Krauthammer on Obama's 'Seasonal Principles'

Fri, Jul 4, 2008 at 10:20:12 am PDT

Charles Krauthammer on Barack Obama’s clumsy lurch away from the radical left: A Man of Seasonal Principles.

You’ll notice Barack Obama is now wearing a flag pin. Again. During the primary campaign, he refused to, explaining that he’d worn one after Sept. 11 but then stopped because it “became a substitute for, I think, true patriotism.” So why is he back to sporting pseudo-patriotism on his chest? Need you ask? The primaries are over. While seducing the hard-core MoveOn Democrats that delivered him the caucuses — hence, the Democratic nomination — Obama not only disdained the pin. He disparaged it. Now that he’s running in a general election against John McCain, and in dire need of the gun-and-God-clinging working-class votes he could not win against Hillary Clinton, the pin is back. His country ‘tis of thee.

In last week’s column, I thought I had thoroughly chronicled Obama’s brazen reversals of position and abandonment of principles — on public financing of campaigns, on NAFTA, on telecom immunity for post-Sept. 11 wiretaps, on unconditional talks with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — as he moved to the center for the general election campaign. I misjudged him. He was just getting started.

The MSM won't notice; they'll just say that his positions have evolved. [Ducks, runs for cover.]

I like the "seasonal principles" line, versus the "seasoned principles"...great play there!

And it fits B-HO to a Tee.

6 paint-right  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 10:26:53am

It would seem that both sides are beginnning to call out Obie on his switchback-filled road to the White House, like the expose on his community organizing debacle in Chicago ( Boston globe?) but the MSM often puts a kinder spin on it. What was the term... reconsideration.? upon further reflection?

Whatever it is , I'm sure it's nuanced ...never outright flip-flopping.

Conservatives don't have that luxury.

Two weeks ago, I predicted that by Election Day Obama will have erased all meaningful differences with McCain on withdrawal from Iraq. I underestimated Obama's cynicism.

That is devastating!

Of course, it's the absolute truth, too!

The scary thing is that it is working. People take him at his words and really believe he's a centrist who can bring Reagan Democrats back into the fold. That's the Obama campaign's pitch and if the media doesn't expose who Obama really is - and they won't - it will take hold and decide the election.

On a couple of nonpolitical Usenet groups and other forums I visit, recently a couple of people have commented that the OT topics there were mostly started by conservatives - and it seems to be true. I think Hillary misjudged her position in the Democratic party and expected a coronation at the convention, so she started out in the primaries appearing more centrist than Obama, because she knows that to actually win the election, you can't just appeal to the extreme elements of the Democratic Party, no matter how many of them there are. In short, I think she ambushed herself!
Obama's major problem now is that the extreme elements of the Democratic Party are not only not still saying "yea, Obama" but are actually saying "Boo Obama" - and that's because Obama and his campaign couldn't figure out a way to get to the center (and, btw, they ain't there yet) without pissing off the very folks who made it likely that he'll be nominated!

Bush salutes new Americans at July 4 ceremony
President heckled during event at Thomas Jefferson's former home

[Link: www.msnbc.msn.com...]

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia - President Bush invoked the memory of Thomas Jefferson Friday in welcoming new U.S. citizens at a naturalization ceremony at Monticello, saying "I'll be proud to call you a fellow American."

On his final U.S. Independence Day as president, Bush told an audience Friday at the home of the Declaration of Independence's author that he was honored to be present for the naturalization. Shouts from protesters were heard during Bush's remarks, and the president responded by saying he agrees that "we believe in free speech in the United States of America."

Arabs confident Obama will birth 'Palestine'

A senior Palestinian Authority official on Thursday said the regime of US-backed Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is pulling for Democratic candidate Barack Obama to win the upcoming US presidential election.

PA Planning Minister Samir Abdullah told reporters on a visit to Tokyo that the assumption in Ramallah is that Obama will win the election, and once inaugurated will immediately set in motion the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian Arab state on the biblical Jewish lands of Judea and Samaria.

"[Obama] promised that he will not wait until the end of his term to launch negotiations and he will make it happen from day one," said Abdullah, referring to current US President George W. Bush's unfulfilled promise to oversee the birth of "Palestine" during his time in office.

re: #88 paint-right
Yeah, I'm NOT dissing Obama's ability to rouse the crowd, so to speak, when he's speaking from a prepared text, at least, but more that Hillary started out as far more "centrist" in her positions than did Obama and that's a no-no if you want the Dem Nomination, because all of the real "activists" and "youth votes" in the Party are left-wing loonies.
I don't recall, for example, that Hillary said anything close to what Obama said (in the primaries) about pulling out of Iraq.
Now Obama realizes that he has to move out of that immediate withdrawal position to win the actual election, which, as John Kerry showed us, isn't decided by voters from the extreme left wing of the Dem Party.
Mind you, I'm not now, nor have I ever been, a supporter of Hillary, just pointing out that she presumed she'd be the nominee and started out trying to have a broader appeal than did Obama.
And that Obama is getting dissed by the very folks who helped him get the nomination (probably) is just time to make more popcorn!
Hell, if y'all remember, Charles even had a thread on how Markos Zunigas Kos was tossing Obama under the bus! And if Kos turns on you, ultimately so will the extreme wing of the Dem party and without THEM Obama has no chance of winning the general election!

The cover of this week's "Rolling Stone" is enough to make you puke. It is a massive, air-brushed face shot of the B-Ho, with a too-prominent flag pin. To emphasize their worship of the messiah, the editors stripped all the normal wording from the cover. You can see it on the RS website, but if you real want to hurl your Fourth of July hot dog, you have to see it at your local newsstand. Unfortunately for me, with people in the music business, we have to subscribe to the rag. It sat on the kitchen counter until I put some gloves on and threw it out last night.

I am no fan of Hellory (indeed I regard her as having some evidence of being a psychopath) but somehow, I suspect that she would be the nominee. While it is always reasonable to change one's outlook and proposals on how to deal with things when the facts change (such as 9/11), this guy just does change on the fly. For the edification of the left, this situation is similar to the Swiftboat condition; just as Kerry did not provide the documents to refute the charges, Obama is not providing the document (his birth certificate) to refute the doubt about his citizenship. So, why is he not countering the charges/doubt/questions? It is an easy matter to resolve. Are the complications to his campaign that dire? Inquiring minds what to know.

While it is always reasonable to change one's outlook and proposals on how to deal with things when the facts change (such as 9/11)

By that you mean the way many changed after 9/11 from being unwilling to use force against those that threaten us to accepting that, at least in a limited way, sometimes force is necessary? Am i taking the right thing from that remark?

180 Pshawalaw  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 1:54:27pm

I guess you are gone. I think I read you right, though.

And, that reminds me of something Glenn Beck said the other day about that "time when we all united". That was a fleeting time wasn't it. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 we all joined together, and yet many of us suspected that the left would abandon the cause at the first opportunity. And then we invaded Iraq. And, in spite of bipartisan domestic legislative support and near unanimous world agreement that Saddam must be overthrown, the left went looking for every excuse to break away from the pack and found it when the WMD that everyone was expecting to be there could not be found. But, no WMD is not their real complaint, that is just their rationale, their real complaint is with their being united with the right.

B. Hussein Obama is evil and must be defeated in the election!

There ARE 57...islamic...states, BTW.

now i get it Obama's idea of CHANGE is that he changes his points from one week to the next.

At least until he finds the "Change We Can Believe In".

To them agreeing with anything the right of Joe Lieberman (or Joe) is like sleeping with a pig...it felt good at the time but now they shudder in revulsion at actually finding common cause against a threat to us all. Past the heat of the moment they'd rather die then admit agreeance with anything other than their particular party line.

At least Helms was never a KKK Grand Klaxon, or whatever they call the head bigot in that organization, like Byrd was.

Yes, yes, he's a pretty face with a glib turn of phrase.
But that's not enough.
These are perilous times.
We need a serious leader.
Not a frickin' prom queen.

193 Dotcoman  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 3:18:27pm

Boy it sure is a good thing that the libtards and Kos Kiddies, have a fall back guy in John McCain to vote for, when Obama dis's and pisses them off, before throwing them under his big bus too.

Remember you Kos lurkers, John McCain only throws Christians and Conservatives under his bus. If you ask real nice, I'll bet he'll even let you sit up front in the grown up seats and maybe even sit in his lap, and steer the bus. Wouldn't that be fun, Kidz?

re: #192 yenta-fada

Wherever 'Obooma' goes, the truth commits suicide.

Then John McCain shows up to stab it in the back, you know, just to make sure. Just like he did to all the POW/ MIA's being held as captive bargaining chips by the NVC, back in 1992.

I have to repost this because it satirically shows Obama's flip-flops.

[Obama guest blogs at Iowahawk]

My Fellow Americans:

Let me be crystal clear: if elected president, my first act will be to call for the immediate withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq. I have always been consistent and forthright in this position, and I want to reassure my supporters that my recent statement backtracking from it was just some bullsh*t my staff came up with to tack to the center for the general election… just look at all of the comsymps and pinkos I've thrown under the bus in the last 6 weeks - Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, Samantha Power, Jim Johnson, the list goes on. And you know what? I enjoyed it.

Or will I? As is obvious to all but the most deluded HuffPo retard, the surge in Iraq has produced dramatic improvements in security throughout Iraq, and the roots of a stable pro-American democracy. We have the terrorists on the run, and it would obviously be crazy for us to pull our troops from the region just as we are on the verge of victory.

everything I said in the previous paragraph was designed to placate the naive hipster moonbats I brilliantly exploited to destroy the Clintons. (You're welcome.) Now that the nomination is in the bag, I am finally free to stake out my genuine pro-victory Iraq position, and have a good laugh while the dKos morons screech like a bunch of apoplectic howler monkeys

See what I mean? That previous paragraph should be a signal to all of you in the progressive community just how committed I am to an immediate troop withdrawal.

A Message to American Voters By Senator Barack Obama D-IL

What is worrisome is that the Lefties will vote for him anyway because they are filled with Bush hatred.re: #6 paint-right

Obama is make me feel plusungood.

Make that doubleplusungood and I'll have one, too, Barkeep.

If Obama has lost Kos and the NYT, what's left? Switching to the GOP?

Maybe they'll turn out like Chelsea working for a hedge fund. So much for public service.

Chelsea actually has a lot going for her. She's young, attractive, has a very good job, and all of her family's skeletons are out in the open.

What's not to like?

re: #72 Macker

What state would he win addition to DC? Illinois? Then hopefully afterward, the Illinois voters will vote his ass out.

He might win Vermont. I don't think he'd follow McGovern and win MA, because his surrogate is governor there and they're sick of him.

At least Helms was never a KKK Grand Klaxon, or whatever they call the head bigot in that organization, like Byrd was.

Byrd was a Kleagle He wasn't the head bigot, but he helped bring new bigots into the fold.

AFAIK the only thing Helms wanted to give the Klan was a dose from old Dr. Twelve-Gauge.

202 profitsbeard  Fri, Jul 4, 2008 8:00:00pm

Barry's slogan is: " Change we can believe in."

I don't believe I've ever seen a guy change his positions as much as he does: Obama- The Transformer Candidate.

Turning from a marxist-leftist pacifist into a center right neo-warmonger in one magical pirouette.

Everyone knows he's lying (ala B.J. Clinton) but it's so transparent and so fascinating to watch, they'll vote just for the entertainment value of his fancyfooted machiavellian tapdancing.

203 ding  Sat, Jul 5, 2008 8:41:40am

So what's new here? They all go to the middle at some point: Right or left. McCain doesn't have to so much 'cause he's already there.

It's all so transparent. the Left is well aware of what he is doing. Winning an election. The end justifies the means and all that.

Problem is, their new age of hope and change is starting out just like any other campaign. I hope they haven't set there sights too high. Dudes a player.
