German Chancellor Slams Obama's Brandenburg Gate Idea

Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 12:11:29 pm PDT

You have to marvel at the massive hubris of the Obama campaign to even suggest something like this to the German government: Merkel warns Obama not to use landmark for ‘electioneering’.

BERLIN (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has slammed a request by Barack Obama to give a speech this month before the Brandenburg Gate as inappropriate, her deputy spokesman said Wednesday.

The conservative leader said that while she would be pleased to meet the US Democratic presidential hopeful, it would be wrong for him to hold a “campaign rally” at the historic symbol of German unity.

“It is unusual to do electioneering abroad,” spokesman Thomas Steg told reporters.

“It is unusual to hold election rallies abroad. No German candidate for high office would even think of using the National Mall (in Washington) or Red Square in Moscow for a rally because it would not be seen as appropriate.”

Authorities in the capital have confirmed that Obama plans to visit Berlin on July 24 and is interested in speaking at the foot of the Brandenburg Gate.

The left-leaning government of the city-state, which has the sole right to approve such a request, has not yet made a formal decision but Mayor Klaus Wowereit gave his backing Tuesday.

Steg said Merkel had “limited understanding” for such a request and found the Obama team’s initiative “a bit odd”.

This isn’t going to do much to dispel the impression that Barack Obama is an arrogant elitist.

Obama wants to enforce the idea that his presidency will make the world like us again; thus his campaigning in Europe.

This just in from the Obama campaign office:

The site of Obama's acceptance speech has been changed again. Instead of making the address at Mile High Stadium and excluding all but 72,000 people from witnessing the transcendental moment in person, and in an effort to be more inclusive of our global family, the speech will now be given aboard the International Space Station and broadcast live on every radio and television station around the world. "We believe that this move will let the world know that Obama isn't just an American candidate, but he is also running to protect their interests," said Hugh McSnooty, Obama's press representative. "We want to tell the world 'yes we can,' and show our comrades abroad that Obama truly is a human miracle." McSnooty also noted that Obama will be transported to the ISS by his own, environmentally friendly ego power.

the more i think about it, the more i think this may work for obama. considering how many polls out there ask foreigners to pick who they want for american president and how influential the US is abroad, if pictures were shown in the US of germans or brits or french adoring Obama, and rallying in the thousands for him, i think that would influence a lot of votes. a lot of american voters would see that, see what a good impression he makes abroad and support his candidacy for president.

i say we encourage him to do more of this.

Please, educate me: In over 5,000 years of more or less recorded history, how many tyrannies have been overthrown by noble sentiments? How many genocides have been averted by reasonable discussions? How many wars have been prevented by Quakers?

As William James - no archconservative - put it a century ago, "History is a bath of blood." It's been a long time since we got badly splashed (9/11's casualties were an average day in Normandy). We're so spoiled that we've forgotten how brutal humankind can be. But our enemies are determined to remind us. Meanwhile, they practice on the innocents close at hand.

If the pen truly were mightier than the sword, the defense industry would be making ink, paper and keyboards, rather than smart bombs and body armor. A pen wielded by a talented writer may wound a target's ego, but a sword will cut off the writer's head.

Pacifists mean well. But they're a dictator's best friends. The man who won't fight for justice abets the terrorist, the tyrant and the concentration-camp guard.

All decent men want peace. But wise men know that not all men are decent.
The use of the pen is an indulgence we can afford only because better men and women grip the sword on our behalf.

Along those lines found this funny.
Every year, English teachers from across the USA can submit their collections of actual analogies, similes and metaphors found in high school essays in order to have them published and sent out for the amusement of other teachers across the country. Recent winners:

1. Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.

2. His thoughts tumbled around inside his head, making and breaking alliances like underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

3. He spoke with the kind of wisdom that can only come from experience, like a guy who goes blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country speaking at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar eclipse without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

4. She grew on him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was room-temperature Canadian beef.

5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like the sound a dog makes just before it throws up.

6. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.

8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had disintegrated because of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a surcharge at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.

9. The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn't.

10. From the attic came an unearthly howl. The whole scene had an eerie, surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another city and Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

11. Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

12. Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling west at 55 mph, the other from Topeka at 4:19 p.m. traveling east at a speed of 35 mph.

13. They lived in a typical suburban neighborhood with picket fences that resembled Nancy Kerrigan's teeth.

14. John and Mary had never met. They were like two hummingbirds who had also never met.

15. He fell for her like his heart was a mob informant, and she was the East River.

16. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like a steel trap, only one that had been left out so long, it had rusted shut.

17. The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

18. The young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.

19. He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.

20. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like, whatever

As a German I find it deeply inappropriate. Only sitting U.S. Presidents have spoken at the Brandenburg Gate like J.F.K. and Ronald Reagan.

J.F.K. actually did nothing in 1961 when the wall was built, but Reagan helped to bring it down.

What has Obama done?

Presidential candidates should not campaign abroad because it makes the hosting country appear taking sides which is not appropriate. Certainly visits are ok and welcome, campaigns are not.

Will he give the entire speech in flawless German? After his stupid comments today in Georgia, where he admonished Americans that they should be 'embarrassed' that their children are not multi-lingual, one wonders if the Obamessiah will regale the Europeans in their own tongue(s).

My reply to the Obamessiah, in Serbian:

when I think about it, I would have thought that his true "blue collar man of the people" campaign would have really pushed him coming to MT and being amongst the peoples but I havent seen anything on line or in the national media about it. He very well could have been completely ignored by the locals. The peoples aren't too thrilled with politicians co-opting their parade and the pipes and drums from Edmonton. Some lowly hotel clerk probably told him to wait his turn, the hotel was full and she only had two hands.

re: #209 KSK

As a German I find it deeply inappropriate. Only sitting U.S. Presidents have spoken at the Brandenburg Gate like J.F.K. and Ronald Reagan.

J.F.K. actually did nothing in 1961 when the wall was built, but Reagan helped to bring it down.

What has Obama done?

Presidential candidates should not campaign abroad because it makes the hosting country appear taking sides which is not appropriate. Certainly visits are ok and welcome, campaigns are not.

How old was Barak in 1961?

If he was a child, the history of the Wall is meaningless.

The Brandenburg Gate has much WW2-era symbolism, and we know how WW2 ended. The Russian (and Ukranian, and other) peoples paid much blood to achieve its conquest.

The gate also is symbolic of the Cold War, and we also know how it turned out. Very many people ruled by Marxism and its derivatives suffered and died, until Marxism and Co. crumbled. Capitalism and Democracy won.

Why would any educated Marxist, or at least one historically aware and politically astute, want to make a speech with the Brandenburg Gate as a backdrop? But then the retort comes: "Obama ...".

Turkish coup plot awakens fear of violent nationalism

In an extraordinary raid which led to the arrests of 21 people allegedly tied to Ergenekon, a shadowy nationalist grouping, police uncovered documents that revealed plans for a sustained campaign of terror and intimidation against the Islamist government due to begin this week. A perfect storm of disruption was to be whipped up, beginning with a groundswell of popular protest, followed by a wave of assassinations and bombings, culminating in an economic crisis and army coup. Turkey's moderate Islamist government would be ousted in favour of a right-wing secular dictatorship. The documents appeared to identify a 30-member assassination squad targeting judges and other prominent figures.

Looking at history without ideological blindfolds shows that Germany typically fared better with Republican U.S. Presidents.

Kennedy (D): Did nothing to stop the wall, almost blundered into WW3, held a feelgood speech as a Berliner that didn't change anything.

Lyndon B. Johnson (D): Tried everything to drag Germany into Vietnam which was a constitutional no no.

Jimmy Carter (D): Just ask Helmut Schnidt what he thinks about Carter.

Ronald Reagan (R): "Tear down that wall"... and it worked

George H.W. Bush (R): The best friend, helped Germany's reunification which France and Britain would rather have jeopardized.

Bill Clinton (D): Behind the curtains he was far more irritating than seen today. Yugoslavia blunder...

George W. Bush (R): Made it easy for Germany not to get involved in Iraq (not that there would have been anything wrong with that)

Hannity: Jesse Jackson Slams Obama on Tape

Radio host Sean Hannity just revealed that FOX News is in possession of an exclusive tape of Reverend Jesse Jackson, recorded in a studio when he thought the microphone was off, slamming Barack Hussein Obama for “talking down to black people” on matters of faith among other issues.

Hannity also intimated that Jackson says he wants to “rip Obama’s nuts off” on the tape. Hannity would not say “nuts,” but based on his description (portion of the male anatomy beginning with an “n”) I believe that’s the word he was going for.

Hannity says the tape will be played in its entirety on tonight’s Hannity and Colmes.

Dipthongs? Is that like some kind of underware?

Very sophisticated and European, everyone who is anyone will be displaying them next year, along with a frisson of umlauts. These are deeply unserious people playing with fire at an especially wrong time. Clinton after the Wall came down could get away with offering "a holiday from history" but Obama can't even put that sunny face on fecklessness. He just offers a sophisticated paint job on surrender.

Of course! It was a dramatic line, well delivered and positively accepted. Certainly everyone in the crowd understood him. I'm a JFK fan.

Gramatically, however, it was not what you'd shoot for. You can get away with this in high moments of rhetoric. In English, for example, if someone conversationally said a line as twisted as, "To be or not to be, that is the question," you would scratch your head and try to exit the conversation as soon as possible. As part of Hamlet, however, it is brilliance.

Yes indeed: In December 1965 LDJ actually bullied then chancellor Erhard threatening him with drastically reducing U.S. troops in Germany should Germany not send troops to Vietnam.

Johnson knew fully well that the German Basic Law did not allow for troop deployments out of NATO area.

Erhard finally compromised and sent the German hospital ship "Helgoland" which was moored in the harbors of Saigon and Da Nang for more than 4 years. At this time it was the best hospital in Vietnam.

Wanting to do a celebrity tour abroad is standard democrat practice.

This Brandenburg Gate Speech CelebrityFest idea has to come from on-high in the dem political machinery, since someone contacted German diplomats.

Kerry-Edwards 2004 theme was "Stronger at Home, Respected Abroad" or something like it. (fact check please)

Kerry reputedly met with foreign representatives in New York City restaurants, the "World Can't Wait" crowd who hated Bush, and told Kerry he was respected in the world!

Kerry's sister worked hard around the Globe to get Americans Abroad to vote Kerry.

The pen is mightier than the sword. Without good ideas we'd not have a republic. Without freedom we'd not have nearly the military might we have. Without a John Locke we'd not be free. Freedom makes prosperity and strength possible, but the ideas for freedom come first.

However, there are times when you have to use the sword to fight those who would take your life, and this is where pacifists fail, perhaps unintentionally, but I have my doubts.

The intriguing part of this unbelievable request is that the world's Leftists always decry America's "hyper-power" status. They wish we didn't act like the only country that mattered in this world.

But I don't hear one solitary Leftist exclaiming how arrogant Obama is, to presume to use a foreign country's landmark to campaign OUTSIDE his country.

To me, this means they're not altogether unamenable to the idea. They just want the right guy to lead the world. Their guy.

re: #477 Occasional Reader

As I understand it - and no, I do not speak German, but this is what I recall from people who do - while it's not common to put "ein" in front of a noun referring to place of origin, it can be done for emphasis. Which is what JFK intended. And, if you actually listen to the line, and the crowd's reaction, it's not exactly like he was greeted with howls of laughter at this (alleged) gaffe. The crowd was ecstatic.

My best friend in college's mom WAS a Berliner, and her parents took her to that speech when she was a little girl. They were in the back, and she said while the crowd cheered, there were a lot of people back in the back who, not hearing the context as it was translated, just looked at one another, puzzled and amused.

Analogy: if you hear the bulk of a speech in German, and then the speaker says, with a German accent, "I am a hamburger!" well, I don't care that you're in Hamburg at the time, you're going to have a mental fart.

577 FrogMarch  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 3:53:25pm

German Chancellor Angela Merkel may have said he can not give a stump speech, or at least advised against it. So what is to stop him from giving it anyway, Polesi was told not to talk to Syria but she did anyway, Dem's do as they want and never get called on it. Besides he will just say he was "Taken out of context", standard answer to anything they get caught saying or doing they know is wrong

Obama needs to learn history. Kennedy gave his speech at the Rathaus Shoneberg. A Berliner is also a donut. The Brandenberg gate was also in East Berlin, so giving a speech at the foot of it would be very inappropiate I would think.

DSM Criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder

IMHO, Obama scores 9 out of 9.

This totally hits the nail on the proverbial head, and it's not about just this latest story. Remember the bit about stopping the oceans from rising? (Seriously!) And how - within the last week - his campaign announced he's going to give his acceptance speech in a stadium with 70,000 cheering onlookers, instead of simply making a speech at the convention proper. He is totally spiraling out of control with this self-admiration.

If we're lucky, McCain will start poking fun at him about this craziness, and OHB will have a major fit of narcissistic rage at just the right time.

The German leader has been funnier before. And she´s just missing the opportunity to debate Obama on missile defense:

The Bush Administration has also done a poor job of consulting its NATO allies about the deployment of a missile defense system that has major implications for all of them.

Is that so, Frau Merkel?
