Obama, Hipocrita

Wed, Jul 9, 2008 at 3:02:40 pm PDT

You’ve probably heard about Barack Obama admonishing Americans to learn Spanish.

I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, we need to have English only. They want to pass a law, we just, we want English only... Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English, I agree with this. But understand this, instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English, they’ll learn English, you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.

Imagine my surprise to learn that Obama himself does not speak Spanish.

The candidates appeared separately before the League of United Latin American Citizens at the Washington Hilton, making for a fun-filled afternoon of identity politics. The McCain campaign stocked the audience with posters announcing “Estamos Unidos McCain,” while the Obama campaign supplied stickers and posters saying, “Latinos for Obama.”

“Sí, se puede!” Obama, who doesn’t speak Spanish, said as he arrived on stage.

(Hat tip: Abe Greenwald.)

Sí, se puede (Spanish for "Yes, It can be done!" or "Yes, you (formal) can do it!") is the motto of the United Farm Workers. In 1972, during Cesar Chavez's 25 day fast in Phoenix, Arizona, he and UFW's co-founder, Dolores Huerta came up with the slogan.[1]

The phrase has been widely adopted by other labor unions and civil rights organizations and drew widespread political and media attention as a rallying cry during the 2006 U.S. immigration reform protests.

Figures.

I had my children learn Spanish in High School and college, since it is very important to learn it, living in Southern California. But it should not be mandatory, and those speaking Spanish as a native language ought to learn English if they ever expect to succeed.

And Obama can keep pandering to the illegal Hispanic aliens all he wants. It's just another nail in his political coffin.

It will not make a difference to his hard voter base what he says or does, period. They are programmed to vote for him, they have been programmed to vote for him from birth. White guilt, rich guilt and race quotas have been taught to them since birth. They are not going to change their minds. And this includes most of the MSM.

I do however have some hope. My local seriously left leaning paper is actually starting to run some "non positive" articles about the Obaminator. I would have bet a pay check that they would never have done that. With that, there is hope that some in the LLL crowd might actually listen and be swayed. That is the people we need to work on. And those people are in your local community, not here in LGF.

I'm all in favor of people learning new languages. However,

the only reasons I can see for teaching everyone, at least all the children, Spanish are,

the Spanish speakers are not going to assimilate into the existing culture in any meaningful way and are not expected to, and/or

the US borders are going to be left open.

Boy, I hope you're wrong about that. If the elites believe we will have a permanent Spanish speaking subculture of tens of millions, then they are insane. That is a guaranteed path to a civil war.

The real issue is, is it still possible to restrict official communications from government to English? Or, must government forever print ballots (and everyting else) in Spanish, and (to be fair) all the other 300 or so languages that may be spoken by someone, somewhere, at some time in the USA?

Spanish pushing is exclusively an attempt to make USA a bi-lingual English-Spanish country. The schools as in the NEA are full bore trying to make that happen. We have a lot of kids in a lot of grades right now in shcools so we know what we are talking about.
OUr kids are bi-lingual in French English thanks to French school education. Now, after a big long explanation at school as to why Americans should learn Spanish, and why French was being dropped, we looked the educator facilitator in the eye and dropped the PC bomb, "But we can't use Spanish in Africa."
Jaw dropped and deer in the headlights look.
Damn straight. What kind of ignorant educator thinks French is only used in France? Hah! Gotcha! How about HALF of AFRICA? Didn't study Africa in school or something? What are they RACIST or something? Don't think Americans should learn French so they can get a head start in Africa?
SPanish is very nice IF one wants to go to Latin America, but it don't travel well beyond that. With Spanish one is STUCK in Latin America. French is actually more versitile than Spanish worldwide. Likewise, the next favorite Leftie educator facilitator language to push is CHINESE, which is one of the most territorially bound languages on the planet. It's great if you are a Chinaphile or have to work there, but that's it. It's lack of alphabet cripples it for general use. Well, Swahili is a regional language, spoken in East AFrica and part of DRC Congo, how about that? It only has four irregular verbs, it'd be easy to teach... er facilitate.

POP quiz for all: WHy is Latin America called Latin America and not HISPANIC America?

We can count on ONE hand the number of Spanish-speakers in AFrica after TWENTY years there. One hand. THey don't go there as a rule. Don't ask us why.
Wanna get a start in Africa? Here are the four most useable languages apart from regional local languages:
English
French
Arabic
PORTUGUESE!

Why isn't it Hispanic America? HALF of South America is LUZOPHONE! Portuguese. Brazil! Hey! We think Brazilians are a LOT more laid back than Hispanics and they have lots of trade ties to Africa. Portuguese is useful in Mozambique and Angola, and Cape Verde. Just ask Teresa Heinz Kerry. Why not say Americans should learn Portuguese? It IS part of the AMERICAS and it is ALSO spoken in Europe and Africa. Hmm? More bang for the buck?

To demand that all Americans should learn Spanish is ethnically and culturally totalitarian. Americans go ALL over the globe and learn the langauges they need for the areas they work with. The US Peace Corps has an oustanding language program, US volunteers learn all sorts of tribal languages. Europeans know their local langauges cause they HAVE to, but Americans are better at picking up non-European languages - they work at it to be able to speak in local dialects in obscure places.
So, Dear Obama, do you know your father's tongue, Luo? Or Swahili, one of the two national langauges of Kenya? Or ... any Indonesian languages? What's his excuse? he lived there.

So, everybody have some ammunition now to defend against the Liberal Left guilt-trip?
Enjoy. Let's demand that if Americans should be bi-lingual, why don't we really get radical and demand Apache or Navajo? Wouldn't that be cool to have Apache on your resume under "languages spoken:"

My grandparents learned English. So can Mexicans.

My maternal grandfather came to the United States fro Russia at age four, grew up to become a Republican, an Elk (his brother was a Mason), and the biggest Fourth of July fireworks manufacturer in the Midwest.

He looked and sounded like Ike.

My paternal grandmother came to this country as a thirteen year old refugee from pogroms (with her slightly older sister, and no one else), after their family was wiped out by the Cossacks. She never learned to read and write English very well.

My paternal grandfather was an adult when he arrived. His much older brothers came a generation earlier. One, William Morris, invented show business. The other became governor of Idaho. My grandfather died a gas meter reader, but was literate in nine languages. His sons became, respectively, an optometrist and a newspaper publisher.

All of my cousins have advanced degrees, or married advanced degrees. Many are very famous.

Mexicans can learn to speak English.

You reckon his lack of ability to speak Spanish is why J.Jackson wants to take Obama and "cut his n**s out"?

[Link: www.drudgereport.com...]

I liked this part of Jackson's statement. It shows us who liberals like Jackson think ought to run our lives.:

My appeal was for the moral content of his message to not only deal with the personal and moral responsibility of black males, but to deal with the collective moral responsibility of government and the public policy which would be a corrective action for the lack of good choices that often led to their irresponsibility.

Yep. You idiots out there can't make good choices. The government must do it for you. And only liberals are smart enough to know the difference between good choices and bad ones. Marxism is alive and well in the Democrat Party.

GWB was a very good Governor...and got rocked out of his saddle on 9/11...hell who wouldn't. He's had to face problems no other President has ever had to face and for the most part he's held his own.

I hate to watch him give news conferences or speak in public...just because he's a sitting duck and doesn't do either well. Kind of reminds me as Sad-Sack like at times.
But, he's a good man, something they can't take away from him.

I can say shark underwater. Its easy, take the regulator out of your mouth when scuba diving and the wife is drifiting toward the reef where the shark is feeding, shout "shark" loudly and she turns around, looks and heads away from said shark, put the regulator back in your mouth, push the purge button and breath. It works.

In America Spanish is the language of failure. It's the language of dish washers, floor scrubbers, mushroom farm pickers, toilet cleaners. landscapers' helpers. Spanish is the language which is dividing our country. Why should American children (who often do not speak cogent English themselves, AKA Ebonics) learn a language which will enable them to get jobs washing out toilets and picking produce? Better to teach them English, the language of success. English is the language of Airline pilots, air traffic controllers, scientists, mathematicians, computer engineers, researchers, politicians. It's the language used to communicate by EU politicians. Albanians learn English, Germans learn English, Japanese learn English. These are peoples who realize English is the language of success, the international language, the language of diplomacy. The only people who are so stupid as to be unable / unwilling to learn English are the south of the border illegals who choke our cities and are killing our hospitals by never paying. WTF?

I could see the logic of giving preference to a foster home in which at least one adult is from Ecuador -- so that the kid can get some of the positive elements of her native Ecuadoran culture reinforced in the foster home.

But the idea that a Spanish-speaking foster parent from ANYWHERE is preferable to an English-speaking foster parent, when the child is alrady bilingual, is a toxic blend of the "Aztlan" Latino-supremacist mindset plus liberally-guilty gringo enabler-ism.

Wow.
A "recommended" diary about Hillary on kos

snip-

NOTE: I am an Internet Adviser to Hillary

I wanted to share a statement Hillary just put out on her FISA 'no' vote:

"One of the great challenges before us as a nation is remaining steadfast in our fight against terrorism while preserving our commitment to the rule of law and individual liberty. As a senator from New York on September 11, I understand the importance of taking any and all necessary steps to protect our nation from those who would do us harm. I believe strongly that we must modernize our surveillance laws in order to provide intelligence professionals the tools needed to fight terrorism and make our country more secure. However, any surveillance program must contain safeguards to protect the rights of Americans against abuse, and to preserve clear lines of oversight and accountability over this administration. I applaud the efforts of my colleagues who negotiated this legislation, and I respect my colleagues who reached a different conclusion on today's vote. I do so because this is a difficult issue. Nonetheless, I could not vote for the legislation in its current form.

Take THAT obambi LOL

re: #386 Throbert McGee

I could see the logic of giving preference to a foster home in which at least one adult is from Ecuador -- so that the kid can get some of the positive elements of her native Ecuadoran culture reinforced in the foster home.

But the idea that a Spanish-speaking foster parent from ANYWHERE is preferable to an English-speaking foster parent, when the child is alrady bilingual, is a toxic blend of the "Aztlan" Latino-supremacist mindset plus liberally-guilty gringo enabler-ism.

Exactly. This is sick. I am ready to explode.

I took Spanish in school for four years. Got to understand it pretty well. Years later it helped me teach myself Italian. That's all fine, but if you come to the USA, learn English!

I lived in a litte town in Germany for three years - the only American in town most of the time. I once asked my landlady why she didn't speak English with me (she did know some and her grandson spoke English so well he was forbidden to speak English until his German improved). This is what Lydia said to me: "You are in my country. Here you are a guest. You will learn my language and follow our ways. When I come to you in America, then I will speak English and follow your customs." Wise words from a wise woman.

re: #367 Zach_the_Lizard

I am not sure that's really "Spanish." I've taken some Spanish, and it looks like it may be grammatically incorrect.

Hacer lo que digo no lo que lo hago.

Literally:

To do what I say not what I do (it). Hacer is an infinitive ("to do") and I think there may be an extra "lo" (it) at the end.

I got the gist of it. It's how I get by, reading the ads in Spanish on the NYC subway cars. I don't know enough to discern proper grammar and what not. I got "as I say/speak, not as I do"

Anyway, of the languages I speak (Albanian, Italian, French, and English), French was the only one taught and learned at school, and the one I am the least proficient in. This bull over public education and learning foreign languages is absolutely stupid. If you want your kids to learn a language, put them in front of the TV with programs in that language. They'll be fluent in no time.

Eventually, my husband will probably go to an Asian country or Spain, Italy, or Crete; I am looking forward to learning Italian or Greek (hoping for that one!), or refreshing my Spanish when we get there.

If I go to another country where they speak a different language, I'll damn well learn that language. If someone from another country comes to my country, I damn well expect the same courtesy from them, or at least a good sense of humor as we stumble through understanding one another.

Isn't it awfully US-centric to only expect Americans to learn Spanish, not Mexicans to learn English? or is that just our innate superiority? /sarc of course.

Reports on A'abad's organizational affiliation were contradictory. According to intelligence information gathered in Jenin, he belonged to the Fatah's Abu-Amar Brigades, but other sources claimed he was a Hamas member. Eyewitnesses reported he had been shot in the foot, so residents of his village were surprised to hear of his death.

It is nauseating! In my old country, parents with joint income of less than $300/month would pay for expensive private tutors for their children to learn English. OT - and sorry if this has already been posted (I just put it in the spinoff links above) but:

Ethics Complaints Filed Over Obama Mortgage Rate
The conservative public-interest group Judicial Watch today filed ethics complaints alleging that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, broke the rules when he accepted a discounted deal on a 2005 mortgage loan, as first reported last week by The Post.

"Americans ought to be suspicious when a United States Senator such as Barack Obama, obtains a sweetheart mortgage deal," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement. "We have serious concerns that Senator Obama's mortgage may have violated the law and Senate ethics rules." The group filed separate complaints with the Federal Election Commission and the U.S. Senate Ethics Committee.

The Post's Joe Stephens reported that in 2005, Obama, then a freshman Democratic senator, bought a $1.65 million restored Georgian mansion in an upscale Chicago neighborhood. To finance the purchase, he secured the loan, for $1.32 million, which was locked in at an interest rate of 5.625 percent on the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, below the average for such loans at the time in Chicago.
The complaint was filed yesterday afternoon.

There was once a very elderly Chinese woman next door to me. She had been here for at least 30 or more years. Couldn't even say 'hello' in English. To me, that is simply inconceivable given my natural curiosity to learn things and to thrive.

Were there perhaps other Chinese nearby? I can't even begin to imagine spending three years in a tiny little German village where not a single soul other than myself spoke (or admitted that they did at any rate) English without learning German. Back then I would not even have understood the TV. Couldn't have laid hands on an English newspaper. Gone to the movies.

There's nothing wrong with speaking or learning the Spanish language. The problem arises when it's mandatory to do so at the expense of the English language.

You are on the right track, but I would rephrase the "problem" a little:

There's nothing wrong with speaking or learning the Spanish language. The problem arises when it's mandatory to do so at the expense of the English language ESL-learning by Hispanic immigrants.

I don't think that American English itself is under the slightest threat from Spanish-speaking immigrants. My objection to "bilingualism" is that it can it be an obstacle/disincentive for Hispanic immigrants to acquire English as a Second Language. In other words, my concern is not that American English as a whole will be harmed by making "bilingual" concessions to Spanish-speaking immigrants; rather, that the quality of THEIR English will tend to suffer, if we make it too convenient for them to keep using Spanish in the USA.

And in my limited experience as an ESL teacher, actual Hispanic immigrants understand this point perfectly well -- as do immigrants from Vietnam and Ukraine and Haiti and elsewhere. The twin demons pushing Spanish/English bilingualism are (a) second- or third-generation Latino-Americans who feel embarrassed at not being able to speak fluently en español with their (grand)parents; and (b) liberal Europhile-American elitists who feel embarrassed that their white-trash extended family at Thanksgiving dinner can't manage two or three or four languages like the Belgians and Swiss.

re: #433 medaura18586

I got the gist of it. It's how I get by, reading the ads in Spanish on the NYC subway cars. I don't know enough to discern proper grammar and what not. I got "as I say/speak, not as I do"

Anyway, of the languages I speak (Albanian, Italian, French, and English), French was the only one taught and learned at school, and the one I am the least proficient in. This bull over public education and learning foreign languages is absolutely stupid. If you want your kids to learn a language, put them in front of the TV with programs in that language. They'll be fluent in no time.

That is because what we teach in American high schools as a foreign language is foreign even to those who are native speakers of the language in question.

I once had a neighbor who had moved from Puerto Rico to teach in a school that had suddenly found themselves with a large Spanish speaking population. Her son was enrolled at the local high school along with my girls. He came home from his first day in tears and when I asked him what was wrong he says to me "I thought I was going to have to learn one foregin language - but I have to learn TWO." They had enrolled him in "Spanish" thinking it would be a natural fit for him. Definitely not.

I think you clarified that perfectly. Needless-to-say, I agree (I also used to be an English language instructor during my gap year, mostly in Asia and South America).

The cultural climate when political correctness took hold in the USA (in the late 70s) made it possible to be ashamed to be an English-speaking American. It smacked of superiority, and shame of your past.

In previous generations, kids were ACTIVELY encouraged not to speak a lick of their parents' Old World languages, for the sole purpose of being more American. This is a point of pride with many Americans.

So you have a slight resentment factor going on, because like many people have said, it's not the learning of a foreign language that is the problem, but the why namely, why why why only Spanish?

It's interesting witnessing this phenomenon here in South Florida. The Cuban-Americans were virulently pro-bilingualism when they came down here. They fought for bilingual signage, and indeed, we have that here. They insisted on Spanish being spoken exclusively at home.

But as the Cubans are in their 4th generation of exiles, this generation of kids don't speak Spanish at all well, and in fact, there is a slight embarassment factor about it.

Eventually, English will out. It always does.

530 Throbert McGee  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 4:59:12pm

On the Spanish/English bilingualism topic: My parents have retired out to Arizona (Tucson area), and my Catholic mom informs me that the parish she has joined offers the following language options for Mass:

• All-English
• All-Spanish
• English service with only the hymns (and certain "standardized" prayers, like the Our Father) in Spanish

I say, that's all well and good, but what's missing here? Ah, yes, a Spanish service with hymns and prayers in English -- because that option should also be on the menu if the parish is truly doing bilingual Masses to help immigrants transition to English, and not in service of political correctness.

From the standpoint of a native-Spanish ESL learner, an English worship service with Spanish songs/prayers and a Spanish worship service with English songs/prayers are both good opportunities for ESL practice -- but they don't both reinforce exactly the same language skills while meeting exactly the same spiritual needs, so ideally both should be available.

Well, I actually grew up and went to school in Albania. I don't think the version of the language taught had anything to do with it. It's that the classroom is the last place to learn a foreign language. You need to immerse yourself in the context/culture and learn it by yourself. I myself just learned English watching movies with hearing-impaired subtitles on.

As per your story, a lot of former colonies of Spain have weird dialects of Spanish. Mexican Spanish differs from the Spanish they speak in Spain. I wonder which kind of Spanish Barack wants us all to learn.

537 Tigger2005  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 5:07:10pm

My best friend is from Venezuela and works as a Spanish translator. His wife teaches high school Spanish. Yet I only know a few isolated Spanish words, and forget about stringing together a sentence. I took French in high school and can hardly remember any of it.

But then, it took me long enough just to become fluent in English. I've had neurosensory hearing loss since birth, and for a while I was put in lower English and reading levels in grade school until something finally "clicked" for me and I became a very good (and fast) reader and writer of English.

Since my youth my hearing and comprehension have only become worse (although fortunately I can still hear pretty well with hearing aids). But making sense of foreign languages is just about impossible for me. I can hardly pick out individual words, much less grasp their proper pronunciation. I guess with massive effort, I COULD learn enough of a foreign language to maybe get by, if everyone I spoke to was very patient and spoke slowly and clearly.

"The War is Over" was one of Ochs' late songs against the Vietnam War. Something about your post on the Obama site recalled the rhythm of the song--not that I'm suggesting in any way that you endorse his views. Here are the lyrics:

Silent Soldiers on a silver screen
Framed in fantasies and drugged in dreams
Unpaid actors of the mystery
The mad director knows that freedom will not make you free
And what's this got to do with me?
I declare the war is over
It's over, it's over

Drums are drizzling on a grainy sand
Fading rhythms of a fading land
Prove your courage in the proud parade
Trust your leaders where mistakes are almost never made
And they're afraid that I'm afraid
I'm afraid the war is over
It's over, it's over

Angry artists painting angry signs
Use their vision just to blind the blind
Poisoned players of a grisly game
One is guilty and the other gets the point to blame
Pardon me if I refrain
I declare the war is over
It's over, it's over

So do your duty, boys, and join with pride
Serve your country in her suicide
Find the flags so you can wave goodbye
But just before the end even treason might be worth a try
This country is to young to die
I declare the war is over
It's over, it's over

One-legged veterans will greet the dawn
And they're whistling marches as they mow the lawn
And the gargoyles only sit and grieve
The gypsy fortune teller told me that we'd been deceived
You only are what you believe
I believe the war is over
It's over, it's over

Kinda cool for a commie. But did he have neato hidden messages like me.

When I had to live in Central American for a few years, I made a major effort to learn Spanish to accommodate my new host country. After a few years, I became very proficient at it to the point where many didn't even know I was a gringo. They usually thought I was Colombian or Cuban.

When I returned back to the United States in late 1990's, I was surrounded by Spanish speakers where previously I had not noticed. I had frequent contact to Spanish speaking immigrants. I learned that I would never attempt to communicate with them by initially speaking spanish. I would always use English first. I would only reply back in Spanish when I discovered that they were trying but having difficulty. I believed that they should speak English first just as I did in Central America. It was not hard and shows much respect. Our own government is disrespecting it's own citizens by forcing bi-lingual services before attempting to do business in English first.

Senor Obama, el es un fraude.

(Merci beaucoup my ass. How many languages does he speak?)

550 mattm  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 5:54:48pm

If you want to learn a second language to help with you career, say dealing with international customers for a major company that is fine. But to have a presidential candidate say that every American needs to learn Spanish, well that is saying something about his beliefs about America.

This fool is too much, lets see if he will go to Philly, PA and order a Philly Cheese steak at Gino's, because they only take orders in ENGLISH. I will not learn Spanish, but I will learn another language so when i am asked something in spanish I can answer, back in that languge.

German works remarkably well for me. It caused many blank looks and slow walkaways in Co.

Puerto Rican's do not speak Spanish. When I was in Junior High they taught Cubano, the commercial language of the Caribbean. Puertoricans failed. There are many varieties of Spanish.

Over 300 according to my old Spanish teacher, who taught us a mere three of them. What becomes truly amusing is when you start comparing Puerto Rican Spanish with Mexican Spanish, as more than a few perfectly good, ordinary words in either one are downright dirty/nasty/wash your mouth out with soap in the other.

The only reason that Obama doesn't want us to drill in ANWAR is because he is saving the land for schools to teach us Spanish.

My wife studied English for 4 years before immigrating to America. English is her third fluent language. The bad thing is, she speaks better english than most Americans.

I studied German for 1 year before I went to Germany on vacation. The only bad part was, when people realized I was American, they wanted to speak English to me for practice.

561 gbl  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 6:28:36pm

Obama, without he aide of a teleprompter, again shows his total lack of rational thought. There is a big reason why many Europeans speak English, and perhaps another language other than their native tongue -- commerce. If Obama, really wanted to prepare us for the future, he could have suggested increasing Chinese language programs in schools. Most foreign countries don't push learning Spanish, but learning English as a second language. This guy really has no clue!

Exactly what I run into in Asia or travels to the EU and Russia. I don't hear many wanting to practice their Spanish with me.

564 yesandno  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 6:39:08pm

Well....this will all come home to roost at the Brandenburg Gates, no doubt, when the swift teleprompter reader of all that is German will anounce to the world why he is so much better then the people he wants to lead.

Second languages are great. We should all want to learn something new and different. But, in Europe you have only to drive a few hours and you are in the middle of another language, another culture. They have to know more languages to deal with the neighborhood. Here, you can go 3000 miles from sea to shining sea and not have to know another language. 3000 miles from France would take you to what was Eastern Europe...different layout, different cultures, different story.

We are not all ugly Americans. If we go to France and cannot speak the language does that mean we are ugly Americans? If we go to France and shower every day does that make us an ugly American? And if we go to France and toast marshmallows as the Citron burns, does that make us an ugly American?

What a piece of work.

I've distilled all of the comments here... OK, here it is. Just cut and paste: Obama is full of sh*t!

571 Former Belgian  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 9:06:48pm

Typical Obama-Nada --- the sort of "New Class" condescending liberal that has driven quite a few mainstream liberals into the arms of neoconservatism.

This is probably the only issue where I've ever agreed with Flemish (and Walloon) nationalists: anybody who doesn't want to learn the national language is welcome to leave.

Belgians of both major language groups routinely learn the other national language in school from fifth grade (and speak it with variable fluency). But a French-speaker living in Flanders who refuses to speak Dutch will be told in no uncertain terms to move back to Wallony. As for a Fleming living in Wallony, no baker will sell him a loaf of bread if he doesn't ask for it in French.

I'm fluent in half a dozen languages (English is my third language) and can fake Spanish well enough to make myself understood when I'm in Spain or in South America. But I've always refused point blank to use this in the USA, and have told more than one business or store manager that if they could not be bothered to hire employees that spoke English I would not be bothered to do business with them.

To me and pretty much any expat Belgian with an IQ above room temperature, speaking the (de jure or de facto) national language where you live is a matter of honor, and refusal to do so personally offensive.

Now consider my permanent home, Israel. Large Russian-speaking legal immigrant population. Russian (and related Slavic languages) a major language group worldwide. It's quite normal for ATMs, for example, to offer Hebrew/English/Russian/Arabic as language options (note that this represents four different writing systems as well as four languages!). But the mere suggestion that the general population should learn Russian to accommodate that group would be met by ridicule at best and an intifada at worst. Maybe the moreso because all the OTHER first-generation immigrants themselves had to learn Hebrew rather than being accommodated in Romanian, German, Polish, dialects of Arabic, Farsi,... Pretty much the only that can get away with anything in this regard are Anglos, as pretty much every Israeli THINKS he speaks English ;-)

572 wiffersnapper  Wed, Jul 9, 2008 10:16:50pm

The Messiah wants YOU to speak in tongues that he cannot speak.

Wonder how much this will affect his image? Oh wait, we all know the answer to that one.

re: #530 Throbert McGee

There's of course always the option of going back to the "one size fits all" Latin mass?

I was so sure that Hebrew would be required for the international Jewish conspiracy to succeed. I don't think our little cabal will make it. (tear drop... and /sarc) After 25 years in Israel, my Hebrew still sucks.

re: #228 pre-Boomer Marine brat

I'd noticed those. "Point", as in score-keeping?

Ok, let me enlighten you to the best of my abilities:

puta = whore (both figurative and literal)

zorra = bitch (figurative)

perra = bitch (also figurative, but mostly literal)

punta = tip (as in the tip of a pencil)

punto = point (score-keeping), stitch (suture)

guarra = skank (also zorrón, pendón, putón)

Me cago en tu puta madre, cabronazo hijo de la gran puta... (or any other variation thereof) = something you don't want to tell a Spanish policeman.

BTW, if you're interested in Spanish curses (as opposed to Spanish courses) you should watch The Adventures of Ford Fairlane dubbed into European Spanish.

Pretty much like the point of a pin, 'dot' like dot com or a peninsula , but yeah, it can mean score.

Actually the sharp end of an object (or even the penis) and the tip of a peninsula translates as "punta".

re: #255 wanumba

Why isn't it Hispanic America? HALF of South America is LUZOPHONE! Portuguese. Brazil! Hey! We think Brazilians are a LOT more laid back than Hispanics and they have lots of trade ties to Africa. Portuguese is useful in Mozambique and Angola, and Cape Verde. Just ask Teresa Heinz Kerry. Why not say Americans should learn Portuguese? It IS part of the AMERICAS and it is ALSO spoken in Europe and Africa. Hmm? More bang for the buck?

Actually, Spanish has a significant lead over Portuguese in terms of native speakers. And the number of people who choose to learn Spanish as a second language is growing daily. Portuguese in America is mostly confined to Brasil.

Spanish is one of the top five languages in the ranking by number of native speakers worldwide, so learning Spanish is the business savvy thing to do.

Certainly, it makes more sense than learning Portuguese.

re: #358 deRuiter

Wake up you Leftists! Multiculturalism is destructive.

And where would you and your family be were it not for the "south of the border illegals" who *work* as "dish washers, floor scrubbers, mushroom farm pickers, toilet cleaners" etc. Mr. Jingo The Gringo?

So much for compassionate conservatism.

Obviously, you don't understand the meaning of either one of these two words.

Your rant is despicable and beyond comptempt.

Obama shows more and more what a typical liberal hypocrite he is. Do as I say (learn to speak Spanish) not as I do (don't speak Spanish). Of course, we know he's just pandering to his audience, and it's becoming evident he's worse than Hillary at telling each audience what they want to hear. Hope and Change? BWAHAHAHAHA! Typical lying sack of you know what. Since I speak fluent Spanish, I'd love to walk up to him and say "Oye, Berrako, porque eres un comunista mentiroso y comemierda?"

My wife is a social worker at Jewish Community Services here in town, a bastion of liberal PC thought. She shocked the hell out of me last week when she said that most of them said they were voting for McCain in November. They see what a phony baloney The Obamination is. Now that's real hope for me!

re: #545 SFGoth

The irony is that society types in NYC are now seeking Chinese nannies b/c Spanish is now useless unless you want to order an authentic burrito.

In NYC, fluent Chinese could actually be helpful in ordering a burrito -- it's now been about five years since I lived there, but back then it seemed to be the trend that a lot of the non-chain, "Mom & Pop"-type Tex/Mex eateries were Chinese owned and staffed! (I'm thinking particularly of the ones that advertised "flour tortillas freshly made on the premises" -- it seemed that invariably, the person manning the tortilla press and grilling your chicken fajitas was Asian, and most often Chinese, based on the newspapers they had lying around behind the counter.)

I am sick too death of Barrack telling me what things mean and what i should do.

He has ideas!? I mean, other than raising taxes.

586 Gmac  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 3:09:00pm

Jeez, talk about the 'audacity' he has of trying to make us believe he is fluent in multiple languages. I do somehow believe he can speak in the language of French though, no one can say surrender better than a cheese eating surrender monkey.

Maybe he should tell all those illegal aliens they need to learn English and speak it before asking anyone else to learn a foreign language in this country.
