP for the programs that were never updated for Vista - it's ok. More secure and again, once drivers updated, more reliable. On other PC's, I'm still running XP.

My wife doesn't want to go through the hassle to change, but my parents found Vista a lot easier to use and reliable than XP.

To each their own. I'm just waitng for Steve J to decide to build a Mac OS version that will compete with XP / Vista. I would bet he would get 30-40% market share of the home desktop market pretty quickly.

I agree McCain needs to step it up, but at least as far as I can tell, he's not really campaigning at all right now - just letting Obama alienate his core supporters (see, e.g., Kos) until after the conventions.
And, quite honestly, the youth vote is something of a mixed blessing: Obama will have lots of volunteers, but "youths" have been notorious in low turnout at the polls. I think the same is true with Blacks, but with Obama running, that could easily change.

re: #513 christheprofessor

Kragar might have the best solution, although it's a poser that the wired connection can 'see' the internet and the wireless cannot but it does see the router.

This requires some familiarity with going beyond the basic wizard style setups......My next step would be to check the router logs to see if I can isolate what's stopping the wireless connection. Could be a setting or could (worse case) be a failure with the router. Most routers, when you access their 'webpage' - [Link: 192.168.?.?...] (the gateway IP address followed by entering the username / password for access to the router), have a diagnostic tab that you can use to test the router.

I got wireless with comcast. The modem and router are upstairs, so the laptop works great on the first floor and outside, but I got this computer in the basement at the opposite end of the house, and I couldn't get the wireless card to work, or the USB wireless, so I got this device that plugs into the wall outlet. Same here. Furthermore:

States like VA and TX are being analyzed based on a 2006 vote that in both cases was won by the Dems through a dirty trick.

Undecided voters who wait till the last minute tend to break for the GOP, historically speaking.

The city of Denver and its environs is probably the part of Colorado most likely to be turning the state's polls a slight shade of blue. If the August convention turns out to be the fustercluck most of us anticipate it being, this can definitely affect Colorado's vote.

As one article points out, Blacks in the South already vote pretty close to their actual share of the population, so they can't win Obama any states in the South.

And we haven't even had a single Veep pick or a single debate at this point. Look at what the candidates, informed by internal polling, are doing right now: Obama's speeding through all the swing states. McCain's visiting allies as they stage rescues of hostages.

And the way Obama has been thowing folks under the bus lately, a lot of "younger" Obamamaniacs are sorta cooling to him right now (again, see, e.g., Kos).

Last year I built my current desktop - $200 for 4GB Ram (DDR2 800). Starting to build another one....Patriot 4GB Ram $66 net a $25 rebate.

RAM and DASD is cheap. Video cards on the other hand.......

That price can't include case, power supply, motherboard, etc... can it?

Been at a computer security class all this week and next for work. After the last few days, I wouldn't go to a wireless network if you paid me.

Just make it not worth the trouble for the hackers to break in. If you're Citibank, you have a problem, but hackers aren't going to spend hours to break into a home network.

If it is software, it is hard to tell. I've had it hang when I've shut down most of what I was running, and it hangs at random times. It might be due to wireless, because I haven't seen it at work. I now suspend Parallels before closing it to avoid the trouble of recovering a crashed Parallels session.
But I've had it hang with Parallels shut down, and nothing I started running.

Hey Kosh, I might know a thing or two about MacBook Pros. Suffice it to say it's company policy that I can't discuss what company I work for, but let's just say it is so I won't get pressed for rumors about a certain computer company....

Is the MacBook Pro under warranty or AppleCare?

Went into the control panel and turned of the wireless card. Shut down the computer, restarted the computer, went into control panel and turned the card back on... he's had no problems since.

It is under AppleCare. Passes disk utility, and hardware diagnostics. When it is frozen, not even the caps lock key works. No light. I open it, and the screen doesn't come on. Power/ s (or is it u) doesn't shut it down. I have to hard reboot.

re: #541 Occasional Reader

Explain. (As I send this over my wireless network)

A wireless network, by its very nature broadcasts its data to anyone with a receiver in range, as opposed to the point to point connection provided by a wired network. The encryption protocols used to encode these transmissions aren't nearly as robust as those used in a conventional wired network, due to their need to be able to provide service to various handheld devices which lack the processing power a regular PC has. With very little time, effort, or expenditure resources, anyone can monitor your personal internet usage, including things like bank records, MAC addresses, usernames and passwords without you ever noticing a problem. Basically, someone can drive by your house and start accessing your network and you would never notice. There are whole sites dedicated to this, like Wardriving.com.

If your router is one of the AirPorts (Extreme, Express, Time Capsule, etc.) there is a place in the AirPort Utility where you can set up Access Control by MAC address, and even set up time limitations for access.

I also turned on MAC address filtering, but it takes a hacker only a few minutes to spoof the MAC address, if he can get one from one of my systems.
(Old router was Netgear 815, new one is a new Linksys)

Sounds like your logic board is b0rked. BTW, you did reset the SMC by shutting it down, pulling it off power, removing the battery, and pressing the power button for 5 seconds, right?

576 RememberSekhmet?  Wed, Jul 2, 2008 9:37:54pm

re: #572 realwest

A freeze where you can't move the cursor, even with the internal trackpad, especially if you see video artifacts, tends to be an issue with the video chips on the logic board. If you can move the cursor, there are other possibilities to explore.

But if changing the USB port for the mouse fixed your issue, I don't think you are having video issues.

Yes, AppleCare talked me through it. I don't think they want to do any more since the HW diagnostics passed. I suppose I could take it to a store, but seriously, if it reproduces the problem there, I want them to just give me a new one. This occurs maybe one in 10 or 20 times, but I've had it occur every time I closed it for an entire weekend, and then not for another week.

Since I'll be going to bed soon, use my email (my nic should be blue) to reply, if there is more.

Just call us the tech support number. If you get escalated to a kind of put-upon sounding lady with a slight Texas accent, try to be nice to her, OK? :D

Of course, you can also take it to the Apple Store. An appointment is reccommended, unless you have a nice long time to wait. People like freak out around a holiday, so without an appointment you might be in for a long wait. Also, any authorized service provider will do. just look here for someone close.

There's a store near enough, but unless they can replace it that day, I'll have to get another machine to use meanwhile - and that won't be another Apple.
Last time took 3 trips; one for them to verify the problem and order parts (they didn't stock the display), leave it off in the morning (they took it before they opened, with some convincing) and then pick it up in the evening.

Right now, I'll see how often it occurs.
(This is my fourth laptop. One was a Compaq Pentium 120, and it had problems Compaq ended up giving me more memory and a better battery because of the way the screwed up the repairs. A Gateway had no problems, but they have gone way downhill since. And a Dell has been fine, except for power supply cables and batteries, but those are parts that wear out. It is just old and needs a wipe and reinstall, like Windows needs every so often.)

Heading to bed now.

Good suggestion. Almost all routers support limiting connecting devices by Mac address. This is a good home use suggestion. Just remember that you did it so you don't drive yourself nuts trying to figure out months later why the friends laptop doesn't connect to your network...or why the new super-duper wireless adapter you added to your PC doesn't connect.

If liberal is a meaningless term according to Dukakis, why do all libs running for President run away from that term like it's the plague?

The term must have some meaning otherwise Presidential candidates would embrace it like conservative candidates would embrace conservative label. Maybe it's that whole liberal anti america big tax elitist flyover thing.

As for the picture on the post perhaps you should frame the Obamanation's head where the eagle is in his jettisoned (for now) Presidential Seal (also missing, but there are so many things and people tossed under his bus, it's hard to put all of them in a limited space). Or maybe the cut and run eagle (chicken dove) could be above the Obamanation's head, laying it (like it did that crazy seal egg symbol in the original). Then you'd realize his head is full of crap for a reason.

Whenever my grandfather was stuck behind some clueless yokel in traffic he would mutter something about the driver ahead having one finger in their mouth and one finger where the sun doesn't shine, waiting for someone to holler: CHANGE!

I now realize that Obama was the one they all waited for.
