Obama to Vote for FISA Bill

Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 9:00:01 am PDT

Today, Barack Obama is going to vote for the FISA bill he swore to filibuster when he needed the support of the far left.

The Senate is finally expected to wrap up the bill updating the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act today, which includes the controversial provision of retroactive immunity for telecom companies facing lawsuit. While the bill splits Democrats, it’s expected to pass with united Republican support.

Obama will be back for today’s vote and has said he’ll support final passage.

The voting starts approximately 11:15 am ET, and everything on FISA should be wrapped up by 12:30 pm ET or so.

The Daily Kos Kooks are already gearing up for a serious tantrum, of course: Daily Kos: F*** the Democrats!

F*** Reid, F*** Pelosi, F*** Hoyer, F***Rockefeller, and , yes, F*** Obama. F*** ‘em all!

What's ironic is that they're idiots who wants the constitution dead when it comes to individual rights especially towards the Second Amendment. Because they're all about the collective right!

It should be all too apparent to anyone with a pulse that Obama stands for only one thing - the capacity to get elected President.

He has no moral or ethical center. He opposed FISA because it was expedient to do so when he needed to get the far left to support him.

Now, he needs the rest of America to believe that he supports national security and therefore votes accordingly (if he decides not to vote present).

I'm sure his advisors have run the numbers to see what would happen if he voted for it, against it, and present.

That's no way to conduct any kind of policy.

re: #98 joncelli

So is this the second recompete? And is Boeing going to offer USAF something they can actually use this time?

No, the detail is the same but with actual fairness to the bill. What the last contract failed to considered was that they did not account for military construction to accommodate the huge A330 size including shady math figures. Boeing had suggested the 777 which is the direct competitor of the A330 but the AF declined so Boeing never proposed it.

Also, Airbus is a heavily subsidized corporation which is not supposed to be tolerated in the free market system. Even Germany had put out a contract for a medium size cargo plane limiting it only to European manufacturers thus cutting out Boeing/Lockheed Martin out of the process. Therefore Airbus won the contract easily with the A400M.

I think it would be dangerous to assume that he has no moral compass. It is true that he will do anything to get elected, but then he will start trying to lead us in a direction that none of us want to go.

If he was nothing more than an amoral windbag who wanted to be President, then he wouldn't be half as dangerous as I believe he is.

I think it is fair and proper to assume that the man has no principles.

If Obama seriously is reversing his position on FISA because of ideological reasons (ie he suddenly realized its good law that we need as a nation), than he's both unqualified to be President and too disingenous to be a US Senator.

OT:
Why You Should Never Fly In An Iranian Aircraft

July 9, 2008: On July 7th, an Iranian F-5 fighter crashed during a training exercise. One could understand that, as the F5 was an American built jet fighter Iran bought over three decades ago. Spare parts have been hard to come by, but Iran has managed, sort of.

The big problem is not the loss of three decade old U.S. jet fighters, but the many other older transports and airliners that have been going down. In the last six years, there have been at least a dozen crashes, leaving about 700 passengers and crew dead. Most of the downed aircraft were not American. Many of the lost aircraft were Russian, a nation that has no problems selling Iran aircraft parts. So what's the problem? Simple. Iranian aircraft maintenance sucks. That's because a lousy economy and a really bothersome lifestyle police have caused many technically skilled people to flee the country. Plenty of competent Iranian aircraft mechanics and engineers in southern California, not so many in Iran.

To make matters worse, anything involving aviation in Iran, gets a lot of attention from the secret police. Anyone of questionable loyalty to the clerical theocracy (that runs the country) is not suitable for key jobs (be they technical or managerial.) As a result, many organizations in Iran, especially government controlled ones, are poorly run. That can be fatal for passengers in Iranian aircraft. There are plenty of dead bodies and aircraft wreckage to prove it. It also says a lot about the readiness and capabilities of the ships and aircraft of the Iranian armed forces.

That's actually good news. And McCain's been pushing for this whole mess to be recontracted. He wanted the leasing deal stricken (a deal that went to Boeing), and then wanted the contract process redone because Airbus got unfair advantage over Boeing.

Curiously, this would benefit Obama's home town of Chicago, which is home to Boeing's HQ.

That's bad news actually. The Northrop bid was far and away better than the Boeing bid, which was a "Good Enough" bid with lots of risk in it. The KC-30 (the base tanker type that Northrop would convert to the KC-45) is already flying and major components of the KC-45, such as the refueling boom, have already been flight tested.

This Re-bid will delay the replacement of our tankers by another two years at least. Two years during which our current fleet of ancient tankers will have to cover while the company that lost the lease deal due to some incredibly unethical conduct gets another chance. This contract would not have been overturned had there been another American manufacturer of airplanes capable of this task, but as it stands, there is a single US source for those types of planes, and by god, the politicians they bought and paid for had better protect it.

Hizbollah Ready For Another Rocket War

July 9, 2008: With Hizbollah installing thousands of rockets along its northern border, and some longer range rockets further away in central Lebanon, Israel is developing tactics it hopes will minimize the damage if there's another war like the one in 2006. Back then, the Israeli Air Force thought it could shut down the Hizbollah rockets from the air. But Hizbollah managed to launch 4,200 rockers, while the Israeli Air Force, despite flying 11,870 sorties, only found and destroyed 126 launchers.

So the next time around Israel is prepared to use anti-missile missiles against some 300 long range missiles (supplied by Iran via Syria). In 2006, Hizbollah fired some 200 long range missiles. Next time, Israel expects about 5,000 short range (6-20 kilometers) missiles, and will take those out with ground forces, using new equipment and tactics.

The UN peacekeepers now patrolling the Israeli border in southern Lebanon are not stopping Hizbollah from installing these 5,000 missiles. Hizbollah has intimidated the peacekeepers, who simply pretend they don't see the Hizbollah preparations. Otherwise, Hizbollah has made it clear that it will go to war with the Peacekeepers. So, in order to keep the peace, the Peacekeepers just pretend to do their job.

I truly believe John McCain can deliver the goods if only the hardcore conservatives can moderate their distaste for "maverick", get behind him, and push for better border security with optimism instead of cynicism and skepticism. I know that's a tall order given the history of rhetoric vs. action on border security issues. But.....Obama is simply not an option. Getting in bed with Maverick and focusing the power of the right is far better than the scorched earth path of letting the traitorcrats ruin the nation while standing by and saying " I told you so!".

Actually it is right. The boom that Northrop built was flight tested and delivered fuel to aircraft in-flight already.

Northrop Grumman’s KC-45A Aerial Refueling Boom System has completed 73 test flights and more than 200 flight hours. The boom completed the first in-flight fuel transfer on 29 February ‘08.

The first Northrop Grumman KC-45A tanker aircraft was built in July ‘07 and flown in September ‘07.

The Northrop Grumman KC-45A is based upon the Royal Australian Air Force KC-30B Multi-role Tanker, which has been built, flown and tested. It will be delivered on schedule to the Royal Australian Air Force in early 2009.

re: #166 Kaitian868

And no, the bid was not far better than the Boeing bid. The military construction costs and math figures counted by the Air Force were both inaccurate and had massive errors in accountability of the contract according to the GAO. Now, Boeing appealed on 117 cases or around that number which the GAO only agreed with 8 of those appeals.

And the delay is not that significant. The KC-X contract mandates the planes are supposed to be delivered in 2013/4.

The KC-45A competition was the most rigorous and transparent acquisition process in DoD history.
The USAF did not dictate the size of the proposed tanker -- size was not a criteria. Each contractor was free to propose the best solution to meet Air Force warfighter requirements.
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Acquisition John Young stated the “Air Force conducted a very open, fair and detailed competition process with good communication with the bidders.”
Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition Sue Payton declared: “As Source Selection Authority, I have determined that Northrop Grumman’s offer clearly provides the best overall value to the Government…higher mission capability, past performance, and IFARA evaluation…lowest cost.”

Nobody in the industry thinks Boeing can deliver on time.

George W Bush - buffoon or great leader?
By Sameh El-Shahat

Take the Iraq war for example. OK, so he got us into Iraq in the first place. But for Pete’s sake, he’s the leader of the world’s only superpower. He needs to take decisions, even if sometimes they have nasty consequences - which is far better than we do in Europe, where we enjoy dithering not as a means to an end, but as an end in itself.

Something had to be done about Iraq and our government was all for attacking it too. So let’s not blame G.W. for the war.

And when things did go wrong in Iraq, and there were calls to pull out, Mr Bush just followed his own counsel and doubled his bet with the Surge.

And he was right because Iraq is in a relatively better shape today than it ever was and Al Qa'eda is a shadow of its former self in that country.

This is a man who has the courage of his convictions.

Let’s not forget how Europe does wars.

Usually we wait and wait until the enemy starts attacking, then we let them win a bit, then we fight until we are tired, then we just call the US to come over to clean our mess.

That is what happened in WWI, WWII, and the Balkans.

Bush is just showing us what a bunch of dangerous ditherers we are and we hate him for it. Naturally.

Wow! A British Muslim praises Bush!

Over the whole lease deal back in 2001 which is one scandal which I'm well aware of. Again it is not justification to punish Boeing nor justification to allow our platform system to be awarded to an illegally subsidized corporation which Germany has excluded both Boeing and Lockheed Martin from competing in any of their markets. Especially when France and Spain have demonstrated cooperation problems over all sorts of platforms that Airbus produces.

And again I ask, where is Boeing's refueling boom?

I already stated this. Boeing has tested their boom back in 2007 and January 28 of this year. If you actually did a little googling over the fly-by-wire boom that Boeing is putting out, they actually successfully tested the platform on an actual 767 rather than a smaller version such as the 707.

Kennedy - he surely is not well enough to be at the Senate, is he?
So - do you have a gentleman's agreement, like we do in the British Parliament, where someone from the opposing party will not vote if someone from the main party is off ill? Its quite informal, its called 'pairing', and its usually accepted by the party whips.
If you ahve that arrangement, then McCain could simply have 'paired' with Kennedy?

Just a thought ...

I sure hope we don't have an arrangement like that. I would like to lockdown all the Dems in their homes and run thru a bunch of votes. But I think there is a minimum attendence required to pass the Senate.

Obama - vacuous egotist. Remember when Obama said wearing the flag pin after 9/11 was a "substitute for real patriotism"? He was wrong - it was an expression of genuine patriotism, and his refusal to wear it was telling. His choice to wear it now is the real substitute for patriotism (he has none).

When he was comfortable/relaxed prior to & early in the campaign, he expressed himself freely: against gun ownership, against FISA, against the flag pin, against Hillary, against the death penalty, for Trinity Church, for typically white grandma, for his Farrakhan endorsement, etc.

Now that the going's got tough, he's thrown all his friends, family and true beliefs under the table. Does anyone have any questions about this sissy's character? He has no professional accomplishments to speak of. He's surrounded himself with crazy advisors who ask "What Would Whinny the Pooh Do?" And now it should be clear to all that he has no character, no backbone, no balls. But he's probably going to win anyway. Ugh. I want to vomit.

Well, if its a real crunch vote, then its 'all hands on deck', and some parliamentarians have even been carted to vote in wheelchairs.
Others - like ministers, have been recalled from a foreign appointment, basically flying back as soon as the plane has touched down and been refuelled.
Its called a 'triple whip', and parliamentarians who disregard this will incur extreme displeasure from their party bosses.

So, it all depends, but makes for excellent entertainment in the lobby, keeping the journos on their toes.

308 EE  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 11:35:52am

The Flip-Flop King strikes again, with Change That Works For Him.

The question that voters need to ask is which is the real BHO. The one that wore a centrist mask for the 5 general election campaign months of June to October, and was unmasked for the couple of decades that he presented himself as an extreme leftist? Or the one that wore a leftist mask for a couple of decades that he wanted to appear as a left-winger, and removed his mask for the 5 general election campaign months of June to October? Was he a phony for a couple of decades, and now being real? Or was a real for a couple of decades, and now being phony?

On the theory that it is more difficult, if not almost impossible, to maintain a mask and a pretense for a couple of decades, compared with donning a mask for about five months of the general election campaign, I have to conclude that what Obama is doing with his centrist poses for these 5 months is nothing but deception to win the election, since the votes in the general election are in the center, not on the fringes.

Think about what Obama accomplished in the primary campaign. In the only contests in which there was secret balloting, he lost to Hillary overwhelmingly. Hillary won the secret-ballot popular vote, not by a slight amount, but by a landslide.

He bought the other votes with the help of bribes. The 800 superdelegates were bought. Obama's PAC donated some $698,000 to their campaigns; and likely there was the promise, or the tacit promise, of more to come if he gets the nomination, from his Amazing Money Machine. The caucuses were won by him, but these were not secret ballot elections. People voted openly by moving to one part of the room or another. They were visited in their homes by the Obama people, who may have offered them bribes of one sort or another. At the place of the caucuses, or circuses, there was a shouk, not a secret ballot election, and the Obama people were able to intimidate enough people or bribe enough people (maybe just with food or other goodies) that they overwhelmingly got the non-secret-ballot shouk delegates. You have to wonder why it is that Obama won overwhelmingly when there was no secret ballot, and the auction for votes was won by him clearly; but why Hillary defeated him soundly when there was a secret ballot and no intimidation or bribery could occur because of that secret ballot.

Now that that purchasing of the nomination is over, Obama doesn't need the extreme eft any more for the general election. What are they gonna do? Vote for McCain? And their numbers are too small to make any meaningful dent in the general election anyhow; the large numbers of votes in play are in the center.

That's why Obama has flip-flopped, and will continue to flip-flop, to the center. All that might be varied is his pace of flip-flopping. He might slow the flip-flop pace to placate the far left, but he won't give up the general election to please them.

After he takes his hand off the Bible when he is sworn in, then nobody knows which is the real Obama. I think that the real Obama is the Obama of the past couple of decades, not the masked Obama of the 5 months of the general election campaign.

FISA (0+ / 0-)
Without even reading any comments I can hear the Obama acolytes rationalizing. But bottom line, he supports eliminating separation of church and state(regardless of what he says, a government sponsored office of faith is a direct repudiation of separation), he believes in the state murdering individuals who themselves have not murdered, he agrees with the SC decision on the 2nd amendment, he voted against FISA(so he thinks the constitution and civil liberties are malleable based on the jingoism of the moment) , he is moderating his position on Iraq(see what his campaign people have said)he has not taken a leadership position on one dam progressive policy position and he doesn't agree with Universal Health Care based on so called mandates(a Republican talking point). Hope you are all happy with you Saint Obama. Me I wouldn't vote for him anymore than I'd vote for McCain. I'll just vote for my local Democrats and sit out the rest. A Modest Proposal to Obama Supporters:

If you’re upset about this, demand your money back from the Obama campaign, the DNC, the DSCC, and the DCCC. A number of Clinton supporters did this to the DNC after the Rules Committee hearing and reportedly got refunds of recent donations. So it might be worth a try, you can always re-donate it if they improve their positions. And even if they don’t give it back to you, if enough folks do this it will send a message about how unhappy you are with the party and Obama. They’re all about the $ right now, denying that to them and hounding them about it is probably your best shot at getting any leverage at this point. They’ve made it pretty clear they intend to take votes for granted. So hurt ‘em where you can. If you don’t, you’re going to continue to be disappointed (can’t say I am, I expected this from him and the Dem leadership). There are plenty of important decisions coming up for Obama, including his VP selection, so if you want him to care about what you think, you need to give him a reason to. As a Clinton supporter, he’s never going to care what I think, but you folks might be able to have some positive effect on him (and if you don’t, then that tells you something, too, doesn’t it?).

DrDave July 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm 150
Dear Senator Obama:
Your vote on FISA is a disgrace. You had a rare chance to do what most of us can only dream of: to defend the Constitution and the rule of law. Instead, you voted to cover up possibly illegal activity.
