i am interested in what some of you lizards think about the fed take over of IndyMac?
link

specifically

IndyMac came under fire last month from U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, who said lax lending standards and deposits purchased from third parties left it on the brink of failure. In the 11 business days after Schumer explained his concerns in a June 26 letter, depositors withdrew more than $1.3 billion, the OTS said.

Money is down and will continue on that trajectory -

1) his FISA, gun and Iraq changes have taken the sails out of the netroots.

2) gas prices are taking away those $25 contributions.

His class in Gan (nursery school) was taught to make challah Friday AM, and his actually turned out well. I have a feeling that the teachers helped a lot. ;)

It's great, as there are 3 toddlers to each teacher for the summer gan, and the ratio is about the same during the school year.

Not this year with the dems in charge of the legislative branch. IMO, they believe it is to their advantage for the economy to tank with the thought that Bush will be blamed and that they will then win the White House AND sweep the House and Senate.

Not sure that strategy will work. If the Republicans had a pair, they'd be shouting from the rooftops that the oil price problem can be laid at the feet of the dems due to the past 40 years of environmental policies choking the ability to produce and refine domestically. They could further point out that the policies pushed by the dems for "affordable housing" for low income people resulted in so many bad loans.

/that is *if* the Republicans had a pair and a spine, which, I'm afraid, is sadly lacking as evidenced by McCain throwing Gramm under the bus instead of using it as a teachable moment.

Yup, but FannieMae and FreddieMac bonds are selling like hotcakes. Don't forget that between the two, they hold something like a TRILLION dollars in mortgage debt and the Fed Lending window was opened to them tonight for any short term capital needs.
The government isn't gonna let either one go down the drain, nor will it need to take either one over.

Of course, why would the Congress of Baboons block the cheap n' dirty money pipeline between the taxpayer's dollars and La Raza?

$30 million in June

The Wall Street Journal quoted people close to the Obama campaign as saying his total contributions in June would likely be just over $30 million.

Asked about the newspaper's figure, Obama's communications director, Robert Gibbs, said it was "way off the mark."

Asked if he meant it was more, he said he did. The campaign probably would not issue the June figure until close to the filing deadline of July 20, Gibbs added.

This isn't official.
If the numbers are so good why won't they release them yet?

Do not post broad-brush smears against US service people. Do not blame the troops for the mistakes of their officers or their Commander-in-Chief.

They ARE advocating our loss in Iraq. The "blame the CINC, not the troops" tactic is only used to avoid the bad pub they got for attacking all soldiers during the Vietnam War. They still feel the same way about the military. It just makes me sick.

Macha was a woman - or possibly a faerie - who moved into the house of an Irish minor chieftain and married him. While she was pregnant, her husband was to attend a market at which Cormac, the King in Ulster, would be present. Macha warned her husband to be careful what he said.

Cormac had brought his fastest team of horses, and he boasted of their speed. Macha's husband said, "My wife is faster."

So Cormac had Macha brought forth to race his horses, even though she was heavily pregnant and going into labor. No man of Ulster would intercede with the king for her, so she ran the race - and beat the fastest horses in Ulster - while in labor.

When she crossed the finish line, she fell down, and while giving birth, laid a curse on all the men of Ulster, that whenever they were in danger, they should lie for three days in pains as of a woman in labor.

She gave birth to twins, who became bulls, and were the cause of the Tain Bo Coullaigh.

That no doubt accounts or the fact that while the stock price of each has dropped, bond traders have been telling me all day that they can't sell enough Fannie or Freddie Bonds.

Who is Welcome on Democratic Underground, and Who is Not

Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other statists Members are expected to be completely supportive of the collective and not deviate from those ideals. Our objective is to remain a complete statist echo chamber and we will cover our ears and scream really loudly if anybody tries to confuse us with facts. If you don't agree with statist values of big government, big taxes, and total government control -- don't bother to post here, don't try to annoy us with facts, we aren't going to listen; you will be banned and won't be allowed back, no matter how much you beg or how long you spend at re-education camp.

Relationship to the Democratic Party
Democratic Underground is, on paper, in accordance with federal election rules, a completely independent organization from the Democrat party, despite our name. However, we are completely in the tank for the Democrats and will do whatever we can in our power to get them elected.

Democratic Underground is not affiliated with the Democratic Party in any way, and comments posted here are not representative of the Democratic Party or its candidates. [The democrat lawyers made us put this here to keep us on the up-and-up with FEC rules; wink, wink, nudge, nudge]

Someone recently pointed me to online instructions for making a homemade disco ball with CD/DVD fragments and a glue gun... so I bought a 5-inch styrofoam ball at the craft store and have been cutting up discs and hot-gluing like a madman tonight. Soon, very soon, I will be the coolest guy on the block with exclusive invitation-only dance parties in my bedroom.

Thus far I have found that commercially produced DVDs (as opposed to home-burned ones) work the best, since the plastic they are made of will cut into squares, triangles, and other polygons without splintering and shattering and possibly blinding you with plastic shrapnel, as commercial CDs tend to do.

I tried both CD-R and DVD-R discs, as well, and found that although they were easy to cut into the shapes I needed, the reflective metallic layer tended to crinkle and separate from the clear plastic layer during the cutting and/or gluing process.

Conclusion: Hit the yard sales and buy up some crappy old DVDs at $1 apiece. Would be kinda cool to make a disco ball entirely out of unwanted Michael Bay movies and other "summer blockbuster" overstock.

By the way, I wrapped the styrofoam ball in aluminum foil (using a few dabs from the hot glue gun to secure the foil) before attaching the cut-up DVDs, so that any gaps between the mirror-tiles would be less conspicuous.

I'll post pictures on my blog whenever it's eventually done!

re: #163 Throbert McGee

I used to make clocks out of old Laser Discs that had begun to delaminate and were unplayable. One Christmas I must have given away close to 30 clocks as gifts.

Crisis deepens as Big Bank fails

IndyMac Bank, a prolific mortgage specialist that helped fuel the housing boom, was seized Friday by federal regulators, in the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history.

IndyMac is the biggest mortgage lender to go under since a fall in housing prices and surge in defaults began rippling through the economy last year -- and it likely won't be the last. Banking regulators are bracing for a slew of failures over the next year as analysts say housing prices have yet to bottom out.

The collapse is expected to cost the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. between $4 billion and $8 billion, potentially wiping out more than 10% of the FDIC's $53 billion deposit-insurance fund.

[...]

The director of the Office of Thrift Supervision, John Reich, blamed IndyMac's failure on comments made in late June by Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.), who sent a letter to the regulator raising concerns about the bank's solvency. In the following 11 days, spooked depositors withdrew a total of $1.3 billion. Mr. Reich said Sen. Schumer gave the bank a "heart attack."

Remind me to never bank at a place which Schumer may know about....

CFTC says no evidence of oil manipulation, hoarding

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission told Congress on Thursday there is no evidence that market traders are working together to push up crude oil prices or that oil supplies are being hoarded.

"We have no evidence that people are hoarding oil," CFTC Chairman Walter Lukken told a House Appropriations subcommittee.

He also said the CFTC doesn't "see systemically in the current market" that traders are "working together" to drive up prices.

[...]

Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who chairs the House subcommittee, accused the CFTC of not doing enough to rein in excessive speculation and protect consumers from soaring fuel prices.

Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro, who chairs the House subcommittee, accused the CFTC of not doing enough to rein in excessive speculation and protect consumers from soaring fuel prices.

[...]

Lukken said high crude prices are due to flat oil production around the world that is unable to keep up with growing global oil demand.

"We're consuming more than we're producing," Lukken said.

The Democratic house committee has been banging the drum about "speculators" so loudly... problem is there is no evidence.

"Totem, an object (as an animal or plant) serving as the emblem of a family or clan and often as a reminder of its ancestry; also : a usually carved or painted representation of such an object"*

E.g., while the picture of a "Dapper Squirrel" might not necessarily signify that the poster of such image is in any way descended from such said squirrel (as dapper as it may be), it does admit an association between the totem-poster and the image (viz. totem-in-question), that in the context of that poster being associated with a particular group/family/clan (perhaps a blog), specifically by the repeated act of using that image for self identification within that group, the image then denotes association/ancestry within that group, and can be said to be... wait for it... a TOTEM.

On this day in history, July 12th, 1944

FRANCE: The US forces capture Hill 92, just 2 miles east of St. Lo.

Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., son of President Theodore Roosevelt and assigned to the US First Army, dies of a heart attack in Normandy, France. He was 56. Roosevelt was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Normandy on 6 June 1944. The citation for the medal reads, "Citation: for gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, in France. After two verbal requests to accompany the leading assault elements in the Normandy invasion had been denied, Brigadier General Roosevelt's written request for this mission was approved and he landed with the first wave of the forces assaulting the enemy-held beaches. He repeatedly led groups from the beach, over the seawall and established them inland. His valor, courage, and presence in the very front of the attack and his complete unconcern at being under heavy fire inspired the troops to heights of enthusiasm and self-sacrifice. Although the enemy had the beach under constant direct fire, Brigadier General Roosevelt moved from one locality to another, rallying men around him, directed and personally led them against the enemy. Under his seasoned, precise, calm, and unfaltering leadership, assault troops reduced beach strong points and rapidly moved inland with minimum casualties. He thus contributed substantially to the successful establishment of the beachhead in France." The medal was posthumously awarded on 28 September 1944

Normal affectionate activities, that's what our Congress of Baboons is about to engage in with the honest hard-working U.S. taxpayer-citizen, as they bend them over the barrel head to bail out the financial indigents using the FHA as the economic suppository of choice.

they're a great band, if you don't mind bombastic, unimpressive, self absorbed 80's rock, without the talent of the 80's bands that made that genre w*rk. they're like ELP, without any of the letters, or Yes, with out Squire, Howe, Wakeman, and whats his name..... they're not bad musicians, they're just unoriginal, uninspiring, and frankly, IMHO, boring as shit.

re: #444 littleoldlady

Gotcha.

Speaking of which, sorta, my best friend's cat just had 6 kittens tonight. My friend got a kitten just before she moved, and during the moving process wasn't able to get her kitten spayed at the earliest time you can do it. After she was in her new house, went to find the kitten to take her to the vet and the cat was gone. For a week, she just disappeared. When she reappeared, she was preggers. Friend not too thrilled. LOL

You know what's good about being 50+? Your acceptable datable age range increases by a factor of pi. Used to be 25-35. Now its 35-60.

448 Mel Lono  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 1:46:04am

Someone close to me sent this today to me and my brothers and sisters etc. Below is my response.

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours, or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame, and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So too your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built. Not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, or sacrifice that enriched, empowered, or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.
What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom, and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

i was sitting at the back of a class room when the 40th ID (M) CG asked the question "What is the mission of the Cavalry?" to the troops who were about to complete their 19D conversion class. naturally, they all froze. Merlin & i were there since we were the assigned medics, and whither they went, so did we. in the silence, i popped up with my answer.....

the General laughed, so everyone else did too....

it helped that he had, like many, a strong grasp of history, and we'd met a few days before, as i was the only person not scared to walk up & talk to him at the 40th HHC club he'd established. i had thanked him for the opportunity to be treated as a rational, responsible adult, rather than a child.

Quick question for the Lizard hoard. I'm watching the mini series John Adams and there is a scene (at the end of part V) where John Adams moves into the presidential residence of the time only to find it ransacked by Washington and the previous staff. Did it actually happen or was this depiction of Washington looting the Presidential residence an attempt to minimize Clintons looting of the white house?

The bodies of Sgt. Alex Jimenez and Pvt. Byron W. Fouty have been found after being captured and missing in Iraq in May 2007. Pfc. Joseph J. Anzack Jr. was captured at that time and found killed.

First, God rest their souls and may we their your service. All of our troops are exceptional, but these guys were special.

Second, where is the outrage from the MSM? Soldiers in uniform taken prisoner and killed? Apparently they put up such a fight that they didn't give the bastards who captured them a chance to make a video of them surrounded by the ski mask clowns.

A Koran of the ROP is rumored to have been flushed and the MSM freaks. Then there's Haditha. How great would the frenzy be if enemy were killed while in our captivity? Where's the outrage from Murtha? The U.N.? Where's Senator Lurch raging in front of the cameras? Soldiers in uniform taken prisoner and killed. Yet murderers in civvies get ACLU lawyers appointed for them at Gitmo.

These soldiers deserve to be remembered. They and their buddies, all volunteers, stand between us and the throat slitters, regardless how the cowards and weasels among us ignore them.

May we earn and deserve their sacrifice.

Another big bank bites the dust, football player in charge.
Loan officers give a $25,000 dollar a year street sweeper a $750,000 dollar loan on a bloated $350,000 dollar house.
The street sweeper then takes out a $200,000 equity loan and cant pay it back.
Why should criminals rob banks when they can go to the football player in charge and get a tax free loan?
Sheeesh.

bet your ass it is a mental recession

and their lives encircled by your love.
Amen.

Hey, if anyone is flying into JFK in the near future, look out your window: you may be able to see fellow passengers up close and personal!

On my flight to Ukraine (in which the weather was perfect and I was rewarded with many absolutely spectacular views) an Air France plane passed under our jet and flew alongside us for a short time before heading south. It seemed pretty close, although I never found out how close. Not close enough to see the passengers and crew waving white flags, though.

We are never deceived, we deceive ourselves.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Front page this morning on the Internet was the warning about British food shortages and how people are going to have to be more selective in what they buy because of shortages and prices, and to utilize it all, not waste.

While this makes sense to all of us, the idea that food shortages is a necessary evil that we accept and cannot change is absurd. This is but another dimension of the climate change frenzy that governments have bought into. It is a tool of the anarchists, the Marxists, the globalists to push an agenda that apparently has forced a first world country to second tier status and rapidly pushing it into the third world. And in part because of ethanol and our failure to drill for oil. Yes it is our failure because we drive the global economy in most instances. We need to be energy independent to continue to grow our economy. When we are healthy, the rest of the world benefits.

Shortages of oil relative to demand has pushed the price up tremendously. If we were to conserve from now to dooms day, it wouldn't produce another drop of oil. And oil not only supplies the world with energy, it also has major side markets like plastics and other chemical applications. We have to have more oil, period.

Get the ethanol monkey off everyone's back and start planting crops to feed rather then to fuel, while reducing legislative restrictions on oil production and increasing incentives for oil alternatives to energy supplies.

It is embarrassing to think that a world giant is being destroyed in part by the great hoax of climate change. It is not global warming, but global greed that has taken the first world and is attempting to make it third world. Instead of raising people up to make them more equal, it is tearing everyone down to the least common denominator.

God help us all.

Today also marks the 2d anniversary of the capture of Goldwasser and Regev by Hizbullah, sparking the Lebanon war two years ago. Both men are still held by Hizbullah and are likely dead.

Hizbullah now has tacit control in Lebanon securing a veto option in the government just days ago. Lebanon will suffer for this as Syria and Iran have both successfully thwarted a democracy in the country.

I was just thinking.... Our system is supposed to have a series of checks and balances that keep any one branch of government from overstepping their authority and harming the country. Where is the responsibility of the other two branches of government when the Legislative branch chooses to spend our Social Security funds, overload their budgets with pork, and then participate in self enrichment on our backs? Don't tell me that we can vote them out becaus they can do too much damage in the time that they serve. Where are the responsible civil servants that can enunciate the word, "NO!'?

The Chicago Tribune (which is way in the tank for Obama), has a front page story this morning.
The gist is that Obama has always been for faith based initiatives.
You know, that he is not just coming to that for political reasons.
The proof? As An IL State Senator, Obama arranged a $200, 000 state grant to an urban venture capital fund for a non-profit group run by Jesse Jackson.
They actually think tht it was a good thiong to funnel cash to that hustler Jackson!

Dr. Michael DeBakey has died

I had the pleasure of meeting him on a few occasions. He had a presence about him which I have rarely seen in my life.

And it is very true, as the article says, he give his time to the rich and the poor. My uncle, in the 70's, was flown from the Bronx Ny to Houston, to be operated on by DeBakey.

He was on pulic assistance, the operation and recovery cost almost 1/2 million, and it was all taken care. Bobby (my uncle) had had 8 heart attacks up to that time, and 2 open heart surgeries.

Debakey was a saint to my family. When my uncle Bobby DID die, it was not because of his heart.

Hey Tigger! I too am sorta stuck in the 70's and liked all the bands you listed, except Foreigner

Dishwalla.
But my favorite group of that era didn't even make your list: Crosby, Stills, Nash (and sometimes) Young!

Well, notice I said I'm "mostly" stuck in the 70's. I do like some more recent bands. Nightwish is a Finnish "Symphonic Metal" band that started in the mid-90's, I only discovered them recently in a roundabout fashion--from Celtic Woman's cover of "Walking in the Air" to Tarja Turunen's solo performances of it, to Tarja's stint as lead singer of Nightwish (she was fired from the band a couple years ago). They are sort of like Evanescence, Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil. However, the main reason I liked them was Tarja, a gorgeous, opera-trained singer. I love symphonic music and opera and I also love rock, so this was a great combination to me. Unfortunately Nightwish now has a pedestrian pop singer on lead vocals, so I'm not that interested in them anymore.

Dishwalla is late 90's...pretty catchy songs with interesting lyrics, such as "Counting Blue Cars" and "Opaline."

From the moment Charles first noted that the photo was hinky, I reminded my readers that Iran has repeatedly put out bogus information about their tests.

And EU Referendum noted the recycling of images.

Iran's claims often don't pass the sniff test.

No, no I don't think you're being cynical at all!
I figure that sometime around noon Obama's speechwriters will have found a way to say something about how broken up the Senator is over the passing of his good friend Tony Snow - and I wouldn't be surprised if a slightly photoshopped photo of Obama and Snow showed up, either!

It would not be a surprise if they did a photo shop. See it would be Barry's TRUTH.
Kind of like his assertion that his parents met in Selma when he was four. That was his truth. I have trouble with the concept.

Good question - rocket launches are one thing. Going where they're supposed to is quite another.

If they had 75% launch success, who knows what their CEP is. Maybe they figure that if they launch enough stuff, something might hit a target.

That's the Hizbullah and Hamas strategy, and both get their rockets and missiles from Iran.

This is a loss for his family and friends, sincerest condolences to them. He ran his race well. Tony Snow helped us all to fight more hopefully and cheerfully in the great contest of ideas. Thank you, Tony, for your public life in the fray. You are irreplaceable.

Note: Huffpo turned off comments of course; Kos diary on Tony tries to be decent, most commenters so far, also try. It is painfully obvious, however, the hallmark of progressives is the conviction that they are better human beings than other people.

Proggies are not better people They prove day in and day out they are intolerant hate filled lunatics who have exhausted this nation with their non-stop paranoid self-indulgent hate-filled grievance theater.

Agreed. I hope is family is able to get through this, I know what it's like to lose someone to cancer. My only worry is that the political bile from the leftists at KOS and Huffington is going to reach them somehow.

My hope is that people here don't link to those ugly sites and their
bile about Tony Snow.

607 DeathtotheSwiss  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 6:51:27am

I knew I shouldn't have...but I did anyway. I went to KOS to see what they had to say. Some positive diary entries, a few comments about "let's leave politics out of this" which gave me hope and then a few insane, "I don't care what kind of man he was, he worked for the evil BUSH!" comments and I couldn't stomach any more.

You know you're in deep sh*t when you're a dem and the NYT disses you in an editorial.

Mr. Rangel’s Very Good Deal

The stark unfairness here should be obvious. Yet, Mr. Rangel, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, argues that at least three of his apartments are legal under his reading of the rent-stabilization laws. He will “look into” the use of one apartment as an office, a violation of housing rules that would get most tenants thrown out almost immediately.

More inexplicably, Mr. Rangel argues that his half-price rent on the three other apartments of about $3,200 a month is his due. It is, as he puts it, “the protection afforded by the New York rent-control law to residents like myself from the escalation in market price that is pressuring so many of us to leave a community we can no longer afford.”

Chris Wallace may be a good guy but FNS hasn't been the same since Tony hosted it with his upbeat wit and honesty. He used to grace the McLaughlin group back when it was still watchable and would always make that moronic harpy Eleanor Clift apoplectic. I doubt that anybody served Bush better than he did. BLOGGERS: Support Freedom of Speech!
Please Support Harry’s Place Blogburst!

Harry’s Place, a UK blog dedicated to promoting the ideals of freedom and democracy, is being sued by Mohammed Sawalha, the President of the British Muslim Initiative, which has been linked to Hamas and the Islamic Brotherhood, both terrorist organizations. The blog reports that Mr. Sawalha, according to the BBC…

“master minded much of Hamas’ political and military strategy” and in London “is alleged to have directed funds, both for Hamas’ armed wing, and for spreading its missionary dawah”.

In their revelation of the impending lawsuit against them leveled by Mohammed Sawalha, they write:

Mr Sawalha claims that we have “chosen a malevolent interpretation of a meaningless word”. In fact, we did no more than translate a phrase which appeared in an Al Jazeera report of Mr Sawalha’s speech. When Al Jazeera changed that phrase from “Evil Jew” to “Jewish Lobby”, we reported that fact, along with the statement that it had been a typographical error.

Mr Sawalha has been the prime mover in a number of Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood associated projects. He is President of the British Muslim Initiative. He is the past President of the Muslim Association of Britain. He was the founder of IslamExpo, and is registered as the holder of the IslamExpo domain name. He is also a trustee of the Finsbury Park Mosque….

…Mr Sawalha says that the attribution of the phrase “Evil Jew” to him implies that he is “anti-semitic and hateful”. Notably, he does not take issue with our reporting of the revelation, made in a Panorama documentary in 2006, that he is a senior activist in the clerical fascist terrorist organisation, Hamas.

It looks like Harry’s Place is going up against some pretty top-notch lawyers on this one, and they’ve got guts, but as the post goes on to say:

If Mr Sawalha persists in attempting to silence us with this desperate legal suit, we will need your help.

We won’t be able to stand up to them alone.

This is why we’ve started this blogburst, to get the word out that we won’t let members of Hamas or any radical terrorist group censor us or any of our fellow bloggers.

If you’d like to add your site to the blogroll, simply email us at admin@neoconstant.com, and include your site’s URL. Then copy and paste this entry into one of your posts. Future posts will be emailed to you.

Thanks, and don’t forget to head over to Harry’s Place to show your support of their freedom of speech!

657 Stringart  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 7:27:44am

Mr. Levant Goes to Washington

Ezra was invited to speak to a bi-partisan committee of the U.S. Congress. His presentation is now up at his site.

1. Americans should care because Americans have always cared about liberty around the world, especially political and religious liberty. It is one of America’s greatest characteristics: a love for the well-being of other countries. Being a Good Samaritan is in your nature, and the world is freer because of it.

2. America should care because what happens in Europe and Canada soon comes – or tries to come – to the U.S. When it comes to censorship, we’re a laboratory for bad ideas. And the coalition between foreign trouble-makers and domestic busy-bodies is an idea that is spreading here, too.

3. Despite your First Amendment, human rights commissions are popping up all over the U.S.

The city of Philadelphia’ s “human relations” commission has a staff of 33, and a multi-million dollar budget. Last year, they prosecuted Geno’s Steak House because they put up a sign asking customers to order their Philly Cheese Steaks in English. We might agree with Geno’s sign or disagree. But to have a government agency prosecute them is a threat to the First Amendment. And, if it’s a steak house today, it could be a news magazine tomorrow. And if it’s do-gooders today, I can assure you it won’t be for long.

re: #657 Stringart
From your link:
"The city of Philadelphia’ s “human relations” commission has a staff of 33, and a multi-million dollar budget. And if it’s do-gooders today, I can assure you it won’t be for long."
Because of that I'm reporting your comment to Charles in the hope he'll make a thread out of it.

The snobbish left-wing media doesn't get the joke:

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter."

So China passed us in pollution/carbon output and Europe increased it's carbon output - all while the US lowered it all - but as usual the screw the evidence agenda driven media cannot point that out. No no - the US and Bush have FAILED. That's all that comes out of the collective.

Bush - we get the joke.
The trogs and proggies in the media don't. Idiots.

Cancer's Unexpected Blessings

When you enter the Valley of the Shadow of Death, things change.
Tony Snow 7/20/2007

Blessings arrive in unexpected packages—in my case, cancer.

Those of us with potentially fatal diseases—and there are millions in America today—find ourselves in the odd position of coping with our mortality while trying to fathom God's will. Although it would be the height of presumption to declare with confidence What It All Means, Scripture provides powerful hints and consolations.

The first is that we shouldn't spend too much time trying to answer the why questions: Why me? Why must people suffer? Why can't someone else get sick? We can't answer such things, and the questions themselves often are designed more to express our anguish than to solicit an answer.

I don't know why I have cancer, and I don't much care. It is what it is—a plain and indisputable fact. Yet even while staring into a mirror darkly, great and stunning truths begin to take shape. Our maladies define a central feature of our existence: We are fallen. We are imperfect. Our bodies give out.

But despite this—because of it—God offers the possibility of salvation and grace. We don't know how the narrative of our lives will end, but we get to choose how to use the interval between now and the moment we meet our Creator face-to-face.

Second, we need to get past the anxiety. The mere thought of dying can send adrenaline flooding through your system. A dizzy, unfocused panic seizes you. Your heart thumps; your head swims. You think of nothingness and swoon. You fear partings; you worry about the impact on family and friends. You fidget and get nowhere.

To regain footing, remember that we were born not into death, but into life—and that the journey continues after we have finished our days on this earth. We accept this on faith, but that faith is nourished by a conviction that stirs even within many nonbelieving hearts—an intuition that the gift of life, once given, cannot be taken away. Those who have been stricken enjoy the special privilege of being able to fight with their might, main, and faith to live—fully, richly, exuberantly—no matter how their days may be numbered.

Third, we can open our eyes and hearts. God relishes surprise. We want lives of simple, predictable ease—smooth, even trails as far as the eye can see—but God likes to go off-road. He provokes us with twists and turns. He places us in predicaments that seem to defy our endurance and comprehension—and yet don't. By his love and grace, we persevere. The challenges that make our hearts leap and stomachs churn invariably strengthen our faith and grant measures of wisdom and joy we would not experience otherwise.

Instapundit has found this piece which it properly describes as "a worrisome turn". It seems SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Interlligence) has not turnd up anything so now some people want to "change the observable brightness of Earth civilization by many orders of magnitude, in order to attract attention to our planet from anyone who might be out there. "

Good morning, lizards.
I have such a heavy heart this morning.

Does anyone here agree with me that a person who claims to be a conservative but is obessed about population control, openly states that he hates all Mexicans and thinks that all Mexicans should be deported - even those who are US citizens - is a racist bigot? And that someone who says that he embraces conservatism but has absolutely no problem with the "Chinese solution" to control overpopulation, is a few bricks short of a load?

I'm on a prominant conservative blog were this kind of thing is being floated constantly... the blog has a strong focus on anti-immigration, and the blog owner isn't willing to delete the derogatory comments about Mexicans (but will however, delete comments that include the word "r*ghead).

WTF? Does anyone in the conservative wing of the Republican party understand the difference between right and wrong these days?

I'm the only one there who is willing to say that racism should have no place in conservative discourse. Nothing but silence, from everyone else.

Thank heaven for Little Green Footballs, an island of sanity in a world gone mad... Charles would never allow this kind of garbage to be posted here at LGF.

re: #163 Throbert McGee

UNLESS YOUR STARTING A STRIP CLUB WHY WOULD YOU WANT A HOME MADE DISCO BALL:?

True. But, the 80's produced a few highly talented and imaginative rock groups(not to mention some tremendously catchy pop). Plus some bands really came into their own in the 80's who started out in the 70s like The Cars, AC/DC, Motorhead, Dire Straits, Tom Petty, The Pretenders and ZZ TOP (technically a 60's band...1969 baby).

Without the 80s there'd be no Guns and Roses, Metallica, The Violent Femmes, and don't forget those were the days when Michael Jackson wasn't best know for having an amusement park at his home to lure young children to his bedroom.

That's not 'conservative'. William Buckley ran those asswipes out years ago. Mandy is right. Walk away, don't look back.

Good morning lizards. I have a story for you. There's a Korean family that runs a Chinese restaurant - best hot & sour soup ever. The gentleman that delivered our dinner yesterday is Korean - goes by the name of 'Andy' - about 50 years old. Get this = 50 years old working as a delivery guy - he pointed out the flag in our yard and went absolutely ripshit.

YES! AMERICA! YES YES YES I COME HERE TO BE AMERICAN! AND YOU PRETTY LADY IT IS OK WITH YOU I KNOW THIS! YES! AMERICAN!

He went on like that for a bit. Very cool.

isn't that great. people who have suffered in their own homelands come here and they see the incredible gift of freedom so clearly. all the opportunities.
i know so many foreigners, koreans (as you have mentioned) , ukrainians, chinese. they do not understand the anti-american moonbats.
i know several chinese people in the fashion business. they are conservative republicans. they have no idea how 'inappropriate' that is in their field of employment. lol

Recommendations:
If you don't have SpyBot S&D, get it. You won't regret it. Update it, then run the Immunize tool, and the routine scan for malware. It may help to re-run the scan after powering down and restarting in SafeMode, assuming you are familiar with SafeMode. If not, setting Spybot to run once at windows startup may be almost as good. (In the Spybot S&D Settings tool, under Automation, System Start, there's an option to Run program once at next system startup. Select that option, then shutdown your computer, count to ten, and restart.)

If your browser is IE whatever, you will want to run the ActiveX and BHOs tools, too. (Leave the TeaTimer tool turned off, unless you feel geeky.)

If you are using XP and have no other firewall, make sure the Windows firewall is enabled.

Some AV and malware tools cannot be run in SafeMode. Others can, such as SpyBot S&D (most fns), Stinger, HiJackThis, and a few others.

Stinger is free and easy to use, altho not a very comprehensive AV tool. Stinger download site.

Hope this helps. And you might want to try FireFox.

re: #658 jaydee

Abolitionist,
I have just done a regen, and have been thrown off the board, and this appears in the url
[Link: software-traffic.com...]

what the heck is going on

It sounds like your machine has some sort of malware and your browser is no longer entirely under your control. I don't know if software-traffic.com is a bad site or not. They seem to be into e-mail and various web revenue generation operations.

Maybe first thing to try is get Stinger and run it. (If you know about SafeMode, run it again in SafeMode. If not, skip that.)

Then run SpyBot S&D.

There is also a HOSTS tool in there. A virginal HOSTS file has some comment lines (with a ; at the left) and one real entry:
127.0.0.1 localhost

If your HOSTS file appears to have a few other lines, it is *possible* that they were added by malware. You can use the HOSTS tool in SpyBot S&D to add a list of bad.sites.on.the.net.that.you.don't.want.to.visit and most browsers will respect this "blacklisting." This alone will give you substantial protection from a huge percentage of malware that's on the web, and may partly neuter some that may have infected your machine.

Good luck.

President Bush on Tony Snow:

About Contact Archives RSS Columns Photos

About Contact Archives RSS Columns Photos Michelle Malkin Lead StoryTony Snow, R.I.P.
By Michelle Malkin • July 12, 2008 08:30 AM

Heartbreakingly sad news this morning. Tony Snow has died. He was 53. He was a true mensch, multi-talented–and one of the kindest people I had the honor to meet in the news business.

Tears:

Tony Snow, the former White House press secretary and conservative pundit who bedeviled the press corps and charmed millions as a FOX News television and radio host, has died after a long bout with cancer. He was 53.

A syndicated columnist, editor, TV anchor, radio show host and musician, Snow worked in nearly every medium in a career that spanned more than 30 years.

“The White House has lost a great friend and a great colleague,” said President Bush’s press secretary and Snow’s former deputy, Dana Perino. “We all loved watching him at the podium, but most of all we learned how to love our families and treat each other.”

Snow joined FOX in 1996 as the original anchor of “FOX News Sunday” and hosted “Weekend Live” and a radio program, “The Tony Snow Show,” before departing in 2006. A sometime fill-in host for Rush Limbaugh, Snow said he loved the intimacy of his radio audience.

“It’s a tremendous loss for us who knew him, but it’s also a loss for the country,” Roger Ailes, chairman of FOX News, said Saturday morning about Snow, calling him a “renaissance man.”
Indeed, he was. Here’s Tony jamming with his band at the National Press Club:

And here’s the statement from the White House:

“Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of our dear friend, Tony Snow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jill, and their children, Kendall, Robbie, and Kristi. The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character.

"Tony was one of our Nation’s finest writers and commentators. He earned a loyal following with incisive radio and television broadcasts. He was a gifted speechwriter who served in my father’s Administration. And I was thrilled when he agreed to return to the White House to serve as my Press Secretary. It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work. His colleagues will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor.

All of us here at the White House will miss Tony, as will the millions of Americans he inspired with his brave struggle against cancer. One of the things that sustained Tony Snow was his faith – and Laura and I join people across our country in praying that this good man has now found comfort in the arms of his Creator.”

Very Sad about Tony Snow - he was a very good man. It is ironic if not foreboding that Tim Russert and Tony Snow, two class acts have departed so close in time. They came from opposite ideologies but both were gentleman. The frightening notion is that we are left with the Olbermanns and Matthews of th world. With an incoming [very] liberal administration, and a Press that is more like the Dems echo chamber, the advent of propaganda parading as truth appears inevitable subject to sites like this one and talk radio unless of course the fairness doctrine is invoked

Followup. The particular URL you provided as a link (software-traffic.com/blah-blah) does a transfer to another site, scanner.vav-scan.com which in turn appears to be a "fake malware scan/tools" site, which will try to install bad stuff, apparently just by visiting. NoScript add-on for Firefox stopped several scripts cold. (I'm also running !Avast antivirus and a firewall.)

There are some disparaging comments about it at the McAffee Site Advisor. One says:

This website emulates a legitimate virus scanner, however it's FAKE! It will immediately drop a trojan program on your computer.

So lizards, don't click the link in #658 (unless your machine is very well-protected).

A better Goethe quote:

"Whenever I hear people talking about 'liberal' ideas I am always amazed that people should love to fool themselves with such empty sounds. An idea should never be liberal, it must be vigorous, positive, and without loose ends so that it may fulfill its divine mission and be productive. The proper place for liberality is in the emotions."

Or, one that fits in the realm of Obama:

"When ideas fail, words come in very handy."
