An Independence Day Gift

Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 8:14:08 am PDT

More than 1,200 soldiers serving in Iraq gave America a precious gift today.

BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 1,200 US troops serving in Iraq signed up for extended service in the military to mark America’s national day on Friday.

At least 1,215 troops re-enlisted for periods ranging from two to six years at the ceremony held at the spacious Al-Faw palace of executed dictator Saddam Hussein near Baghdad airport.

General David Petraeus, the head of US-led coalition forces in Iraq, said he was “proud of their decision to re-enlist and help the people of Iraq win their most important battle ... freedom.”

The US military has regularly re-enlisted service members in Iraq but Friday’s swearing-in was one of the largest, the military said.

Because if America doesn't help fight for Freedom- who will?

Hi Sharm - Happy Independence Day to you!
And you're quite correct: there are freedom loving people all over the World, but only One Nation which has, over her 232 year history given so much of it's national treasure and the lives of it's sons and daughters in the cause of Freedom: The United States of America.
God Bless Her.

On a side note, the Philippines was finally granted independence from the United States on July 4, 1946. In 1964, President Diosdado Macapagal (the father of our current president) changed the official celebratory date of Philippine Independence Day to June 12 to mark the 1898 signing of the local Declaration of Independence.

Mainly because what happened was Spain sold the Islands to America.

MUCH later on they had a story that ONE American platoon (roughly 40 men) was ambushed by the Taliban with the result that 55 Taliban were killed. In that one encounter. If we maintain the kill ratio we have had, pretty soon there won't be any Taliban left to fight.

re: #39 realwest

Hi, and happy Independence Day to you as well.

I don't think they ever saw a U-boat but they were nearly blown out of the water by a US Navy patrol boat one night. The yacht only had one side painted navy gray at the time. The unpainted side was suddenly lit up with a search light and the boat with the light identified itself as US Navy and demanded to know who they were. Well, at the time, when the Coast Guard commandeered yachts, they made the owners auxiliary officers of the Coast Guard and gave them CG crews. Turns out that the owner, who was an American citizen, was German and had in fact served as a cook on a U-boat in WW1. So, out he pops yelling, "Vas is los?" and my father and the others are telling him to shut the hell up, he is going to get them all killed. They finally pursuaded to Navy boat to go around to the painted side and all was well thereafter. At a later meeting, the captain was told that they came a few seconds away from being sunk...

My father eventually ended up on an LST that landed the first troops in the Okinawa invasion (at Keramo Retto, I believe it was called) about 5 days before the main landings on Okinawa proper.

72 Sgt.Slappy  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 8:46:29am
New England farmers did not think of war as a game, or a feudal ritual, or an instrument of state power, or a bloodsport for bored country gentlemen. They did not regard the pursuit of arms a noble profession. In 1775, many men f Massachusetts had been to war. They knew its horrors from personal experience. With a few exceptions, they thought of fighting as a dirty business that had to be done from time to time if good men were to survive in a world of evil.

(snip)

Once committed to what they regarded as a just and necessary war, these sons of Puritans hardened their hearts and became the most implacable of foes. Their many enemies who lived by a warrior-ethic always underestimated them, as a long parade of Indian braves, French aristocrats, British Regulars, Southern planters, German fascists, Japanese militarists, Marxist ideologues, and Arab adventurers have invariably discovered to their heavy cost.

Huh, yesterday they were all lit up over the fact that June was the worst month for casualties for the Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, 42.
MUCH later on they had a story that ONE American platoon (roughly 40 men) was ambushed by the Taliban with the result that 55 Taliban were killed. In that one encounter. If we maintain the kill ratio we have had, pretty soon there won't be any Taliban left to fight.
But you'd never know or guess that from following the MSM - unless you dig deep into their stories.

They have thousands more in Pakistan in training in the Madress'.
Sad but true. And now with the NW and SW tribal areas in fundamentalist control there are more waiting in line.
They have to pay for children to attend school and the poor go to the Madress' - it is the only way they can ever learn to read an write.
There they are indoctrinated. But it is free indoctrination.

What Being An American Means To Me-

When I look at the state of the world around me, I can only thank God for my American Liberties. That I can disagree with my government and not be sent to jail. That I can disagree as a woman with my father and not be murdered for dishonoring him. That I am entitled to be treated equally under the law as much as the next American. That I am guaranteed a defense in the court system with witnesses and protections. That I have as much opportunity as any other American based on my abilities and not a birth right. That I have freedom to Worship my Creator and not be forced to believe as the government would dictate to me. I am a free woman, I am an American, and I thank God for it today and every day.

Happy Independence Day!

Floherty captures the tense activity of No. 4 gun of Coast Guard manned LST 770 under aircraft attack at Iwo Jima." That is my father's ship, and they were never at Iwo Jima (he should know -- he was on it from the time it left New Orleans until it returned to the states after the war and occupation duty in Japan). He does remember there being a combat artist aboard. I've e-mailed the site's administrator about it, but he never changed it.

After the brigade had marched, Gage himself intervened, and sent two ammunition wagons with an escort of one officer and thirteen men. This little convoy was intercepted on the road by a party of elderly New England men from the alarm lists, who were exempt from service with the militia by reason of their age. These gray-headed soldiers did not make a formidable appearance, but they were hardened veterans who made up in experience what they lacked in youth, and were brilliantly led by David Lamson, described as a "mulatto" in the records.
With patience and skill these men laid a cunning ambush for the British ammunition wagons, waited until they approached, and demanded their surrender. The British drivers were not impressed by these superannuated warriors, and responded by whipping their teams forward. The old men opened fire. With careful economy of effort, they systematically shot the lead horses in their traces, killed two sergeants, and wounded the officer in command.
The surviving British soldiers took another look at these old men, and fled for their lives. They ran down the road, threw their weapons into a pond, and started running again. They came upon and old woman named Mother Batherick, and promptly surrendered to her, and begged her protection.
"If one old Yankee woman can take six grenadiers, how many soldiers will it require to conquer America?"

At least 1,215 troops re-enlisted for periods ranging from two to six years at the ceremony held at the spacious Al-Faw palace of executed dictator Saddam Hussein near Baghdad airport.

Menotomy (modern day Arlington, MA.) was the home of Samuel Whittemore, seventy-eight years old and badly crippled, but an old soldier and a strong Whig. When he heard the Regulars were coming, Whittemore armed himself with a musket, two pistols and his old cavalry saber, and took a strong position behind a stone wall, 150 yards from the road. He waited patiently for the British column to approach. When it came in range, Whittemore got off five shots with such speed and accuracy that a large British detachment was sent to root him out. As the Regulars assaulted his position, Whittemore killed one soldier with his musket, and shot two more with his pistols. He was reaching for his saber when a British infantryman came up to him and shot away part of his face. Others thrust their bayonets into his body. After the battle he was found barely alive, bleeding from at least fourteen wounds. Friends carried him to Dr. Cotton Tufts of Medford, who shook his head sadly. But Samuel Whittemore confounded his physician. He lived another eighteen years to the ripe age of ninety-six, and populated a large part of Middlesex County with a progeny of Whittemores who are today as tough and independent as the sturdy old rebel who stood alone against a British brigade.

More than 1,200 soldiers serving in Iraq gave America a precious gift today.

...

General David Petraeus, the head of US-led coalition forces in Iraq, said he was “proud of their decision to re-enlist and help the people of Iraq win their most important battle ... freedom.”

Wait. Are these 1200 soldiers working for America or Iraq?

Resolving this confusion is necessary to defeat the jihad.

131 haakondahl  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 10:08:07am

The feckless sons-of-bitches on the left who sneer at our military are compensating for the thing that haunts them--they know that behind all of their excuses, their moralizing, their smug superiority to those who Get Things Done--they are staring down the barrel of a lifetime of reproach and recrimination that they didn't go. Others went for them.
The temperature of the hatred on the left is in direct proportion to the burning shame each one of those biological males feels at never having become a Man, and while you don't have to be in the military to become one--when your country is in danger that is a very good place to start.

Males are wired to protect. Men actually do it. Leftists shout excuses.

re: #139 haakondahl

I am not at all confused. Working in Iraq is working for the sake of America. This is a global war. Not getting exactly what your wish list was? Tell Santa.

OK, so all the confusion is cleared up. You believe that giving democracy is giving freedom, and that giving freedom to Iraqis is working for the sake of America.

I don't suppose I could convince you that democracy != freedom?

Or that freedom has a prerequisite: a rational culture? Without this prerequisite, it will degenerate into some form of dictatorship.

More importantly, this colossal waste of time and money in Iraq is keeping us from a critical project. Iran and Saudi Arabia are the biggest financiers of terrorism and have been so for decades. It is not an exaggeration to say that they are waging a war against us via their terrorist proxies.

While we're all bogged down in Iraq, we can't muster the resources, energy, or determination to defeat these enemies.

By the way, Iran is getting closer every day to having a nuclear bomb. They are also working on ballistic missile technology.

It is not "confusion" to say that overseeing elections, rebuilding schools, and hunting down armed gangs in Iraq is not worth the lives of Americans nor is it a higher priority than dealing with our enemies.

I am extremely concerned that Iran will detonate nuclear bombs in the US and in Israel. Even if not, I think it is likely that al-queda style terrorists will commit another act of mass-murder on US soil.

I hope I am wrong. I would rather be called "confused" on a LGF forum 1000 times over than be proven right by such atrocities.

I think we still have time to act to stop it. But not if we lose sight of the real goal or the actual enemy. Not if we devote 100% of our resources to giving a "gift" to Iraqis.

Ack. TMZ's salute to patriotism.

Several of those pictures give new meaning of the term "clueless boobs."

You got that right.  I'm torn on the Kid Rock photo because on one hand I think he's really trying to get it right, on the other hand his parents probably shouldn't let him wander out alone in public.

When I go here I see the red, white, & blue fireworks display logo ... but you don't?

I just got back from BWI...about 250 troops came home and were welcomed by 400 people at the gate.

I've done this several times now...there's a group that has organized to greet as many troop flights as possible.

This one happened to be on the 4th of July...of the groups I've greeted, this one seemed especially moved. Many tears of joy from our soldiers. Most are not stopping at BWI, so they are all surprised anyone is there to greet them.

Here are my pics from just a couple hours ago:

What a great way to spend the 4th. Happy Birthday America!

Thank you, yes, we're doing okay.  Glad we are still allies in this war against the Islamofascism.  The West (and we members of it) owes a gratitude to GB that can't ever be repaid.  The US is proud to stand beside you as, I suppose, are New Zealand, Australia, etc.

Please share. It was a remarkable moment.

I forgot to mention, there was an Iraqi national on the flight. I don'y have all the details, but he was supposedly in their military and was making his first trip to America. He was quite stunned.

Also, one of the troops was weeping and couldn't go on. He said he had served 27 years and nobody had ever greeted him when he returned from a deployment.

One of the folks took him by the hand and walked him through.

If you can make one of these events, they are quite moving.

Thanks,

--JB

If you reenlist in a combat zone your reenlistment bonus is tax free.

I'm not trying to take anything away from their actions, just pointing out that there is a monetary reason to reenlist there.

It's cool with me, they earned it.

(I'm retired military so please don't freakin jump on me for this post)

I agree with you and I think they deserve a lot more than even that.  If it was up to me, the warriors for our country would never pay a tax again in their lives.  Think of how few, out of the entire nation, serve.  It would be a drop in the bucket and I doubt it would economically hamper us at all.  Of course, my mind is full of such crazy notions ...

Kulhwch

Most veterans don't want a lot of perks for serving, they jsut do their duty and move on.

Everytime I see a homeless bum on a corner holding up a sign that reads veteran it makes my blood boil. (And I hate to have boiled blood.) I have mused of standing on the same corner with my own sign that reads

Veteran, I have a house, a job, and food; like almost all veterans, I don't want a handout.

186 Sloppy  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 8:44:05pm

It seems to me that tonight and for the past couple of nights there have been more fireworks sounds (unsanctioned, free-lance, illegal), than on previous Independence Days. It might be casual contempt for our city's fireworks laws, but I prefer to think it's a pure sign of patriotism, and I applaud those responsible.

187 US Navy Wife  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 10:45:30pm

This seems like the perfect thread to allow John Adams to have his say:

Yesterday the greatest Question was decided, which ever was debated in America, and a greater perhaps, never was or will be decided among Men. A Resolution was passed without one dissenting Colony "that these united Colonies, are, and of right ought to be free and independent States, and as such, they have, and of Right ought to have full Power to make War, conclude Peace, establish Commerce, and to do all the other Acts and Things, which other States may rightfully do." You will see in a few days a Declaration setting forth the Causes, which have impell'd Us to this mighty Revolution, and the Reasons which will justify it, in the Sight of God and Man. A Plan of Confederation will be taken up in a few days.

When I look back to the Year 1761, and recollect the Argument concerning Writs of Assistance, in the Superiour Court, which I have hitherto considered as the Commencement of the Controversy, between Great Britain and America, and run through the whole Period from that Time to this, and recollect the series of political Events, the Chain of Causes and Effects, I am surprized at the Suddenness, as well as Greatness of this Revolution. Britain has been fill'd with Folly, and America with Wisdom, at least this is my judgment. -- Time must determine. It is the Will of Heaven, that the two Countries should be sundered forever. It may be the Will of Heaven that America shall suffer Calamities still more wasting and Distresses yet more dreadfull. If this is to be the Case, it will have this good Effect, at least: it will inspire Us with many Virtues, which We have not, and correct many Errors, Follies, and Vices, which threaten to disturb, dishonour, and destroy Us. -- The Furnace of Affliction produces Refinement, in States as well as Individuals. And the new Governments we are assuming, in every Part, will require a Purification from our Vices, and an Augmentation of our Virtues or they will be no Blessings. The People will have unbounded Power.

Time has been given for the whole People, maturely to consider the great Question of Independence and to ripen their judgments, dissipate their Fears, and allure their Hopes, by discussing it in News Papers and Pamphletts, by debating it, in Assemblies, Conventions, Committees of Safety and Inspection, in Town and County Meetings, as well as in private Conversations, so that the whole People in every Colony of the 13, have now adopted it, as their own Act. -- This will cement the Union, and avoid those Heats and perhaps Convulsions which might have been occasioned, by such a Declaration Six Months ago. But the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.

I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. -- Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.

He wrote this to his wife on July 3, 1776. I wish we hadn't let him down.
