after using knife and fork .. a cannibal works his way up the food chain to Democrat.

That way he can eat his own kind .. and justify it too.

Iran warns of Gulf blitzkrieg, Hormuz closure

The chief of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards militia, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, meanwhile, warned that his forces would use "blitzkrieg tactics" in the Gulf if his country came under attack.

"The Guards are equipped with the most advanced missiles that can strike the enemies' vessels and naval equipment with fatal blows," Fars quoted the Guards chief as saying.

In case of attack, "blitzkrieg tactics and operations of the Guards' boats will not leave a chance for the enemies to run away."

Famous last words. Last time, we sank their entire navy in less than a day.

I was expecting more for an ending, though to be honest, I hate the tidy neat little bow or obvious plug for a sequel endings. I hate when the movie includes a "here is why and how everything happened" scene for no reason other than to spoon feed how clever the filmmakers were to the audience. This movie avoided both of those.

Iranian Blockade 'An Act of War'

Any Iranian move to blockade the Strait of Hormuz would be considered as an "act of war", a top US military official said yesterday.

Iran would "not be allowed" to take control of the key oil route and an attempt to do so would provoke a "vigorous" international response, said outgoing Fifth Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Kevin Cosgriff.

He was responding to Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander General Mohammed Ali Jafari's warning on Saturday that Iran would choke off the strait if the country was attacked.

A quarter of the world's oil supplies pass through the narrow stretch, between the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf.

"I cannot imagine, given the critical nature of that body of water, that the international community would not be outraged should Iran or any entity move to restrict the freedom of navigation," Vice-Adm Cosgriff told a Press conference at the US navy base in Juffair.

"They are not going to be allowed to do so. It would be an act of war. "In a tight oil market, the international community would respond vigorously to that." He would not specify what action the US would take.

If you don't slacken up your pace,
They're gonna throw food in your face--
Girl, you let a knife and fork dig your grave.

Girl, you let a knife and fork get you down.
If you keep this up, little girl,
You won't be 'round.
If you don't change some of your ways,
Girl, you're gonna shorten all your days--
Girl, you let a knife and fork get you down.

Eat, eat, eat, that's your middle name.
Oh, the way you stuff yourself, it's a doggone shame.
[Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah]

Girl, you let a knife and fork call your hand.
You gobble all the food inside
That you can.
If you don't change some of your ways,
They're gonna shorten all your days.
Girl, you let a knife and fork call your hand.

Wearin' a size 44,
You have to turn sideways to get thru the door,
Girl, you let a knife and fork dig your grave.
Girl, you let a knife and fork dig your grave.

I doubt it, too... those ships have ELEGANT, OVERLAPPING DEFENSES, 24/7... and the bright young Americans running their stations at radar and other ELINT/COMINT posts are AMERICANS... intelligent, motivated and life-loving...

The Iranians with access to weapons are fear-motivated, kept ignorant, denied access to sources of information, and haven't been allowed to know of the coming of The Bab (al-Qaim) and Baha'u'llah (The Glory of God, al-Mahdi) to their own nation, May 22, 1844/1260 AH...

That is SOME iggorance... so I, too, doubt they'd get enough ships to make a difference, before being met with overwhelming, expertly aimed and competently delivered FORCE, Horse!

Even Iranian mines could be countered relatively quickly, because of the basing of two Osprey-class coastal minesweepers in Bahrain. Additional minesweeping craft would have to come from the United States, but this is much more capability than was present in the late 1980s. In a naval-air confrontation, one carrier battle group of the United States has a huge advantage against the Iranian military.

Seasonal Factor Seen in Melting and Ice Shifts in Greenland

a Dutch study using 17 years of satellite measurements in western Greenland suggests that the movement associated with the meltwater is not as rapid as had been feared. The acceleration appears to be a transient summer phenomenon, the researchers said, with the yearly movement actually dropping slightly in some places.

I liked it. Not overbulky. Accurate out to 800-1000 meter, but still usable for close quarter, room or trench clearing. The one thing I did not like was the sling set up, which shifted its center of gravity to the left if you slung it cross body. A little 550 cord solved that though.

Speaking of cannibalism (early in this thread), or back-stabbing (NYT threads), or revealing facts even when asked not to (see last line of AP article), MSNBC does an NYT on the AP (first noticed at Ace of Spades):

Secret U.S. mission hauls uranium from Iraq
Last major stockpile from Saddam's nuclear efforts arrives in Canada

As per Ambassador Joe, this stuff, all 600 (US) tons, does not exist, even though the AP says it does.

It looks like the MSM is starting to come clean, or, more likely, that writers, reporters and editors are starting to crack and pad/correct their resumes, in response to downsizing at various newspapers.

Seasonal Factor Seen in Melting and Ice Shifts in Greenland

It seems the NYT has discovered Arctic warming is seasonal.

Ummm... no, I believe that is not what the research is saying.

The original paper is here. The abstract:

Large and Rapid Melt-Induced Velocity Changes in the Ablation Zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet

Continuous Global Positioning System observations reveal rapid and large ice velocity fluctuations in the western ablation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Within days, ice velocity reacts to increased meltwater production and increases by a factor of 4. Such a response is much stronger and much faster than previously reported. Over a longer period of 17 years, annual ice velocities have decreased slightly, which suggests that the englacial hydraulic system adjusts constantly to the variable meltwater input, which results in a more or less constant ice flux over the years. The positive-feedback mechanism between melt rate and ice velocity appears to be a seasonal process that may have only a limited effect on the response of the ice sheet to climate warming over the next decades.

[My emphasis]

As Andy Revkin pointed out, it is the acceleration (due to the positive feedback) that is happening seasonally. Point being, if the positive feedback (of the melt-water seeping through the ice) occurred continually all year (12 months instead of seasonally) the melting of the Greenland ice sheet would happen much more quickly. Which is of course a good thing.... for if the ice sheet were to melt substantially over just a few decades it would be difficult (impossible?) for us to adapt successfully...

I think the best handgun for home protection is a .357 Magnum. You can get lighter ammo that will stop an intruder and also not travel through your walls to the neighbor's house. Its also simply loaded, simply emptied and simply aimed.

A good .357 revolver is a handy thing to have.

For carry I prefer a 9mm auto. I plan on using a Glock 26 with a Commonoli safety installed (have the 26, haven't put the safety on it yet).

A while back I read a long series of articles written by a guy who had lived through a real "SHTF" scenario following the collapse of the Argentinean economy, and his conclusion was to carry the highest-cap 9mm you could conceal.

re: #246 RTLM

I think the best handgun for home protection is a .357 Magnum. You can get lighter ammo that will stop an intruder and also not travel through your walls to the neighbor's house. Its also simply loaded, simply emptied and simply aimed.

Easy to wield for everyone.

Home protection? Shotgun.

re: #251 Pawn of the Oppressor

A good .357 revolver is a handy thing to have.

For carry I prefer a 9mm auto. I plan on using a Glock 26 with a Commonoli safety installed (have the 26, haven't put the safety on it yet).

A while back I read a long series of articles written by a guy who had lived through a real "SHTF" scenario following the collapse of the Argentinean economy, and his conclusion was to carry the highest-cap 9mm you could conceal.

well, my worst case scenario is that i'm @ w*rk in one part of LA when the "big one" hits, and i have to part the seas, as it were, to get home.....

i'm thinking a deuce & a half, with a full squad, and 4 or 5 basic loads of ammo *might* get me home in one piece. 45 vs 9? 6-5 and pickem..... one has better power, but what if you miss? you have fewer reloads.....

i'd love to get a Kimber, but that's serious $. until then, i'll have to rely on my 1930's Colt, but since CA says i can't carry anyway.......
dry chemical fire extinguishers are your friend. %-)

By Biblical chronology and a certain interpretation of what makes somebody Jewish (i.e. "Walking with G-d", as it is said of Noah), there were Jews right from the beginning... At least, if I am reading my Tanakh right. I think this is correct? I mean no offense, just trying to understand.

I was speaking earlier of the conventional outsider's interpretation of "Jewish" meaning, of Exodus, post-Sinai, following the Laws given there, etc.

I've never been sold on the slide-racking thing as a tactic. For one thing, it assumes you have time to react and that the aggressor has lost the element of surprise, which is not the way you should be planning for a criminal emergency. In my way of thinking, the first warning a criminal attacker will have is when he finds himself looking down the pipe of my defensive firearm. And at that point, if he doesn't quit what he's doing, it's too late for all parties involved anyway.

tru dat........ which is why HRH has dry cycled the weapon many times, as well as using it at the range. a decent weapon, properly employed by a well trained user is better than the "perfect" weapon used improperly.

hence my (free) advice to you .............. bottom line is to stick with what w*rks for you, and ignore all the experts..... there is *no* substitute for good training & lots of practice. when the shit hits the fan, it's unlikely you will rise to some new level, but it's given that you will default to your lowest level of current training. it's always better to sweat than to bleed.

We have a shotgun. But they are cumbersome, heavy and long for a midnight panic grab. Difficult to place in spots of high vulnerability (bed side). Small children double the difficulty.

A sturdy, locked night stand with a weapon that myself or the Mrs. can access with speed and effectivity is far and away the better solution.

re: #328 jcobble

Earlier this evening, around 7 pm Pacific there was a story on Fox's web page about a clandestine mission to remove something like 97 tons of yellow cake from Iraq. Now it is gone and I find it no where else. Odd...

Report: Uranium Stockpile Removed From Iraq in Secret U.S. Mission

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

What is now left is the final and complicated push to clean up the remaining radioactive debris at the former Tuwaitha nuclear complex about 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Baghdad — using teams that include Iraqi experts recently trained in the Chernobyl fallout zone in Ukraine.

Despite recent gains, daily attacks continue throughout Iraq. Gunmen attacked a police patrol Saturday near Mosul, 225 miles northwest of Baghdad, killing one policeman, police said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

I only append this because I recognize that there is little ANY national government can do against individual, committed terrorist attacks, but the Americans and Iraqis together have won against the militias and extremist thugs, and I applaud that!

Happened to my reserve unit one time. Big exercise the whole London Militia District (all units from service to infantry) did a long weekend exercise which happened to be Thanksgiving weekend. The weather was perfect training weather, with all the nastiness that entails. We were sharing one ration pack per squad per meal if we were lucky. Rumours got around that a sargeant complained and an orficer said, "F*ck them, they'll get turkey on Monday when they get home". Well needless to say we were seething. But that doesn't end the story there. One of our buds was sidelined and was working the command post, where there where crates of rations stacking up. He was told those were the extras. When he got on the bus and found the rest of us cold, surly, hungry, and ready to kill, he wisely kept his mouth shut. Actually he kept it shut for almost two years. That's how pissed we were.

re: #410 BlueCanuck

That's how pissed we were.

the essential requirements for anything to be considered "good training" are as follows:
you have to be cold, wet, tired, hungry, pissed off and doing something stupid.

("hot & sweaty" can be substituted for "cold & wet". %-)

My understanding of the difference between the RSAF and the IAF is not that we have given better technology to the Israelis than we have given to the Saudis or the Egyptians but that the Israelis have improved on our tech while SA and Egypt have let our technology rot. Hmmm, lets factor into this that the population of the world has increased by a couple of billion. Most of the population lives in areas that are prone to water damage or other such instances. Most storms haven't increased in scale or damage, but with more people living in harms way it's inevitable that more would die. Bias, moonbatism, and pushing the GW meme.

re: #504 BlueCanuck

Indeed. Reality check:

The average annual percentage of the global population killed by natural disasters decreased 10-fold from the period 1964 to 1968 compared with the period 2000 through 2004, from 0.01 percent (roughly one killed for every 10,000 people) to 0.001 percent (one in 100,000) respectively. At the same time, the average annual number of recorded disasters increased five-fold between 1964 through 1968 (64 per year) and 2000 through 2004 (332 per year). The events that continue to result in the major number of fatalities are the relatively small percentage of events that occur with large recurrence intervals, such as massive floods, strong earthquakes and direct strikes from intense hurricanes, or events that are unusual in the area in which they occur.

Mornin' all. It is just after 6 here in the beautiful Cascades. We have had 2 visitors causing quite an uproar here. There are 2 moose in town. We are not in the mooses(?) normal range. They hang out to the north in Okanogan county and up north of Spokane. We are in a very arid area, so this has been fairly entertaining. One of them on Thursday caused a traffic jam by being in the middle of the cloverleaf on the south end bridge in Wenatchee. Friday, one was up by the fire station in East Wenatchee.

Hey yochanan - I remember about four years ago when they discovered coyotes in Central Park - right smack dab in the middle of Manhattan, NYC.

Actually had Friday off (nice rest) and it felt good to lurk on LGF on and off all day.

Normally work office on Saturdays; but instead, we threw a great party for the residents poolside with us doing the bar-b-queing. Games, food, prizes and a short concert by a local group doing cool hip-hop songs for the kids (stuff like...say no to drugs, be cool/stay in school, success is best with studying and schooling, etc.).

We served over 250 adults and kids. Boy I'm tired today, but it was worth it and fun.

We did an essay contest for the kids. There is one essay this little 10-year-old girl did and brought it to me for entry. I cried my eyes out. I'll make a copy of it and send it to you.

In one of the industrial areas of our city there's a small green space that houses a family of deer. I was driving to a site to check on a security guard and saw about four of them on the road. The guard told me that they had been there for years. We actually watched them walk by his post while we were talking. Also by one of the subway stops there used to be a fox den and you would see them running around in the early morning.

The poll -- conducted by Opinion Research for CNN and released Friday -- found that only 54 percent of those surveyed said they would not vote for Obama for president. Among registered Democrats, 43 percent said that they would prefer Clinton to be the party's nominee.

My folks used to live in Daytona Beach and one winter weekend I was down visiting them and Mom shireked - came running and and said there was A HUGE GREEN SNAKE in the master bath room, so Dad and I flipped for it, I lost and went in to see the last FOUR FEET of the snake disappearing into a tiny hole in their bathroom ceiling.
Called Pest Control the next day, they found an 8 foot long, really fat green snake and told us we shouldn't have been worried it was a somethingorother snake I never heard of.
Fuck that - damn snake was longer than I am tall and bigger around than my biceps!
We spent the last two nights that I was down there at a motel! LOL!

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that NYC is picking up the tab for the funeral expenses of the woman who was seen on that video dying in the waiting room of a NYC owned hospital. Curiously, the City had a real estate developer pick up the tab for flying the woman's relatives in from Jamaica.

The hospital is one of 11 owned by the city, and yet it is responsible for 1/3 of all malpractice suits. Something is systemically wrong with that hospital, and criminal charges are still being mulled. I'd say that they're more than warranted.

And the victim's family should expect a multimillion dollar settlement/verdict based on the facts and circumstances, though it will do little to bring their loved one back.

It's a truly horrific situation.

Meanwhile, half a world away, another horrific situation continues to unfold as Palestinian terrorists continue their deadly ways and trying to kill Israelis during the cease.fire!

ANKARA (Reuters) - Two former Turkish generals were arrested on Sunday on charges of forming and leading a terrorist group and seeking to overthrow the Islamist leaning government, the state Anatolian news agency said.

A court ordered the arrest of Sener Eruygur, once head of the paramilitary gendarmerie, and Hursit Tolon, the former first army commander. They were sent to a prison in Istanbul.

SNIP

Media reports said a secret plan was seized during the swoop which called for illegal protests on July 7 across 40 provinces, assassinations and attacks on security forces.

Media said the two former generals were suspected of being members of a shadowy, ultra-nationalist secularist group known as Ergenekon, which was already under investigation.

Yeah, but only to get away from what Chicagoans call "pizza"! LOL!
Actually my favorite slogan for a Deli was on a Kosher NYC Deli where we had a couple of LGF Meet-ups: "We cure our own corned beef; our Chicken Soup cures everything else!". GREAT FOOD TOO and, of course, PLENTY of it!

I never considered deep dish as real Chicago pizza. I think that it is actually a crisp thin crust with toppings cut into squares, that is Chicago pizza.
I know a lot of people prefer New York pizza.
I think, that if it is cut into a triangle & you fold it to eat it, you really have a sandwich.

OMG, that's SO funny!

My brother and his wife live in Jacksonville, and they had a rat in their house. They had the exterminiator in, but it was still freaking my s-i-l out.

My brother was away on business, and SIL was asleep. She heard rustling under the bed and thought it was the rat. She leaped out of bed (oh, for a video of that!) and grabbed a broom. Heart pounding, she swiped it under the bed. It wasn't a rat; it was a "palmetto bub," about the SIZE of a rat, but she was able to dispatch it.

She said it was the first and only time in her life she was happy to see one.

Great story yes. A mongoose fares well against a slow striking cobra, but would be bitten and probably eaten by rattlesnake or other

First advertised size and actual size is too different things. Second the system uses a portion for maintaining the files structure.

Decimal vs. Binary:

For simplicity and consistency, hard drive manufacturers define a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes and a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes. This is a decimal (base 10) measurement and is the industry standard. However, certain system BIOSs, FDISK and Windows define a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes and a gigabyte as 1,073,741,824 bytes. Mac systems also use these values. These are binary (base 2) measurements.

To Determine Decimal Capacity:
A decimal capacity is determined by dividing the total number of bytes, by the number of bytes per gigabyte (1,000,000,000 using base 10).

To Determine Binary Capacity:
A binary capacity is determined by dividing the total number of bytes, by the number of bytes per gigabyte (1,073,741,824 using base 2).

Various Drive Sizes and their Binary and Decimal Capacities

Drive Size in GB Approximate Total Bytes Decimal Capacity
(bytes/1,000,000,000)
Approximate Binary Capacity (bytes/1,073,724,841)
10 GB 10,000,000,000 10 GB 9.31 GB
20 GB 20,000,000,000 20 GB 18.63 GB
30 GB 30,000,000,000 30 GB 27.94 GB
36 GB 36,000,000,000 36 GB 33.53 GB
40 GB 40,000,000,000 40 GB 37.25 GB
60 GB 60,000,000,000 60 GB 55.88 GB

Israel successfully tests missile interceptor:

Israel has successfully tested a new defence system designed to intercept rockets fired from southern Lebanon and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, public radio reported on Sunday.
The "Iron Dome" system is expected to be fully operational within a year and will be able to intercept the military-grade Katyusha rockets used by Lebanon's Hezbollah militia and the cruder Qassam rockets favoured by Hamas.

Hopefully the intercept occurs over Gaza, all the shit falls back on the owners heads.

An undercover inquiry by The Sunday Times has revealed that wild monkeys, which are banned from experiments in Britain, are being freely supplied in large numbers to laboratories in other parts of the world. All will undergo invasive and maybe painful experiments leading ultimately to their death.

One Tanzanian dealer, Nazir Manji, who runs African Primates, an animal-supplying company based in Dar es Salaam, said that in recent years he had been selling up to 4,000 vervet monkeys a year to laboratories, charging about £60 each.

Clipper development did start with the Baltimore Clipper schooner rigs. The key refinement was the hull shape, sharp bow with sweeping lines at the water line and below.

Yes. And there are probably Baltimore clippers around. I'm referring to the full-rigged ships, like Cutty Sark and City of Adelaide.

Yes, indeed. And that's the pity of it, you won't. With the sole exception of Cutty Sark, no one gave a damn.

The Thermopylae, a contemporary of Cutty Sark in the tea trade, was sold to the Portuguese Navy as a training ship and renamed Pedro Nunes, after a 16th century Portuguese mathematician and geographer. She was eventually converted to a coal hulk, and finally sunk off Lisbon by gunfire as target practice in 1907. Several years ago, divers found her wreckage 30 meters down, nearly covered with sand but readily identifiable.

Coast Guard's training ship (full-rigged) is named Eagle.

The Constitution is in sailing condition now (somewhat -- into the harbor and back). I think they're sailing here out once a year now, on the Fourth.

Yes, apparently you're not supposed to prairie dog when the liquid touches your lips!

Once while on a tiger cruise I made the egregious mistake of cleaning the coffee pot before making a new pot.... Shorty thereafter I was given my first introduction to a bilge................And given a teaspoon and a pail with which to clean said bilge...

A friend accidentally got a the USS Constitution for the annual turn around cruise. He was at a convention in Boston and walked down to see her at lunch. As he walks one of the sailors asks, "you coming" and he shrugs and goes on board. The pulled the gang way in after him.

While he is wondering WTF is going on, a woman comes up to him and gushes , "isn't it wonderful! I've been waiting 7 years for this!" Apparently the turn around cruise tickets are applied for and won on a lottery system, at least when this happened.

He missed his afternoon session at the convention.

VERY nice.

This is across the street from the harbor where the Friendship is docked

It is where the narrator of The Scarlet Letter spends his days.
