It's #147:
My love is as a fever longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease,
Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill,
Th'uncertain sickly appetite to please.
My reason, the physician to my love,
Angry that his prescriptions are not kept,
I lath left me, and I desperate now approve
Desire is death, which physic did except.
Past cure I am, now reason is past care,
And frantic mad with evermore unrest;
My thoughts and my discourse as madmen's are,
At random from the truth vainly expressed:
For I have sworn thee fair, and thought thee bright,
Who art as black as hell, as dark as night.
Not to everyone's taste, the sonnet cycle. But very much to mine.

When my love swears that she is made of truth,
I do believe her though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutored youth,
Unlearned in the world's false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed:
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O! love's best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love, loves not to have years told:
Therefore I lie with her, and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flattered be.
And if that's not the truth, no one ever told it.

Dianna, my friend, sharing sonnets... Here's one of my favorites:
Is it thy will, thy image should keep open
My heavy eyelids to the weary night?
Dost thou desire my slumbers should be broken,
While shadows like to thee do mock my sight?
Is it thy spirit that thou send'st from thee
So far from home into my deeds to pry,
To find out shames and idle hours in me,
The scope and tenor of thy jealousy?
O, no! thy love, though much, is not so great:
It is my love that keeps mine eye awake:
Mine own true love that doth my rest defeat,
To play the watchman ever for thy sake:
For thee watch I, whilst thou dost wake elsewhere,
From me far off, with others all too near.

This is a favorite for play, if not for emotion:
Whoever hath her wish, thou hast thy will,
And 'Will' to boot, and 'Will' in over-plus,
More than enough am I that vex thee still,
To thy sweet will making addition thus.
Wilt thou whose will is large and spacious,
Not once vouchsafe to hide my will in thine?
Shall will in others seem right gracious,
And in my will no fair acceptance shine?
The sea all water, yet receives rain still,
And in abundance addeth to his store,
So thou being rich in will add to thy will
One will of mine to make thy large will more.
Let no unkind, no fair beseechers kill,
Think all but one, and me in that one 'Will.'
Truly brilliant, but not appealing.
I'm off to walk dogs and head for bed.
Take care!

While Beethoven would be my desert island composer, my desert island classical recording would be either the '55 or the '81 Glenn Gould recordings of the Bach Goldberg Variations. He was an absolute genius and I have never heard the piano played the same since his passing.
The difference in the two recordings is truly amazing. One is of a rambunctious young man and the other is of a very introspective older man. The '81 recording of the exact same piece is over 15 minutes longer if memory serves me correctly.

Since you were the first respondent, just a few adjustments. What is spiritual: praying quietly with a holy book they can buy themselves, or shaking chicken bones out on the floor to divine the future. What about thousands of dollars of grape juice and matzah? What about Islamic books which many of use at LGF consider radicalized and hostile to non-Muslims? Why can't faith-based organizations in the private sector pay for the accouterments?

I ain't Shakespeare, but:
She dwells in serendipitous delight,
With hair of fire and gaze of tempting draw.
The sirens' call that wrecked ships in the night
Still lives, in words that make my breath run raw.
When standing still, she glides yet over me,
And forces me to let my mind take flight.
Within the molded barrier I see
The shrouded secret of her precious sight.
As sweet strains of Ravel float to my ear,
I come to know the tricks desires play;
As my attention easily draws near
Her sweet perfume, my thoughts are far away.
The charms of Eros and sweet Helen's den:
Such yearning tests the strength of many men.

So far away, and yet so near to me

The shine of Helen for whom warriors fell
The mystery of night surrounds her face
A quiet strength, with quiet strength obscured
And guarded with Divine import's embrace
They see a one whom life has not demurred
But oh! to touch the raven's tresses straight
And see the glint of such a lovely smile
A jealousy makes difficult the wait

The Billaries care more about bringing him down than they care about the Demonrats, and for our country, which should be any candidate for office's first priority. We have 2 of the worst of the worst Dems who have done nothing for our country, and a hero, John McCain, who does care, and also is far more of a man of the people.

I understand your concern, but really - I think our Defense budget is something like $560 BILLION a year - where the hell is he gonna get the money to fund it?
And besides, if they act up, all we gotta do is send a call for help to the 82nd Airborne, they'll send a platoon and take care of ALL those black shirt, black bow-tied, Black gunmen.
But I are surprised that the MSM hasn't picked up on this.
I mean, suppose McCain said the same thing - he'd be roasting on a slow spit!
To me costs are not the issue main issue in this case. They are a trivial side bar. The very fact that he is proposing such a thing is the issue to me. The fact that he put the idea out there and it got past everyone until Charles caught it is amazing.
But the question is still "why"? Why have a civilian force as big and heavily armed as the U.S. military? The kind of societies that have done that in the past are not places I'd associate with freedom and individual rights. One guy mentioned "Brownshirts" and that's not an unreasonable thought.
I'm hoping that Obama is just flat out stupid and this is why he says things like that, but I'm going to take him seriously, because I can't afford to not take him seriously.

Yes, this is the excerpted report:
OAKLAND, Calif. -- California is making it mandatory for cars to be labeled with global warming scores, figures that take into account emissions from vehicle use and fuel production.
The law requiring the labels goes into effect at the start of next year for all 2009 model cars, though its expected the labels will be popping up on cars in the coming months.
The labeling law forces cars for sale to display a global warming score, on a scale of one to 10, which is based on how vehicles in the same model year compare to one another. The higher the score, the cleaner a car is. The score takes into account emissions related to production of fuel for each vehicle as well as the direct emissions from vehicles.
The score will be displayed next to the already-required smog score, which also rates cars one to 10 for how many smog-forming emissions they emit. For both scores, an average vehicle will have a score of five.
California is the first state of pass such as law, and a similar law will take effect in New York for 2010 model year vehicles. Global warming scores will be included on the state's DriveClean website. [...]

War clouds continue to build in the epicenter. Last month in Rome, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad vowed that the United States and Israel would soon be "annihilated," language he had not used so explicitly since October 2005 when he promised to wipe Israel "off the map" and urged Muslims to "envision a world without the United States." This week, his regime authorized a new series of Iranian war games. He ordered the digging of 320,000 graves to bury the enemies of Islam. He is calling for the unification of the Islamic world politically and economically, including the creation of a single currency.

The Billaries care more about bringing him down than they care about the Demonrats, and for our country, which should be any candidate for office's first priority. We have 2 of the worst of the worst Dems who have done nothing for our country, and a hero, John McCain, who does care, and also is far more of a man of the people.
Well, all I care about is that our individual rights are upheld per Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence, because when we are free we can live. When we are made serfs of the state (taxed and regulated in every conceivable way) all bets are off.

I know the intent is to prevent vehicle operators from blocking out the sounds of car horns and of sirens on emergency vehicles. But in modern, quiet, air-conditioned cars, the sound of the outside world is pretty well blocked out anyway, especially if you really have the tunes cranked up.
This could easily be solved by technology. Simply have all car horns, and all emergency vehicle sirens, emit, in tandem with the audible sound, a radio-frequency signal on a designated channel. All new cars could be built with an always-on receiver tuned to this channel, and it would be wired to over-ride the car's own sound system at a high level. Private vehicles would be equipped with very low-power RF transmitters coupled to the horns, so it would only break through the receiver squelch on other vehicles in very close proximity. Big trucks and railroad locomotives would be permitted more power, because they pose a greater danger to a daydreaming motorist. And emergency vehicles would be allowed the maximum power needed to do the job.
If directional antennas were used, you could even have a little graphic on the dash to pinpoint the direction from which the warning signal was coming. This would be a big help to me, as I have a hard time fixing the direction of sounds like emergency vehicle sirens.
None of this would cost an arm and a leg to implement, and it would be easy to design an accessory system to retro-fit existing cars.

Everyone should imprint one Shakespeare sonnet on their synapses.
From memory:
Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May
And Summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometimes too hot the eye of heaven shines
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometimes declines
By chance or Nature's changing course, untrimmed.
But thy eternal Summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st,
No shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade
When in eternal lines to Time thou grow'est.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Amazes little children, charms nubile maids, and staves off Alzheimer's.

The best part is that comments aren't being permitted for the story. The line used is that legal proceedings are underway. I think they don't want the common man screaming his head off about how useless the police force is making themselves look.

Speaking of sonnets, this one has to be my favourite.
Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
I read this in HS english class as part of our poetry section. I just happened to have done my first solo flight on my glider scholarship. The way I was able to read it grabbed the class and teachers attention. I still feel it all these years later.

CNN: Rebels proposed peace days before hostage rescue
Alfonso Cano, leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, sent a message to his supporters recently proposing talks with the government on an exchange of prisoners and possible peace deal, according to a RCN Radio of Colombia, which revealed the letter in a broadcast Tuesday, and the Bolivariana News Agency of Venezuela. The message was dated June 28 -- a few days before a Colombian raid freed 15 high-profile hostages that had been under the FARC's control, including former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and three U.S. defense contractors.
It was not possible to determine whether Cano maintained his position after the raid, the Bolivariana News Agency reported.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that since Iran favors dialogue, it is ready to hold talks with the US presidential candidates before mass media.
[...]
"Last year, I announced in the UN Headquarters at New York that I am ready to talk with Bush about the global issues and now I also declare that I am prepared to debate with the US presidential candidates," the president said.Asked by Reuters about Iran's stance on nuclear issue, Ahmadinejad said, "Our nuclear position completely is clear: law and justice for all." "We will never withdraw from our positions even by an inch,"
Come'on Hussein...this one's for you!

This is not good. Even if Iran can’t develop a 1 ton nuke, a ton of good old TNT can do a lot of damage.
The Tehran TV bulletin Wednesday, July 9, announcing the test-launch of the Shehab-3 missile, one of nine launched from an undisclosed desert location, stressed that with a 2,000 km range it could reach Israel.
DEBKAfile reports: Two other types of missile with shorter ranges were also fired as part of the Great Prophet III war games launched two days ago by Revolutionary Guards navy, air force and ground units. Along with the statement, Guards air force commander Hossein Salami said: "We are ready to defend the integrity of the Iranian nation." Tuesday, the senior IRGC Navy cleric said: If the US attacks Iran, “we will immediately strike back at Tel Aviv. Our first target is Tel Aviv and only then will we attack US shipping in the Persian Gulf.” Monday, a US-UK-Bahrani naval exercise began to drill measures for protecting Gulf oil installations.

G8 backs negotiating path over Iran nuclear programme
The Group of Eight (G8) leading industrial countries called Wednesday on Iran to suspend its nuclear programme, but again vowed to try and resolve the issue through negotiation.‘We express our serious concern at the proliferation risks posed by Iran's nuclear programme and Iran's continued failure to meet its international obligations,’ G8 leaders said in a statement issued at their meeting in Toyako, Japan.

Perks of penance for Saudi jihadis
In a small compound on the outskirts of Riyadh, the Saudi government is exploring new ways to combat extremism.
This is still a prison, run by the Ministry of Interior and housed inside secure premises with high perimeter walls and barbed wire, but the Saudi authorities prefer to call it a "care centre" and refer to prisoners as "beneficiaries".This is not what you would imagine when you think of a typical Saudi jail.
Inside, prisoners enjoy access to wide-ranging recreational facilities including their own swimming pools, video games and table tennis. In return for the more relaxed environment, prisoners have to attend religious education classes where Islamic scholars challenge their views.
[...]
Since its creation no-one from the care centre has reoffended. But the support received by prisoners on their release suggests their reasons for maintaining good behaviour might not always reflect genuine ideological change.
Graduates can typically expect the government to meet the cost of their wedding and have also enjoyed home refurbishments along with new cars.

I think they'll have all the "usual suspects": Exxon, Halliburton, General Motors, and the entire defense industry to spin conspiracy theories on and try to blame.
Also I don't think they'll throw BO under the bus- he's too much of a "useful idiot" to sacrifice after getting him into so high an office. Rather I think the meme will be that Bush so "completely screwed things up" that BO could not possibly "straighten it all out" in one term and hence deserves a SECOND term to finish "fixing" all the things Bush "screwed up".
That's how I see it anyway...

[Link: www.usatoday.com...]
Democrat Barack Obama took issue Monday with President Bush's decision to attend the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, saying he would go to Beijing only if he saw progress between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama.
"In the absence of some sense of progress, in the absence of some sense from the Dalai Lama that there was progress, I would not have gone," the presidential candidate told reporters at a news conference.
Obama previously has called on the Republican president to boycott the ceremonies.
Bush said last week that he will attend opening ceremonies for the games in Beijing next month. Some world leaders plan to boycott the event because of China's human rights record and its handling of unrest in Tibet.
Chinese officials met last week with two envoys sent to Beijing by the Dalai Lama from his exile base in India.

Good Morning Lizards.
Well, Pelosi clearly has no understanding of economics.
Pelosi Asks Bush to Draw From Petroleum Reserve to Combat Surge in Oil Prices
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked President Bush on Tuesday to draw down a portion of the country's Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a way to reduce crude prices and help motorists who are suffering from the rising cost of gasoline.
Here is her specific request:
"The severe energy price crisis facing millions of Americans compels strong presidential action to assist consumers and strengthen the economy," Pelosi said in her letter, which asked Bush to "draw down a small portion" of the country's oil reserve.
Simply put, this so called "solution" will do absolutely nothing to improve the oil price situation. The existing high oil prices are due to rising demand and very slow to increase supplies. Therefore, taking some portion of an existing supply out of storage and releasing to the market does absolutely nothing to change the sustainable supply of oil or the demand for fuel. Even if the President did this, then what? Release more next month?
If you want to see prices drop, then ongoing supply needs to increase or demand needs to drop.
Thinking that Pelosi's request will work is like thinking that if you are broke, out of work, and losing your house that finding $5 in a coat pocket will appreciably improve your situation.
I see this request by Pelosi as nothing more than political posturing. While I'm not surprised by it in the least, it does not bode well for seeing any real improvement in the situation coming from Congress in the forseeable future.
The solution will come from the market, as usual.

Well, it's patent horseshit, unless BO somehow wants to explain to his base that Iran, Venezuela, North Korea are good and worth speaking with, meanwhile China is bad and not even worth visiting, much less speaking with.
I happen to agree with the words that he has spoken, but coming from him, it's a lie.

I saw a commercial from T. Boone Pickens on Fox a few minute ago in which he stated that the only way out of the situation is to go with wind and solar power, and that the next president and congress must pursue that course. What's up with him? Has he gone over to the BHO side?

No clue. Maybe he has gone the way of Ted Turner--so far off the left's deep end that Wolf Blitzer had to drag him back to the mainstream.

In economic terms, 10 years passes very quickly. I disagree with those who say that we can't "drill our way out of this." Of course we can, there are billions and billions of proved supplies out there if we only will allow the drilling.
It kind of reminds me of a conversation I had with a good friend many years ago when I was thinking of going to grad school. I was worried about how old I would be when i was done. I said that the problem was it would take me about 5 years to do the degree program and I would be about 31 then. He said "So, how old will you be in 5 years if you don't go to grad school? Do you want to be 31 with the extra degree or 31 without it?"
Really, it's just a matter of how high up the money tree that we want to chase ourselves before we allow more drilling and refining. Is $4 a gallon high enough? $5? How about $10 a gallon? How high do we need it to go before we wake up?

In raids backed by dozens of police, Ecuador's state banking agency took over TC Television, TC Noticias and Gamavision stations, along with dozens of insurance, construction and real estate businesses owned outright or in part by Quito's Isaias family.
Isaias brothers William and Roberto, both bankers, are now facing embezzlement charges linked to the 1998 collapse of Filanbanco, once one of Ecuador's biggest banks.
SNIP
Ecuador Economy Minister Fausto Ortiz resigned immediately before the takeover and was replaced by state banking agency head Wilma Salgado, who suggested Tuesday that Ecuador may not continue paying its sovereign debt.
"We're interested in paying our social debts and not submitting the population to the dictatorship of international financial markets," she said.
Ortiz could not be reached for comment, but TC Television's vice president for news, Jose Toledo, said he had resigned because he opposed the takeovers.

That was basically my take. I can almost understand some sort of class for parents that want to teach their own kids to drive instead of using drivers ed, but requiring parents to sit through a 2 hour course just so the kid can take the test seems ridiculous. And besides, how much is this going to cost the taxpayers?

I view it like co-signing for a credit card. The minor's has training wheels, as it were, but the parent's card gets dinged in case of disaster. This is a market-tested reasonable system of behavior management, done solely through financial incentives and after all, the child doesn't *need* a credit card any more than he needs a license.
I feel that in the pedestrian, City Hall and license sense of the term, children don't have rights--parents have rights, and they have responsibilities to their children, in lieu of children's rights.

I can see informing parents of their legal liability if their little dears under 18 get behind the wheel and hurt someone. I think quite a few parents out there do not realize that liability and thus don't care a whole lot what happens until it's too late.
One of the bigger risks I see out there are people on cell phones behind the wheel.
A few years ago I got hit on my bike by a very young driver. She blew a stop sign and took me out, I ended up on her windshield. 16 year old girl who never got off her cell phone the whole time.
Luckily I only had a few bumps and my bike was okay.

News flash... The game of baseball was invented for the sole purpose of giving the American working class an excuse to drink beer in public. The whole absurd notion of paying attention to stats didn't come alone for another 40 years. The cubs fans got it right, it isnt and never was intended to be about the game itself or the players, but about socializing and having a really good time regardless of who won or loss.
Well , thak you for the news flash. So the Cub games are like ice fishing, a reason to drink. Why not just go to a bar & forget the pretense of baseball?

I don't know how many teens actually understand that they're parents will be on the hook for things like deductibles and the like.

BDU's are baggy to begin with but when they start wearing them down around their midriffs with their bdu tops over thinking I wouldn't notice.. they had another thing coming. I was just trying to remember the Muslims who are sharing with the IDer's here.
It was on last night's ID thread that I finally saw the real nature of what Charles is getting hit with--it's the same as "seminar callers", if you're familiar with the talk radio term.
The calls in to the radio shows and the posts here at LGF follow an easily-discernible template:
A) Defence Suppression: Innocuous-sounding introduction designed to build credibility, perhaps with a *little too much* explanation as to why the poster is not a regular. In radio, it usually goes "Now I have always been a Republican, and I love President Bush, but...", or some such thing.
B) Payload: Argument or citation of other work which runs counter to the local view, and which if unaccompanied by the Defence Suppression, would surely trigger a cascade of criticism.
It's no guarantee, and even I have posted using this rubric, when appropriate (we all do from time to time, it's a valid way of speaking, of course), but when it's the same POV on the same topic, and concentrated in a timeframe, it's a good indicator that you are in the midst of a seminar attack.

Well , thak you for the news flash. So the Cub games are like ice fishing, a reason to drink. Why not just go to a bar & forget the pretense of baseball?
Why do anything at all? Why should anyone not playing give a flying crap about any sport? If you're to lame to get out there and play yourself why bother watching someone else play? Oh yea, because we all have slightly different concepts of what exactly constitutes entertainment. Some people go to watch the game, some people go to watch the people watching the game, and some people go to watch the people watching the people watching the game.
How anyone could possibly be so fucking anal as to be offended that someone might go to a game and not watch the game is totally beyond me. Who gives a crap why they are there. Unless you are actually playing the game you're just a spectator, how or why you choose to specatate is your business not some anal pricks. If Cubs fans choose to go to the game and have a really good time regardless of who win, then it sounds like the Cubs fans are the real winners and anyone offended by their behavior is the real looser.

This is the magic of how kids learn language. Even if you somehow have a child who, it is guaranteed, has never heard the term hitch or britches, you can deliver the line while glowering at the incipient plumber's smile*, and suddenly they will know the exact meaning of the words, and the rapidity implied.

Part of the Cubs problem is also their good fortune.
They do not have to put a good product on the field, you know, lovable losers.
People go to Wrigley to party & a baseball game breaks out.
That does not make the bad, but it is pretty clear that Sox fans are more serious & knowledgeable about the game.
On Family Guy last night:
Peter takes Stewie (a baby) to a Red Sox game, but leaves him in the car by accident. Two fans walk by see Stewie panting away inside the locked car and one of them says,
"Oh my God! that baby was left in the car!"
Other one says, "Oh my God! He'll miss the game!"
They keep walking.

In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Northwestern University
On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully.
He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.
Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed his stupid ass against the railing, killing him instantly.
Probably wasn't the same elephant.

Actually, I don't recall anybody saying that they were offended by anything.
We were discussing why the Chicago Cubs organization tends to go 100 years at a time without winning a Championship is all. Having a fan base who is not all that concerned about what goes on on the field could very likely be a contributing factor, but if that works for them, great.
I personally like supporting a team that is trying to win, but to each their own.

Upperclassman: "Gads! At Harvard, we do not end our sentences in prepoitions!"
Freshman: "Oh, of course. Well, where's the library at, Asshole?"
As I explained to another Lizard, the Freshman added an appositive but did not correct the error. The problem isn't a preposition at the end; it's a preposition without an object (which often happens when it's at the end of the sentence, so the "rule" is a kind of a shortcut.)
ex: Where is it at? > Where is it?
ex: What are you looking at? = correct because the object of "at" is "what."

For those who care, here is some more details on the Cubs recent addition:
Cubs trade four players to A's for pitchers Harden, Gaudin
Harden, eligible to be a free agent after the 2009 season, is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts this season. He's scheduled to make $4.75 million this season.
"We will have the rights for a year and a half, so that's the other advantage of him not being a free agent," Hendry said. "He has an option that could vest, or we could pick up the option or we could arbitrate. So he certainly has a chance to be a Cub through the end of next year."
The oft-injured Harden missed a month earlier this season because of a right shoulder strain. It was his sixth trip to the disabled list in his six-year career.
According to someone I know inside baseball, Harden's innings pitched need to be "carefully managed".
Hope it works out for them.

Hey, good morning my friend! What are EV's anyway?
And y'all have to remember that McCain: a) has agreed to take public financing which give Obama about $100 million more buckos than does McCain and b) The MSM, though pretending to be pissed off at the Obamamessiah, is still carrying water for him and c) McCain has taken only a few shots back at Obama, but everyone of McCains' shots hits the target; Obama is just TOO FULL OF HIMSELF to actually win the election. Gonna be just like Kerry for the Dems, only MUCH WORSE.

A-Rod, ex-stripper could go a-court-in’
The ex-Boston stripper who had a brief fling with the very-married A-Rod back in 2004 may get dragged into the Yankees slugger’s high-stakes divorce. An attorney for Rodriguez’ scorned wife said Cynthia Rodriguez’ legal team may be interested in talking to Candice Houlihan. The Reading hairdresser and ex-exotic dancer says she had a two-night fling with Alex Rodriguez when his wife was pregnant with their first child.
“Anybody with eyes or ears knows that that’s an issue in this case,” Houston attorney John Van Ness told the Track yesterday.

I asm convinced that you could put 9 trained monkeys in cubs uniforms, throw them out on the field and Wrigley Field would draw 36,000 to drink beer.
I've sat in the bleachers and been the only one there actually paying attention to the game. There were guys hitting on girls, girls hitting on guys, girls hitting on girls, guys hitting on guys, and none of them even knew what was going on in the game. It was like one big meat market put there.
I have had similar experiences. I have a friend who is a self descibed "Die Hard Cubs Fan"

Ya know, you are taking this way to serious. I am just screwing around, Whatever. Go Sox

Wow, what a genius he was - although he did say that Led Zep had more groupies (ducks Hoosier's pointed stick) than did Barry, but not if you added up all the members of Led Zep and divided by 3+ (each one had their own personal "assistants" to go find certain chicks groupies in the audience to bring back stage for a few minutes of personal time!).

Why is it that we never hear about when (0+ / 0-)
the US conducts a missile test? But when Iran does it it's the end of the world and we're all going to die in a hail of missiles. If i were an Iranian leader, i'd want some kind of protection from these crazies. If nuclear is the best detterent(and i think after the N.Korea example we can all agree it is) the sooner Iran gets the bomb the better in my opinion.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that Iran is busy saber rattling again, with their latest military drills and test firing of long range missiles. It's curious that they do so just hours after Ahmadinejad says that the risk of war is low. It's also curious that the drill took place just days after the US conducted military exercises in the Gulf. Coincidence? I think not.

I've heard that some good whiskey will cure those flashbacks! I honestly think McCain has waaay more fire in the belly than did Dole - I mean he's already smacked Barry around like a pinata a few times, he's just more genteel about it than we would be, for example!
I hope you're right but there's always Leo Durocher to consider. I just hope McCain remembers what happens to "nice guys" in politics as well as in baseball.
/In either case I'll take your advice on the whiskey!

re: #710 goddessoftheclassroom
As I explained to another Lizard, the Freshman added an appositive but did not correct the error. The problem isn't a preposition at the end; it's a preposition without an object (which often happens when it's at the end of the sentence, so the "rule" is a kind of a shortcut.)
ex: Where is it
at? > Where is it?
ex: What are you looking at? = correct because the object of "at" is "what."
Actually, your second example may still not be correct, depending.
Some of our grammar rules were forged in the attempt to justify bringing the Bible to English from Latin, and to defuse the criticism that English was not sufficiently structured to carry the Word, Latin grammar rules were applied more forcefully than they may naturally have been. Evidence for this? What the prohibitions against split infinitives and terminal prepositions have in common is that neither of these violations can be performed in Latin. The infinitive form in latin does not use a separate word like "to", and so it never occurs. Prepositions are still separate, but other grammar rules in Latin prevent the sentence from taking a structure where you could reasonably tag the preposition on the end.
On a barely related note, I puzzle over things like this: "We are in!"
In this case, you could argue that "in" is short for "in (somewhere)", and that is it some form of rolled-up prep. phrase.
Or perhaps in this case, "in" is moonlighting as an adverb (of place) or adjective (if syntax outweighs semantics).
I have no idea what the official word is on a sentence like this.

MIAMI — Rising gasoline prices have brought a new twist on the state lottery in Florida.
Once a week for the next two months, the second-prize winner in the latest lottery promotion, Summer Cash, will win free gasoline for life. And some people think that is a better deal than the game’s first prize, a quarter of a million dollars.
SNIP
Not that a winner’s right to free gasoline is unlimited. Rather, each winner will be awarded 26 prepaid gas cards, each worth $100, every year until death. Were the 44-year-old Mr. Acosta to win, and live to be twice his current age, the total payout to him in free gasoline would be $114,400. That is far short of the first prize, particularly since virtually all the gas prize would be paid in future dollars.
SNIP
Rubbish. Utter rubbish.

Beurhhe always goes through a stretch where he gets lazy on the mound and tips his pitches (watch his glove, he tends to tip fastball vs breaking ball to the point where I can call then from my couch over the TV), it's about time for Crede to have his annual back injury, Thome looks really old lately (slowing bat), and the league is catching up to their younger players.
