I received a couple of emails last night asking what happened to the lists of news sites and blogs that were in our right sidebar for years. They’re still here!

Those sections have now been moved to the left sidebar, in that collection of “flippy triangle” menus. Just click the headings labeled “News/Opinion” or “Blogs” to show them.

Ah, but read closer what Durbin wants. He wants offshore drilling, and if the oil companies don't drill in areas they've already leased, they lose those leases:

However, Durbin said his support for opening new areas to drilling was contingent on setting requirements that oil and gas companies begin production within a specified time frame on acreage they have leased from the government.

UN peacekeepers caught in deadly Darfur ambush

KHARTOUM (AFP) — Dozens of suspected Janjaweed militiamen have ambushed a UN convoy in Sudan's Darfur region, killing at least one peacekeeper, wounding 20 and leaving six missing, officials said on Wednesday.

Armed with heavy weaponry and travelling in dozens of vehicles, the attackers ambushed the police and army convoy on Tuesday at Um Hakibah in North Darfur State, southwest of the peacekeeping headquarters in El Fasher.

The peacekeeping force known as UNAMID, which is severely under-equipped and under-manned, has suffered a string of attacks in the six months since it assumed control from an African Union force in Darfur, gripped by escalating insecurity and banditry.

"One is confirmed dead and six are missing," one official from UNAMID, the joint UN-African Union force, told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Is it over for America in the Middle East?

Is the American era in the Middle East over? The argument was first made by Richard Haass in an article published in 2006:

The American era in the Middle East… has ended…. It is one of history’s ironies that the first war in Iraq, a war of necessity, marked the beginning of the American era in the Middle East and the second Iraq war, a war of choice, has precipitated its end…. The United States will continue to enjoy more influence in the region than any other outside power, but its influence will be reduced from what it once was.

The theme continues to reverberate in a new article by Haass on “nonpolarity,” and in Fareed Zakaria’s book The Post-American World, which announces “the end of the Pax Americana.” (”On every dimension other than military power—industrial, financial, social, cultural—the distribution of power is shifting, moving away from U.S. dominance.”)

Has the American era ended in the Middle East? Is the obituary premature? Is it all hyperbole? Or maybe there never was an American era to begin with? MESH has asked a number of distinguished authorities for their views.

12 historians offer differing views, but the agreement is overwhelming: rumors of American demise are greatly exaggerated, and there is on perceivable alternative to US dominance in the region. Worth the read, a little historical perspective is always enlightening.

This is the same organization that I voted to condemn as a terrorist organization when an amendment was on the floor of the United States Senate. Senator Obama refused to vote, called it a provocative step. The fact is this is a terrorist organization and should have been branded as such. " -- John McCain

"Eighteen people died in the line of duty in that powder-blue shirt while I was with the department," Guidry said. "I went to each of those funerals. I wore that shirt on a Saturday, on my last day, out of respect for them."

Police brass apparently didn't appreciate the sartorial statement, which took place June 28. Young said the improper uniform complaint originated in the 2nd District. The department's Public Integrity Bureau then opened a formal investigation with about 15 minutes left in Guidry's career.

The punishment will not affect Guidry's pension or benefits, but, as it stands now, he will not receive his retired police commission and will not be accepted into the NOPD's reserve unit, for which he had applied, Young said.

Disgusting.

Obama's second language is Arabic.

Actually, the only other language he can speak with any fluency is Bahasa, the language of Indonesia. His Arabic is limited to what he learned at the madrasa there, but he can recite the Adhan (which contains the Shahada) in perfect Arabic, a fact he's proud to share.

Obama Says His Critics Haven’t Been Listening

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. — Senator Barack Obama on Tuesday forcefully addressed concerns that he had moved too quickly to the political center, acknowledging complaints from “my friends on the left” about his statements on Iraq, his approaches to evangelicals and his remarks on other issues that have alarmed some of his supporters.

“Look, let me talk about the broader issue, this whole notion that I am shifting to the center,” he told a crowd gathered at a town hall-style meeting in this Atlanta suburb. “The people who say this apparently haven’t been listening to me.”

“I am someone who is no doubt progressive,” he said, adding that he believed in universal health care and that government had a strong role to play in overseeing financial institutions and cracking down on abuses in bankruptcies and the like.

Well, I dunno - learning other people's languages does improve one's understanding of their culture.
And for some small nations it is a very important part of their identity.

Here in Wales the language is very important and has undergone a huge revival, especially with a dedicated TV channel.
It is the oldest living European language, and some of the wonderful tales, which were written down in the 12 century, go back to oral traditions kept alive since the fifth century.
So if you ask a native Welsh speaker (which I am not), they'll tell you that its English which is actually a step down for the Welsh :-)))

Moi, aussie! Je peux comprendre mieux que je peux parler.

Since there is a discussion about languages - language does some funny things, particularly when translating from one to the other. My faves, of course, are "chinglish" translations from chinese to english that are hilarious!

Here in Louisiana, there are a lot of people who say they are going to "make groceries". What that means, of course, is that they are going "to do the grocery shopping". The French word for "to make" and "to do" is the same word, and as the Cajuns moved from speaking French to speaking English, they translated the term for doing the grocery shopping as "making groceries".

I used to make groceries at da Schweggmans before it closed down!

Now thats a fair point - the same is happening in Londonistan, where men from the subcontinent forbid their women to learn English. They spend tehir lives in areas where no English is spoken - and if they ned to go to the hospital, or see someone in local government, there will be translators!
It costs us millions which could be spent far better - and yes, it makes these areas into no-go areas for British citizens.

That sort of thing should not be condoned or supported!

The French have a different understanding of what constitutes a "rude" waiter vs a "professional" waiter. The US style of a cheerful, chatty waiter is the height of rudeness in France. The French expect a waiter to be there only when you need them, otherwise they should never bother you. You signal you need for them very differently than in the US. A French waiter may act like he didn't see you waiving your arm, but he did. He just would never be so rude as to acknowledge your rude gesture.

Now in Welsh, the word for 'window' is 'ffenest' - which goes back to the Latin 'fenestra'. This is less of a surprise when one remembers that Wales was actually under Roman occupation for centuries, until one of the Welsh Romans became Emperor.

Gov. Corzine thinks that massive tax hikes are good for us in New Jersey. He supports Obama's plan to let the Bush tax cuts expire on high income earners. Yes, let's see how they define high income earners.

McCain has pledged to balance federal spending within his first term in office and is also calling for tax credits to encourage more research and development. McCain, who once opposed Bush’s tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, now argues that they should be made permanent. He supports lowering estate taxes as well as taxes on dividends and capital gains.

Obama would let those tax cuts expire, but would exempt the first $7 million from estate taxes. He supports raising the corporate tax, while boosting the earned income tax credit for the working poor and tax exemptions for low-income seniors.

Corzine conceded that some upper-income earners may face higher taxes under Obama, but said the bulk of American taxpayers would do better with Obama. That support for the middle class will help turn around the national economy, said Corzine, a former Wall Street executive.

Weasels. Lowering taxes increases productivity and the Laffer Curve bears this out.

I think WriterMom's just going a little dikey, on account of the influence of her work environment.

I was born and raised in Metairie

You're kidding! The craziest (in a good way!) bunch of folks I have ever encountered were from Metarie. We met them while on vacation in the Destin, FL area. It was the 4th of July week, and they cleaned up at the watermelon eating contest at the hotel. ROFL When you'd walk by them on the beach, they'd practically throw a beer at you and call you to come hang out with them (several families). SO much fun!

Which could be equally used to point out that women are more trivial about that which they pay attention compared to men. My wife can tell you at least three things Rachel Ray wore today, but she can't articulate three of McCain's political positions.

And I hope you can get Community! I'm sure you can. My brother lives in Vancouver, WA, and I have a "subscription" that sends them 2 lbs of community each month (their perpetual Christmas gift).

Community Dark Roast, dawlin. Necessary to my being human in the morning. My boy friend, a native Texan, has even gotten to like it!

It's explained in Obamalogic 101:

1. If you want lower gas prices, tax the oil companies.

2. If you want lower drug prices, tax the drug companies.

3. If you want more productivity, tax productivity.

4. If you want less slovenly dependent behavior, then that behavior, of course, should be subsidized.

Apparantly, Adam Smith (and every ecnomist since) got it wrong. Economics texts are being rewritten now. Is it clearer now?

Well, when one grows up with the annual Mardi Gras... actually we pretty much throw a party for any occasion. I'm glad you had fun with the Metairie Crowd...and let me tell you this too...you'd get the shirt off of their backs if you needed it.

Yma o hyd --

Touring Wales by car several years ago we noticed town names, out in the boonies, that seemed to bear a close resemblance to Old Norse.
If so, would that be Viking influence from the Real Old Days?
