Barbara and the Chinless Ophthalmologist

Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 8:39:52 am PDT

Bashar Assad must really love mush-headed Western mediabots like Barbara Walters: Barbara Walters: Syrian Dictator ‘Charming,’ ‘Intelligent’.

While most Americans celebrated Independence Day with fireworks and barbeques, Barbara Walters spent the occasion dining with Syrian leader Bashir al-Assad, whom Walters described as “intelligent” and “charming” who wants “very much to have good relations with us.” Perhaps realizing her own gushiness about Assad Walters pre-empted accusations and denied she is “brainwashed.”

I think brainwashing requires a brain, so I believe her on that one.

Is she using the "royal 'we'" in this sentence?

In her case, I wouldn't call it brainwashing. More like a light rinse.

Problem is, Bahbwah, that many thugs are capable of being charming- especially around cameras and media people.

The veteran journalist began by noting Syria remains on the State Departments terrorism list because "they are against the war in Iraq."

If that's the case, why haven't we put France on the State Department terrorism list?

re: #13 rabidsquirrel

Syria is on the State Department's list because they are a terror-sponsoring regime, providing aid and support to Hamas and Hizbullah.

It has nothing to do with their opposition to the war in Iraq. The Syrian opposition to the war in Iraq has everything to do with terrorism though - having the US next door makes their ability to carry out longer range plans against the US interests more difficult.

42 D. Lapin  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 8:53:05am

Sharmuta got it absolutely correct. Walters is too stupid to realize that the halo that she imagines above her head doesn't cast a magical "you will tell the truth" beam on her interviewees.

46 researchok  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 8:55:03am

Walter can add the world 'tool' to her resume.

She should have asked why the term 'We'll finish what Hitler started' has managed to find it's way into Syrian media and literature.

She should have asked why Alois Brunner, right hand man to Adolph Eichmann (who has said in interviews he was 'proud' of his efforts to exterminate Jews) was able to find a home in Syria and join the state security apparatus- and she should have asked why Syria has refused to extradite him to Germany.

Walters is a lightweight.

Intelligent? He's got an O.D., so he must have some basic level of intelligence.

Charming? Never met him, but probably he spent enough time in Paris that he knows how to kiss a lady's hand.

Wants good relations with us? Of course he does. Now, his definition of good relations may be a little screwy, involving as it does the US sending an invasion force into Israel to wrest the Golan Heights back into Syrian control... but even a chinless dictator can have big dreams, right?

51 rabidsquirrel  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 8:58:12am
Look, there are still things, it is considered a dictatorship, we still do not know what they’re relationship is with Iran, there are other problems I’m not saying that this is, you know the perfect place. What I am saying is we need to know more about it and more about its leaders and have more conversation.

What's this "we" crap? I know what their relationship is with Iran. The whole of LGF knows. The current administration knows. Who the hell - aside from Barbara - doesn't know?

Odds are, Mr. Assad is indeed intelligent. He may even be charming, when it's advantageous. It helps to have tons of gold and fawning servants everywhere when you want to impress.

This habit of denigrating even the strengths that make evildoers capable of evil is a mistake. Contempt breeds complacency. Some of our enemies have the stern virtues that make their intentions more than mere pipe dreams. Others have the wit to concoct shit we'd never expect.

But of course that's not what Ms. Walters meant. She meant that anybody who has anything good about them must be partly good. Nonsense.

re: #118 Lucius Septimius

The reason we didn't in 1967 or in 1973 is easy. The Soviet Union threatened to intervene on behalf of the Arabs directly (even more overtly than their direct assistance to the Arab regimes hellbent on Israel's destruction). And the US sought to contain the conflict and hoped to avoid a more direct confrontation with the Soviets.

Obama's lack of understanding exposed again

Dean Barnett noticed a stunning level of ignorance by Barack Obama about the command structure he seeks to head as commander-in-chief and blogged about it at The Weekly Standard.

When Obama held his second press conference late last week to address his ever more slippery position on withdrawing troops from Iraq, he stated:

"I am absolutely committed to ending the war," the longtime community organizer declared. "I will call my Joint Chiefs of Staff in and give them a new assignment and that is to end the war."

Not only does he not understand the command structure, he said "my Joint Chiefs of Staff"... they are "the Joint Chiefs of Staff"... it's All About Obama!

Border control assault suspect arrested

DERBY LINE, Vt. – The U.S. Border Patrol says a man suspected of assaulting one of its agents near the Vermont-Quebec border is in custody in Canada.

The Border Patrol says the agent fired shots Monday after being assaulted in Derby Line, Vt..

No injuries were reported and the Border Patrol initially said three suspects were involved in the assault. But on Tuesday it said a group of four people were involved in the altercation, although only one man assaulted the agent.

Spokesman Mark Henry says two suspects were arrested in Derby Line and two were arrested by provincial police nearby in Stanstead, Que., and turned over to the RCMP.

RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Elaine Lavergne said Tuesday that the four suspects were illegal immigrants in Canada, but she could not disclose their nationalities.

My guess is they're Belgians. Yeah, Belgians.

Meanwhile, you've got a couple of nitwits who think that the Constitution's war powers aren't clear enough and think that Congress needs to intervene more than they already have.

I love this part:

A bipartisan group that we led, the National War Powers Commission, has unanimously concluded after a year of study that the law purporting to govern the decision to engage in war — the 1973 War Powers Resolution — should be replaced by a new law that would, except for emergencies, require the president and Congressional leaders to discuss the matter before going to war. Seventy years of polls show that most Americans expect Congress and the president to talk before making that decision, and in most cases, they have done so.

Strangely enough, I recall GWB talking to Congress. I also recall a certain vote in favor of allowing military action against a certain country.

176 Cartman  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 9:37:53am

U.S. agent fires at 3 in sleepy town on Quebec-Vermont border

The U.S. Border Patrol said one of its agent stopped three people - two men and a woman - trying to cross the border where Rock Island, Que., blends into Derby Line, Vt.

When the agent tried to question them, they refused to answer and then attacked him, punching him. The agent then pulled his gun and fired twice while they fled, the border patrol said.

Police later captured a man and a woman - one in Canada, the other in the United States. One man remained at large, possibly wounded, the CBC's Dan Halton reported.

U.S. authorities questioned the two suspects while police on both sides of the border continued to hunt for the second man.

The border patrol would not provide the suspects' nationalities.

I'm beginning to wonder if that's a code for telling people the nationality of the suspects is something we should really be interesting in?

I heard about this on the radio this morning; the immediate response was, "WTF?"

It's not as though Bush did not "consult with Congress" before going into Iraq as well as Afghanistan. And it's not as though Congress did not overwhelmingly vote to proceed in both instances.

Why does the law in this area need to be changed--and why does it need to be changed now? One has to wonder whether Baker is bringing this up in order to further undermine the waning days of the current Administration, or whether his hope is to roil the waters to make it even more difficult for the US to do anything about Iran....or about Baker's Saudi masters, and their crimping of the world oil supply.

The leaked Iran NIE, and Baker. They want to tie GWB's hands politically re. Iran. Pure and simple. So what if El Baridei says 6 months to a bomb, so what of the repeated intent of Iran is to use said bomb.

re: #38 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

wants "very much to have good relations with us.”

Most dictators want validation from greater powers

Kragar -

Beyond that, the ASSAD Regime has one other problem - most of their hierarchy is Alawite, a minority group within the country. Without the dictatorship they might well be "dispossessed" as well as "deposed."

Four Behind Bars for Border Incident

A man suspected of assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol agent is in custody.

There are now four people behind bars in connection with the incident early Monday morning near the U.S.-Canada border in Derby Line.

It was originally believed three people were involved. But today, the agency said four people were involved and are now in custody.

The Border Patrol says the suspects were trying to sneak into the U.S., when one of them attacked an agent. The agent then fired his weapon. No injuries were reported.

Authorities say two of the suspects were arrested in Derby Line, and the other two were arrested nearby in Stanstead, Quebec. Authorities say the three initial suspects were illegal aliens from Canada. There is no word on the nationality of the fourth.

Hmmm... a solid blackout on their names & nationalities. Must be Belgians, I'm sure.

ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.

Gilda does it here

Thanks! I saw that earlier but once I saw Walters, I turned it off. I didn't know Gilda would do it.

Assad has probably read Walters's autobiography, and so knows a little about the "good relations" she thinks should be established.

Good luck to both of them.

Stunned, amazed and appalled at your blanket statement.

Sorry, but my frustration level is very high on that. Eventually, I am sure it will pass, but for now, I guess I will struggle with it. I get angry that Hillary, Pelosi, and a host of other women get a pass by the media on their "competence" where a man would not. And watching how men are treated by ads and on tv as complete and utter fools or boobs gets really, really, really old.

That's exactly what I was wondering. It's more likely she had one with his father. It ticks me off that she revealed her affair with Edward Brooke, since the guy and his wife are both still alive. Barbara, you ignorant slut.

I just have to note that The View is the biggest blight, stain, and blemish for female accomplishment and equality.

And so are the other 99.9% of all "female oriented shows". They're all bullshit and I find them personally very fucking insulting.

I guess you don't recall the gush piece she did for Fidel.

She's a fluff interviewer who asks "hard hitting" questions to celebrities like, "How did that make you feel?"

does that make her a fluffer for dictators?

Charles,
This is an unwarranted, non-scientific, assumption. Perhaps evolution took a different path in creating Barbara Walters.

Baba Wawa doesn't have a brain. She left it by the time she entered TV journalism.
