My guitar teacher would slap my hand and threaten to break my pinky finger if I placed it on the sound board.

I wish Tommy had been my guitar teacher.

July 3, 1863.
Gettysburg Pennsylvania.
Pickett's Charge.

The brigades of Wilcox and Perry, exposed to a heavy artillery fire from the fresh batteries moved to Gibbon's front again, and, seeing the repulse of the assault to their left, fell back to the main Confederate line.

Out of the fifty-five hundred men which Pickett took into action, fourteen hundred and ninety-nine surrendered, two hundred and twenty-four were killed, and eleven hundred and forty were reported wounded. Pickett lost twelve out of fifteen battle flags. Pettigrew's division, in which there was one brigade of North Carolina troops , lost in killed and wounded eight hundred and seventy-four, and in missing five hundred. Trimble's two North Carolina brigades lost in killed and wounded three hundred and eighty-nine, and in missing two hundred and sixty-one. The two brigades of Perry and Wilcox together lost three hundred and fifty-nine. Pettigrew's brigade of North Carolina regiments, commanded by Colonel Marshall, lost in the charge five hundred and twenty-eight, of which number three hundred were killed and wounded; and the Twenty-sixth North Carolina of this brigade, which regiment suffered greater losses during the war than any other on either side of the conflict, went into this charge with two hundred and sixteen men, and returned with but eighty-four. The percentage of losses in killed and wounded in the assaulting column, taken as a whole, was not extraordinary for the civil war. The place assaulted was less formidable than Fort Fisher, which was taken later in the war by Union troops, and the assault itself was far less successful than that of Meade's division at Fredericksburg. Its complete failure was due to the thorough dispositions made to meet it, and it is improbable that the result would have been reversed if McLaws and Hood , whose attention was occupied by the appearance of the Union cavalry on their right, had participated in the assault. The tactical skill which had prevented the rout of the Third Corps from involving the whole army in a defeat on the second day of the battle, was exerted with equal success in supporting the center under attack on the third day.

Good Guitar Player this Tommy Emmanuel. Very nice. Many guitarists, though not all tend to sing the notes they are playing. Johnny Lawrence, Jazz Guitar instructor @ Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor would do this when demonstrating a style or phrases in his class. it was/is very cool to watch & see.

Awesome stuff all around.

Here is the money quote:

My 16-month timeline, if you examine everything that I’ve said, was always premised on making sure that our troops were safe,” he said. “I said that based on the information that we had received from our commanders that one to two brigades a month could be pulled out safely, from a logistical perspective. My guiding approach continues to be that we’ve got to make sure that our troops are safe and that Iraq is stable.”
33 Typicalwhitey  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 1:19:35pm

Koskids are seething...

At what point does tacking to the center become selling out such that we are left with a candidate more like Clinton and less like the Obama I became excited about (once Edwards dropped)? Is it possible that we could be betrayed on the single most important issue of our time - ending this God damned war in Iraq and removing ALL our troops from that area?

I don't like what I'm seeing and want a clear avenue to both support Obama and hold him accountable...now and when he's our President.

There they sleep - on fields made immortal by their valor. More than a third of a century lies between them and us. What a change! And here we are tonight - Veterans of the Confederacy and Veterans of the Union - hosts and guests, at a common festive board in patriotic accord - brothers in a common citizenship - equal - sharing with equal pride the greatness and the lustre - North and South , has imperishably crowned this great Republic of freedom - all made possible, seemly, and hearty, by that great, unequaled achievement of our dead, in MAKING DEFEAT AS ILLUSTRIOUS AS VICTORY.
What more can we ask for our beloved dead than that all America honor their memory, and that the world and history acknowledge that their heroic deeds have exalted the greatness, the glory, and the fame of the nation.

On the surface of it, yes, but (IMHO) those who made it into the Union lines were just too few in number to do "permanent" damage to the overall position.

What more can we ask for our beloved dead than that all America honor their memory, and that the world and history acknowledge that their heroic deeds have exalted the greatness, the glory, and the fame of the nation.
-From Gettysburg- Pickett's Charge and Other War Addresses, by Judge James F. Crocker, in response to the toast: "Our Confederate Dead"

* * *
It was hot as Iraq at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania--if you've ever been there in summer you know it must have been an awful four days.

Our country is amazing for having healed & forged a new Union dedicated to the proposition of government by the people, for the people, of the people.

Best line at ABC comments:

Obama has that “new boyfriend” syndrome. Lots of excitement and he looked damn near perfect in those early days. You know, when you get to project on him all those traits you’re looking for beyond cute and smart - character, depth, humor, a moral center. As time goes on, he’s no longer the shiny new thing. He disses your best friend (behind her back of course), you begin to see his smarminess when he sucks up to your boss and he just doesn’t fit in or get your family’s zany, noisy humor - and he’s stopped trying. The ultimate deal breaker - you learn that he’ll do or say anything to get what he wants. You know the type - you’ve dated him or perhaps it’s your daughter or a good friend. He just never lived up to the promise of those first, early days. Best to heed the advice you’ve given or gotten - Lose him quick and move on.

I have a serious question

"I've always said that the pace of withdrawal would be dictated by the safety and security of our troops and the need to maintain stability. That assessment has not changed," said Obama. "And when I go to Iraq and have a chance to talk to some of the commanders on the ground, I'm sure I'll have more information and will continue to refine my policies."

If the pace of withdrawal would be based, at least somewhat, on what the commander say, then why is he JUST NOW going to go and ask them?

Still got it, bloody painful. I am takin ibruprofen for pain and anti-inflam.
Gout is caused by the white blood cells attacking the crystaline uric acid that accumulates in the joints. It builds up to a point that it "breaks" and the attack starts. Plenty of water to help flush.

I realize that. I don't know the mechanism but the antibiotics are useful along with the other treatment regimen. I saw someone else comment on the same treatment on that thread and have read that the inflammation caused by the uric acid acts as a focal point for something that the antibiotics helps lessen. I know they worked for me. Took like 2 days of 2 daily doses of 500mg amoxicillin and relief. Just a friendly suggestion as I'm no Doctor, I just know how painful and debilitating it can be. Good luck!

First a very Happy 4th of July to all!

I watched and listened to the CNN coverage of the rescue of Betancourt, the three brave Americans and the eleven brave Columbian Soldiers / Law enforcement officers. I heard Ms. Betancourt's comments and wondered about her desire to open a dialog with what's left of FARC. She, I thought, took great pains to protect the individuals who were charged with guarding her and the others.

Reflecting upon the great carnage that was the War Between The States, and the aftermath of Reconstruction, I am struck by the innate goodness of most combatants. In the instance of the Civil War, Thank G-d that there was a Frontier, where the defeated Southerners and war weary soldiers from both sides, could go to make a new life - many of the soldiers who served in the Calvary were ex-confederates - their officers Northerners. How difficult it must have been for former enemies to learn to trust and depend upon each other in a new land.

All I can say is G-d Bless America! And G-d Bless all you wonderful Lizards, too.

Bwahaha, there's pork in Baghdad, before Arugula!

"...Meanwhile, Der Spiegel has an encouraging report on Iraq:

Pork is available in Baghdad once again. Not just in the Green Zone, where US diplomats can enjoy their spare ribs and Parma ham, but also across the Tigris River, in the real Baghdad, at "Al-Warda" on Karada Street. Bassim Dencha, 32, one of the few Christians remaining in Iraq and the co-owner of Baghdad's finest supermarket, has developed a supply line from Syria. As a result, he now has frozen pork chops and bratwurst arranged in his freezers, next to boxes of frozen French fries and German Black Forest Cakes. And the customers are buying.

This is certainly good news, but pork chops, bratwurst and Black Forest cake are a distinctly German way of measuring progress.

Lincoln called Grant east because Grant had proven his ability to do what needed to be done -- get hold of wily Bobby Lee and not let go, grind the Army of Northern Virginia down mercilessly.

Petersburg may look like a stupid way to have fought the war, but by the time it was over, Joe Johnston had been forced to retreat into North Carolina and Sheridan had scraped the Shenandoah Valley clean. Lee's AofNV was all that was left.

Lord Phillips said that any sanctions must be 'drawn from the laws of England and Wales'. Severe physical punishment - he mentioned stoning, flogging or the cutting off of hands - was 'out of the question' in Britain, he said.

Reflecting upon the great carnage that was the War Between The States, and the aftermath of Reconstruction, I am struck by the innate goodness of most combatants.

Two armies faced off at Appomattox. The ragged remnants of the great Army of Northern Virginia had been run to ground. As Lee rode into the town to meet with Grant, men of the opposing forces began walking out to meet each other inbetween the lines.

Grant offered Lee the kind of terms which Lincoln had requested months before, in a meeting outside Petersburg. Officers were to keep their sidearms. Each enlisted men was allowed to take a horse. Sherman did the same with Johnston further south.

Hearing of it, the Radical Republicans were irate, but there was nothing they could do. It might have been, in a way, Lincoln's final gift to his country.

In much of Sherman's campaign, the South wasted huge amounts of time looking for Sherman's supply lines before they realized what he was doing and by then, it was too late.

And, Richmond put Hood in command of the forces defending Atlanta. Hood was a slugger. He went in slugging. Sherman could slug harder.

Joe Johnston was given the impossible task of trying to pick up the pieces.

Yes despite the numerous claims by racists and anti-Semites, Jews have learned to live within the Country's laws while still holding true to their religious principles.

Despite the fact that Jews have been in the United States since its Revolution against England, they have never asked the Christian majority to change the laws of the Country to submit to Halacha.

Islam should do the same. Get along or go home.

America means that Rush can take on Harry Reid, Al Gore, and even Bill Clinton, without fear of physical retribution. Charles can highlight the CBS fraud that was intended to swing a presidential election.

Yes. The musket and rifle balls of the day were nothing like our M-16 "poodle shooter" bullets. They made a helluva mess of whatever they hit.

You'll see in may battle field pictures, bodies will be partial disrobed. Frequently a soldier would be hit and not die instantly, they would remove clothing to find the wound, chest or stomach wounds would be lethal either through bleeding or later infection. The was no way to remove wounded quickly from the field of battle, and even when they did medicine of the time could not help with someone bleeding out, or a later infection.

The road to Washington, DC was even clearer a year later, in July, 1864, when Jubal Early's command ground to a halt a couple of miles from where I sit, right on Georgia Avenue, within the District of Columbia. Had it not been for the sapping victory at the Battle of Monocacy a couple of days earlier (against Gen. Lew Wallace, later the author of Ben Hur), a straggling column, nonexistent supply lines and the oppressive Washington heat, Early's Confederates would have been less than a five mile march from the White House. Instead, they turned back in front of the walls of Fort Stevens.

No, as Mandy said you're not a guest. America welcomes any religion that can be practiced peacefully, and the laws should reflect that.
At the same time, though, since most people are either believing christians or follow the traditions as such, it's absurd when one is offended at being wished Merry Christmas or what have you. (I don't think many people actually are offended, I think there is just hyper-sensitivity to such.)

In the same way, a law that forces a store or such closed on Sunday is wrong, but a post office or store that decided to of its own accord, as most of the customers were in church that day, is not being discriminatory.

I saw a battle photo of an insurgent who had been hit with fire from a 50 cal. I saw his neck, his ears held together by a U shaped loop of skin where his face and head used to be.

Shock and Awe!

I've read that the VC whom Kerry chased around behind a hooch had already been wounded by a .50.

freedom of religion means Jews are free to practice their religion which includes our having the Sabbath on Friday night/ sat. day. and feel free to work on Sunday. If people are uncomfortable with that they really don't believe in freedom of religion

Honoring the Sabbath is such a powerful concept. It allows us to focus on family and spirituality instead of acquisition and purchased entertainment. (old fashioned family produced entertainment is wonderful.)

Only after they saw the black hats of the Iron Brigade begin filing into Fort Stevens' trenches.

Our friend from Arkansas rescued his daughter and her children when she was stranded North of New Orleans after Katrina. He parked his car, walked miles on foot, and led her out, using scout skills to avoid dogs and armed gangs. He was armed too, ex-Vet, but he avoided the confrontations. It's an amazing story

Freedom of religion doesn't compel anyone to help you fulfil your religion, anymore than freedom of speech means Charles must allow anyone to post anything here.
It would have been nice if they had accomadated you, but America has no less freedom of religion because some buisnesses won't support your practice of it.

One of the most interesting stories of the Civil War was how the war began and ended on the property of the same man.

Mr. MacLean owned the property on which the first battle of Manassas occurred, and when the second battle came, he pulled up stakes and moved to someplace a little quieter, in Appamatox. 4 years later he awakens to find the armies once again assembled on his property. Only this time, to negotiate peace, for which he volunteered his parlor, gladly.

Wow! I've read just about everything I could get my hands on about the Civil War and totally missed this story! How fascinating!

A lot of the Virginians with Early remembered those Black Hats and rightly wanted little to do with them. Of course, the Iron Brigade was backed up by, among others, the Quartermaster Corps and mobilized invalids, having been issued ammo and two days' rations. The present-day park at Fort Stevens is a poor 1930's reproduction, but the "Battery above Rock Creek" which offered support fire is in an excellent state of preservation, as it is difficult to access without a map.

I just searched "Why Sunday and not Saturday" and found this. Intersting reading.

The Sabbath was given to Israel, not the church. The Sabbath is still Saturday, not Sunday, and has never been changed. ...

Sabbath keeping is not required of the Christian—be it Saturday or Sunday. The first day of the week, Sunday, the Lord's Day (Revelation 1:10) celebrates the New Creation, with Christ as our resurrected Head. We are not obligated to follow the Mosaic Sabbath—resting, but are now free to follow the risen Christ—serving. .

348 DistantThunder  Thu, Jul 3, 2008 3:37:36pm

Obama's Patriotism: A Vet's Perspective

I would also add, “Don’t tell me that symbols don’t matter. Putting your hand over your heart when saying the Pledge. Just a symbol. Treating the Flag with reverence. Just a symbol. Wearing a Flag lapel pin. Just a symbol. And guess what, - symbols matter. It should matter even more for the representatives of our government. It is a part of being mindful about our freedom. It is part of showing the next generation that these ideals are the principles of this Nation. These principles are why our fathers, mothers, sons, daughters are called upon sometimes to risk losing their lives. Symbols matter. They slow the decay of ideas by causing us to remember.

That is why this photo creates in me such distress. Sen. Obama might become President and he doesn’t have a clue about what being Patriotic means. There is a level of arrogance in his actions that slaps everyone who has had to answer the call to arms. I believe he refers to us as the clingers. The clingers to guns and religion whose forefathers founded this great country and in January of 2009 might become his subjects. The Senator seems to only see the negative in America and not its strengths. He must have learned that from his pastor.

When the Union camps at Cedar Creek were overrun, much of Sheridan's army ran. The Sixth Corps reformed ranks. Early saw them, and said that they'd soon run away, like the rest.

Confederate General John B. Gordon told him, "That is the VI Corps, General. It will not go unless we drive it from the field."

Feminists in the U. S. have tried to pass laws that tie in the religious divorce with the civil divorce, claiming this will protect Jewish women from becoming "agunot." It was a very bad idea and now it seems like an even worse idea.

Cedar Creek is one of the National Park Service's newest battlefields. Right off I-81, it has to be one of the prettiest battlefields of the War, being in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, with spectacular views of the Alleghenies and The Blue Ridge. Me Pappy made it his duty to retrace all the Virginia campaigns with the family, during the centennial, and I think we skipped only Sailor's Creek and Cedar Creek, as they had not been opened yet. Lord bless him.

The Reform movement has, for the most part, restored Shabbat to Saturday, though I believe there are some holdout congregations.

They tried that experiment in the mid-1800's, but resumed Saturday Sabbath over 100 years ago. Some would say they eliminated Sabbath altogether.

As is always the case. One wonders what we would be like today if the CSA had won, or God forbid Hitler.
I think the most glaring example of your point was Soviet Revisionism.
The victor Bolshevik's just rewrote history. Somehow Molotov's memory ran afoul of the Soviet dogma, so voila they just sanatized him from the history books

He's good, but he would spund a whole lot better with a nylon string guitar -- NOT like the one in the background, which has a narrow, tapered neck. There would be a lot fewer squeaks when he moves the fingers of his left hand, and fewer missed notes.

For the record, I play a classical model with a wide neck made of rosewood. Call me a purist.

Does anyone know how it came to pass that Christians' day of rest is Sunday and Jews' day of rest is Saturday? When you come right down to it, Jews had their day of rest before Christianity even existed. So my guess (and it is only a guess) is that at some point Christians decided to have a different day of rest in order to distinguish Christianity from Judaism.

Probably Hallmark.

re: #351 Alouette

Feminists in the U. S. have tried to pass laws that tie in the religious divorce with the civil divorce, claiming this will protect Jewish women from becoming "agunot." It was a very bad idea and now it seems like an even worse idea.

Actually it's a very GOOD idea. It would only mean that civil divorces can not become final until all previously existing contracts are fulfilled. That would include a ketuba, or marriage contract.

And please don't call me a feminist! (I'm egalitarian. I think that if women can play on men's teams, men can play on theirs.)
