Judge Orders Islamic Jihad Terrorist Freed on Bond

Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 5:42:25 pm PDT

Judge Leonie Brinkema, last seen presiding over the farcical trial of Zacarias Moussaoui, has now ordered that Islamic Jihad kingpin Sami Al-Arian be freed on bond.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A federal judge is overruling government objections and has ordered free on bond a former professor who has been in custody since 2003 as part of a wide-ranging terrorism investigation.

It’s unlikely that former University of South Florida professor Sami Al-Arian will immediately be set free. It’s expected that he’ll be transferred to immigration authorities since he’s subject to deportation.

But U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema’s order could trigger provisions that bar the government from prosecuting Al-Arian for criminal contempt.

For more details, see the Investigative Project on Terrorism: Judge Orders Al-Arian’s Release on Bond.

Al-Arian’s appeal for bond included 60 pages of letters from supporters of his, including three university professors who had worked with his think tank, the World and Islam Studies Enterprise (WISE):

* John Esposito, director of Georgetown University’s Prince Alwaleed Bin-Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, told Brinkema he has known Al-Arian for 20 years and saw him as “a man of conscience with a strong commitment to peace and social justice.” Esposito described WISE as “a think-tank that brought together prominent scholars and experts from academia, the U.S. government and the media.”

* Esposito’s Georgetown colleague, John Voll, wrote of Al-Arian’s “devotion to his family,” and that he has “gotten to know [Al-Arian] through his children,” concluding that “it is highly improbable that [Al-Arian] would break the trust involved in being released on bond.” Voll, the dissertation mentor of Al-Arian’s son, Abdullah - currently a doctoral student at Georgetown - noted that Abdullah “will be teaching a course in the History Department curriculum this coming fall semester.”

* University of Maryland professor Charles Butterworth wrote to Brinkema that he held WISE “in high esteem, especially because of Sami Al-Arian’s excellent management of it.”

In fact, WISE was home to four members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) governing board, including Al-Arian, current PIJ leader Ramadan Shallah, Basheer Nafi and Mazen Al-Najjar. While it did produce academic work, it also received funding from PIJ accounts in addition to substantial financial support from the think-tank that is now targeted by the Virginia grand jury.

The govt. may decide to deport him rather than have him stand trial in this judge's courtroom with the chance of her ruling for the defense in crucial pre-trial motions, weakening the govt.'s case.

If he is deported he will be barred from returning. If he is found NG he could be here for a very long time.

"Al-Arian faces two counts of criminal contempt for his refusal to testify before federal grand juries investigating terror financing by a northern Virginia think tank, the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), with which he had worked closely. Prosecutors granted him immunity in exchange for his truthful testimony and his defiance triggered two civil contempt orders."

He agreed to testify, truthfully, about terror financing in the USA in exchange for being granted immunity from prosecution, then he refused to testify after being granted immunity. Then this appeasement Judge orders him released from custody pending further prosecution and deportation. What a farce our country's political and judicial system has become.

From Redstate:
BREAKING: Bank Collapses. Feds cite Sen. Chuck Schumer as "immediate cause" of collapse

Federal regulators just seized and shut down IndyMac, a major mortgage specialist.

The Pasadena, Calif., thrift was one of the largest savings and loans in the country with about $32 billion in assets. It now joins an infamous list of collapsed banks, topped by Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co., which failed in 1984 with $40 billion of assets.

IndyMac specialized in Alt-A loans, a type of mortgage that can often be offered to borrowers who don't fully document their incomes or assets. The company sold most of the loans it originated but continued to hold some on its books. As defaults piled up, IndyMac's finances deteriorated.

The bank will be run by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., a federal regulator, and will reopen Monday.

Now the question is, did Senator Chuck Schumer cause IndyMac's collapse? The Office of Thrift Supervision, that regulates entities like IndyMac, says "the immediate cause" of IndyMac's collapse was Senator Chuck Schumer.

In a written statement, the Office of Thrift Supervision, which regulated IndyMac, said "the immediate cause" of the failure was statements made by Sen. Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat. Mr. Schumer in late June publicly raised concerns about the bank's solvency.

"Although this institution was already in distress, I am troubled by any interference in the regulatory process," said OTS Director John Reich

Nice going, Senator, you publicity-seeking idiot.

yep.

The director of the Office of Thrift Supervision, John Reich, blamed IndyMac's failure on comments made in late June by Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.), who sent a letter to the regulator raising concerns about the bank's solvency. In the following 11 days, spooked depositors withdrew a total of $1.3 billion. Mr. Reich said Sen. Schumer gave the bank a "heart attack."

Now I just need to find a woman insane daring enough to have my demon spawn kids.

As for pussbag schumer, part of what he did was to punish an eeeeevil capitalist company. The other part is he was hoping to further push the economy towards recession thinking it will benefit the dims come election time.

Schumer would yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater if he thought it would benefit the Democrats in November.

Which is basically what he did.

My dad enlisted in the Army for Vietnam, but the the same thing that kept him out got me. I did 4 years of JROTC. The only reason I didn't enlist (DEP) before I graduated HS was because all my older friends who went in before me said it was pure hell under clinton. It's an old quote from Patton, describing his aggressive view on war, and also explaining how disdainfully he regarded martyrdom. War, in his view, was entirely about killing the enemy. Nothing else mattered. I don't think anything regarding American dead was implied. If I was mistaken, well, oops.

That's my normal drink. I've found a great Cali zinfandel I absolutely love, and a very playful pinot noir by the same winery. They also have a really good cabernet I enjoy on occasion.

A Molson Golden Ale or Moosehead would do. I just got back home from a vacation in Brainerd MN. I DO NOT miss mosquitos in any way, shape, or form! I actually dropped the F-bomb in front of my 12 year old son because I was being eaten alive on the golf course.

I'm tearing up reading this "feel good" story on Yahoo News:

Pakistani religious school releases Ga. teens
Two American-born teens forced by their father to attend a religious school in Pakistan for nearly four years have returned home to Atlanta after a documentary filmmaker pushed for their release.

Poor little kids!

The boys' father, Fazal Khan, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he sent them to the madrassa because he wanted them exposed to Islam. He said he had tried to bring his sons home but the boys couldn't get exit visas.

Damn that Bush!

"You don't know how badly I want to go back," he says. "If there was a plane right now, I'd just go step on it and go back to America."

Innocent victims!

But after a couple of years in the madrassa, Noor says he is glad his father sent him to the school. He says he doesn't believe Muslims were responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Uh, what?

"Not one Jew died that day. That is what they say," he says in the film.

Never mind. Fuck 'em.

My In-laws used to have a place up there. I miss it a great deal. We do not have Mosquitos back east. It is nice to go outside and not be pestered by them. The biting flys would annoy you at waterside during the day and at night you would just be inundated by the mozzies. I have to remind myself why I went up there again.

I say throw all of them out of office and start new. I'm soooo confused about the law... if a person is arrested for hiring a hit man to knock off their spouse, are they released on bail either while awaiting trial or during the trial? So their masks have slipped, eh? Well, they can spend their time in the fundamentalist chat rooms quarreling about which of their fellow Christians is going to Hell, and about whether full immersion baptism is necessary for salvation.

And when they're done with that, they can do some speaking in tongues, snake-handling, and falling flat on their faces in the Holiness of the Lord.

Somehow, I don't think Jesus, a sensible Rabbi, would be pleased with this pack of lawyers, Pharisees, and hypocrites.

re: #168 Hard Right

Thanks. I had hoped to carry on something of a military tradition.
My grandafther was at Pearl Harbor. My Great Grandfather was a WWI vet.
My dad enlisted in the Army for Vietnam, but the the same thing that kept him out got me. I did 4 years of JROTC. The only reason I didn't enlist (DEP) before I graduated HS was because all my older friends who went in before me said it was pure hell under clinton. I had hoped he wouldn't be re-elected so I went to college to become an officer in the meantime. That's when the problem manifested itself.
It's hard to know my countrymen are there and I'm here. It's as though I've missed out on what I was meant to be.

It's cool, just keep paying your taxes...thats' how I make my living. ;)

At least you have more of a family tradition than I do. My grandfather was in the Battle of the Bulge (101st) and then there is me. And one uncle is a retired MSG. That's it.
