RIP, Tony Snow

Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 8:59:36 am PDT

It’s a sad morning; Tony Snow has passed away at the age of 53. Rest in peace, Tony.

I almost hate to point it out, but the Daily Kos subhumans are celebrating, of course: Daily Kos: Tony Snow MORE IMPORTANT than Dead Soldiers.

UPDATE at 7/12/08 9:39:30 am:

At the center of left-wing hatred known as the Huffington Post, they’ve pre-emptively closed their comments for the article on Tony Snow’s passing because they know full well what will happen: Tony Snow, Former Bush Press Secretary, Dies - Media on The Huffington Post.

UPDATE at 7/12/08 9:41:03 am:

The Associated Press hits rock bottom: Classless AP Takes Cheap Shots at Just-Passed Snow.

I will remember Tony Snow at the podium grappling with Helen Thomas. A smile on his face, a gleam in his eye and a silky smooth voice rising beautifully above her cackles

RIP Tony

Cancer's Unexpected Blessings
When you enter the Valley of the Shadow of Death, things change.
Tony Snow

Blessings arrive in unexpected packages—in my case, cancer.

Those of us with potentially fatal diseases—and there are millions in America today—find ourselves in the odd position of coping with our mortality while trying to fathom God's will. Although it would be the height of presumption to declare with confidence What It All Means, Scripture provides powerful hints and consolations.

The first is that we shouldn't spend too much time trying to answer the why questions: Why me? Why must people suffer? Why can't someone else get sick? We can't answer such things, and the questions themselves often are designed more to express our anguish than to solicit an answer.

I don't know why I have cancer, and I don't much care. It is what it is—a plain and indisputable fact. Yet even while staring into a mirror darkly, great and stunning truths begin to take shape. Our maladies define a central feature of our existence: We are fallen. We are imperfect. Our bodies give out.

But despite this—because of it—God offers the possibility of salvation and grace. We don't know how the narrative of our lives will end, but we get to choose how to use the interval between now and the moment we meet our Creator face-to-face

read it all when you can....

37 Steffan  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 9:13:50am

I agree -- there's more than one reason why the Kos Kidz are basement-dwellers.

Their souls are shriveled, warped, and butt-ugly -- a combination of Gollum and Azathoth, or anything else out of Lovecraft. I've seen axe murders with better dispositions.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Snow family and their friends.

He was by far the superior anchor at Fox New Sunday. He never got flustered. He never let anyone get away with a factual error. And, he was the best Press Secretary W had, but only slightly above Ari

And he played a mean flute.

I will miss him.

Typical of the left to only use dead soldiers to advance a political point. Lets see if they hold the same stance when one of their own liberal icons dies.

Nevertheless Tony Snow will certainly be missed. It's a tragedy he had to die so young.

This was tough news to wake up to. I knew he had to be very sick since he had to cancel some speeches in the past few months. He will be missed.
I don't have the stomach or the blood pressure to read what the Kos Kretins have posted, but I can just imagine. Tony had more class than all of them put together.

I was very sad this morning to hear that Tony Snow had passed away. I used to love listening to his radio show because he was always so gracious and optimistic. Trying to learn guitar nowadays while looking for work. It's keeping me busy, but it's really hard (working on the five pentatonic positions). Not looking for a career in music, but looking to be good enough to jam outside of work. Seeing Tony play made me realize I can do that, rather than be a workaholic (I have a nasty tendency to do that).

You know, when I heard Ted Kennedy had cancer and was going through chemo, I was hoping he would get well and make a speedy recovery. I despised his politics, but he is a fellow human being. I had the exact same reaction as you. I live in Mass and think Kennedy's politics are incredibly detrimental to the state and the country as a whole but that doesn't mean he deserves to die. I still hope Sen. Kennedy makes a full recovery.

I can't even comprehend the type of person you would have to be to take pleasure in someone's demise. I truly find it hard to believe that human beings can spew such hatred. How do they live with themselves?

Some people have that certain je ne sais quoi about them, and from my remote outpost, watching from afar, it was clear this was Tony. How he could maintain his poise, and that warm smile, even while explaining things to people he knew loathed him, such as the vile Helen Thomas, is a quality we all should strive for.

I almost hate to point it out, but the Daily Kos subhumans are celebrating, of course:

With all due respect, I take issue with the use of the term "subhuman". Pond scum, oxygen-wasting, delusional, perhaps; alas, all too human. The poster cited is well aware of his place in an on-going Civil War:

I'm sorry but it just sickens me to read diary after diary of silly, bleeding-heart little condolensces to Snow and his family.

I swear some of you weak-kneed progessive brethren of mine have no clue about the vicious nature of the ideological battle we are in. When a bad guy dies, we should rejoice, not sing his praises of wish him anything by scorn.

There is a fundamental reason why the progress/liberal movement is so often impotent in delivering effective blows to the right-wing machine-- it has to do with "toughness".

* liquidstoke's diary :: ::
*

Tony Snow was a co-conspirator in probably the largest know fraud ever perpetuated and executed on the American public by it's own elected executive branch.

He was Fox news anchor in the likes of Hannity, Cavueto, & Wallace. This guy was a practiced liar and propagandist before he ever stepped foot into the White House Press briefing room.

RIP, Tony. There are still many of us on the battlements, to continue the defense of freedom.

Public acts of treason abound. Sedition comes easier to some than breathing. The seeds planted in the 1920s and earlier, that sprouted in the '50s, '60s, and '70s, now blossom in the likes of Schumer, Fonda, Kennedy, Clinton, CAIR, Maher, Carter, Murtha, Kerry, Gore; the list goes on. Politicians, actors, reporters, commentators, musicians, Fifth Columnists.......those who believe their 15 minutes of fame somehow endows them with a better understanding of how your life should be run. While I can't fathom most of their motivations, I do know that they are bent on the destruction of America as we have known it; the America of free speech, free worship, freedom to to aspire and to achieve. They are willing to sacrifice the freedom of our children and grandchildren for their grievously flawed view of the world. They villify the Commander-in-Chief, do their utmost to undermine the morale of the men and women who are their sole defense against a hostile world, work to destroy the economic and political systems that allows them the luxury of protest, actively provide aid and comfort to our enemies. They espouse a world without borders, therefore with no nations. No United States of America.

As angry as those idiots make me (which is easy for them to do), the best way to honor Mr. Snow's memory from this plateau is to not hit the Kos site and pray for those misguided morons.

Kos Kids were jealous of Mr. Snow - he engaged in honest debate with warmth, character and integrity - never hurling insults or lowering himself below the debate itself. Something the Kos Kids and their beloved leader will never understand. Let them choke on their vile insults; it doesn't get them anywhere and they can't take anything away from Snow or his legacy.

It is a sad day indeed when the planet loses a human being with the all the good qualities of Tony Snow.

Please use his passing as a reminder to yourselves and loved ones (if you are over the age of 40 or have a family history) to get a colon screening so that if you are unfortunate enough to develop colon cancer, it can be caught and treated as early as possible. With early detection, colon cancer is a very treatable form of cancer.

BIR- 99.9% of us here at LGF didn't insult or make vile remarks about Ted Kennedy, but prayed for him, and those who did get vile got smacked down by Charles, and deservedly so.

97 ironbill  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 9:51:56am

Sad news indeed.

I watched and listened to him many times on t.v. and radio. He never attacked the character of his opponents; just pointed out where they were wrong.

The insects at daily scuz should consider that Tony Snow served in Africa while a member of the Peace Corps, personally helping to alleviate the misery in the 3rd world.

Wonder how many of them could say that they did the same.

A good man has passed on and the filth of the blogosphere celebrate. The world is no doubt a little lesser today.

Thats what seperates us from the left Bob. Despite our differences in ideaology to most of us there is nothing joyful in the demise of a fellow human being and the pain inflicted on their loved ones.

The last time I checked cancer didn't discriminate on the basis of party affiliation. Someone may want to inform the Kossacks and the DUmmies.

The Associated Press hits rock bottom: Classless AP Takes Cheap Shots at Just-Passed Snow.

Oh look! Jennifer Loven again, ever classless.

101 strandedsf  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 9:57:03am

I called 8 members of the Associated Press board this morning and left messages saying they need to stop using obituaries to slam the deceased, especially a deceased loved by millions of people. The fact that all of them are also newspaper publishers at papers like the Washpo, NYT and Chicago Tribune was an added bonus. I pointed out to them that it's stuff like this that makes their circulations, stock prices and editorial staff get decimated. I notice the Washpo obituary, while detailed about his job performance, manages to avoid cheap shots at Tony and highlights his joyful personality and the fact that he was loved by millions.

The AP makes me sick. Why is Jennifer Loven still employed? I notice she "contributed" to the AP obituary -- contributed potshots, that is.

To be fair, many over there are also showing some real compassion.

105 jaunte  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 10:03:07am

Apparently Jennifer Loven and the AP just can't work out why a man in his fifties with cancer might want to raise more money for his wife and three children. More likely she chose to ignore that reason so she could imply that Snow was simply too greedy.

Rest in peace, Mr. Snow. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Someone do please point the moonbats at this paragraph by John Donne:

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

What do you intend to do? The American people are already telling the media quite clearly that they aren't necessary, as evinced by falling viewership for network news, declining subscriptions to drive-by newspapers, and the continued cable dominance of Fox News (BWAHAHAHAHA!). Tony Snow's passing has left a void that will never be entirely filled.
I've expressed my sympathy and condolences to his family and wished him Godspeed on the DT, with the wish that folks wouldn't go to, much less quote from comments at Huffpoo and Kos, although I acknowledged that Charles might do just that, to point out again what truly low-life sub-humans they are.
The AP came as a total shock to me; as much as I disrepect them as journalists it never occured to me that they would, in their own snarky way, manage to malign a man who served this country - a country he loved with all of his heart - I honestly do find shocking and wish there was someway we could make our voices heard by the Powers That Be over there. Except, of course, the Powers That Be at the AP probably approved this hateful bit of "journalism" in the first place.

re: #142 kevinmumaw

I remembered it when I first read it (an op-ed column, I think) because of an illustration my existentialism prof had used in college. He characterized the difference in perception of good and evil by giving a Middle Ages example. Picture a nobleman on a horse and a peasant on the street. The nobleman looks down at the grubby peasant and says "bad". The peasant looks up at the well-dressed nobleman and says "evil".

There may be (or have been, back in the Sixties) some correlation. I don't know.

OK Everyone -

This is the Second BIG LOSS of Real Journalists this year. Tim Russert was about my age and seemed to be a fellow that "Burned the Candle at Both Ends" - to that degree, his death was at least "understandable." Tony Snow was about the age of my younger sister and as best as he could with his condition appeared to be doing everything possible to stay alive.
Both deaths have reminded me of my own mortality/impermanence. A good lesson to absorb. As to Tony & Family - My Kaddish. That is all.

My condolences to Tony Snow's friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. I am sure that Tony Snow is in heaven and at peace. He lived a rich full life and this country and the world is the better for his short sojourn here.
It is amazing that sites like the DK and DUMB (they don't deserve full attribution) are filled with such alleged non judgmental hate mongers.
It is more than strange that the kind of hate they have towards republicans they don't have in the slightest towards the enemies of this country, say, terrorists, AQ, Hamass, FARC, Hizbollah. When a republican dies, the venom comes out there, but when a terrorist dies it's almost as if many there feel as though they've lost a close near and dear friend. For so many posters there to have such a moral blindspot is frightening to say the least and doesn't auger well for any potential Obamanation Administration (G.F.) I am encouraged by those here who pray for the souls of those they don't agree with, not wishing ill on them. However, there are a class of persons that although I try to be a Christian, I cannot pray well for, and if they have life threatening illnesses, I would not pray for their health. These are not the usual political figures, but are ruthless murderers, dictators, terrorists and their willing followers.
I do pray that they be led from their vile ways, to peace and loving kindness, but should they not, and continue in their evil, I pray that the Lord speedily numbers their days so that they may join Him sooner than they would like. If that makes me evil or non Christian, well, I take that risk, because there are some acts and actors (both genders and transgenders (don't want to be pc villified as well) ) so perverse, that I could not in good conscience pray for their success and long life. If others here are more enlightened, God Bless them.

"when a terrorist dies it's almost as if many there feel as though they've lost a close near and dear friend..." that's because, other than near and dear, they HAVE lost a friend.
The ultra Left in this country - that is, the "activist" wing of the Dem Party has ALWAYS felt - when a Republican was president - that anything BAD that happens to or in America is GOOD for them; it gives them, they feel, a chance to get back into power.
That they haven't even the vaugest thoughts of what to do with that power, should they ever achieve it, hasn't even crossed their mean, little, brains.

This I remember about him. I also enjoyed him on the many shows I've seen him on, including as a fill in guest for Rush Limbaugh. Seems like all the good guys are dying.

RIP

Tony Snow was a decent and honorable man, I'll miss him.

As for the left wing blogs, I'm going to ignore them for the rest of the week; they have no decency, nor honor and are truly vile. These sick people cannot be allowed to govern this country.

176 Carbine Footprint  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 11:52:56am

177 The Mongoose  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 11:53:31am

Huffington Post is now using something new (for them)...moderating the comments to allow only decent statements.

Bet the dozens of moonbats trying to post their hate messages against a good man who left us too soon are going extra nuts today.

178 conservativeChick  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 11:57:29am

It's funny how the sub-human moonbats are saying that Tony Snows passing is more important then then are soldiers but when given the opportunity they dance on your soldiers grave. What a bunch of unthinking idiots.

Thank God that Tony lived and that he is now released from his earthly bonds.
His example has inspired me to to be a better person.

A truly great man, his passing leaves us diminished yet also enriched that he lived.

Rock n Roll Heaven gets a valuable addition, and now Tony and Tim can start up HNN - the Heavenly News Network.

Love you Tony, my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

181 tgibson1962  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 12:02:53pm

A good man first, a good newsman/press secretary second.

RE the Kos, it's instructive to see how they react to the deaths of conservatives versus the responses on conservatives to the death or illness of liberals. I was pleased and encouraged by the responses posted on conservative blogs to Ted Kennedy's brain cancer and the death of Tim Russert. There is a difference between playing hard and just being mean.

182 Gmac  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 12:07:05pm

Rest in peace Mr Snow, you were a giant in a land of midgets when it came to dealing directly with the deranged liberals of the press corp, especially that battleax Thomas.

Condolences to his wife, children and many friends.

We used to play music around various campfires, he on flute and myself on upright bass.

I shall miss him dearly. I am a much better man for having known him.

RIP, Tony. We shall all gather together on the other side of the river one fine day, once more, in a world without strife or division.

190 Throbert McGee  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 1:04:42pm

The most disgraceful part of the AP obit on Tony Snow was the two-word phrase:

Critics suggested...

That's a cowardly way of saying "I think..."

(The AP scribblers would say, in their defense, that writing with the first-person singular pronoun "I" would be, in many contexts, a violation of journalistic style rules. Which is perfectly true, but -- how convenient for journalists who happen to be chickenshits.)

re: #143 pre-Boomer Marine brat

I remembered it when I first read it (an op-ed column, I think) because of an illustration my existentialism prof had used in college. He characterized the difference in perception of good and evil by giving a Middle Ages example. Picture a nobleman on a horse and a peasant on the street. The nobleman looks down at the grubby peasant and says "bad". The peasant looks up at the well-dressed nobleman and says "evil".

Interestingly ambiguous example!

"Ambiguous" because you could take it in different ways depending on your professor's (and the listener's) own political and class biases.

For example, one person might criticize the nobleman for being wishy-washy (he balks at using a word as emphatic as "evil"), while praising the peasant's willingness to call a spade a spade.

But another person might say that the nobleman's judgment of the grubby (and perhaps suspicious-looking) peasant is somewhat restrained by a sense of noblesse oblige towards someone much less fortunate in life -- while the peasant may be judging the wealthier man much too harshly, out of spiteful envy.

During daily briefings, he challenged reporters, scolded them and questioned their motives as if he were starring in a TV show broadcast live from the West Wing.

Well it was his home field. He did challenge reporters and he did scold them and he did question their motives. I find this to be all true and I loved to listen to him when he did it. As far as it was his TV show maybe that can be construed into a compliment. He was in charge when he stood at the podium. I guess I like the way I read the AP quote. It shows a man in charge.

I have a friend whose father is fighting this type of cancer. This is a hard blow to her as well.

As for Kos and Huffpo, let them wallow. They do it only because they know he is and was a better man than they can possibly comprehend.

Rest in your well-deserved peace, Mr. Snow

There have been three people during my life that I didn't know personally and had never met but whose deaths affected me deeply Jimmy Stewart, Ronald Reagan, and Tony Snow. All three of these men had something in common and it was their profound goodness. It was that their presence in the world just made you feel that there was hope and a future worth looking forward to. It was their unabashed love of our country it was many countless things. God bless you Tony you will be a man who can't be replaced and who would pooh pooh being compared to someone like Ronald Reagan. Contrast the reaction by DKOS, HuffPost, and others to his untimely death, to the reaction of this very site and many other "right wing" sites when Ted Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer.

The compassion (and ability to not HATE someone because you disagree) from the right, and the distinct lack thereof from the left is very telling, IMHO.

Tony Snow generously shared his faith with us in a written essay. In light of that, it is a comfort to note that those who revile his memory and slander his life work today in public screeds, gloating, have surely had their reward.

Mr. Snow understood what cause, and for Whose Kingdom and Banner he fought. His pitiable, vile detractors have had their simian moment of glory, transient and sordid.

How did I know I'd find some rabid brain vomit hate quoted here. Kos is a given. The AP was certainly a surprise. Well, these ARE the enemy. They help the Al Queerda and radical Islam in numerous valuable (to the enemy) ways. Truly disgusting.

Let's not forget who got these zombies mounted on their mission of hate and insanity. The Democrat 'Leaders', who would draw and quarter their own Mothers in public square for a chance to control that big cash register in DC.

Tony Snow is one of the greatest standout class acts of our time. Deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I was saddened by the passing of Tony. A man of class, dignity and intelligence along with humor and a nice person. After reading the AP story, I was stunned at the classless, mean spirited diatribe. Perhaps these reporters are representative of those "mean" Americans Michelle Obama speaks of. What a clear distinction between the comments when Tim Russert passed (who leaned to the left) and now Tony Snow (who leaned to the right). I note the blogs, of the right leaning, were respectful and mindful of both men and sent blessings to their families. I have lost so much respect for 1/2 of the population and am more than convinced there is serious character disorder going on.

Edna St. Vincent Millay (from my rather foggy memory).

The only part that your memory fogged (sp?) up a little is the last line, which in the original was: "it gives a lovely light." But whatever the wording, it's a suitable epitaph for any gifted person who dies at an unexpectedly young age.

(Although it does imply a link between the nature of a person's greatness and his premature demise -- so it's most perfectly suited to the case of, e.g., an artist who produces his best work under the influence of alcohol, but then dies from alcohol-related disease. I'm not sure if Snow's work contributed to the progression of his cancer in any way.)

I am always sad when I hear of any person passing away, especially from something like cancer which my father has survived and my mother-in-law is fighting. I am also very saddened to hear that anyone should die at the tender age of 53 years old.

May Tony Snow's family take comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and that he left a very classy and distinguished legacy. He also gave hope in a very public way to people fighting cancer all over the world.

Tony Snow caught our attention - one amongst many newscasters on TV ... but he was different. He had a curious smile, as if he was letting on to the viewers that he knew the material he was given to work with was poppycock, so we came back again and again to watch him, wondering what he was up to. When he was given more freedom and control over his own work, we were delighted to discover a sharp mind and refreshingly informed person. He was always extremely polite and restrained - qualities that are hard to find these days, especially in the media which celebrates excess. Wish we had more like him.
May he rest in peace and may his family be consoled and supported in their loss.

246 Amy Proctor  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 9:23:57pm

Commenters on that Daily KOS thread beat him up over his disgusting comments. One Daily KOSer who knew Tony Snow had good things to say about him.

What I don't get is this whole "Tony Snow is guilty of spreading Bush administration lies". What the hell are they talking about? What lies? That Saddam was a threat? That giving taxpayers more of their own money helps the economy? That toughing it with N. Korea will lead to their disarmament (and it has)?

They're a bunch of nuts and anything negative they have to say about Tony Snow is based on mental illness.

251 ceemack  Sat, Jul 12, 2008 10:58:50pm

I read the comments--all of them--on the Daily Kos diary. Before I go take a long, hot shower (gonna need a brand-new bar of soap for this one), I wonder if the disparate tone of the comments on that diary don't reflect a growing divide between the nice liberals and the rabid dogs of the far left.

This would mirror the divide we're starting to see in the Muslim world between the radical fundamentalists and the ones who just want to worship Allah and live a decent life.

Afghanistan (to a small extent) and Iraq (to a large extent) have been the "tipping points" that have brought about the growing gulf between the hardcore Islamists and the "Muslim street". Ongoing examples of foaming-at-the-mouth hatred like this Kos diary may be the thing that creates a gulf between the decent liberals and the neo-fascists of the modern American left.

I've got a few liberal friends, and they're constantly trying to square their innate belief that conservatives are inherently evil with the knowledge that I'm a conservative, and don't fit that bill. Not entirely, anyway. People like them aren't going to be attracted to those who dance on the graves of people whose only crime was to disagree with the Left.

So as revolted as I am by the ignorant hatred expressed so nakedly in this diary, I'm tempted to say "Hey, pal, keep 'em coming."

Maybe there'll be an Anbar Awakening among the decent people on the left, and goose-stepping leftist hatemongers like Moulitsas and this "LiquidStoke" character will be more and more marginalized--just like Al Qaida in Iraq.

And then, by Tennyson's "soft degrees," maybe we can help them see a few glimpses of the truth.

Why would LGF be so considerate of Tony Snows passing? He was one of "those people" that believed in Intelligent Design. I talked with Tony several times back when he had his radio talk show. He was a VERY religious person.

GOD rest your soul Tony, you were a very nice man!
We will miss you.

1. proof?

There is not a religious bone in my body and I am against ID. That being said, I find your question misguided and offensive.

In #1 you ask for proof.
In #2 You automatically disregard anything that could have been provided in #1.

Kind of like saying "don't confuse me with facts, my mind is made up"!

blushes and hangs head

I knew I should have checked against a bad memory . . .

But it's still a beautiful bit of verse, and describes Tony Snow's incandescent life. The world is a little bit darker without him.

I remember channel surfing one night and happened to land on the familiar face of Tony Snow on HBO. Yep, he was on Real Time with Bill Maher, and naturally they stacked the decks with the usual bleeding heart to Rabid Liberal friends of Bills.

And Tony stuffed the lot of them. He let them know he was a Christian Conservative, a Republican, and called the lot of them what they were Liberal Socialists.

Loved it. Normally, I can't stand Bill Mahr too much of a Darwinist religious nut for me, but that night Tony Snow stood up, stood out, and stuffed him and his America hating buddies.

Don't forget Jim McKay (though I think he was in his eighties), but that makes three towering journalistic figures this year.

Today Tony Snow died. When I saw it on TV I stood up and it hit me like a punch to the gut. A roar to my side caught my attention. Then the standing and clapping and hurrahs from a mob of people made me so mad I turned to them and got ready to blast them with both barrels. How dare they cheer his passing! Then to my surprise I noticed that none of these people could see the TV screen. No one knew about his death. They stood to clappe at four service men that were disembarking from a jumbo jet.

As the laddies passed us a wave started as more people stood up to clappe. I joined in to control my shaking as I asked myself a simple question. Would Tony allow emotions to overtake a misunderstood picture of a good situation? Or any situation?

I felt a little ashamed of myself for thinking the worse of these good people. These people whose only worries that day will be about getting home, meeting family and friends, and living with a freedom not possible in ¾ of the world.

Kos, Moss, loss, moonbats, loonbats, goonbats, they will never matter.....to me.

I can only wish that Tony Snow had hung around a little longer. I miss him.....We will miss him .....until another steps to the plate ......... The colour is blue.
