Reality vs. Photoshop

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 1:47:52 pm PDT

Here’s the genuine photo from Iran’s missile test, showing the reason why it was altered: because one of the missiles failed to launch.

The Photoshopped version for comparison:

UPDATE at 7/10/08 1:51:09 pm:

Another of the photos released by Iran turns out to have been taken last year; Kamangir has the scoop: Iranian Missile Drill: Pictures do not Lie!

We should have just Photoshopped away all those missile launch failures in the US space program in the '50s and '60s. We would have gotten to the moon so much faster!

Why is it that countries like Iran think the West won't discover their many lies? Inevitably, it makes them look foolish and naive.

19 Pullus Iulius  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 1:53:52pm

All dressed up and nowhere to go. Happened a lot with the Army back when they were using the Corporal missile for long-range artillery. Used the same Red Fuming Nitric Acid oxidizer. Nasty stuff. You don't want to vent a load.

The MSM is doing a pathetic job at this, the NYT seems to have gone out of their way to avoid crediting LGF. They are still stinging from the last issue LGF hammered them with. They NTY even used their own photo editing to mark the points on the photos. Man they are scared of LGF!

The MSM crown jewels are falling off one by one.

23 lone_wolf_in_illinois  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 1:55:58pm

I wonder how many will retract their publishing of this? They will probably relegate it to the middle of the paper if they do. And they wonder why we don't trust the media! At least we can call them on the carpet for it.

We are on vacation in Myrtle Beach and I hadn't turned on the computer in a few days and then watching CNN waiting for the rain to pass they did a story on the photoshopped Iranian missile launch and even though they didn't mention LGF, I just knew it was Charles and the minions who figured that out. So I had to drag out the computer and check to see if my hunch was right. Ha.

In an Obama Presidency I would think Hussein would have Jesse Jackson riding the first U.S. bomb dropped on the Iranian nuclear sites a la "Dr. Strangelove". Poor Jesse, in having dissed the Messiah.

P.S. Obama will never defend our security by bombing Iran. He would however send poor Jesse as an advocate for democracy ( i.e. hostage) to Mugabe.

Even that old race-baiter and alleged tax cheat, Al Shapton, knows better than to crap on the chosen one. Jesse, what were you thinking?

I'm a little confused by this. Israel already has AWACS. And if the purpose of cramming AWACS-type technology into a Gulfstream is so that it could pass for civilian aircraft and fool the enemy... well, then why show the thing at an airshow?

Perhaps because now every time a gulfstream comes close to any Arab airspace they are going to have to wonder if it is an Israeli plane and then wonder whether they are all about to die. Kind of puts a little stress on your air defenses. Gulfstream jets are pretty common - especially in oil states.

I kind of think it will be pre-empted. Which is sad to say since I like the Iranian people that I have met and know.

Israelis are less touchy-feeling than Americans and will launch. They have the national trauma of six million dead, and 2,00 from terrorism, not 3,000 Americans in 9/11, which sadly to say, is increasingly being forgotten by our countrymen spoiled by the good job the widely-reviled George Bush has done in protecting the homeland.

I think this all will have a bad end.

re: #103 Ojoe

Ah well, if they plan to nuke 4 cities they will only nuke 3.

Great.

Well, first, they haven't demonstrated an ability to put a missile on a target, or build a warhead small enough to get anywhere on the lifting hardware they showed in the demonstration.

Second, this was their show, on their timetable with nobody putting ordinance over the launch sites to make the firing crews stressed. It should have been a "picture perfect" demonstration.

We had the same constraints back in my Special Weapons days and realized that when the balloon went up, something less that 100% of the equipment would function at show time, but you show your backside at a live firing demonstration and you knew you had some serious problems.

So 25% failure to launch under "ideal" conditions goes up to 50%+ under "less than ideal" conditions and you haven't yet run the gamut of the anti missile technology that you know about; much less the stuff you *don't* know about.

Pretty soon you end up with a low-yield fizzle landing in Gaza somewhere and a whole butt-load of the real deal coming right back at ya.

I'm just sayin'

Looks to me like the dirt pile to the right of the missile launcher was copied over to the left in the doctored pic then painted over a little to make it blend in. The ridge pattern on both are identical. Not that you need MORE proof that these pics are doctored.

It makes me smile to think that they would put this out and think we wouldn't notice. Nothing is more funny than watching a bad liar in action.

The credit should go to EU Referendum blogspot. They first noticed the similarities. But the reuse of old photos wasn't the subject of the EU post, it was more like an aside, so they didn't provide links to yesterday's republishing of the old pics.

That is very odd, since the "original" shown on the New York Times' blog was taken a moment earlier in time. The CS Monitor version appears to be a reconstruction of what the fauxtoshopped image must have looked like before it was altered, and thus it is itself a digitally manipulated image.

Fellow lizards, I don't comment here much, as somebody else has usually already said exactly what I'd like to say.
But this is an exception. I think real credit is due to the Iranian archer, Kamangir, the Iranian blogger living in Canada, and first reporting this, as Charles has credited above.
This man is a genuine leader among his fellow Iranian countrymen, who reject the Islamic theocracy forced upon Iran since 1979, helped by President Jimmah Cartah.

Through his widely read blog, he has led many good, free-thinking Iranian bloggers express their thoughts and their hopes that Iran will again be a secular nation someday. Arash, "Kamangir", has mostly single handedly been responsible for many free voices finding readers and ears around the world, in their yearning to be free of Islam.

Kamangir is a daily read for me, as is LGF, Michelle Malkin and Jihadwatch. It certainly opens up a realm of truth mostly unknown, of the Iranian majority of peoples.

170 LocalMalcontent  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 5:17:45pm

Agreed, Charles, sir. The photos you have put up here, and earlier today both are different than Arash's two, but the emphasis is identical: There is Photoshop fraud being perpatrated on the West.

I see this as an attempt by Ahmadinejad and the Islamos in charge in Tehran, as an attempt to bait the West into a preemptive attack, thereby garnering the sympathies of Muslims worldwide against both the U.S. and Israel, exactly as Hezbollah did two summers ago, in the short Lebanese/Israeli war.
Remember, that one began with the kidnapping of two IMF soldiers along the border, by Hezbollah, first.
But does the world, the U.N. look at that, thataway?

Huh? Kamangir is a daily read for you? He's been barely posting the past couple of months. Ever since he was 'outed' by the Iranian regime he's been keeping a real low profile.
The second point I take issue with is "the Iranian majority of peoples" although you don't exactly say what they think. They are awfully quiet. IMO, Islam has won that country (The Islamic Republic of Iran) and completely subjugated it.

I lack the technical ability to illustrate my point, which in addition to pointing out that everyone else has missed the point, THE FENCE IS THE ONLY OBJECT, that was photo shopped in the entire picture.

Iran has done everything it can to prevent the world from learning that it does not have sufficient fencing to either keep people in or others out.

Someone could help me illustrate that only one of poles is real and the the wires has been from an older U.S. motion picture, The Great Escape.

180 j.pickens  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:04:23pm

Charles,
The photo you show as unaltered has indeed been altered.
Compare your image located at getty images/afp:
[Link: www.daylife.com...]
with the New York Times version:
[Link: graphics8.nytimes.com...]

The right hand missle looks to be spewing black smoke from the sides at about 1/3 the way from the tip of the missle.
Also, the rocket plume appears different.
Perhaps they are different photos, but the look the same to me, with the exception of the differences to the right hand missle.

I posted this NYT image analysis on Lawhawk this afternoon at 12:16pm, noting the black smoke when compared to the photshopped 4 missle image. Now that I see this new version, I say it is still photoshopped.
Perhaps the black smoke indicates a problem with the missle.

181 j.pickens  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:13:45pm

I downloaded both photos, and the NYT version appears to be taken by the same camera moments before the "unphotoshopped" version.
I'm guessing the black plumes I mentioned may be reaction control system jets, since the plumes appeared intermittantly.
Looking at all the Iranian missile test photos, I see the black side jets in several other images.

185 jas88  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 11:44:51pm

At first, this seemed bizarre. Firstly, why bother Photoshopping in one extra missile? Even test firing them ONE at a time would do the job of proving their existence, let alone three.

Secondly, if you're going to do it, why do it badly? Just Photoshopping in a *different* missile (from another launch, or even one of the other three from a different camera angle or whatever) would have stopped the pixels being identical!

This leaves us with one question: did Iran, with the resources to build and fire multiple long-range missiles while conducting a nuclear program, genuinely fail to do a competent job Photoshopping the photo of that launch - or was it deliberate? I've already seen moonbats elsewhere using this as proof Iran's threat is being exaggerated as a justification for war. The fake missile is useless militarily, of course, and has already been exposed as fake - but by providing ammunition for Iran's anti-war useful idiots in the fight against sanctions, it could turn out to be the most potent weapon in Iran's arsenal so far.
