A Memo to Fox News and the New York Times

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 11:23:24 am PDT

Memo to Fox News and the New York Times:

No, the New York Times did not break this story: Photo of Detonated Iranian Missiles Appears to Have Been Digitally Altered.

Please see: LGF: Iran’s Photoshopped Missile Launch.

UPDATE at 7/10/08 11:33:17 am:

In their article, the New York Times fails to credit LGF: In an Iranian Image, a Missile Too Many - The Lede - Breaking News - New York Times Blog.

They do, however, link to an earlier LGF post on Iranian fauxtography, which strongly suggests that they know very well where their “scoop” came from.

UPDATE at 7/10/08 12:06:53 pm:

The Washington Post credits the news agency that released the fake photo, Agence France Presse, for discovering the fakery: Iran Launches Another Test Missile, Draws Rebuke From Rice.

In addition, Agence France-Presse revealed today that a photograph it issued of the original missile launch was apparently doctored by Iran to exaggerate the capabilities of the weapons. The photo, widely used in newspapers and Web sites around the globe, showed four missiles being fired, when in fact only three had been captured on film.

“It very much does appear that Iran doctored the photo to cover up what apparently was a misfiring of one of the missiles,” Mark Fitzpatrick of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies told the French news agency.

UPDATE at 7/10/08 1:32:11 pm:

Thanks to the Washington Post for correcting the record.

In addition, the Little Green Footballs Web site revealed yesterday that Agence France-Presse issued a photograph of the missile launch that was apparently doctored by Iran to exaggerate the capabilities of the weapons.

UPDATE at 7/10/08 3:06:05 pm:

Bob Owens writes:

Early this morning, I left a comment at the Lede noting that Charles was not only the person who exposed this fraud, but Dan Rather’s faked TANG documents as well.

Nine hours later, the comment has yet to clear moderation. Mike Nizza and Patrick Witty apparently don’t feel like sharing their stolen credit with the person who actually exposed this fraud.

UPDATE at 7/10/08 3:38:53 pm:

At Hot Air: Can the MSM credit LGF, please?

UPDATE at 7/10/08 7:36:55 pm:

The Washington Post has now removed the article about the faked photo, along with the credit to LGF.

re: #4 Syrah

The NYT is afraid to credit LGF.

I had the same impression reading the article, they went out of their way to avoid quoting the actual source. They reffered to some other "expert" who was shown the photo (and probably prompted to comment on whether it was fake) and commented that yes it looked doctored. Maybe Charles needs to add NYT right below the Reuters hit counter.

Missed your Prager talk, I blame the hampsters!

Good job Charles!

12 Zach_the_Lizard  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 11:32:37am

What caused the huge surge in traffic? Who linked to you and blew you offline? Just curious.

12,000 users online is a ton, at least compared to my personal webpage that hasn't been updated in about 5 years, coded to ensure that IE didn't blow it up and probably with support for Firefox 1 (I think). I would link to it, but then again, it would be laughably devoid of content (other than "Hello, this website is under construction.") and it would probably die in a few minutes from the 5 people who click the link.

Can their layers of well-paid fact-checkers get anything right anymore?

31 Charles  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 11:41:08am

To give Drudge the benefit of the doubt, he has linked to LGF in the past. The problem with a link from Drudge Report, though, is that it sends such a deluge of traffic that many sites simply crash within minutes -- LGF included. He may have linked to the Times knowing that they would stay online.

The New York Times definitely knew where the story came from, though.

32 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 11:41:32am

The big media outlets don't know and don't care that you, a blogger, did what they could not, discover a fraudulent photo that made its way on to the front pages of US big media outlets - the mainstream media.

It wasn't just confined to AFP affiliated sites, or Middle Eastern outlets, but the LAT, NYT, and others.

And Charles figured it out yesterday well before the NYT got on the story. And the original photo surfaced - clearly showing that the one that got sent around was bogus.

Of course, there's still the not insignificant problem of what this says about the Iranian intentions - they still want missiles to go boom over their enemies, want to minimize their failures (perhaps for domestic consumption), and possibly even for foreign consumption (get people misjudging the quality and quantity of Iranian capabilities).

The Iranians have missiles. They have long range missiles. They have an intention to use them. They want nuclear weapons. They have a nuclear program that they refuse to openly report. It's expected that they may have a nuclear weapon in as little as six months.

I'd say that this remains a deadly serious situation, even if the commenters at the NYT and BBC and elsewhere think that this is all part of a Bush-conspiracy to go to war with Iran.

33 turn  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 11:42:00am

Just sent to FOX:

Hey Fox editors, Don't add insult to injury by putting out more false information. The source for the Iranian missle fauxtography wasn't the NYT, it was Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs blog. This is the same man who broke the Rathergate forgery. Set it staight.

Let me revise and extend my remarks. They sometimes know where the scoops come from - and then refuse to give them due credit. To admit that a blogger, a pajama clad blogger no less, scooped them shows that the journalist business isn't as tough as the so called experts want you to believe.

Some don't have the time to care where the original source came from and simply use reports from others - which is how this mess got spread around the world in hours and picked up on the front pages of major US newspapers (again, big media/MSM/western media).

re: #31 Charles

The New York Times definitely knew where the story came from, though.

Charles - It is all to do with the control of the message that the breakfast table newspapers have in the U.S. The newspapers don't want to send people here because the message will be diluted, even if by a small amount. Think of how many people read the paper at breakfast, on the train/bus to work, etc. Think of how Obama can say one thing to a group like AIPAC, getting them all excited and ensuring their and their communities' vote, then say the opposite the next day with no worry that the AIPAC people will correct the glowing reports they took back to their home communities. Obama & Co. know that the newspapers will print the first falsity and not print the contradictory statement.

So don't be surprised when they don't acknowledge your LGF.

I've thought of an idea where people can either themselves or have a blogger type person do a compilation splash web page every day. The subscriber could either read and click to links online or buy a newspaper size printer to sit in their breakfast table area. It would run on a timer so that the hard copy would have printed out (with the stories printed rather than URL links) when they come in to grab their coffee and head out the door. Something like this is what it will take to counter the lying MSM! They are going to ruin this country if we don't do something. Would Pajamas want to do it?

Two prominent national nonprofit groups are reeling from public disclosures that large sums of money were misappropriated in unrelated incidents by an employee and a former employee.

The groups, Acorn, one of the country’s largest community organizing groups, and the Points of Light Institute, which works to encourage civic activism and volunteering, have dealt with the problems in very different ways.

Acorn chose to treat the embezzlement of nearly $1 million eight years ago as an internal matter and did not even notify its board. After Points of Light noticed financial irregularities in early June, it took less than a month for management to alert federal prosecutors, although group officials say they have no clear idea yet what the financial impact may be.

"In addition, Agence France-Presse revealed today that a photograph it issued of the original missile launch was apparently doctored by Iran to exaggerate the capabilities of the weapons. The photo, widely used in newspapers and Web sites around the globe, showed four missiles being fired, when in fact only three had been captured on film.

"It very much does appear that Iran doctored the photo to cover up what apparently was a misfiring of one of the missiles," Mark Fitzpatrick of the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies told the French news agency."

They (all those that published the altered photos) take at face value information from regimes that have been proven over and over to be liars. Why would they do that?

It appears they didn't even give the photos a precursory check, when given Iran's reputation, they should have given it the Double-Secret-Probation check.

i agree.
i think the nyt is so unscrupulous they would actually run photos they more than suspected as fake. and hope they could get away w/ it.

Some of the comments at the New York Times are mind-boggling.

Searching for image tampering in the missile launching pictures is utterly nonsense. Why should the Iranians do it? What possible difference can one more or one less missile do? To me, this is nothing but another Israeli attempt at hiding their discomfort over Iran. Israelis, clearly, fear Iran. That’s why they are trying to raise a hullaballoo over the whole affair.

Seriously, who cares if Iran did a missle test? Amerika does them all the time. Iran claims to have their finger on the trigger, so does Amerika. When Amerika dismantles its nuclear program, and withdrawals it’s troops from Iraq, then Iran will be less hostile. Duh!

After 1 victim escapes, police find 2nd man tied up in house
By MEG JONES
mjones@journalsentinel.com
Posted: July 9, 2008

Bail was set at $1 million Wednesday for a Wisconsin Rapids-area man arrested in the abduction of two young men who told authorities they were kept against their will in his home. Edward Lanphear, 46, of the Town of Saratoga was arrested after a 21-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man escaped and called authorities about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wood County Sheriff Thomas Reichert said. In Lanphear’s home, deputies found a 23-year-old Town of Grand Rapids man who had been missing since the Fourth of July after telling friends he was walking home following fireworks. According to court documents:

The 23-year-old man told authorities he was looking for a ride home and got into a vehicle. The driver then pulled over, said he was a police officer, handcuffed the man and knocked him unconscious with a flashlight. The 23-year-old woke up chained in a basement and was sexually assaulted. His chains were connected to a string tied to a shotgun, making it life-threatening for him to move. The 21-year-old man was reported missing about 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, and his vehicle was found near a Wisconsin Rapids tavern. He told authorities he passed out in his car and woke up naked, hanging and chained in the garage. He said he and Lanphear frequented the same bar. Both men were taken to a hospital. “They were certainly shaken up. They had some bruising, but they were otherwise in good health. Both are doing well,” Reichert said Wednesday. Lanphear is being held at Wood County Jail.

Two-thirds of the way down the 1st page is this paragraph:

"Remember that advanced fighter that Iran built, supposedly equal to our own F/A-18? It’s actually a remanufactured U.S. F-5, with a second vertical stabilizer and marginally upgraded avionics. Or that high-speed torpedo? It is based on a Soviet design from World War II, requiring precise pre-launch calculations. If the target changes speed, zig-zags, or does anything to upset the firing solution, the torpedo misses its mark."

In fact, the most serious analysis of Iranian military claims can be found in the blogs, including this one. As we’ve noted in previous posts, Tehran’s displays of armed might sometimes laughable, if you only bother to take a closer look.

But give Iran some credit. It takes a certain amount of chutzpah to pass off a World War II torpedo as an unbeatable naval weapon, or advertise a 50-year old rocket design, coated with radar-absorbing paint, as a “stealth missile.” And it takes a lazy, gullible press to fall for those claims, hook, line and sinker.

It is more than obvious, they are trying to create a paper trail for this in the record.

All one has to do, is look at their own blogs at the same date and time, see what is being discussed, and the truth is abundant.

You have gained in popularity, they have lost significant market share.

They can't spin this.

The world, despite the apparent ambivelence to the situation, knows all well the Iranian Regime and their nuclear aspirations is deadly serious business.

EUREKA! And more importantly, KA-CHING! I could offer the Iranians a very reasonable price - say, US$20 million - for my revolutionary non-ferrous subsonic ballistic munition technology.

Charles - aren't there log entries to see when the NYT newsroom picked up the story so as to demonstrate when and how they lifted the story without attribution?

Yes, there are log entries, but they only record IP addresses and other semi-anonymous data. There's no way to tell at a glance where a hit came from -- I have to look up the IP address.

Since we have over 100,000 page views in the last 12 hours, that's somewhat problematic.

In WW2 the germans experimented with rocket-propelled torpedoes (termed rather ingloriously as "farting torpedoes") with little success. It has been hypothesized that the Kursk went down as a result of a runaway of a shkval upgrade prototype. When I heard about the radar-evading torpedo this morning, I thought they were resurrecting a term from the very early 20th century: The Aerial Torpedo.

I'm not sure you even need to dig that deep Sharmuta. It really is a question of idealogy (if I can use such a loaded term) vs. $. Their current format seems to be making them the bucks, so that is what they will go with. If a farther right bent would bring in more cash, I think it is safe to assume that that is the way they will go.

The farther left the left gets, the farther left FOX has to get to maintain the same amount of "right" lest they be seen as total radicals.

Let's get pragmatic. I want to know if that Shahab-3 test-firing worked properly. They've been trying to get one to fly right for a decade or so.

Even if they fix the reliability issues, it's still an Iranian-built copy of a North Korean knockoff of an old Soviet design.

It's absolutely useless as a military weapon, unless it's carrying a nuclear warhead. It has a 2,200 pound payload capacity, with a CEP of somewhere between 250 and 4,000 meters, depending on who you ask. Even if the 250 meter figure is accurate (which I doubt), it's not good enough to hit a military target with a conventional warhead.

Basically, without a nuke, it's a Persian V-2. Not much good for anything but scaring the civilian populace.

The MSM has a job to do, when it doesn't do it out of ideological sympathy, bias or laziness and someone else takes their place, it's a bitter pill to swallow. Sometimes, I suspect it's just that laziness at work. Other times there's reason not to be so generous.

Quote:
Little Green Footballs, a conservative blog, identified the altered image on Wednesday. Last year the blog pointed out a manipulated image that had been distributed by Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency. As in the case of Wednesday’s photograph and many others that the site has uncovered, the one from 2007 appeared to contain several cloned elements.

Charles, that Washington Post link above no longer contains any reference to the photoshopped image nor Little Green Footalls.

Yep, it's completely vanished from the Washington Post web site.

Late yesterday afternoon, the White House spokesperson addressing the Iranian missiles, distinctly informed the press corps about the photo-shopped missile photo. To paraphrase:"well, there are Internet blogs talking about Iran's photo-shopped missile photos" By happensta nce, I taped this interview. So the White House people recognized the source came from an Internet site, not the New York Times. It would have been better if they stated your blog, but they definitely heard it from a blog, not the NYT.

Charles is now a " noted debunker":

Noted debunker Charles Johnson apparently spotted the photo doctoring Wednesday and posted it on his Web site, LittleGreenFootballs.com.
