New York Times Belatedly Credits LGF

Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 7:42:48 pm PDT

They finally got around to it—but only after I redirected any hits from their page claiming credit to my post calling them out on it: In Image of Iran’s Power, There’s Less Than Meets the Eye.

Little Green Footballs, a conservative blog, identified the altered image on Wednesday. Last year the blog pointed out a manipulated image that had been distributed by Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency. As in the case of Wednesday’s photograph and many others that the site has uncovered, the one from 2007 appeared to contain several cloned elements.

Of course, they feel it’s necessary to label LGF a “conservative blog,” even though it has no bearing on the story.

Their original article claiming credit has not been updated.

UPDATE at 7/10/08 8:08:56 pm:

The Washington Post’s original article has disappeared, but there’s a new article by Al Kamen: Iran Apparently in Possession of Photoshop.

Noted debunker Charles Johnson apparently spotted the photo doctoring Wednesday and posted it on his Web site, LittleGreenFootballs.com.

That would appear to violate their corrections policy, though it depends on how they treat thelede as part of their publication.

Close enough.

7 LoFlyer  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:46:02pm

Damn Charles, you hitting the big-time now. Personally I think your finest moment was when you pwned CBS for their 60 minutes fraudulent documents. You changed the course of the 2004 elections! Whoee!

That's because in their eyes you are an amateur and by gawd they got themselves a real live non-proliferation expert.

Let me get this right, a guy who is against weapons is an expert on knowing if a picture of weapons has been photoshopped.

9 DistantThunder  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:46:35pm

Grudging acknowledgment, but only when their feet were held to the fire.

They get zero credit for forced ethical behavior.

NYT hit a new FIVE YEAR low on the market today.

11 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:47:37pm

In other belated news, the UN now says it will investigate the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

This is months after she's been buried and questions emerged from the outset over the cause of death. A Scotland Yard investigation did little to clear things up either.

12 Cartman  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:47:42pm

That must have been fairly painful for some "progressive" journo over there. I'll bet they drew straws to see who would have to post the credit. ;)

19 krypto  Thu, Jul 10, 2008 7:49:06pm

Aw, it's not all bad that they label LGF a conservative blog. They're just admitting their prejudice as a reason for withholding any credit until now.

NYT hit a new FIVE YEAR low on the market today.

They are all hitting five year lows. The AJC just upped their newspaper price by fifty percent, and volume is dropping fast. Got into a short argument with my lib sister over the issue. She doesn't understand that they are no longer journalists but propagandist.

Yeah, I know we need to "keep a sense of humor." But godDAMMIT, we are talking about crazed religious fanatics with fucking NUKES! This isn't even Britain going through the Blitz. It's one of several interrelated issues alright. It goes to the heart of the mad mullahs insatiable quest for nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them. Failure isn't an option, and the photo edit may have been as much for Iranian domestic consumption as to fool the West.

Its funny about titles and their moments of vogue.

I call myself "Original Liberal" in deference to the American vernacular Poet Ice T`s ballad, OG "Original Gangster."

I think the whacko left will wilt and drop one day like a bad cucumber on a dry plant and it will be safe to be "liberal" again meaning for equality of opportunity, free markets, press etc...

And below that:

AFP, citing analysts' assessments, reported yesterday that the four-missile photo appeared to have had a little digital work done. "One of the missiles had apparently been added to the photograph using elements from the smoke trail and dust clouds from two of the other missiles," AFP said. The goal apparently was to cover up "a misfiring of one of the missiles," an expert told AFP.

Well, yeah- Iran is the problem... But the MSM and in particular the NYT are doing their dead-level best to see that America sits on its collective hands until the mullahs get bombs. It won't be just one; They will play this hand until they have several then they'll strike, attack Israel, attack the US continent, and expose the other bombs to europe and hold them hostage to prevent the US from retaliating. I would not at all be comforted by the assumption that the US would respond to an attack with our own nukes. The Europeans might actually threaten to attack US with their nukes to prevent us from destroying Iran, because they know they will get creamed before the USA bombs hit. If Obama gets in we are cooked. Our best defense, our only defense is overt demonstration of our strength and determination. The NYT and MSM undermine this daily and they are putting all our lives in a terrible risk.

No, they deserve no credit at all.

I do support the Second Amendment -- but calling LGF a "gun rights" blog is beyond ludicrous.

I'm going to say something that might shock people coming from a member of the Military who supports non-felons owning weapons.

I don't think the Constitution is referring to the individual's right to own guns. I think that such a "right" was assumed so basic that no one ever thought it would be challenged. The constitution addresses the rights of the people to have the abilitity to overthrow the government in case I dunno a President decides to start his own "civilian" "intelligence force" the size of the military and just as well funded.

I still don't see how taking away people's guns is going to reduce violent crime, nobody has ever explained how the lack of a particular expensive and efficient weapon will equal out to a lack of particularly violent and evil crimes. And no one has yet to explain how it is you take the guns away from the people who never registered them or who got them through the black market.

What the NYT says in that paragraph is pretty flattering to Charles and LGF. I think it is good that they put in the aside that it is a "conservative blog," even if their motive is to be dismissive. But it's still accurate and underscores in the context that it was a conservative blog that has brought many cases of fauxtography to light.

While nobody likes to be pigeon-holed, LGF is obviously right-of-center. On some issues, like the ID issue, LGF's stance is not evangelical, but there are plenty of conservatives who think ID is bunk too. So it's accurate to say that LGF is a conservative blog, and politics and global issues from a mostly conservative bent are what the blog generally posts on. So whatever the reason NYT added that aside, whether to diminish the site or to just put in some context about what kind of site it is. Either way, it's not bad to have conservative associated with uncovering the truth.

How, exactly would the right of the people to have the ability to overthrow the [corrupt] government be secured EXCEPT through an individual right to own and use guns? If you are batting down the "sportsmen, hunters, collectors" nonsense, then I agree, but that is an argument about purpose, not the individual nature of the right, which was clarified in the Heller decision, by the way.
If you truly feel that the Constitution does not refer to the individual's right to own a gun, then that leaves only a "collective right" which does not appear anywhere [else] in the Constitution, and would of course defeat the ability to overthrow.

Firstly because, frankly, I think it's true. For every liberal-leaning post here, there must be a hundred leaning the other way. The blog doesn't specifically address conservatism per se, but it doesn't take a genius to realize it's not exactly The Nation.

More importantly, maybe, the label is being used in a laudatory context. Hooray for the noted debunker: Iran has been shown fraudulent yet again.

If we shun 'conservative' in such an instance, I think the cumulative effect is that there will be liberal blogs that score points (see Media Matters' recent, unfortunate smackdown of Fox News) and there will be amorphous apolitical blogs that score points.

So chin up, I say. The conservatives put a good lickin' on Iran, here.

This is crap.

There is a vast, deep liberal bias in American media. It's terrible. But to say that people are determined to see the insane leaders of Iran gain a nuclear bomb is utter trash.

And if they were indeed so determined, they wouldn't have shown the video and photos at all. They would have buried them. They certainly wouldn't have shown a problem-free four-missile launch. Instead they showed the video and photos -- as Charles rightly did -- because what the Iranians are up to is heinous and deserves attention. Right now.

re: #134 MajorPribluda

How, exactly would the right of the people to have the ability to overthrow the [corrupt] government be secured EXCEPT through an individual right to own and use guns? If you are batting down the "sportsmen, hunters, collectors" nonsense, then I agree, but that is an argument about purpose, not the individual nature of the right, which was clarified in the Heller decision, by the way.
If you truly feel that the Constitution does not refer to the individual's right to own a gun, then that leaves only a "collective right" which does not appear anywhere [else] in the Constitution, and would of course defeat the ability to overthrow.

I'm just saying the wording doesn't imply anything but the fact that they DEFINITELY didn't want anyone taking the right of militias to bear arms.

Guns though, as known by the Founding Fathers, serve more purpose than JUST over-throwing governments. They procure food, defend from wild animals and are excellent tools for self-defense and wonderful crime deterrents. If criminals know you're likely packing they might re-think assaulting you.

If we can get a conservative majority in both houses we can add to the constitution the individual's right to bear arms, but I honestly don't think the original intent had anything to do with that. The right to own a gun was considered OBVIOUS. If the people who wrote the constitution thought that your right to defend yourself was going to be threatened in a century or two they would have been more specific on the subject.

re: #168 Killgore Trout

Kilgore,

Let me give you different advice.

Try a gun out on a range.

If you still fear it, just don't get one.

Guns are dangerous devices in the hands of someone who is not confident in their ability to handle it.

If that's the case and you need personal protection there is pepper gel (my fave non-gun), and tasers (public ones are not real good because the attacker has to practically be on you to use it).

Old school non-gun weapon is a knife which in close quarters can be surprisingly effective but again you will be in close proximity to your attacker.

My 2 cents but do not ever feel you have to have a gun if it makes you uneasy.

Right now.

Cognito - There is such distrust of certain members of the MSM, many people believe that they would show the video and photos for the purpose of scaring people into insisting that our government remains hands-off rather than protecting us, which would result, in my opinion, in ensuring that the insane leaders of Iran gain the upper hand.

But I gave you an upding, anyhow, because . . . well, I sort of feel sorry for you.

The right to own a gun was considered OBVIOUS. If the people who wrote the constitution thought that your right to defend yourself was going to be threatened in a century or two they would have been more specific on the subject.

You're a little late, and a lot mistaken. Here is the SCOTUSblog's wiki on DC v Heller, which is balanced coverage of the decision, which explicitly finds that the right is is manifestly an individual right. Further, please see this brief filed in support of Mr. Heller's position, which hinges upon the right being individual in nature. Like every other right which exists. There is no such thing as a collective right, no matter what the race-mongers and the socialists would have us believe.

The Declaration of Independence and much of the Constitution as amended are concerned with setting down in writing things which were considered obvious, even self-evident. Stop chasing the canard that if something was considered obvious, then by definition, the Constitution does not protect it. It's exactly backwards.

Those magnum rounds kick like hell too.

Throw your 00 away and drop down to #4. With 00 yo uare sending 1.125 oz of shot, where as with #4 it is 1.33 oz, plus you increase your count from 9 to 27 a three fold increase in probable hits.
Anything over #1 bird is a good antipersonnel round.

OK lizards, single mom raising a male teenager alone is requesting some advice.

my 16 year old son just came to me for a heart to heart.

He's been in a "relationship" with a young lady for about two years now, and it seems that lately he's started to develop feelings for the girls' best friend.

He doesn't want to hurt this young lady, but he's having trouble denying his feelings. She found out about this "betrayal" today, and now she's collapsed into a teary, emotional heap at home. A hunger strike seems imminent.

My son feels like a heel.
But he hasn't changed his mind either.

What do the male lizards here recommend?

I just read your anedote to my sons. The older son, seventeen, said this, "the whole point of dating is to get to the end game, which is marriage." (I can't believe he's saying this, honestly!). Then he suggested that your son date the gal he actually likes and allow his ex-girlfriend to recover. He also suggests your son lay out the situation completely honestly to his ex-girlfriend, face-to-face.

For what its worth.

It is hard, isn't it, Irish Rose?

Interesting moment asking my son about what your son should do. Hmmmm.

re: #210 Irish Rose

Free Advice:

He needs to figure out first what he still feels for the GF of two years. If that remains strong and vibrant, then the other thing could well blow over, and they'll either get past it or not. These infatuations come up and go away just as quickly. At their age, they're practicing, but of course there's no receptivity for that in the ears of youth.
If that feeling is dull and fading, then that's the real problem, and the "next girl over" is just a symptom. This young romance may be over.

There are many courses of action, but I think that answering that question first will yield the most reasonable next steps.

But the fact is that guns are tools whose only real purpose is the taking of life. It's a big responsibility to own one, and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Here's another perspective for you Charles. I worked, briefly, on the USS Tennessee a submarine that carries nuclear weapons. The idea isn't that we want to launch, it's that they won't launch if they know we have them too. And believe me we have a lot of the things.

If you think of them as tools designed to kill and destroy you'd be right, but you'd also be right to say that those nuclear missiles just existing serves a higher purpose. Our freedom, at a time of such political timidness, rests upon our military might.

A gun can serve the same purpose. In a town where gun ownership is mandatory violent crime rates drop to zero.

He likes his ex-girlfriend's best friend? I think he should be cautioned about the whole dynamic between the two best friends. Losing your girlfriend or boyfriend is one thing, but perceiving a betrayal by your best friend is something completely different. If their friendship (the two girls) is seriously affected by this--I can't imagine it wouldn't be--this could spill into his new relationship and cause him a whole lot of grief.

I agree. He clearly needs to break up with the current girlfriend. His feelings are not there and staying with someone because they pitch a fit is asking for trouble.

As for the other girl, not worth the trouble. In all likelihood, they'll date awhile and then break up. All relationships end except the last one. Any potential gain (a nice girlfriend for a few months) isn't worth the loss of the friendship between the two girls. He shouldn't come between them for anything less than True Love, and it is doubtful at 16 that she is The One.

I also agree that, if she is willing to betray her friend, she may be suspect. Maybe she doesn't like him for him as much as she likes besting her friend. Maybe I'm unfairly judging the girl, but why risk it. All their hearts will recover. Probably long before you quit worrying about it.

Well, given your profession, I'd tend to doubt your statement that you're not big on responsibility.
But I don't own any firearms either - though I do know how to and have used them in my past life - a loooong time ago, though it sometimes seems like yesterday.
I don't own one because frankly my temper sometimes tends to almost get the better of me. Mom says she hears someone tampering with her window (ground floor apartment) and I go rushing in with my genuine NYPD Nightstick and a knife - I mean a real mofo of a knife; if I had a firearm, the temptation to use it because of my temper MIGHT be too great for me to resist and I'd regret it forever.
There ARE other means of self protection.
But please, don't say your not big on responsibility when you're responsible for the maintenance and repair of magnificent and sometimes extremely valuable musical instruments!

OK Everyone -

I will NOW give all 'y'all my take on the Second Amendment. The Militia Qualifier assumed that all physically capable "free" males were PART of the Militia.
Time has passed, and the BASE has enlarged to include both former slaves and females as potential members of that Militia. The Military service of both has proved this assumption to be true.
That being so - as ALL physically capable PERSONS are potentiallly the Militia, all such persons are AFFIRMED in their PRE-CONSTITUTIONAL right to Keep and Bear Arms.

-S-

The militia bit is not a qualifier. It neither limits nor expands the scope or power of the right affirmed in the next clause. The founders were pretty good about including "IF" when needed.

Deterrence only works if the other side thinks they have something to lose.

I worry in the particular case of Iran because its leaders have shown themselves to be enamored with the end-time cult of the 12th Imam.

We joke about the missing Imam but in their mind this is very real and is a pretext (much like the 72 virgins) to give up this existence in hopes of a better one after their version of Armageddon.

It's the windows I'm worried about. I have a huge picture window, and a front door with beveled glass windows. I'll stick with my 9mm or .380 and frangible bullets and take my chances.

One other thing to think about is the trigger action. I think that since I have never been in a situation that required me to point a gun at anyone. Double action trigger pull for the first round is a good idea. I fear that in the heat of the moment I could accidentally trigger a single action. It is a real deliberate feel to pull through the double action.

US Code - militia

TITLE 10 > Subtitle A > PART I > CHAPTER 13 > § 311. Militia: composition and classes

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

(313 of title 32 extends the age to 65 for regular military veterans)

Yep, that's the current code. When the constitution was written a "well regulated militia" was the armed locals banded together for local defense. The primary clause is "the people" shall be allowed to own guns. Our beloved fore-fathers knew that an armed population was the only defense against government tyranny. Nothing has changed, and our fore-fathers were absolutely correct. Why are Democrats so dead set for disarming the population anyway?

I've shot both. Wish I could remember the author of the article, its been thirty years, but it was in either G&A or National Hunter. That was when I switched from 00 to #4. Our police were also using the #4 for the same reason. Both loads can be magnumized adding punch.
Its an issue that can swing either way depending on the bias of the writer. In 1977 there was a lot being said on the subject.

re: #162 Cognito

This is crap.

There is a vast, deep liberal bias in American media. It's terrible. But to say that people are determined to see the insane leaders of Iran gain a nuclear bomb is utter trash.

And if they were indeed so determined, they wouldn't have shown the video and photos at all. They would have buried them. They certainly wouldn't have shown a problem-free four-missile launch. Instead they showed the video and photos -- as Charles rightly did -- because what the Iranians are up to is heinous and deserves attention. Right now.

You know, cog, you really need to go read up on some NYT history. Try the 30s and Walter Duranty, for example.

And, FYI, it is not "trash" to say that some people at the NYTs wouldn't be pleased if Iran got the bomb. They'd be especially thrilled if this happened while BushHitler was still president because they see "Evil Amerikka" as getting what it deserved.

You work in the MSM? Take your blinders off.

They can only get 3 out of 4 rockets to fire, and who knows what their true range is? We obviously can't trust their words or images for what their capabilities are, but we have intelligence on their efforts and we know what their intentions are. So we need to deal with these clowns before they can fire 100% of their rockets and can hit a good part of the globe with nuclear weapons. Maybe then we'll have some peace, love and understanding.

My wife, a shooting victim, had a real fear of guns when we married. If I took one out to shoot, I couldn't walk past her with it but had to exit by the back door. About three years ago she decided she needed to learn how to shoot. It was a long slow process. She can handle .22s, but not a 9mm or my .45.
Up until noise became an issue, we shot weekly.

re: #352 Dr. Shalit

There was a WWII era propaganda film short posted a while back, B&W with a German character explaining to an "average" American, the thread of collectivism. He said, to paraphrase, "there are always those who lay awake at night planning how they can get what you have."

I think the mindset has been discussed before. Some view the wealth of the world as a pie and what their slice of it --which means less for someone else. In this country, wealth can be created out of thin air , by those willing to dream, and work for it. WE are able, if we choose, to do this legally and ethically because of our system of laws.

I think it is very sad that there are many Americans that don't understand that.

Um, what is the Hotfix KB951758 ?!

It's a new Microsoft update. If you use Zone Alarm for a firewall (I recommend - it's fantastic), the new update doesn't communicate with it so well. So Zone Alarm cops a 'tude and decides to turn off innernets access, so there.

Last man came on the overnight open thread Tuesday and mentioned this, adding that you can get your innernets back by turning the firewall security down to 'medium.' I did that, and waited for an update. However, when I fired up my laptop tonight, I couldn't get online until I shut down Zone Alarm. Then I had to remove the recent update from Microsoft, download a new version of my firewall, then get the microsoft update again.

I've come a long way.

Meanwhile, at the Washington Post the article on the faked photo has completely vanished.

Would the various editors responsible for all this nonsensical behavior please stand next to this convenient parking ramp?

Not private or nearly as exciting as Kung Fu. My company has divisions over in China. We are setting up laboratories for failure analysis and I need to go over train the new techs in what I do.

Did someone say "failure analysis"?

Here you go.

An individual right assured in writing? Absolutely. I think the contention expressed here saying I was "wrong" was with the intent. Exactly my point. The right was self-evident in context of the times (overthrow of an oppressive government).

That's still pretty frickin' cool.

I had a cousin who did brickwork in Japan for a few years. Drew a hell of a salary while his company picked up room and board. How the hell does a company make a buck from that?

Have a good time there. Where are you going to be?

I majored in History.

AE Houseman

i have never understood the need to relive the past when the future remains unexperienced. I would, thus, never want to be 16, 17 ... 44, again. And when I'm 79, God willing, I'll not want to be 78 again.

Not that I'm currently capable of - nor interested in arguing the 2nd Amendment or Heller, but wth was Obama talking about when he talked about the need for an armed citizen volunteer force - the same size and armed the same way as the US Military? What is it he believes that any such group of Black men in black suits, white shirts, and black bowties can do that the US Military can't?
Wasn't he arguing for a sorta - super Militia - equal to the US Military in arms and equipment - what's he want them for?

Some folks think I'm a militia equal to the Army in terms of arms.

Well I can't give you a link, but it was the last sentance in his prepared text on voluntirism in the US (You know the one that give you x credit for tuition in return for y hours of unspecified community service?). It was reported by several commenters out here with links to the text itself.

Operate legally within the United States in a law enforcement status. I am simply stunned at how un-remarked-upon this bizarre notion of his has gone, considering that if a Republican had said it, he would be accused of all sorts of Fascist intentions by the Left and the MSM. And you know what? They would be correct.

It was from a speech he gave over the weekend, I believe. He said we weren't safe enough, and he would push for a civilian security force, the same size and just as well funded and trained as the US Military.

Made me think he was angling to take over the country by force.

Keep your powder dry.

I loved Gorky Park

Ihave thoroughly enjoed all of the Renkop books, although only GP is world-class stuff. Polar Star is a close second. Havana Bay, I enjoyed mostly because I got to meet my old friend Renko again. I hear that Stalin's Ghost is quite good, but haven't picked it up. I definitely will.

He called it a "civilian security force" and said it should be "as well funded" as the military, but then went on to talk about just making kids volunteer (forced volunteerism!) for community service. I really think the "security" stuff was blather. Even Obama doesn't seem to know what the hell Obama is talking about.

re: #388 Cartman

One only has to read our own history, Jim Crow and pre-Civil War slave laws, to understand that THE DEFINITION of a FREEMAN is the Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Stephen Halbrook goes into world history if you want a source for this. That Every Man Be Armed. He goes into history of BEAR ARMS from Athens thru British Common Law, and Saxon Codes to the present.

I have read several non-gun related books that concur with his research and find his writings concise.

In simple form, slaves, serfs and peasants were not allowed to carry arms. They were bound to their Master or to the Land. Not free to defend their own bodies. Only freemen could carry swords, firearms and in some cases in our own country knives or "dangerous sticks".

Dis-arming a populace has one purpose--to render the people unable to resist those who wish to have power.

Another wonderful resouce is David Kopel.

Cool. Don't cause vandalism in Singapore. You'll get a major spanking for that.

I actually met the dude about a year later. I won't say how or where, or why I won't mention that, but he was actually a really decent kid. Just got his ass in trouble.
