Kids and Happiness

Sociologists are discovering that children may not make parents happier and that childless adults, contrary to popular stereotypes, may often be more contented than people with kids.

Parents "definitely experienced more depression," says Robin Simon, a sociologist at Florida State University who has studied data on parenting.

"Part of our cultural beliefs is that we derive all this joy from kids," says Simon. "It's really hard for people who don't feel this to admit it." Social pressures to view only the positive aspects of child rearing only make the problem worse, she says. "They're afraid to admit it because it runs so counter to our cultural beliefs that children make you happy."

I could have told you that.

93 Dahveed  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 3:34:15pm

So, I just got back from a trip to Chicago for the long weekend. I must say that I'm not sure I buy that there is this recession that the media wants to portray. The airport in Seattle the day I left for Chicago was packed. The flight was completely full. So, it's clear people are still traveling by plane. Granted it was 4th of July weekend, but the airfares are really not impacting traveling that much. I left early Monday morning. The airport was packed full of people. And these were generally people entering the airport as opposed to people switching planes. The bars and restaurants that I went by were completely full of people the entire weekend. I went with friends to a fair in Northern Illinois. The parking lot was full. From what I observed people were spending quite a bit of money. I saw a movie over the weekend and the theater was filled.

I will admit that what I saw was just a microcosm. And, I don't doubt that there may be more people than usual having difficulty. But I see people spending money in so many places that it makes me think that the media wants to report a recession. I'm not convinced that it reflects reality though.

A woman spotted what appeared to be a running shoe with a foot inside. Forensics did an investigation and discovered that the foot was that of a dog (not a human foot). (People are now wondering about this "hoaxer". What a sicko that person must be...Here's a link.).

People respond to the media. The media plays up an economic crises, then when asked if they are worried they say yes.

The media reporting of doom and gloom is predictable in an election cycle, an (R) is in the WH, to help the (D) win the economy is therefore bad.

Most excellent. They'll tell you where to go. You can hook up with guys who give private tours. Maybe a day tour into the mountains. A little more costly, but well worth it.

You can also get into a dig which is a blast (har har....). They let you keep some pottery pieces, too. Maybe you'll find the ark!

Tell me about it. Years ago I was staying with my cousin in Oakland. It was about 95 degrees. We were going to a game at Candlestick -- it was 60 degrees over there and dipped below 50 by the time the game ended (night game).

Great planes.

I lived in deep south Texas for 15 years. The Confederate Air Force was located there for a long time. They had every kind of WWII plane you can imagine. It's not unusual for these fighters to have been modified to include a second seat. Many times you can get the room by removing a fuel tank. ( I think that was common with the P-51 )

re: #158 jorline

This citation from Wikipedia really glosses the whole thing over.

In 2002 it changed its name to Commemorative Air Force after a vote of the membership. Many felt the name Confederate Air Force was confusing, did not accurately reflect the purpose of the organization, and was detrimental to fundraising efforts. [4] This name changed was deemed by some fans to be a move of political correctness. The reason for the name change as stated by the organization was "Because the word "Confederate" is offensive to some."[5]

I remember when the whole bruhaha was going on. It was really disgusting. Of course now some hippy college students are trying to make them take down the tributes to Confederate Soldiers around the Town Square in Denton, Texas.

re: #93 Dahveed

Well the planes are full because many of the airlines are downgrading their fleets, less planes and laying off workers. I do a great deal of travel for my bosses and my hubby and I try to get to CA each year from FL. Prices have about doubled in some markets. Used to pay $350 from FL to CA. We paid $600 this year. I could have gotten a cheaper flight, about $400, but with 2 stops... fahgettaboutit.

Also they're charging for checking luggage. American charges $15 for 1 suitcase, $25 for 2, EACH LEG. USair, first checked bag is free, second is $25. They also debating whether to charge for seats. Aisle seats, maybe $15, center seats $5 (I don't get that but ok....) Anyway, it can really add up.

On top of which, you have to deal with cranky, overworked, stressed out flight and gate attendants on packed planes.

We took Amtrak from Irvine to San Diego for $40 round trip. Was a great deal and lovely ride along the coast. Much cheaper than renting a car.

(I won't even ask about tailwinds ...)

My Honda Accords, over the past few years, have been remarkably insensitive to speed, and I can even do a fair amount of city driving without the mileage diving dramatically, so long as I drive with an egg on the accelerator pedal. Current car never had a tank vary more than about 27mpg to 29mpg, though I haven't run a full tank and the air conditioner at the same time.

OK, I was exaggerating a little with my .1, .2, .3 guesses, but I would not have guessed 6mpg, even for a boxy SUV. Well heck, I guess you got better mileage at 55 in your Highlander, than I can get in my Accord, go figure.

I lived in McAllen for almost 10 years (85-94). The Confederate Air Force was in Harlingen - correct? I thought they moved to somewhere still in Texas, like Amarillo or some such.

Yes, they were located in Harlingen, Dolphin and you may be right about the move to north Texas...I can't remember. A lot of their air shows were in Brownsville though...less air traffic I guess.

I live in McAllen from 89 to 04, my wife's family is there and we still visit often.

I was on the Southwest Airlines web site the other day and they had a banner that said "Bags Fly Free". If you don't mind flying coach, they are great to fly. I've always loved their attitude and never had a problem with them and their seat spacing is exactly what I need to not bump my knees on the seat in front. Every other airline, in coach, is too small, and I'm too cheap to pay for higher class service.

Good choices. My father fought the war in the Pacific from a B-17. He loved the Corsairs. Said they tore the living hell out of the Japanese. They were the source of Pacific air superiority. Until then the Zero owned the sky.

The F-4U Corsair was an excellent fighter but very un-forgiving for an un-experienced pilot. As I have learned after many hours of simulator time, the Corsair gave the pilot capabilities only a good pilot could use to an advantage against the Japanese Zero. Great plane and better pilots prevailed.

AP News Cameraman terrorist ordered held for 6 more months.
[Link: www.breitbart.com...]

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - An Associated Press television cameraman who was detained by U.S. and Iraqi forces in early June was ordered held for at least six more months Tuesday for "imperative reasons of security," the U.S. military said.
The decision came as a surprise to the AP, which had earlier been led to believe that the cameraman, Ahmed Nouri Raziak, was likely to be released because of lack of any evidence against him.

Raziak, 38, who has worked for AP Television News since 2003, was detained by U.S. and Iraqi soldiers at his home in Tikrit on June 4. He was transferred last month to the U.S. military's detention facility at Camp Cropper near Baghdad International Airport.

The AP has been in regular contact with U.S. military officials about his case. In notifying the AP that Raziak would continue to be held, the military provided no details about any allegations against him.

Well you gotta figure, with so many airlines in trouble. Delta is teetering or did they file bankruptcy? They're still flying, I know. Well, in the last installment of my story ([Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...] I told of the charter school that needed space in our church building, only to begin objecting to the "religious imagery" they found there once they set up shop.

Well, the offending imagery was painted over, but thankfully we didn't have to paint over the art in our children's church, despite a visit from the Minnesota Department of Education.

But then our children's pastor got an idea. Since we now had a freshly painted blank wall facing the school section of the building, why not do something useful like put up a mural highlighting moral virtues, in a "non-religious," nonsectarian way?

Some parents at the school were "very concerned" when they heard of this plan, but now that the mural has been constructed, I hardly see how they could object. It depicts a cheerful, multicultural group of children acting out character traits like "honesty," "sharing," etc.

The new mural is 100x better than the old one. Take a look! [Link: cvchurch.org...]

And we even won an award for it.

In the late 80's & early 90's, I was a member of an Atari ST users group. The majority of the members participated in a site called "Air Warrior". Air Warrior was a site that charged $6.95/hour for the members to engage in air combat with WWII aircraft with others from all over the country. Keep in mind that this was before the web and was only available on Genie. Air Warrior was so popular that our users group sponsered a convention in DC and attracted people from all over the country. GE, the corporation behind Genie, helped defray the costs. BTW, Clayton Walnum, a compatriot of Charles was a frequent visitor to our meetings.

To make a long story short, a part of our convention was a back-lot tour of the National Air & Space Museum where I had my picture took standing alongside a P-51D and a F-4U Corsair that actually saw combat in WWII. To complete the tour, we all had a picture taken standing alongside the Enola Gay that was in the process of being preserved. Great memories!

re: #242 natemannq

Christian Reconstruction:

Under such a system, the list of civil crimes which carried a death sentence would include homosexuality, adultery, incest, lying about one's virginity, bestiality, witchcraft, idolatry or apostasy, public blasphemy, false prophesying, kidnapping, rape, and bearing false witness in a capital case.

Slightly OT, but hey, it's an open thread.

France is showing signs of getting it.

Ingrid Betancourt's decision: liberty or death. And a French philosopher approves!

Sometimes, just sometimes, one must make an effort to read between the lines. If everyone here had to spell everything out to the lefties, these threads would reach historic proportions. I'm not pointing fingers, since that would be racist, but some posters, ie (natemannq), need to take a loonngg hard look in the mirror before they take issue with the content posted here, just sayin'.

Yeah- whiner. Anyways- have your friends and Creationist Ministries backed away from their friends-in-arms, the islamist creationists?

Truth is I'm a little disappointed they haven't responded. They're usually quick to do so..

That said, I don't think that discredits all of their arguments..

I'm a bigger fan of Craig Winn anyway, who absolutely understands Islam...

Yeah, check the scoreboard between islamo-facists and Christian extremists regarding the deaths in each others' wake.

I believe Islamo-facists are a much greater threat, which is the only point I was trying to make..

Overboard. I have never seen Sharmuta tread on anybody's faith. She is concerned, as many people are, about those zealots who want to sneakily insert their brand (not mine and maybe not even yours) of Christianity into public schools.

The thing is that ID being taught as science has entered the political realm now. It can end up being just as corrosive to the Great American Experiment as Radical Islam is now. Must we have a September 10th attitude to yet another growing danger?

I can't speak directly for Charles but I divine that he sees the two to be kindred spirits in what they want to achieve, the destruction of America

Ah, the most mis-quoted excerpt from Scripture..

Taken to an extreme, we don't have to judge anyone.. ie, murder is ok..

The message is to not judge souls. We are perfectly within our right to judge behaviors... Not doing so leads to chaos and anarchy..

I expected better from you on that one.. I believe Charles Barkley actually twisted Scripture in the same way..

Well, in your previous message to Sharmuta, you clearly did not "judge" any behavior, since there wasn't any, and you characterized your words as a "warning". Believing yourself to be looking into Sharmuta's soul, there, Natemanqq?

This has gotten silly.

You have twisted the words of others, and you've twisted your own words, and refuse responsibility for what you've clearly written, by quoting only portions of what you have said previously.

I think for our society to remain free, we must be wary of zealots of every stripe, who want to "convert" us all to their way. And I think that is the basic point that Sharmuta was making, and you don't seem to like it very much.
