Apple's Epic Fail

Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 4:39:21 pm PDT

Today’s launch of the iPhone 3G didn’t exactly go as planned; Apple’s iTunes servers apparently couldn’t handle the gigantic traffic surge and many customers left stores without being able to activate their new objects of technolust: iPhone glitches derail Apple’s launch event magic.

Good thing I decided not to go stand in line.

I read this earlier and had to laugh that Apple can be as error-prone as MS when it comes to the roll-out of new products. Minor glitches, and this was a minor glitch, still won't deter the iPhiles, though.

I recently 'bought' a new cell phone. I put that in quotes because it was free after four years of service.

I asked the cute, young woman about a couple different phones, and she kept calling to attention the ability to take pictures, and text message. I don't text, for the most part, and I own a 7.1 MB digital camera if I want a picture of something.

When I reminded her for the 3rd time that I really don't 'text' people, she asked me, and I kid you not, "Then, how do you keep in touch with your friends?"

I was buying a phone.

Can this possibly get more insane?

As a result of the hysteria that Myers' ilk have promoted, at least one public official is taking it seriously. Thomas E. Foley is chairman of Virginia's First Congressional District Republican Committee, a delegate to the Republican National Convention and one of two Republican at large nominees for Virginia's Electoral College. His concern is for the safety of Catholics attending this year's Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, Myers' backyard. Accordingly, Foley has asked the top GOP brass to provide additional security while in the Twin Cities so that Catholics can worship without fear of violence. Given the vitriol we have experienced for simply exercising our First Amendment right to freedom of speech, we support Foley's request.

re: #73 bellamags

LOL! I know what you mean.

My former boss (and friend) and I had a conversation one day, about how people just fizzle out, eventually, on new "stuff".

For my grandmother - it was electronic calculators. She never got the hang of 'em. She just kept using my granddad's huge adding machine, one of those that had about 20 rows of keys that each started at 0 and went up to 9, I think.

For my former boss - it's his cell phone. He wants plain vanilla, no e-mail or texting or picture-taking or anything.

I love my cell phone (and my palm, and my digital cameras), but I'm afraid I'm about to reach the point where I've had it - I got a new digital camera, and find I prefer my old one simply because I'm familiar with it.

We came to the conclusion that this phenomenon doesn't really have anything to do with a particular age, it has more to do with when a person decides that enough is enough, that you have what you need and want, and you just don't want to spend the brainpower needed to learn something new.

We came to the conclusion that this phenomenon doesn't really have anything to do with a particular age, it has more to do with when a person decides that enough is enough, that you have what you need and want, and you just don't want to spend the brainpower needed to learn something new.

I think you're right.

Uh, oh...

I think I'm paying for her college tuition.

LOL! When our daughter was younger, and she would babble on and on, I would have to remind my husband to pay attention to what he was agreeing to, because she would throw in these requests for things or requests for permission to do something, and he would just be nodding his head and saying, uh-hunh, yeah, OK, fine . .

I hesitate to simply come out and proclaim "Epic FAIL". It's easy to forget about everything that just has to happen when you set a process in motion, deploy a new release, etc. This by no means is meant to excuse Apple + ATT, it was quite unfortunate to wait nearly four hours (the latter two within 60 feet of the store.)

This kind of thing happens in software. It happened to a deploy I was implementing this past Monday. What should have been a 15 minute exercise lasted 14 hours.

I guess that's why it's unfortunate, but not quite Epic FAIL.

I love PCs, and had a Palm Pilot (or Handspring).

I hated cell phones at first (only my family & secretary had the number - I hated being distrurbed in the car, whoch I saw as my time away from a phone). When texting came about, I hated it too (pushing the same damned button multiple times sucked).

I recently got a smart phone with a qwerty keyboard. I am getting into the texting a bit. My daughter sends up to 100 a day. We have an unlimited texting plan (and when her boyfriend went to an iPhone - and had to switch to AT&T so the calls between them were no longer free, they were ordered to text only communication).

I am tempted by the iPhone - but I am not certain how I will like the virtual keyboard. ANy thoughts?

When I plugged in my original Iphone to get the updates and new software, it all looked like it was clicking along fine, installed no problem.. then I plugged in my phone, synced as usual, and it all went nuts..... first a freeze, then when I got it unlocked, I was looking at the emergency call screen, in Chinese. Couldn't budge it.
Remembering something that had worked well before, I called ATT's residential department and they got me over to Apple after ten minutes or so..... was told about the overloaded servers, and to just leave it plugged in, refresh every so often, and it would eventually sync up on its own.
It took three hours, during which I had no cell phone, but......
she was right, and it did. The updates are really great..... gazillions of free apps, including one you can use for updating podcasts and blogs from your mobile. You're untethered, Charles!
Some of the apps are just surreal...... left me with .....how do they do that?

I was at the ATT store the other day to get a new phone, and one of the salesladies behind the counter was handling an iPhone, and she said, (and I quote) - "I hate this iPhone!".

What she didn't like about it was the touchscreen, and having to move her finger around the screen to do different things.

I've been tempted by the iphone, but in the end, I decided it just does too much stuff, meaning I would have to learn to navigate through too many buttons, to make it worth my while.

So I am very tempted to go for it. My only real qualms are the virtual keyboard and the accidental dialing while its in my pocket (I periodically have the other stuff in my pocket call the last dialed number.

There's bound to be a "lock" feature so that one doesn't make accidental calls.

My daughter just got a Palm phone - has a Palm PDA in it, etc, and has the full keyboard. She likes it, but she texts a lot.

There's also a phone at ATT by one of the makers - Sony Walkman? - that is designed to be a phone and play music. It even has a feature where you can "identify" songs - if you hear a song you like, turn on the feature, hold the phone up, and it will tell you the name of the song and who it's by. It requires an additional monthly fee. I know this because, of course, my teen had one at one time.

I've never understood why anyone would want to give money to a company that has such contempt for its customers.

My friend bought an ipod touch. He owns this device. It is not a lease. It is not a rental. Yet Apple has seen fit to design the device so that its owners are locked out of it. He had to use a safari exploit in order to gain access to it, which thanks to the DMCA is probably illegal even though he is the owner of the device. There are hundreds of useful applications and neat things that can be installed on an ipod touch....but not until it has been "hacked."

I won't give money to a company that acts like that. I don't care how "cool" their products are (my dick is big enough on its own thank you very much).

Once upon a time, long, long ago, in the days before the IBM PC even existed, Apple's philosophy was one of openness. That philosophy, combined with brilliant computer engineering ala Woz, and great marketing, is what put Apple on the map.

I cut my teeth on an Apple II+, but I wouldn't buy a Mac or any Apple products today. I'm not going to reward a company that treats its customers like a necessary evil.

I think that treating your customer with contempt is letting your equipment crash even with good maintenance, letting it be vulnerable to all sorts of viruses, etc,,,,,and loading up your consumer pc's with all sorts of garbage software.
I've dealt with Apple customer service a few times, and they have always been much more accessible and friendly than, say, Microsoft reps...... and I switched to a mac after using the Iphone for a few months and realizing how much BS I put up with from Windows.
I don't care if their corporate/PR department thinks its too cool for school..... you can ignore that. The bottom line is, what does it do and how does it work?

re: #198 reine.de.tout

Seriously, to hate the Iphone you must be over-thinking it.... or expecting it to replace your laptop entirely.
It is so user-friendly that a child can handle it and figure out how it works, and I have had a ' smart ' phone or two that I never did exactly get the hang of, reinforcing my techno-inferiority conplex.
These are easy.

IMy friend bought an ipod touch. He owns this device. It is not a lease. It is not a rental. Yet Apple has seen fit to design the device so that its owners are locked out of it.

The original iPhone was intended to be a closed platform, but with the 3G models and the update to iPhone 2.0, software developers can now use the same programming interfaces that Apple does, and the hack to run user applications is no longer necessary. This is apparently du to Apple embracing the inevitable and responding to consumer demand for the iPhone to be a platform for third-party developers.

The available apps are pretty amazing.

(Alas, despite standing in the Memphis heat this morning for almost 90 minutes, the AT&T store I was at only had sufficient stock for about half of the people waiting in line. The stupidest part is that the AT&T associates were not permitted to tell you exactly how much stock they had on hand until they were down to the last few iPhones. I'm told that the local Apple store had not yet sold out by this afternoon, but if they were having all this trouble with in-store activation, I'm not so surprised.)

and 199 tradewind

I find it very ironic that Apple for years couldn't gain traction because of their over-priced, closed source equipment. Thus Windows became ubiquitous. (almost 1 billion computers worldwide. Windows operating system in approx. 90% = 900,000,000 Windows computers in the world)

Now, if it weren't for all the "crappy" windows computers in the world, there wouldn't be a network and user base for the i/phone/pod to be usable.

re: #188 krm

My only real qualms are the virtual keyboard and the accidental dialing while its in my pocket (I periodically have the other stuff in my pocket call the last dialed number.

The iPhone uses an on-screen slider to activate/unlock it, making accidental activation much less likely than with a physical or virtual keypress.

(Not only is the iPhone hard to activate accidentally, it seems today it was rather tough to activate on purpose, as well.)

re: #201 Dar ul Harb

So, they've learned their lesson. I remember hearing about 1g and the closed system and figured they'd choke themselves like they've done before but this is good news. Apple makes good equipment and has good ideas and as noted they do a better job with customer service but they've been too anal retentive in the past and paid for it with reduced market share.

If they let other manu.'s develop apps and also add-ons then they might even get me to buy one someday.

re: #202 jcw46

I find it very ironic that Apple for years couldn't gain traction because of their over-priced, closed source equipment.

Once upon a time they had a much higher price for their stuff and much higher quality as well (using higher-performance SCSI for hard drives instead of IDE, a technology usually reserved for servers on the Windows side, and integrating multimedia and graphics capabilities into their desktops, which typical PCs charged extra for). Now the prices have come down because the Macs are essentially using the same commodity hardware as PCs, and Apple has been outsourcing its manufacturing to vendors, some of which have had some quality control issues. A lot of the technological distinctiveness that made a Mac a Mac has been discarded, so the pressure is really on Apple to get the software and industrial design right. They're victims of their own recent successes, so the glitches today loom larger than they might otherwise do. Apple has always cultivated a reputation of being a prestige brand, so customers are going to be more disappointed if the perceived quality and value doesn't meet their expectations.

One app that I was thinking this morning would be pretty cool to port to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform is the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME).

Having a whole 1980's vintage arcade in your pocket would be pretty cool, as would playing Pac-Man with the tilt controller.

re: #37 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

I use mine maybe once every three or four days. I have to remind myself to charge the damn thing. If you go with a company like Tracfone, all it costs you (after you buy the phone) is maybe $20 every other month to plug extra minutes into it. With as much as I use my cell phone, it doesn't make sense for me to get one with all the bells and whistles.

I was cruising through Temecula this morning.... the line was halfway around the block.

Personally, if I ever buy an iPhone, I'd rather wait a year or so. That way, they might have all the bugs worked out or around....

212 Northpaw  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 8:52:28pm

I updated my non-3G phone yesterday from a link that, well, was available for the taking from Apple's own website. Then I uploaded five apps to my iPhone and thought not much of it. This was yesterday. Today the wailing and gnashing of teeth was epic, and I just had to kind of laugh. Apple could have avoided all of this by spreading out their 2.0 extravaganza. But no, and there you go.

213 6pat6  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 9:07:13pm

Why again, would I want this apple thing again? 3G, 2D, woo-wee!

Hell, just give me a damn cell phone that all I have to do is push a button and say "Hello", then push the same button to disconnect. I don't give a rat's ass about texting, trolling the net, have a terabyte of bullshit in my hand, or any of that nonsense...just give me a cellphone where I can actually TALK to someone! That's all I want!

214 parisparamus  Fri, Jul 11, 2008 9:42:35pm

Sorry, I'm big on Apple and Macs, but the iPhone's sound quality, probably AT&T's network still sounds too inferior to me. I can't do serious business with that crap. Plus, AT&T's network is iffy, even in NYC. Apparently, there are too many people to numb to notice.

When ATT fixes its sound quality and network quality, I'll consider an iPhone. until then, I am a prisoner of Verizon.

218 Jake Sisko  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 8:58:48am

Just to offer some balance to all of the "epic fail" comments... that wasn't my experience yesterday. After standing in line outside my local AT&T store for 4 hours, I was in and out of the store within 10 minutes with a brand new 8GB iPhone (they had already sold out of the 16GB's). I am a new subscriber so I didn't have another number or account to transfer, so that may be why my experience was a smooth one. My new phone service was available immediately.

While I was waiting, when I was about 12th in line, the forward motion of the queue seemed to stop for about 30 minutes or so. A member of the AT&T staff came out to tell us part of the reason why... some of my fellow customers had LifeLock or other similar services blocking access to their credit and had neglected to inform those services to expect a credit check before going to buy their phones. Maybe this AT&T guy was B.S.-ing us, but it just goes to show you that in situations like this, it isn't always the vendor's fault when the line isn't moving-- sometimes it's the ignorant fools in line ahead of you that are stopping up the works.

All your friend has to do is spend $10 to get the latest firmware and then he too can download and install apps from iTunes. No hacking required.

I'm not going to reward a company that treats its customers like a necessary evil.

Oh please... would Apple have opened up the iPhone to 3rd party development if they were as "closed" as you say? People demanded, they listened.

Got mine this morning. Lined up at a store in downtown Vancouver on Friday the 11th at 6:30AM, I was 12th in line. At 11:00AM not one person had exited with a phone, all the server problems. I had to leave so they took my name and number and guaranteed me a phone. I picked mine up at 7:30AM today. I had to settle for the 8GB as the 16GB sold out in the first 10 minutes.
