Breaking: CAIR's Chairman Resigns

Tue, Jul 8, 2008 at 6:43:40 pm PDT

The words “deserting a sinking ship” come to mind, as the chairman of the Saudi-funded radical Islamic front group calling itself the Council on American Islamic Relations bails out, with a series of transparent excuses: Chairman of Council on American-Islamic Relations resigns.

Jacksonville resident Parvez Ahmed has resigned as chairman of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, saying he’s frustrated about the national organization’s failure to be more proactive and positive in its promotion of Muslim civil rights.

The nation’s most well-known Muslim advocacy group, which he has led as board chairman since 2005, also needs to be more inclusive of younger, less-religious Muslims and encourage regular turnover of leadership ranks to ensure an infusion of new ideas, he told the Times-Union on Monday, a day after resigning.

These and other goals have been agreed to in principle by the organization’s board and professional leadership, Ahmed said, but “an old guard mentality” among some of those leaders has kept elements of the strategic plan from being realized.

“And I got a little bit burned out pushing so hard” for the organization to be more open and transparent, he said.

The Washington, D.C.-based council declined to answer specific questions about Ahmed’s comments. Instead, it e-mailed a four-sentence statement thanking Ahmed, 44, for his contributions and acknowledging differences in vision.

“Ultimately, the majority of organizational stakeholders supported a vision for implementing change and growth that differed from that of Dr. Ahmed,” the statement said.

Two board members did not return phone calls seeking comment Monday.

An outspoken critic of the group said Ahmed did not capitalize on a golden opportunity to transform the organization.

The council was the only Muslim agency in the United States experiencing growth when Ahmed assumed its leadership, said Muqtedar Khan, director of Islamic Studies at the University of Delaware. But its continued foray into political and foreign-policy matters - such as seeking rights for foreign combatants held at Guantanamo Bay - has detracted from its mission of promoting Muslim-American rights, he said.

“He had an opportunity to take it to the next level and I think he failed,” Khan said.

Ahmed said one of his unrealized goals was to transform the council into an organization that doesn’t sound anti-American when it’s criticizing government policies.

That's the good news today.

But in a heads up to you, Charles, and to other lizards, let us not forget that the future of Al-Qaeda is young and pissed.

Watch a video of teenybopper Hamza Bin Laden reciting a poem of hatred, and read his words, which include:

"Accelerate the destruction of America, Britain, France and Denmark.

Oh God, reward the fighters hitting the infidels and defectors. Oh God, guide the youth of the Islamic nation and let them assist with the fighters’ plans."

Hard to be a jihadi here in north Florida eh Parvez?

Folks 'round here never dug the fact that we had a jihadi in our midst. Ahmed is a professor at UNF, and he took a lot of local heat (little reported) for his organization's views. Looks like he did a cost-benefit analysis and CAIR came out on the short end of the stick.

Maybe we are making a difference.

How can you be more inclusive of less-religious Muslims when they're considered infidels as much as I am ?
They kill their own kids over not wearing a bag, or not having a thick enough forehead callous. Death with casualties is the jihadi goal, kill, kill, kill.
That's Islam's whole problem. We're all the enemy, including their own.

51 Purple Prose  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 7:04:31pm

If these were not the waning days of George W. Bush, maybe the government would go after this criminal organization. If Barack Hussein Obama is the next President, it'll be look the other way, as CAIR expands its influence. If it is McCain, maybe there is a fighting chance.

CAIR is subversive jihadi entity. It needs to be defined and pinned down for what it is. It was an unindicted co-conspirator in the HLF case, and there is more dirt on CAIR than there is on a hog in a pigsty after a hurricane. CAIR needs to be shut down for the good of mankind.

Will Obama do it? Not a chance. CAIR chapters have endorsed Obama, but then toned down their wording a bit when they realized this could jeopardize their non-profit status.

I swear, I hear this all the time, about how bad the Presidential election looks, but the polls do not bear that out. It's still a dead heat in every reliable poll (The ones that ask the same number of democrat voters as republican voters, not the over-sampling done by such wastes of paper like Newsweak).

As a stretch goal, how about an organization that a) actually isn't anti-American and b) also criticizes fellow Muslims who promote and/or carry out acts of barbarism?

A couple different ways to look at this, 1 good, the others not so much. The good way to look at this is to accept his resignation at face value, maybe he was frustrated at CAIR's inability to reach out to other less-religious Muslims. Given CAIR's declining membership numbers, this is believable. The other possibilities get a little darker. Maybe he was too much of a 'moderate' (not sure what a 'moderate Muslim' is , I hear they exist, but I never seem to hear any) for the Saudi paymasters to allow in a position of power. Maybe his own national board doesn't think he is doing enough to promote Muslim rights, and they want more of a fire-breather. Couple quick thoughts, lets see what happens.

EC, I want desperately to agree with you, but I can't...whilst McCain prevaricated for 3 months, and has sat idle for another, he has left the field open to Obama for the journalist love-in. We see that on the cover of Rolling Stone, etc.

McCain is fighting a 1976 presidential campaign against a 1960 candidate and a 1968 cultural atmosphere. It's madness.

95 lawhawk  Tue, Jul 8, 2008 7:15:06pm

CAIR has a tendency to back the weak horse - supporting avowed and admitted terrorists, unindicted coconspirators, etc.

That's not exactly a tradition worth holding on to, and maybe some of those involved are realizing that CAIR doesn't have their interests at heart.

So, they'll strike out on their own, form their own groups, and push their agendas under different names.

Same results though.

If he uses up his talking points about Obama wanting to surrender to a bunch of vitriolic nutheads right now, that'll give the giant vulva a chance to think of a comeback. A very stupid comeback, spoken in a very inspiring way.

needs to be more inclusive of younger, less-religious Muslims and encourage regular turnover of leadership ranks to ensure an infusion of new ideas,

They tried for the first 100 hours. Nothing.
Then, they worked for the first 100 days.

I think they passed a minimum wage hike, which had the tangential effect of increasing the unemployment rate this spring as high school grads found that businesses weren't hiring as many people because they had to cover the higher minimum wage.

Other than that - not much of anything, and clearly no energy policy other than to blow a whole bunch of hot air while the price of oil goes through the roof.

Their idea of an energy policy is to blow smoke - not to create a single watt of power or extract a single barrel of oil from US soil.

I think McCain is biding his time and he will bring out the heavy artillery after the conventions.

Obama's charisma will have worn thin by then, best efforts of the MSM notwithstanding, and charisma is all he has. Obama will probably get a poll bump right after the Dem convention, as usual. In the longer term, the convention will work against him. The media will not be able to conceal the all out moonbat weirdness that will dominate the convention itself, with color-coded menus and recycling monitors, to say nothing of any far left rioting in the streets.
Similarly, terrorist sympathizers unambiguously promise something akin to war in the streets at the Republican convention, in a naked effort to deny the civil rights of Republicans. If they come through at all, the overall effect will be to create sympathy for the GOP.

I am standing by my prediction of a McCain landslide, Obama will be the Dems' biggest loser since Jefferson Davis.

I agree with that. Over on the rasmussen political markets betting site, the 'president obama' contract isn't doing that well

I remember at a betting site when Rudy was about 3 to 1 over his closest rival. I just spent three days in the heartland of my state and Obama has ZERO support outside of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. They're going to have to keep the polls open until 9 p.m. Thanksgiving Day for Obama to win Pennsylvania.

It is welcome that Parvez Ahmed has resigned from CAIR and is leaving a record of (at least some of) his disagreements with CAIR. It is an open question why Dr. Ahmed stayed with CAIR so long and, more importantly, how sincere he is, but his statements as well as the terse on about his departure issued by CAIR indicate the trouble is afoot. From as much a detached position as possible, I would say that Ahmed is a moderate "Islamist" (whatever that means) who is at odds with the in-your-face tactics of CAIR, which is clearly dominated by a strange combination of morons and somewhat more sophisticated jihadis.

CAIR's decentralization seems to me a huge vulnerability. Local CAIR chapters could be challenged independently of the central CAIR operation.

CAIR could easily be taken down, piece-by-piece if not in one big swoop, if only there were the political will. Its ties to terrorism and its illegal activities are part of the public record.

That said, I think lots have law schools had their own Kingsfield. (We certainly had ours.)

I think that's right. I will still research, and chat with my friend who told me that (I've heard it from others, anecdotally).

BTW, that prof I mentioned above who did the bone dance was not the U of M Law School prof recently arrested for soliciting sex with a prostitute.

"Donald Marvin Jones, who has worked at the law school since 1988, approached a female, undercover police officer who was posing as a prostitute, according to the city of Miami Police Department incident report.

The report says Jones offered the officer $20 for sex, and was subsequently stopped and arrested after the police officer gave the "take down signal."

The arrest occurred on Aug. 22 at the Little River neighborhood at the intersection of N.W. 1st Court and N.W. 79th Street, at 10:05 p.m."

I didn't get what he was doing in NW 1st Ct. until I saw his photo.

re: #133 Racer X

We also have to be discerning about those runnig as Republicans. There was that little spending spree the GOP-controlled Congress went on a few years ago. Also, in the Alabama GOP primary this year, the state teacher's union entered a "republican" in a state school board race in hopes of defeating a very strong Republican incumbent.

They lick the inside of their lower arms, where the blood vessels are closest to the surface. As moisture need heat to evaporate, the blood cools as the surface dries.

Considering that they're down to some ridiculously small number of dues-paying members, I think that he that pays the piper calls the tune.

That doesn't mean anyone with America's good at heart.

Never underestimate CAIR. They get millions from the Gulf States. They are rich as all hell. Time to crack down on foreign funding of US organizations, particularly subversive organizations...yes! Will it happen? I don't see any sane legislation like that being considered.

Who knows what kind of support CAIR gets from rank-and-file Muslims in the US. Their official disclosure to the IRS shows that they have very few members, but that does not mean that their mission is not largely supported by many Muslims. The existence of myriad other Islamic organizations, like MSA and ISNA to start with (both of which have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and are Wahhabist influenced and/or funded), with devoted followers measured in much larger figures suggests that the problem is quite significant.

The bottom line is that until there is a *real* moderate Muslim organization (which would be considered apostate by the hardliners), there is no hope for peaceful Islam in America. As in Europe, it will be a zero-sum game, where either freedom wins or Sharia wins.

It was up to Muslims post-9/11 (pre-9/11, but let's just give them the benefit of the doubt) to come up with a moderate political counterweight to the pro-jihadi/pro-sharia organizations that Muslims have initiated in the dozens and dozens in the US. Nothing of the sort has arisen. That speaks volumes. There simply is no moderate Muslim political movement in the West at all. It's 2008. Nothing. This is telling.

Obama is a type of person I deal with all the time.

He's a manager.

He is not a leader.

He can manage to say the right things to get elected.

But he will need every damn person in the Executive Branch to keep his (and our) ass out of trouble.

He will make no decisions and even the ones he will claim to make will really be forced on him.

He will be a master at making the mediocre look brilliant and the awful seem OK.

And in the end any mess that "his folks" could not clean up, hide, stomp, or run over will be someone else's fault.

I think I saw someone write that he more of a Clinton than Hillary.

Oh, years ago, I read a book by Laurence Sanders, in which his narrator pointed out that specific dogma and doctrine always fail; it's far better to simply use a vague slogan and the command, "believe".

He meant it to apply to spirituality, but it is equally - in fact more - applicable to politics.

Truly, the vague slogans and the empty anecdotes and the meaningless, mealy-mouthed pronouncements of Obama allow people to project whatever they wish onto "hope/change we can believe in".

It would be nice if people woke up to the emptiness and rejected it.

The real problem with CAIR, for non-muslims in America, is that CAIR is not "radical". It is orthodox. The following (spoken to muslims in California in 1998), from Omar Ahmad, chairman of CAIR back then, is entirely orthodox islam in its piety, message, and intent:

"If you choose to live here (in America) . . . you have a responsibility to deliver the message of Islam...Islam isn't in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant, " he said. "The Koran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth"

This is a no-fault State, full of transients (mentioned by another Lizard above), and a laid-back ethos. So long as you keep yourself out of trouble, you can live a completely eccentric life down here with no one interrupting you because no one...cairs.

(groan, sorry)

Also, in case anyone is still reading this, I think I found the Paper Chase professor's name. I remembered it was mentioned frequently after he had passed on.

Though I don't have my chum's confirmation, it's John Ely Hart, the renowned conlaw scholar and UM Law professor (as he was, at the end of his life).

Just a "re-deployment"

Watch for the gee-hud insertion of the [bigoted word] surge....coming to a local city council near you...."But I wash for supper!"...........

“He had an opportunity to take it to the next level and I think he failed,”

Makes you wonder what "level" they had in mind.

I mean isn't it a little bit Islamophobic that the American flag features all those little stars, but no crescent moon?

There's also the issue that many Americans associate Islamic terrorism with Islam. This is groundless and only serves to oppress & humiliate Muslims.

Finally, he never managed to get American society to accept Hamas as legitimate Palestinian government, and see their daily attempts to murder Israeli civilians as "resistance".

Perhaps the next leader will be more progressive in these areas.

I warned this about the BNP. They will move to soften their image, only to conceal their true hate and agendas.

re: #14 opnion

Wonder if he is trying to avoid some legal problem.

Another, indictment being unsealed?

Time for him hightail it out of the country before the feds put the collar on him?

If this guy was so naive as to think he could change a Wahabbi inspired organization to allow Muslim youth to adapt to the American way of life then he belongs in academia where such fictions reign supreme.

So, the good news is they're hiring?

# 23, hey, I'm a straight white male. Civil rights?, I ain't got no stinkin' civil rights! My job is to shut the fuck up, and pay as I'm told, and oh yes, accept the insult of being racist, sexist, homophobic and generally "evil" as I destroy the mother earth goddess.

Did Parvez Ahmed jump or was he pushed?

Ahmed said one of his unrealized goals was to transform the council into an organization that doesn’t sound anti-American when it’s criticizing government policies.

“And I got a little bit burned out pushing so hard” for the organization to be more open and transparent, he said.

...“Ultimately, the majority of organizational stakeholders supported a vision for implementing change and growth that differed from that of Dr. Ahmed,” the statement said.

Sounds like he was pushed out for not being radical enough.

Mr. Ahmed, one thing that would probably help your cause is to convince your homies over in the Middle East to stop shooting people and detonating bombs. Just a thought.

If you will notice Bob Dole is pretty much coming out in strong defense of McCain. Actually he is doing better at defending McCain than McCain is in defending himselfre: #57 opnion

Harry Reed today said that Congress' approval rating is so low because it is being dragged down by Bush.

Heh! It's got nothing to do with what's happened to the country since you took over in 2006, eh Harry?

Ever since, Iraq's gotten better and the US has gotten worse.

You're a failure, Harry "the war is lost" Reid.
