60s Radicals for Obama

Thu, Jul 3, 2008 at 9:21:48 am PDT

Daniel Flynn has a piece in City Journal about the support Barack Obama is receiving from former members of Students for a Democratic Society and Weather Underground, many of whom are involved directly in the Obama campaign: Obama’s Boys of Summer.

Michael Klonsky, whose disgust for mainstream politics led him to launch a new, Maoist Communist Party in the 1970s, today supports Barack Obama so enthusiastically that until recently he was blogging on the Illinois senator’s campaign website. And boycotting this November’s election, Klonsky maintains, would be a “tragic mistake.” He notes that Barack Obama isn’t Hubert Humphrey, 2008 isn’t 1968, and the strong movement he served back then is “relatively weak” now. “My own support for Obama is not a reflection of a radically changed attitude toward the Democratic Party,” Klonsky recently explained to me. “Rather, it’s a recognition that the Obama campaign has become a rallying point for young activists and offers hope for rebuilding the civil rights and antiwar coalitions that have potential to become a real critical force in society.”

Michael Klonsky is hardly the only ’68 radical supporting Obama this year. In 1968, when Mark Rudd organized the student strike that shut down Columbia University, the SDS chapter that he chaired ridiculed Kennedy and McCarthy as “McKennedy,” claimed that “neither peace candidate offers an alternative to the war policies of Lyndon Johnson,” and suggested “sabotage” as an alternative to voting. Rudd succeeded Klonsky as national SDS leader, presiding over the organization’s metamorphosis into Weatherman and performing “a liaison function” for the plot to bomb a Fort Dix soldiers’ dance that instead killed three Weathermen, including two of Rudd’s Columbia SDS colleagues. Today, Rudd renounces bombs, embraces ballots—and supports Obama. “Probably the biggest difference between Columbia SDS people in 1968 and in 2008 is forty years,” Rudd explained in an e-mail. “Most of us have lived with compromise our whole lives. As kids we were raving idealists who thought that ‘The elections don’t mean sh*t’ was a slogan that meant something to somebody. It didn’t.”

Then there’s Carl Davidson, who was one of SDS’s three elected national officers in 1968, when the organization first urged young people to refrain from voting. His disillusionment with traditional politics became so pronounced that, in the post-sixties hangover that followed, Davidson joined Klonsky in rejecting traditional politics for fringe Marxist movements. More recently, he helped organize the 2002 rally in which Obama first spoke out against the Iraq War and now serves as the webmaster of Progressives for Obama.

If there's one thing dumber than selling your soul to Satan, it's selling your soul to a Chicago Democrat.

Change!

The big question is, will Obama get the much sought after support of Tanya of the Symbionese Liberation Army?

4 Shakey Jakey  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 9:25:51am

The more things change, the more they remain the same. With one exception I didn't understand them then but I do now.

5 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 9:25:51am

Ayers is completely unrepentant. Klonsky sounds wistful about the lost opportunities to overthrow the government - or at least kill Americans, and this remains the cadre that Obama sought out.

I heard the author interviewed on the radio yesterday....

He said Bernardine Dohr and the Weathermen created a special hand signal of four fingers like a fork to show solidarity with the Manson family after they went on their killing spree.

And he calls himself a radical. Wimp!

10 loppyd  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 9:27:11am
In 1968, the Left served as unwitting allies of Republicans, costing the Democrats the White House by rioting at their convention and withholding votes from Hubert Humphrey. In 2008, it is their vocal support that may cost Barack Obama the presidency. Obama can take a page from the early days of the New Left, which—initially, at least—refused to allow discredited radicals to discredit it. Either Obama publicly divorces himself from radical supporters whose association does more for them than it does for him, or he faces the prospect of Bill Ayers as his Willie Horton.

Pretty please.

How weary I grow of these '60s radicals. They have trust funds and drive around in Lexus, have seldom, if ever done an honest days work in their entire privileged lives. The only thing I can figure out is that they have an enormous amount of innate guilt for being born in to wealth and privilege, so they react by being Marxists. They generally have several shrinks on retainer, are childless, and have few long term relations, including spouses.

I even know a guy who had an Ivy League education, but he went to work for an airline (not as an executive) because the American Communist Party told him to. He wasted his entire life like that.

Go ahead, ask me whatever you'd like about them.

An Irishman's Philosophy
In life, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you will get well or you will die.
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you die, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you will go to heaven or hell.
If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends
You won’t have time to worry!

Today's daily Gallop poll:

Obama 46%
McCain 44%

2% margin of error

That's what we call a statistical dead heat kids.

Obama limped across the finish line against Hillary and he's still limping.

Did you see Mika and Pat Buchanan obsessing over that poll this morning? I thought they were going to have a stroke!

BTW - I love this! and I adore our military fighters.

Betancourt, 46, was airlifted to freedom Wednesday in an audacious operation involving military spies who tricked the rebels into handing over their most prized hostages — including three U.S. military contractors — without firing a shot.

The stunning caper involved months of intelligence gathering, dozens of helicopters on standby and a strong dose of deceit: The rebels shoved the captives, their hands bound, onto a white unmarked Mi-17 helicopter, believing they were being transferred to another guerrilla camp.

Looking at helicopter's crew, some wearing Che Guevara shirts, Betancourt reasoned they weren't aid workers, as she'd expected — but rebels. This was just another indignity — the helicopter "had no flag, no insignia." Angry and upset, she refused a coat they offered as they told her she was going to a colder climate.

The fundies from the Westboro Baptist Church won't be in Pennsylvania to protest homosexuality at the funeral of a fallen soldier. Reason? They're off to California:

"The gays are marrying there, and there's those fires burning, and two soldiers from there died," said the woman who answered the church's phone this morning. "I'm positive they won't be in Pennsylvania. They've been in Pennsylvania a lot already." [Link: www.pennlive.com...]

Personally I'm not much into opera -- except for a few sturdy warhorses that just about everyone likes, such as the ''Escamillo Les Voici'' March and Chorus from Carmen, which has thrilled me since the days when I only knew it as the Bad News Bears theme song.

Anyhow, this is just my roundabout way of requesting a few volunteers to read my blog post about another sturdy operatic warhorse -- namely the ''Polovtsian Dances" segment from Prince Igor -- and respond with some comments. 'Cause I'm basically blowing the dust off of a blog that I haven't maintained for a couple years now, and I need to figure out how I feel about the blogspot commenting system.

Thanks in advance, etc.

If we substitute the word alternative for hippy, you have today's so-called cutting-edge youth movement. Obama is certainly trying to tap into that demographic. And with the support of his SDS buddies, my bet is that he is going to tank very soon.

At the appointed hour, an unmarked white helicopter set down in the jungle along the trekkers' path. Colombian security forces posing as FARC rebels jumped out, some wearing shirts emblazoned with the likeness of revolutionary icon Che Guevara.

Stretch Obama runs an ad that he worked his way through college but had only two summer jobs and the second one sounds more like a paid internship. As usual, he won't provide any proof of all the "work".

The ad begins with the announcer telling us that Obama "worked his way through college and Harvard Law." Actually, Obama took out loans to get himself through college, as we heard in a 60-second ad his campaign began running last month. We don't know how much assistance his family provided.

But "worked his way" through college and law school? The only back-up the campaign provided for this claim was a quote from Obama's book "Dreams from My Father" having to do with a construction job he had one summer while he was in college, and an article mentioning his job as a summer associate one year at a big Chicago law firm. We asked campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor if Obama held jobs during the school year, or other summer jobs, but he said only, "He had the two jobs I told you about." Unless Obama had a good bit more employment than his spokesman was able to describe for us, it's a real stretch to claim he "worked his way" through school.

I prefer Italian opera but I do love Borodin. The ''Polovtsian Dances" is a beautiful piece of Music but I thought it was a choral work for ballet, not opera...although I could be wrong. The melody from the ''Polovtsian Dances" was used for the theme from "Strangers in Paradise".

My favorite works by Borodin are his String Quartets No 1 & 2.

This CD is one of my all time favorites; dark, mysterious and gorgeous.

This is true.

I was only trying to point out that we should think of these things in such black & white terms. What I have found (started looking with the Kerry / Bush election) is that most people are just uninformed.

I have converted quite a few "middle ground independents" to a Conservative message by informing them.

Obam'uh (and McCain) are able to get away with their emotional speeches and bumpersticker policy statement because most people do not look any deeper than the surface.

Ask a die-hard Obam'uh supporter why he or she supports Obam'uh and you will get either (a) a non answer: like "Change", or "hope", (b) some other really shallow response, or (c) no real answer at all.

These folks are more dangerous than your typical, aging hippies. And they are totally amoral.
Don't have the link right now, but Billy boy Ayers has said, THIS YEAR, that he wished they'd done more back in the 60's.

Actually rw, that Ayers quote about not doing enough and wishing they'd done more appeared in NYT article that coincidentally ran n Sep. 11, 2001. Rather ironic, huh?

256 docremulac  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 11:01:16am

Well, here's my take on the whole Obama vs McCain thing. My tinfoil hat must not be working to control those mind control waves today because this theory is pretty wacky.

I don't think the Republicans want the presidency because of the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation with Iran. Here me out.

Hitting Iran for weapons of mass destruction, the same reason we hit Iraq is something that the Republican party couldn't survive if it went badly, or even worse than Iraq and one is hard pressed to see a situation where it would go "well". (I think we should bomb the crap out of them so this isn't a peace-nick screed) In walks this Democrat candidate, Obama, who promises to screw the situation up beyond belief and let the Democrats take all the blame. He says: "This is no problem at all, I'll sit down and have tea with them and when they see how nicely I smile, they'll drop their nuclear weapons program."

See the logic behind it? Iran is probably going to "run it's course" at this point, whether getting bombed by Israel or getting a nuke, nuking Israel and getting nuked out of existence in retaliation. Why take the blame by having a Republican in office? Let the Democrats take some heat for a change.

I ran this idea by my dad who brought me down to earth by pointing out that I'm probably giving the Republicans way to much credit for forward thinking and devious planning.

He's probably right. I just need a new tinfoil hat probably.

re: #254 ploome hineni

that article is so full of lies and off the wall assumptions I cannot finish reading it

makes me sock

The guy certainly is obvious regarding his agenda.

But this one, at the end, got a laugh from me (emphasis is mine):

"... embrace your Muslim heritage with the same vigor and eloquence with which you have embraced your white and black heritage."

His grandmother probably loves it too.

Isn't it a shame we have to do the job the media is supposed to be doing?

re: #254 ploome hineni

If nothing else the piece should be a catalyst for an Obama bumper sticker:

Many Muslim voters love Barack Obama.

I'm John McCain and I approve of that message.

It is a job they should be doing for themselves.....the MSM helping us out would be nice too.

George Carlin did a classic routine the new found Obama supporters. Is this the weatherman you were talking about Sharm?

268 Mardukhai  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 11:24:31am

I hate these bastards, although I admit I'm friends with one, a former Communist -- but this guy never had a dime, never played with bombs, never beat up a "fascist pig" *(e.g. non-leftist) and worked his whole life. (And he loves cops, even our disgusting Sheriff's Department, sees them as bulwarks against evil.)

Still, it takes a real jerk to defend the behavior of 60's radicalism, and I still take very personally the bombing of my dorm.

It also takes a jerk to trust them.

As a young adult of the 60's I had a very different view of EASY RIDER when it came out, I cheered for the Redneck...never an easy choice when surrounded by drugged out, smelly longhairs...although my 1911A1 and badge did help

As most thinking persons have realized, the reason these NUTroots Marxist "community organizers" (Klonsky and Rudd and their entourage) LOVVVE BHussein so much isn't because THEY have changed, grown up, become educated by life, because they haven't, not one bloody iota, but it is because HE IS THE MARXIST OF THEIR wetDREAMS!

Now, isnt' that special.....(channeling the Church Lady)

(and I knew Mark Rudd in the 60's -- as a YAF'er who infiltrated and attended SDS functions to find out what the hell they were up to.)

"Klonsky and Rudd" (sounds like some sort of scheister ambulance chasing skid row law office wedged between "Lola's Messages and Palm Readings" and "All Night Bail Bonds, No Bond too Big 24/7")

A GLOWING AND REMARKABLE ENDORSEMENT of "B.O. the Patriot."

It's the gift that keeps on giving.

Oh wait, do I hear the "ding ding ding" of THE bus backing up? the snip snip snip of scissors? --- could it be that we might see their TIRE'd faces along with the hammer and sickle logo on that photo of "BO, the Disassociator" ?

how does Afeef (akin to Athief on his mother's side) get published in WSJ?

I almost fell over laughing until I realized that Afeef was being serious...at least I think he is being serious....
(or was this really humour, like Kender's article at PJM about BO quitting smoking, which I took for serious....)

Whatchewtalkinbout? The slave-girl chorus right at the beginning is the very melody that got turned into "Strangers in Paradise." (What they're singing in the original Russian is basically May the winds carry our song back to our homeland, from which we were abducted.)

But it was way too short for a person who loves that melody.

282 EE  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 12:13:05pm

Barack Hussein Obama spent his college years as a Marxist. His 20 years with Jeremiah "God damn America" Wright were with a church that basically blended Marxism with the black power movement and a dab of the Bible, closely aligned with Louis Farrakhan's NOI which blended Marxism with the black power movement and a dab of Islam. Both are deeply anti-American. Wright accompanied Farrakhan to see Libyan dictator Muamar Kadaffy. Wright also gave his highest award, a lifetime achievement award to Farrakhan. The church bookstore of Trinity contained an amalgam of both Black Liberation Theology books and Nation of Islam material, because they had something important in common: Marxism and the black power movement and anti-Americanism.

What is common throughout Obama's background is the Marxist thread and anti-Americanism.

Now that he has gotten Hillary to suspend her campaign, he has exercised his quick-change artistry, done flip-flops to reverse his positions, and presented himself as a centrist -- for part of June, and for the months of July, August, September, and October. He has done this rapidly and deeply, in order to take advantage of the fact that people will forget. By the time October rolls around, the electorate (unless they are reminded) will have little or no recollection of the leftist positions that Obama took during the primary season, and will only be able to think of him as a centrist. This is a false conversion, done for the sake of getting elected. As the man who knows him best, Jeremiah Wright, said, Obama is a politician, and he will say what he needs to say in order to get elected.

283 hazzyday  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 12:16:10pm

Since Obama wants to move to the center. It's time to call him up on the Marxist agenda's of his friends. Is Obama gonna be a Marxist in office or a "free" person.

as one of their fellow beatnik singers (who sold out like they all do, sooner or later) would sing: "GYPSIES, TRAMPS & THEIVES." that, in a nutshell, is bho's core supporters, about as american as a copy of pravda.
