IPhone 3G Eve

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 7:30:28 pm PDT

OK, so who’s planning to try to grab an iPhone 3G tomorrow?

Apple - iPhone.

(Besides me, that is.)

The software update is sweet for the 1st edition iPhone!

iTunes now has an iPhone app store with a lot free applications and some for just a few bucks. I picked up AIM, a voice recorder, to do list, restaurant tab calculator and a flashlight.
Software Christmas!

Not a snowballs chance in hell. I am resisting them giving me a blackberry at work, a cell is bad enough. When they get an I-phone down to 50 bucks and 25 a month for service, I'll buy in.

My Palm LifeDrive just died. I had plans on a new iPhone until I checked on AT&T's service in the area of my very rural school. No good.

Now, I'm not sure. I'm disappointed in the Palm's performance. It really didn't last as long as it should. Still, I already have the keyboard and other goodies.

There's an object known as an iPhone? Curious. Very curious.

Does it work with any network besides AT&T? Or do we have to crack it like a scrambled egg to make it behave?

I have a blackjack now and the text is so small I can barely read it w/o glasses, which since i don't need to see, drive or etc, make it impossible to use very well on the fly. why would I want to have a phone I have to touch in just the right spot to answer? While I am driving in particular.

I'm struggling with it. I have the upgrade cash and current iPhone owner. I want GPS and the 3G. I do not want to upgrade the current iPhones til it's determined if 2.0 can be unlocked (jailbreak has already been confirmed) lest I ruin their 1.1.4 value.I don't want to pay an extra $15/month to achieve the same level of Gen! service.

Verizon IS really good - as a cell phone - my company has them as well as AT&T. I know it really hurts - mentally more than fiscally - to blow off a carrier. Think of it this way, on average - breaking a cell phone contract costs on average $175.00. If that is what it takes - IT IS THE CHEAPEST DIVORCE YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE. We went through the same thing with Sprint/Nextel. We were close to the end of the contract, and so paid for two (2) months in advance and "ended" the contracts. That was it, and everybody in the company is "Reasonably Unhappy" these days - works for me.

I've been running the 2.0 firmware all day today and I have to say that it is about damn time. The phone seems to be snappier and runs just all around a lot better. The only app that I really miss from my jail broken iphone is the video recorder application that I had. I am thinking that it will end up on the app store really soon.

79 Hawk59  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 8:07:43pm

Updated my iPhone to the 2.0 firmware earlier today, and added OMA and Mobile Sync to my Exchange servers. This step alone makes the iPhone a Blackberry killer, and the new Mobile Apps Store on itunes has some awesome free software (and some software that I am certain is awesome as well, but not free). Exchange Email Push, Active Directory lookups, calendar sync....It's pretty near seamless.

Just an observation, but it appears to me that the 2.0 firmware might have "upclocked" the processor on the older iPhone. It seems to run a bit hotter (temperature-wise) and the battery seems to drop more quickly....Or it may just be that I have been messing with it all day ;-)

I upgraded my iPhone to 2.0 today the nerdly way instead of waiting. There is enough GPS built in for me not to need to buy the new one - and I can get wifi pretty much everywhere, so the faster "edge" network aint no big thing. The speaker is better in the new unit supposedly.

There was a good discussion all day about how to upgrade to 2.0 so I dove in, upgraded iTunes to 7.7, downloaded the update file for iPhone via Firefox (all on Windoze Vista cause it was all I had to work on) and off I went to the App Store ---- and got next to nothing done all day work-wise having so much fun.

The App Store is awesome.

Some of my favorites so far: AIM, Google, Remote, Facebook, Evernote, Twitterrific, Jott, NetNewsWire & Flashlight ---- oh, and AquaForest (which is best for kids in the back seat of the car and a complete time sink, and wonderful). Many are free.

The first RSS feed I added to NetNewsWire was Little Green Footballs.

By the way, there was discussion among comrade nerdlies on FriendFeed today about the Photoshop job on the Iranian missile can't get it up launch. Mention of the Lizard Army was made.

Truth prevails.

Keep on keeping on!

But I'll bet it has great ringtones, and a really flashy display.
Priorities!

The Razor does have good ringtones. Mine is the "Pink Panther Theme".

People around when it rings get a kick out of it, instead of getting aggravated when I get a call..

Heh. I have an old Russian phone that my dad picked up in Afghanistan in the early 80's. I rewired it to work on American phone lines. The sound quality is shit but I love the sound of the ring.

Nice! I bet it weighs a ton!

Pull the battery.

I still have my original iPhone and I see no need to replace it. Ill just wait for the next generation of iPhone to come out...if the world is still around.

101 astronmr20  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 8:28:26pm

I finally decided to pull the trigger on one of these.

Coincidentally, my tmobile contract is up at the end of the month. I will wait until a few days before it ends, as the bastards will pro-rate the very end of the contract until the last day.

Watched the WWDC conference with the 3rd party developers unveiling their stuff for the Iphone 3g, and it was pretty stunning.

Because I work in the Wireless Location Based Services (GPS) industry, I am up to my a** in cellphones. I've got a Nextel i580 that feels like a flat hand grenade, a Sprint Sanyo 7050 and BlackBerry 8830 which I lovingly refer to as my electronic ball and chain. All of which are paid for by my company so I don't have to spend a dime on monthly cell service. The iPhone is cool but since I moved out of Silicon Valley to Arizona I am not as smitten by electronic gadgets and am more interested in spending my money on the sort of hardware the Obamahdi is probably going to try to ban.

105 astronmr20  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 8:40:08pm

For me it's between the moto-Q and the iphone.... just not too sure about windows mobile.. heard it's a bit slow.

Main thing, other than email and web for me, is spreadsheets. I'm pretty sure the iphone will read excel docs?

So if the iphone is faster and more stable than windows mobile (as OSX is much faster and more stable than windows in general on a similar computer), then I might spring for the Iphone.

Not tomorrow, not the day after, not ever. I hate to carry any cell phone. Makes me feel like there is a leash around my neck. Intolerable. BTW, the spooks can track your celll phone even when it is turned off.

1) You are perfectly capable of controlling the phone (and not it, you) if you want to.

2) Turn it completely off, and no, spooks can't track you. There is no power going to anything emitting a radio signal when the phone is completely shut down.

3) And anyway, spooks aren't tracking you.

A cell or two ago I had a Nokia to which ATT was able to "push" (in their parlance) program updates even when the phone had been turned off completely. They were also able to cycle or reboot the phone from an "off" state. My friend that works for Verizon indicated that the only way to be completely sure a given phone is powered off is to remove the battery.

As for a new iPhone, I'm going to wait until the dust settles and the fanboys have all stopped waiting in line. I admit, I'm tempted but a few weeks from now we'll know more about any hardware/software warts
in the 3G version.

I sat at the first version, primarily of the slow AT&T EDGE network. Now that the new iPhone is 3G, I'm going to be in line tomorrow. I'm hoping that I will be able to access my work email through the Exchange settings.

I've been with Sprint for over 11 years. It will weird to switch. I have the Samsung A900 currently. Until I got married a few years ago, I was buying new cell phones every year or so. I've had my Samsung for well over 2 years!

My contract is ending with Verizon this month. I plan on getting iPhone on Saturday. I may get it tomorrow. Not sure.

LeePro. Careful with Sprint. I've had nothing but HORRIBLE service from them. I'd use them because I'd get an awesome company discount, but the last time I had a phone from them, I was in analog roam most of where I was, and when I went to return the phone and cancel the service 2 days later, they still gouged me for a cancellation fee.

I have always viewed the me-me-me devices... I am sorry the "I" devices as a liberal status symbol thing. All liberals seem to go out and get one to impress each other. Some of them who waste their money on these me-me-me products then complain they have no money .

Of course they never complain about the huge profits of apple corp, or how apple back dated their stocks like Enron.

I looked quickly at the Verizon version, I also would like more info. I don't desperately need a new phone but I can get mine free with discounts. My current phone is one of those old phones that makes phone calls, but has a lot of problems when I try to recharge it. I can't tell if it is the connector on the phone or the charger but it doesn't connect properly.

So anybody have into on the Palm Centro?

I want one really bad but it's AT&T exclusive and we're with Sprint along with my wife's family and mine. We get Sprint to Sprint minutes(free calls between Sprint users) so it would be hard to convince the wife to switch carriers and give that up. Not to mention the plan for the phone.

I think the Apps Store is the number one reason that I am getting this phone. All that OS X goodness will make an amazing platform for all kinds of applications. I wouldn't be surprised if there were special lizard applications in the future!

Now, I have to drink more coffee, drive to New Hampster, and decide if I can take the social ostracism of buying a white phone, or if I should get black.

And, off topic, I can't remember the name of the philosophy where all choices are "black and white", or good or evil.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Is there anything dumber that standing in line all night to be one of the first to get a product that will be available later at a much reduced price and with the bugs of the original unit worked out? Does being the first with the latest matter that much? It makes no sense to me. Wake me up when the price comes down, though since I never had any interest in the original I-Phone I doubt I'll be interested in the new one.

Will the dim bulbs who stood in line for the first I-Phone stand in line for the new I-Phone? And will they stand in line to get the next one? You don't want to know what I think the "I" in I-Phone stands for.

It's because it is like a party! People are chatting, getting to know one another, sharing Apple stories etc. I went down to the Apple store to take photos of the first iPhone day and had loads of fun. The only experience like that I have had was standing in line for World Series tickets when I lived in St. Louis.

Sour grapes? Over what? I can afford an I-Phone if I ever decide I want one. If people want to stand in line all night for something it's their right. And that was my point, why wait in line all night and pay top dollar to get something first when after a while you'll be able to find it at an ATT outlet without standing in line for much less? But, hey, to each their own.

150 SecondComing  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 11:51:18am

151 Noam Chumpski  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 12:15:03pm

Thanks to an accidental "washing" of my iPhone (v.1) on Monday I was there in line this morning at 5am (EST) and got mine around 10:20am.

By then, AT&T had pretty much crashed (no one saw that coming? lol) and they politely asked me to activate it at home.

MobileMe is still a mess though and I guess it will work itself out over the weekend. I'm not sure what they were thinking releasing these things at the same time, but...

I don't wait in line for nothin', but I have to say I like this thing.

152 judahsabre  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 12:19:45pm

Land Shark: I found an out of the way AT&T outlet, and there was 1) a line, and 2) they had run out of iPhones by noon. Good theory, though: I mean, I figured I'd be better off there than at the Apple Store, and that I'd just walk in and buy one, as if it were, you know, sort of normal!

153 swampy  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 12:24:31pm

I have a Razr and I hate it. Too many menus and too many buttons to push just to do simple things. The text is too small to read and there's no way to read it in harsh daylight.

I'd like an iPhone, but AT&T does not offer 3G service in my area, but would charge me for it anyway! (grumble, grumbls). I may pick up someone's generation I iPhone off of eBay or someplace later.

@#149 Land Shark - "why wait in line all night and pay top dollar to get something first when after a while you'll be able to find it at an ATT outlet without standing in line for much less?"

Umm, no. The price will not be dropping from $199 anytime soon. Not for many months, if ever.
