Traffic Surge Open Thread

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 8:40:33 am PDT

We got knocked off line by a huge surge in traffic, going to the Iranian Fauxtography thread. Stinky Beaumont is checking the wiring and the hamsters are stocked up with energy bars again. Here’s an open thread while we run some tests...

UPDATE at 7/10/08 9:13:38 am:

We’re currently handling over 8,000 people online... the hamsters’ little paws are blurs...

re: #2 jemima

Why is this such a big deal? We all know the Iranians lie.

It's a two part response.

One, the Iranians had successful launches, but wanted to hide their failures. They're still working the kinks out of their long range missiles, and remains a threat, but didn't want people to see their failure.

Two, the media did not pick up on the photo edits until after it made front pages at the LAT, NYT, and other US media outlets - and yes that means that Cognito has to explain his nonsensical responses from yesterday's missile thread that AFP isn't a Western media outlet, or how this didn't affect the US media market. I think the front page of the LAT and Palm Beach Post counts. The NYT web page counts.

AFP has pulled the photo, but not before having it picked up by outlets around the world. Nice.

It would have been nice if the NYT gave credit to discovering the bogus image here at LGF, but they do cite to an earlier LGF story on bogus Iranian military footage.

BTW, you aren't getting the credit you deserve for breaking this story about the fauxtography - I've tried posting it at the NYT On line which has an article on the fauxtography (and they screwed that up, saying that there WERE three missles, and a fourth was photoshopped in!), but I'm still waiting - but not holding my breath - for NYT Online to approve my comment for publication.

Contrast this with how the Points of Light Institute (w/ George W. Bush as its honorary chairman) handled theft.

And note how the ACORN nuts don't even see that they did anything wrong:

“We thought it best at the time to protect the organization, as well as to get the funds back into the organization, to deal with it in-house,” said Maude Hurd, president of Acorn. “It was a judgment call at the time, and looking back, people can agree or disagree with it, but we did what we thought was right.”

Oh, well, if you thought it was right to cover up a million-dollar embezzlement by a crony insider... then I guess it's okay. Your feelings are what really count, after all.

The NYT article on the photoshopped missiles claims there were3 missiles, not 4. But the way I see it, there were at most two missiles. The missile & exhaust trail at the far right and the missile & exhaust trail at the far left are the same, although the scale has been altered to make the one on the left appear in the distance. Note the identical profiles of the exhaust cloud. No way that happened in reality.

Hey, Cognito -- you owe me an apology, by the way.

He owes quite a few of us an apology. I did try to warn him yesterday he was making a big mistake in arguing that US media outlets weren't using the photo. But he was stuck on stupid.

Just a drive-by and haven't read the thread.

re: #92 Charles

Hey, Cognito -- you owe me an apology, by the way.

The accusation that you leveled -- that the Western media had published it -- did eventually become true.

My point still stands:

My larger point is that there's a seemingly genetic trait that leads some here to instinctively bash the Western media. Which is fantastically hypocritical.

Why?

Well.

1) We here at LGF have enjoyed several -- a half dozen? a dozen? -- posts today that came thanks to the monsterous Western media. Articles on Louisiana politics in general, Patsy Jindal in particular, Barack Obama's Spanish plan, the ever-lovely Pat Buchanan, FISA... you get the picture.

2) Further, two of the articles we've enjoyed today came from the AFP, the very news service we're bashing at the moment: articles on Obama's German plan, and the attack in Turkey. So we're going to eat them alive now, for missing a photoshop job that's actually not too dissimilar from other photos that aren't photoshopped? What's that you say, it's not about the photoshopping, really, but rather their using Iranian footage?

3) That's almost a good point. There might be a legitimate criticism here that, "Hey! We should ignore all photos and video originating in Iran!" But that's somewhat embarrassed by the fact that at 11:36 a.m. PDT, we all enjoyed a post that featured Iranian footage of the alleged missile launch.

So come on. This is just petty.

So yes, I am sorry that so many Western media outlets published the photo. But I'm not sorry I made the point that I did.

re: #94 nyc redneck,

And we can hope their nukes all turn out to be fizzels. Oh, did you see this:

OPEC threatens to use oil as a weapon if Iran Attacked

VIENNA: The head of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries warned Thursday that oil prices would see an "unlimited" increase in the case of a military conflict involving Iran, because the group's members would be unable to make up the lost production.

"We really cannot replace Iran's production - it's not feasible to replace it," Abdalla Salem El-Badri, the OPEC secretary general, said in an interview.

Iran, the second-largest producing country in OPEC, after Saudi Arabia, produces about four million barrels of oil a day out of the daily worldwide production of close to 87 million barrels.

It sure would be nice if the ANWR supplies were coming on line right now, wouldn't it? I blame the Democrats.

Cleaner skies explain surprise rate of warming
* 09 July 2008
* From New Scientist

Closing paragraph:

The latest climate models are built on the assumption that aerosols have their biggest influence by seeding natural clouds, which reflect sunlight. However, the team found that radiation dropped only slightly on cloudy days, suggesting that the main impact of aerosols is to block sunlight directly.

What.a.crock. The "seeding natural clouds" idea is sensible. (Sunlight scattered/reflected back into space from clouds is sunlight that does not warm the earth.) The other isn't. If aerosols indeed "block" sunlight, it should matter very little whether that sunlight is absorbed in the atmosphere or at the earth's surface.

A for propaganda, F for science.

re: #134 MandyManners

My own experience is that Cognito is blinded by pride in profession.

Members of that profession, it would seem, should be extremely cautious about the sins of pride, and would therefore resist any temptation of being proud.

But the smugness of the post-modern journalists is so thick and impenetrable as to overwhelm any mortal who seeks to become an "unbiased journalist."

On the subject of pride, Charles has a reason to be proud today, but I suspect he feels more frustration than pride - such events are so common that it is sad that professional journalists fall for this time and time again. To think that AFP actually used a terrorists organization's PR arm as a source without any measure of skepticism (whereas any reporting of a claim from the White House or Pentagon is immediately treated with skepticism) tells everyone everything about the state of Western Journalism. And Cognito's defense in spite of fact illustrates the issue of pride better than anything I can compose.

Either more people are discovering the MSM is blatantly lying to them and are coming here (amongst other blogs) to get at the truth, or some people don't want the lies of the MSM exposed to a greater audience.

I assume these muslim hospitals would be used for surgical removal of heads from necks, FGM, honor killings, and limb amputation set forth by sharia - all right here in America. A kinder, gentler form of islam.

/do I really need this?

No matter how you attempt to spin it you got caught lying and obfuscating for the MSM. You got pwned and don't have the balls to admit it.

Ha! I love it!

Which lie was that, if you don't mind quoting?

(And bonus points for using the buzz word of the moment!)

Couple of questions for you Charles.

1) Are you still using Apache 1.3.41, MySQL 4, and PHP 4.4.8? If not, upgrade to Apache 2.2.9, PHP5, and MySQL 5 for the improvements in handling traffic and security.

2) Did HostingMatters help you deal with the increase traffic? I know they are a reseller for SoftLayer. But, I would prefer dealing directly with SoftLayer as a host simply because of their stellar support reputation.

3) What type of hardware are you using? Hopefully, a quad core multiprocessor with more than 4Gb of RAM plus RAID hard drives.

Just curious.

Nah, got more important things to do like cleaning out my cat's litter box, removing belly-button lint, and picking my feet in Poughkeepsie. But don't stop being a shill/apologist for the MSM on my account.

CIAO.

Also, what kind of deoderant do you use, and does it work?

See what happens? Iran photoshops a few photos, and the Germans get drunk and fight fires!
